To join the bandwagon-“if” possible the tiles should go back up. I have admired and been humbled by their survival. They were the only remaining vestige of glamour when you started.
I'm not a restoration purist, but I think the tower would look great with the medallions restored, and replicas made to replace the broken ones.

Oh Dan, I think you should put the ceramic tiles back in place. They really stand out and are so unique. I can't imagine why you wouldn't want to keep these where they were.
They weren't secure. All of the mortar looked to be in pretty bad shape. Also, one of them looked to be broken, so they can use one of the other intact tiles as a reference, or to get a mold to recreate and replace it if they can't repair it
Some were broken is why I think he is removing them.

Please, whatever you do place those ornaments where they were originally. They are something that I absolutely look at every time I see an image or picture or video of the Château.
I am sure there are plenty of people in France or England or in the US, that would replicate the originals, and would donate them to your magnificent work.
But, Please put them ALL back where they belong.
If they do prove cost prohibitive to reproduce, as long as he uses the remaining tiles to decorate the top of the turret, the look wouldn't be too far from the original. Like, if he has 8, then do two on each corner. If he has 3, than just do the three on the front fascia. If he has five, than do the three on the front fascia and one on the right and left sides by the front. ect...
There are other patterns he can do that will still look appropriate without changing the look of the chateau.
How about this, do a separate little fundraiser and I bet half the people on your channel would throw in a few bucks to get those great squares redone… you can see by the response. Those horizontal finials are quite popular. It’s worth a try. I’ll throw in a few bucks.

They are the coolest architectural detail on the chateau, IMO. Ditto on remaking the damaged ones.
I think it will be worth it having the design copied to replace the broken ones. It will cost a bit, but I think it will eat at Dan not to ad them.

Please put them back, they are part of the original design of the castle. Better to replace a few missing ones than to refurbish the originals imo.

Dan, a ceramic artist can copy and imitate damaged or missing turquoise pieces and that way you can reincorporate them into their original place of the turret. They really are beautiful. Greetings

All along I've been fascinated by those turquoise, cream, and brown tile ornaments. I'm sure a mold could be taken from one of the intact pieces, and replicas made. As someone stated, they truly are the crown jewels of the chateau. A lot of passionate feelings for maintaining these details!
Those turquoise medallions are pure Art Deco elements, and are a magnificent decoration - please have the damaged ones recreated, they are stunning. 🤩

@@okwhatevev I have no idea where Dan got the 1886 build date from, every source I've found indicates ca. 1905 (or more precisely some time between 1901 and 1906). Still very much Art Nouveau period though.

The turret was wearing a crown of jewels (turquoise)they have to go back, they are stunning!!
I think the teal tiles should be put back in they are the jewelry of that gem of a house and survived the fire looting and years of weather that wonderful chateau lady needs her jewels she earned it for all the lives she saved. And frankly she's the only chateau I've seen with them that makes it extra special.

Oh you must reinstate the turquoise ceramic pieces! To me they are the hidden gems of the turret. Having survived so much, they have earned their right to be there. It would be easy to make a mold and replace the broken ones. Obviously, my opinion.

Please, put those ceramic decorations back on the tower! The ones, that where broken, you can leave out somewhere, where you can more easily access, because I'll bet, you can find replacements - and if not, they can be reproduced, just like the tiles from the entrance hall 😊 I just think they are really special, and the colours are so perfectly in keeping with the time, the Chateau was built. I was actually going to suggest, that if you need to have some made, you could ask the artisan to create a plaque, that matches, with YOUR initials, and the year, so it can be placed in memory of this huge achievement - the rebuild of Chateau de Chaumont!

The makers mark is on the inside of the tiles. You may be able to track down a few replacements. Worth a shot!

I'm pretty sure a ceramicist could make some to replace the broken ones. They could use an in tact one to make a cast for the new ones. And yes some type of lighting behind them would look great.

But they are opaque, so lighting would have to hit from the outside, in front. I could imagine a thick turquoise glass jewel lit from behind, tho, that would be cool. But I think the focus at this point is thentire roof, windows and other structural necessities. Maybe a design studio would like to sponsor fabrication of the „jewels“, we can dream! 💎💎💎💎
he can do whatever he wants with his chateau. i think they're neat. he has never expressed interest or happiness with them. this building was erected in 1886, it's not an ancient historical ruin. if he wants to put them above a mantle or use them as garden pots that's his prerogative.

The Turquoise jewels will look lovely with the copper, lead and brass patinas on the roof when finished.
There are even ceramic glazes that imitate metallic copper and bronze. The replicas can incorporate them in the birders of the new tiles.
Save the ceramic inserts and have some more made for the broken ones. They need to be back on the turret where they belong. Great job.
I love the decorative pieces you removed. I think you should keep them. They’re like the final touch of jewelry of that favorite black dress. I think copies wouldn’t be hard for a ceramicist to replicate. It’s amazing they weren’t damaged during the fire.

I’ll bet that color was repeated somewhere else. Repeat a color in threes? I would do some research on the original building. The architect had a reason for putting them there.
Totally agree on the decorative ceramic tiles. They are fab, classic, timeless and definitely an integral part of the chateau turret. Was shocked when you suggested they may not go back where they belong.

You should definitely think about putting those beautiful ceramic "thingy mabobs" back into the design. I thought you wanted to preserve the integrity of the original home. Just my two cents worth. Its your home now.
The tiles need to go back! Surely any broken ones can be reproduced. Perhaps a mold can be made of a good one to make a few copies. It's part of the character of the Chateau!
I've made architectural ceramic tiles. A mold from the originals will not work, because clay shrinks. Depending on how many needed, once the shrinkage rate of clay is established, then a mold could be designed to pull multiples.
@@merana59 Ah ok. I don't really know much about making ceramics. I'd imagine there is some sort of process to make a duplicate of another.
@@merana59 It can still be used as a template at least to get the shape. They can take the originals to make a model and then scale it up and make a slightly larger copy for the mold.
@@merana59 I think there were twelve (three on each side) and no more than one side had all of them intact, the back ones were all broken I seem to remember, so we're talking about something like a handful.

That shade of blue green is very Afghani/ Nepali shades of turquoise just exquisite!!!!
I think they are more Egyptian faience, especially since they are pyramid shaped.

I look at the chateau now and think back to the very first episode, the way it looked with trees growing inside and rubble everywhere. When I saw that, I thought it was impossible to restore it at all. But you have now achieved that "impossible", and gone far beyond. You have truly restored a treasure to the world.
