It's pretty cool when your pal is a world-class recording star and song writer and she let's you cover a song she wrote that's on her "Tapestry" album. Then it just soars to #1 and becomes your epic, signature song and hit. Check out Carole King humbly in the shadows playing piano and making it all about JT! Loved your reaction, Harri -- thank you, brother!

She wrote the song for James when he was depressed and hooked on heroin when he heard a friend of his had committed suicide!

It's been reported that Carol was shy, and hadn't done many 'live' concerts until this point. She was known as a songwriter, for her musical skills, yet until "Tapestry" performing her own songs, around this time, she was rather private. Helping her friend James play these concert/performance on tv, he encouraged her to sing more in public. We have them both, still, as great musicians -both in the Rock Hall (Carol twice, as writer, and performer -the second took far too many years to include her talent).

Although they became symbolic of the LA singer-songwriter genre, this song has its roots in New York City. Carole thought of the lyrical concept while riding the subway in 1967. She met James later that year, playing in a Greenwich Village cafe. While the song was not written for James, she passed it on to him to record in thanks for encouraging her to do live performances herself (she was shy in front of an audience at first). Thanks Neil and Harri.

I actually got to meet Carole King back when John Kerry was running for president. She is an awesome singer-songwriter and active in maintaining our democracy. She sang this for us in a small coffee shop. I have several snapshots of us chatting. She, James Taylor, and Carly Simon were all of the same genre.

In high school, while all the other kids were listening to "In-A-Godda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly, I was listening to this! James Taylor & Carol King can transport me back there every time. This song also taught me how to be a really good friend. It's the whole bag. Thank you Harri, JT & CK & their music will live forever!

What a wonderful choice Neal! When James and Carole toured together in 2010, my husband and I were living in Fort Collins and two of my oldest friends drove up so we could go and see them in Denver. They did one of the best shows together and hadn't lost a beat. Of course, this song meant so much to the three of us. Thank you to you and Harri.

When James says for whatever that’s worth about making this song a single. It was worth a whole career. Two of the great singer/songwriters of all time.

In Fire and Rain, James Taylor sings that there were times when he "couldn't find a friend". So Carol King wrote his song as a direct response. So, he didn't really cover it, it's 'his song', even if he didn't write it.

That's Charles Larkey on bass. Carole's second husband. She'd known him for most of a decade as he was part of a couple of NY/NJ-based bands. After Carole divorced Gerry Goffin and moved to Laurel Canyon, they starting working together and got hitched.
