3:59 Upon modding the Wii, and installing HBC and priiloader, the GameCube controller can be used on the priiloader menu and the HBC menu, as well as most of the homebrew apps. Talk about a second plan.
I'm convinced the only reason the Genesis is on there is to remind SEGA who they fucked with when they made those Genesis does what Nintendon't commercials. They didn't even give us the six button controller.
While I personally love all these controllers I would definitely say the N64 one is borderline essential for those games. It’s great to experience these games in the most definitive and accessible way!
These controllers leave one to wonder how long Nintendo plans on keeping Nintendo Online's servers up, I hope they aren't rendered useless in 10 or so years (or whenever the servers shut down) when you aren't able to access the NES, SNES, N64 and Genesis games
This is definitely a long-term infrastructure investment. Why else did they make Nintendo accounts and put them in the Switch? This will be a cross-generational online service.
I guarantee the controllers will be fully supported by the follow-up console and whatever service it will have for retro games. I would expect the NSO libraries to fully make the jump too.
10:10 haha... I just realized that I never knew what the price of a SNES was. I had one in the 90s but of course my parents paid for it and I didn't really have much of a concept of money back then, and didn't even think to ask. Now I'm 44 years old watching this and I'm like, "Huh. So it was 80 bucks." ::nod nod:: Thanks for this review. I was watching a video about super ghouls and ghosts, and something mentioned Nintendo Switch Online, and I was like: "What is that?" And then I was like, "Wait, you can still play super ghosts and ghosts with an actual controller???" (as in: The game still lives on, and you can still play it??) and that's what led me to your video. So it sounds like the controllers are slightly heavier. I wonder if I can play just like I used to. I really loved Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, Super Ghouls & Ghosts, and I think Contra Wars was in there, too. Tempting to get it.... Meh, it's probably just a time-waster and I should actually be focusing on spiritual development and personal inner growth. But still, it brings a smile to my face.
I have the SNES and N64 ones and i'm pretty happy with them. No Home button the snes one is my only real complaint too. Both work great for emulators too
I actually really like using the SNES controller with new third party releases in that retro style. The buttons feel so good and they're positioned nicely if you're only using the D-pad and ABXY
There are famicom and mega drive variants of these controllers and they’re actually cool. I have the super famicom controller and it’s such a novelty to not only have a retro controller, but one that was meant for a completely different market.
One thing I like about the NES/SNES controllers is that 8bitdo makes a Bluetooth adapter with a nunchuck connection that you can use with the NES/SNES Classic/Mini systems and use the NSO controllers with. So when my kids are using the Switch and I've got a craving for NES/SNES I can play on another TV and not have to deal with the 2' controller cord of the NES Classic
One thing I did find out is these controllers could work on certain games for the switch outside of the online service. But that was mainly on the Konami collection games giving you the ability to play each game within those collections with the original controller you would have used such as the first 3 castle vania games or super castlevania with the snes controller.
I look for any excuse I can find to use the SNES controller honestly. I already really love the original controller so being able to play a bunch of Switch games with it is just awesome.
i got the SNES controller as a "screw it, why not" kind of controller last year, and its been my go-to controller for anything and everything retro and especially for nearly every 2d game i play nowadays. plus it hooks up flawlessly to a computer to play emulators with. great for anything from the nes to the gba and even ds emulation. genuinely cannot recommend it enough, especially for $30. fantastic battery life, fantastic build quality, pick one up if you can!!
The 8bitdo sync issues is definitely not just you. I would love their pro 2 controller if it weren't such a pain in the ass to repair every time I use it.
I'm using the SNES pad all the time with 2D games. Only annoyance is the lack of a home button, but I keep my Joycon attachted to the Switch and getting up to the console to 'reset' via the home button on the Joycon is fine, because that's how it was back in the day. :)

Scott’s gonna have a blast at the Nintendo museum. Hey, maybe do a Scott the Woz episode on that. And then do a vlog on Scott’s Stash.
I say it to everyone I can. When used with a 8bitdo wireless adapter on any retro console these are awesome. Good to finally have some Famicom controllers with working microphone. SNES one flawless on the SNES. A Japanese 6 button Megadrive one with my Megadrive. Plus you can mix and match like using the Famicom ones to play Mario All-Stars on the SNES etc. And love the little level up on the switch when you connect them.
I got those nes last year for like 30€ shipping included. They are good, the d pad is well done and the feeling is almost the same of the originals. My best friend bought the n64 and says it’s good, he is a controller snob/fantic so i trust him
I played Mario Wonder through to completion solely using the SNES controller. Worked amusingly well and scratched that retro itch whilst playing something new
I hope they re-release the NES and Fami controllers in the future with USB-C instead of rails to make them more future proof.
Agreed!
It’s got a sync button. It would easily be supported on future hardware. Although the rail makes it awkward, it’s negligible
@@zephiel123 Id like it differently because it makes it look less authentic with the black strip and requires removing joycons from the switch to charge. If you already have a usb cable charging setup already its just a hassle. And the slider standard is likely to change so you need a specialized external accessory yada yada. My guess is they will change it to usb c and hopefully sell in singles
"What, you guys don't have alligator clips and a car battery?" -Furukawa, January 2025 Nintendo Direct
preparing us already i see
3:59 Upon modding the Wii, and installing HBC and priiloader, the GameCube controller can be used on the priiloader menu and the HBC menu, as well as most of the homebrew apps. Talk about a second plan.
Nintendo World Championships with the NES controller 👌
The first Switch first party controller with no stick drift!
I really hope these controllers will work on the Switch 2
I'm convinced the only reason the Genesis is on there is to remind SEGA who they fucked with when they made those Genesis does what Nintendon't commercials. They didn't even give us the six button controller.
The left NES controller can be pretty nice if you're playing a dpad game and want to use an actual dpad instead of using N64 c-buttons.
While I personally love all these controllers I would definitely say the N64 one is borderline essential for those games. It’s great to experience these games in the most definitive and accessible way!
Happy Halloween Woz & your Krew. May y'all be safe and bee good
These controllers leave one to wonder how long Nintendo plans on keeping Nintendo Online's servers up, I hope they aren't rendered useless in 10 or so years (or whenever the servers shut down) when you aren't able to access the NES, SNES, N64 and Genesis games
This is definitely a long-term infrastructure investment. Why else did they make Nintendo accounts and put them in the Switch?
This will be a cross-generational online service.
They are just bluetooth controllers and work on any switch games. They’d still have use even if Online shut down tomorrow.
Lol you hope to rent these games forever?
I guarantee the controllers will be fully supported by the follow-up console and whatever service it will have for retro games. I would expect the NSO libraries to fully make the jump too.
@@johnmickey5017And you can also use them with emulators on PCs.
I really like the controllers for the classic games. They just work. And its awesome how they can work on steam deck too.
10:10 haha... I just realized that I never knew what the price of a SNES was. I had one in the 90s but of course my parents paid for it and I didn't really have much of a concept of money back then, and didn't even think to ask. Now I'm 44 years old watching this and I'm like, "Huh. So it was 80 bucks." ::nod nod::
Thanks for this review.
Both work great for emulators too
nintendo switch online: not many ups, so many downs
We all wait for Scott's analysis to figure out why we hate things
I actually really like using the SNES controller with new third party releases in that retro style. The buttons feel so good and they're positioned nicely if you're only using the D-pad and ABXY
I LOVE SCOTT THE WOZ HES MY FAVORITE WHITE GUY!!!!
The way you pronounce "buh'ins" makes me smile. 😃
10:40 I think, the ZR is used as Home button when you are in the SNES NSO app.
That damn latency though. It’s not terrible, but it doesn’t feel like an NES.
You can change any *Nintendo* branded controllers controls in the switch settings
There are famicom and mega drive variants of these controllers and they’re actually cool. I have the super famicom controller and it’s such a novelty to not only have a retro controller, but one that was meant for a completely different market.
Playing fighting games with the 3 button controller was a nightmare. An absolute nightmare.
Like AVGN said: How do you play Mortal Kombat with only 3 buttons?
Just realized you and scott the woz are same guy pretty cool
I look for any excuse I can find to use the SNES controller honestly. I already really love the original controller so being able to play a bunch of Switch games with it is just awesome.
The Gamecube controller with adapter works on other games on the switch
i got the SNES controller as a "screw it, why not" kind of controller last year, and its been my go-to controller for anything and everything retro and especially for nearly every 2d game i play nowadays. plus it hooks up flawlessly to a computer to play emulators with. great for anything from the nes to the gba and even ds emulation. genuinely cannot recommend it enough, especially for $30. fantastic battery life, fantastic build quality, pick one up if you can!!
The 8bitdo sync issues is definitely not just you. I would love their pro 2 controller if it weren't such a pain in the ass to repair every time I use it.
I've been waiting for this video!
I got the NES online controllers recently, I kinda like that they’re pseudo limited joycons lol
I'm using the SNES pad all the time with 2D games. Only annoyance is the lack of a home button, but I keep my Joycon attachted to the Switch and getting up to the console to 'reset' via the home button on the Joycon is fine, because that's how it was back in the day. :)
