Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (also known as simply Cinderella) is a 1997 American musical fantasy television film produced by Walt Disney Television, directed by Robert Iscove, and written by Robert L. Freedman. Based on the French fairy tale by Charles Perrault, the film is the second remake and third version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical, which originally aired on television in 1957. Adapted from Oscar Hammerstein II's book, Freedman modernized the script to appeal to more contemporary audiences by updating its themes, particularly re-writing its main character into a stronger heroine. Co-produced by Whitney Houston, who also appears as Cinderella's Fairy Godmother, the film stars Brandy in the title role and features a racially diverse ensemble cast consisting of Jason Alexander, Whoopi Goldberg, Bernadette Peters, Veanne Cox, Natalie Desselle, Victor Garber, and Paolo Montalban.

I love how COLORFUL this film is, the sets, the costumes, the cast--even the freaking stair railings and kitchen are bursting with color and whimsy in this film. It's all so much. Too much, really, but it's a heck of a lot of fun! And don't get me started on how amazing Bernadette Peters is.

Another thing is, we actually see Cinderella and the prince actually do get to talk to one another and develop chemistry through it. When they first meet, he helps her pick up her bags, and it's not completely love at first sight. At the ball, he knows the women (other than Cinderella, of course) who came are there for his title. He's fully aware of it and tries reasoning with his mother to let him find a true love without being forced.
😁 The soundtrack is amazing! There are times when I'll play the entire thing and not grow tired of it.

My favorite song to this is "My own little corner", I identified with this song so much as a child because I would play pretend a lot. I quote it to this day. The other one I sing all the time is the "I fell in love with love" one. It was sad story was but a fun montage

Fun Fact: Jason Alexander actually was in the original cast of the Stephen Sondheim show Merrily We Roll Along on Broadway but sadly it didn't do that well and only ran for 16 performances. This was actually before Seinfeld so that's probably why he's in this movie given that he's had Broadway experience especially with one of the biggest names of Broadway composers. Now, Merrily We Roll Along is back on Broadway with Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe (yes, Harry Potter himself). I haven't seen it yet but given that it's extended it's run to July, I really want to see it so bad since I love Stephen Sondheim shows so much.

Doug, I'm surprised that you didn't mention how Brandy's portrayal of Cinderella was more active and less of a damsel-in-distress than Lily James' portrayal in the 2015 film, which is still very good. In this version, Cinderella said that the reason why she stayed with her step-family all these years was because she made a promise to her father before he died that they would always stay together as a family. After the Stepmother speaks to Cinderella cruelly after she comes home from the ball, Cinderella tells her father in Heaven that she just can't stay there anymore despite the promise she made to him. When the Stepmother tries to hide and lock Cinderella in the kitchen, Cinderella is still able to escape by going out the back door.

Talking about the “Cinderella being black” issue is complicated when talking about this adaptation. Most people are perfectly fine with this adaptation having such a diverse cast while taking issue with Halle Bailey playing Ariel or Rachel Zegler playing Snow White, but I think there is a warranted reason for such a different response. Back when this adaptation came out, the idea of “accurate representation in media” was not nearly as prominent of a talking point as it is now, and as a result, people weren’t as jaded about seeing such a racially diverse cast in this, even to the point of not making sense. You even said it yourself in the video, the producers for this adaptation likely chose people for these roles because they were the best fit for their characters, skin color be damned. Nowadays, with so many studios, especially Disney making such a big deal of making their casts racially diverse for the sake of “accurate representation”, even to the point of having non-white actors play actual historical figures who were actually white, people are starting to think that these actors are being cast based on their skin color first to fill a diversity quota, instead of basing them on their actual level of talent. That’s not to say that these non-white actors are not talented. You said yourself in your Little Mermaid review that Halle Bailey is a fantastic singer, and I completely agree. Most people just think that she was cast based on her skin color first and her talent second, whether that’s a fair assessment to make or not. I think the reason most people don’t have a problem with the racially diverse cast in this movie because there was a sense that the people involved weren’t trying to pull some political stunt. They just cast who they thought would be the best fit for each role.

The Brandy version was my introduction to Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, and it left quite an impression on me. I was a fan of Bernadette Peters from Into the Woods first before I saw her in this, and she certainly made the most out of playing the stepmother. I have been tempted to riff on this film in an MST3K way myself, though it is far more bearable and enjoyable than other Disney TV musicals I've had the misfortune to see. The Music Man with Matthew Broderick comes to mind, for instance.

Difference between this and modern day Remakes is that Cinderella here felt like it's own movie similar to how The Wiz was to The Wizard of Oz. Remakes today feels more like a lazy copy & paste of the same story.

And on top of that you don't feel disney orwellean pride to make it feel like "this shit is better than the original", this is just a fun over the top production like adam west batman or matilda the musical that was doing its own thing

Sigh i cant believe there are people in this comment section who cant tell the difference between woke and Broadway.
Let me break it down for the slow crowd.
Lets say you're watching Anastasia the musical on Broadway and the actress playing Anya is black. Probably not woke. She's there because she's the best singer available and people are paying a crapton of money to hear the songs sung perfectly.
Then, in contrast, let's say we get a remake of 1971's Nicholas and Alexandra and the executives cast a black Anastasia, a latina Alexandra, and an Asian Alexei Romanov and then try to gaslight the audience that tsar Nicholas always had nonwhite children and we're racist if we point out they look pretty damn white in their literal photographs and film reels.
    See the difference?

People need to understand how big a deal this was for many families back in the day. Brandy and Whitney Houston were both still at the top of their games. And for them to be in such huge starting roles was enormous. And Filipinos almost NEVER got roles such as that. So for a lot of black and brown families this film was like a dream come true. My cousins and me crowded around the tv to watch this film over and over we as kids it meant so much and still does

This was around the time that Disney was making Made-for-TV adaptations of several musicals for their Wonderful World of Disney segments on ABC. There's a version of Annie directed by Rob Marshall that I think is, to this day, the best filmed version of that musical (even if it is severely cut down and it feels like it), with Kathy Bates slaying it as Mrs. Hannigan (I still prefer Carol Burnett, but Bates does a great Hannigan), and some prime Broadway talent such as Victor Garber, Audra McDonald, Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth (as well as a pre-Modern Family Sarah Hyland as the youngest of the orphans). There's also a version of The Music Man which... is definitely not good, but is worth seeing for Kristin Chenoweth as Marian (Harold Hill is played by Matthew Broderick in that one, and while I'm not a hater of his like Doug is, he was definitely miscast in that role).

    • @theadaptationstationmaster
      @theadaptationstationmaster 8 місяців тому +1

I actually like the 2003 Music Man better than the older one even though Matthew Broderick is terrible as the lead because the script is tighter, the dance sequences are less boring, and I honestly prefer all the actors in it except for Broderick. It's not a musical that I love in any case. I just think it's OK, so perhaps my opinion doesn't count as much as those of the real Music Man fans.

I think the main difference between this remake of Cinderella and the other “woke remakes” of today is that first off, this film took inspiration from a Broadway musical that already existed not taking ideas from the original Disney film. Secondly, as someone stated before, in the comment section, the actresses that they chose just happen to be the skin color that they happen to be rather than “Hey look, we hired people of color as the main characters isn’t that so woke of us?”
In short, rather than making a word for word, copy, and calling it a remake, they took a different idea, made it their own, and hired actors who happen to fit the role.

Also seeing Kung Lao(Paolo Montalban) as the prince was something I wasn't expecting to see in this movie lmao. This is still one of my favorite versions of Cinderella. But yes, the elephant in the room (that’s already been acknowledged): black Cinderella. Okay…
    …I don’t consider this a race-swap.
First of all, this movie is nothing like Disney’s animated version except for the basic Cinderella premise that, like you said, has been done a million times. It’s not trying to replace the original, either. It’s its own thing, mimicking like a play rather than telling the story straight. Heck, it even premiered on TV (the old “Wonderful World of Disney” block), not in theaters.
Second, unlike modern films, the diversity of the cast isn’t the point. The majority of these actors and singers were big names back then, so seeing them altogether on screen in a familiar story was the selling point. No one (or rather, far fewer people) cared about their skin tones - just their talents.
In fact, you’re actually wrong about the audience’s reaction. In a reverse of what we see today, it was the film critics who complained about a black Cinderella. The American public ate this movie up. 60 million people watched the premiere, and the film is still beloved to this day.

The actors were clearly having a grand time and the goal was to tell a story...a fairytale story. And there was no bashing of a girl wanting a prince charming to sweep her off her feet. If The Little Mermaid remake had tried to be its own thing, or if the focus was more on having talent versus someone who looks like the original minus the singing talent, or if it allowed itself to just be a fairytale and not some dark-epic trying to force logic into a fairytale then the backlash wouldn't have been so bad
