It's cool seeing Jeff "The Skunk" Baxter, Becker and Fagen jamming away, but I'm just partial to their studio version. I probably saw this episode of the Midnight Special. That show along with ABC's "In Concert" were two of my favorite shows growing up. MTV was still down the road! You just never can go wrong listening to the Dan! Nice selection and reaction, John and Harri -- thank you!
@@surlechapeau It's Jim Hodder, their original drummer. Was asked by Skunk Baxter and producer Gary Katz to join the group in Los Angeles. They knew him in Boston (although he's originally from Bethpage, Long Island).
I'm originally from NY, and lived about 15 miles from "Annandale-on-Hudson". That's where Becker and Fagen met & played together in a variety of bands from their time together studying at Bard College. The song is about a drug bust they & their girlfriends were in, and includes reference to "Daddy G" (G Gordon Liddy who was a local prosecutor at the time). Great song! Oh, and an interesting fact.....Fagen did, in fact, go back to his old school, returning to Bard in 1985 to receive an honorary degree.
The Midnight Special was one of the great TV shows, so many great bands. Yep the 70's were the best, that's when I went to my first concert and many more. This was fantastic, love Steely Dan.
Maybe the first Steely Dan song I ever heard. But certainly one of the best and one of my favorites. I still listen to Steely Dan almost everyday and I'm 64. Nice to see them live on stage! ✌️❤️🤟🥁
They truly brought jazz and fused it with rock. Aja was an album unlike anything we had heard before, or since. Brilliance. And yes, the 70s were as magical musically as you surmise. Only to me, more magical looking back than i even knew....
Originally from the 1973 album, "Countdown to Ectasy", a groovy tune about a drug bust at the college they attended. This song is funky and soulful, from Fagan's opening chords, to the groovy horns to Jeff Baxter's stinging guitar solo. 🎸🎸🎸 Wow, a perfect showcase for the unique style the band created with their magical abilities to entertain. Great reaction Harri. ❤ You are right Harri, the 70's were just a great time to be groovin to these unbelievable bands. Thanks John. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦
Thanks for the reaction, Harri. Just to give them their flowers, the two young ladies singing back-up were Gloria 'Porky' Granola (the blonde) and Jenny 'Bucky' Soule. After Steely Dan stopped touring, they performed as a duo, Porky & Bucky.
What a fantastic performance! A great, creative and eminently talented band. Thanks very much for the sterling selection, John, and for your enthusiastic reaction, Harri 🎉
Actually one of the best bandsever, Donald is just a music genius. Whatever Steely Dan did, I loved it, starting with Do it again and later this masterpiece AJA ! Whatever awesome !!
"Jeffrey Allen "Skunk" Baxter is an American guitarist, known for his stints in the rock bands Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers during the 1970s and Spirit in the 1980s. More recently, he has worked as a defense consultant and advised U.S. members of Congress on missile defense."
"'Skunk" Baxter is in the Rock Hall, as he is due, with the Doobies. Steely Dan had so many session musicians, with only Becker and Fagan as constant members -all those who played with SD aren't in. Yet, as some went to the Doobies, some to Toto (who should have their merit!) Bakter and Michael McDonald are in the Hall.
This is one of my favorite SD songs (there are so many!). It’s a real treat to see a live performance as they seem to be few and far between. Fantastic request and reaction. Thanks Harri and John 🌸✌️
@@nancyhelpinstill1834 Too long to go into here. Google it. Some examples: It is partly about their time at Bard college, where Becker & Fagan met. (It is in Annandale New York) (Chevy Chase was there at the same time. He was a drummer). "Daddy G" is none other than G. Gordon Liddy of Watergate fame. A girl they new got busted (hence was with the working girls in the county jail) and squealed, leading to further arrests.
Here you go! I also heard that the section about going to Mexico and Guadalajara refers to a young couple running away to either get married or obtain an abortion (both due to an unplanned pregnancy while in the same college) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Old_School_(song)#:~:text=The%20song's%20lyrics%20tell%20the,California%20tumbles%20into%20the%20sea%22.
"California tumbles into the sea..." -- that line always caught my attention hearing this on the radio when I was a kid growing up in California. It was followed by a horn flourishes down a descending scale to illustrate the sense of falling. That's missing here because the horns are missing from the performance. But they're really rocking hard on it just the same.
Fantastic! This has always been one of my favorite Steely Dan tunes and it is awesome to see it played live, and sounding so good. I wish I was there! And I agree 100% - the 70’s were the pinnacle for great music, at least to my ears 🤘
Jeff "The Skunk" Baxter is definitely and undoubtedly one of the most underrated guitar players ever. The man has played with so many people and bands and has played on so many studio albums it's ridiculous. The man needs some major credit tossed in his direction.
@@garydrewlevine When the conversation about the great rock guitar players comes up you never seem to hear his name come up, ever. So yeah I'd say he's underrated.
If you enjoy the 70s vibe, look up the Midnight Special channel. So many great performances. And how can you not be happy on stage? People paying to see you perform and enjoying it? What better feeling?
Yes, Harri! Yes again. Indeed this would’ve been so great to have seen LIVE! So glad you glommed onto how cool those chicks were. They were! Fun! Fun! Love you, Harri 👏🏼😄
Skunk Baxter (guitarist) is a military defense consultant. He had defeated the defense department in simulated war games. the chairman of the House Military Research and Development Subcommittee, nominated Baxter to chair the Civilian Advisory Board for Ballistic Missile Defense.

Seen this before, but was eager to look at your reaction Hari. They knocked live performances on the head shortly after this, in order to concentrate on studio greatness. They've been a brilliant live band for the last 30 years, though.... There's an F-tonne of really groovy live stuff from the 90s onwards. I'd be happy to suggest a couple.
Between Fagen and Becker at this time, they look like The Son of Frankenstein and The Wolf Man, but ooooh, the talent! The talent!! I've seen them before, but I never realized how big Fagen's mouth is. I'm sure that helps him belt out some of his vocals, though. Awesome!!
If you like backup singers who are really into it and high energy live performances from the past try Joe Cocker singing Cry Me A River at Woodstock. If you can find it. It's worth the effort!
The great Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on lead guitar with a smokin' solo. This is cool, but I liked his studio solo better...The sound on this clip is a little over saturated.

Yes and the DA was G Gordon Liddy of Watergate infamy.
If you went to college in the late 70s or early 80s, you just knew that Steely Dan was singing about you.

Two words come to mind with this performance: Skunk Baxter.
It was the best time for music and the talent was exceptional

Funny how Walter Becker is quiet in the back on BASS...he became much more involved live later on.
I thought that was Becker, the blonde, up front playing all the solos!
Ok, I stand corrected - finally saw Becker behind Fagen. No mistaking those signature specs!
Thank you for this John it is such a great song. Harri's reaction was great also.

Saw them live several times in 1974 along with their last show until 1993.
Great song, great performance. It's kind of missing the horn section though especially in the instrumental break.

Faster than the studio cut for sure. But very cool. A lot of live music back in those days seem a bit "speeded" up iykwim.

The name of the song is My Old School, not My Own School.

Not the best live recording, but you can still tell they were hitting on all cylinders.
He eventually went back to the school to give a speech.
It is wild that Jeff "Skunk" Baxter who is playing guitar here went on to have a second career as a Defense Consultant for the US government.

Just not the same without the saxophone in the studio version
May I suggest a Reggae song:
Fret Not Thyself by Third World
Heatwave tops them all Johnny was just unbelievable his voice was immortal
That was not an alcohol vibe Harry. Maybe some white powder was involved.
Gee, this was pre-Red Bull, so I wonder what had Skunk so amped up…

Audio is not great on this performance, unfortunately. The pace of the song feels a little sped up too. A great band, if not all that great looking.
They don't like the Beatles ? I hate them !! "Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see"
