This movie, while tangentially referencing the Airport movies, is actually based on the 1957 movie “Zero Hour!”. There’s a side by side scene comparison posted on YT. It’s a fun watch after you’ve seen “Airplane!”.
''Top Secret!'' (1984) also directed by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker & Jerry Zucker (which I can recommend, and has the same deadpan/silly humor), but the one I really recommend by Abrahams/Zucker/Zucker directing team is (one of my favorite comedies from the 80s) ''Ruthless People'' with Bette Midler and Danny DeVito (everything is 1980s in this hilarious movie, music, clothing, set and production design).
In Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker movies you have to watch them more than once. There's always something going on in the backgrounds. Even the end credits are goofy. You have to watch all the way through.
A wonderful 70's madcap movie that tends to get forgotten is "Kentucky Fried Movie." It's a sketch movie that parodies television and films of the time. Like Airplane! it bounces from one thing to another, and the last twenty minutes are a masterful takeoff on Bruce Lee's "Enter the Dragon". I highly recommend it.
When the doctor says”…give it all they’ve got” he is playing a joke about a Ronald Reagan movie about a college football team. The pilot is Zipp and the nickname in the RR movie is the Gipper. The music reminds us of a football game. This is the second reference to Reagan.
Just a little personal information, the gal on the stretcher, was Jill Whelan, who played the captain's daughter on the TV show "Love Boat" and was my first crush. Love your reaction to this movie!
I have always loved this movie, no matter hiw many times I see it I laugh my butt off. To this day I still use the "Yes I am serious & don't call me Shirley. :)
Actor Robert Hays is a pilot in real life and is actually qualified to fly multi-engine aircraft.. Course, if I got on a plane and Ted Striker was at the controls.. I'd probably start second guessing my life choices...
Watch the disaster film "Airport" with Dean Martin, Helen Hayes, Burt Lancaster, and other famous actors, also, there is a parody called "The Big Bus" starring Joe Bologna. Robert Stack was the original Elliot Ness on the 1960's TV drama "The Untouchables" The pilot Peter Graves, was 9n the original TV drama "Mission Impossible."
Actually, this only inspired the Naked Gun movies in a roundabout way. When Zucker/Abrams/Zucker saw how funny Leslie Nielsen could be, they created the TV show Police Squad for him and that was what the Naked Gun was derived from.
Happy new year guys! ❤ this is a fun one! If you want to add to the spoof list, Val Kilmer’s first movie I believe?… Top Secret… is pretty funny too! 🎉

They filmed the plane breaking through the window by getting a hold of the front section of an actual 747, rigging up to multiple tow trucks and having the trucks back the front of the plane into the window. When they were finished the studio bosses asked them why didn't they just use miniatures for the scene and the directors replied "You can do that?"

@DavidvsFilm Airplane!" (1980) became "Flying High?" in Australia and New Zealand. "Airplane!" or "Flying High"? @Max Stone: No, that was "Police Squad!" [ which was actually a spoof of the old, police drama series "M Squad" ( 1957 - 1960, starring Lee Marvin. ) ] Also, NO - "Police Squad!" was a short-lived, AFTER 'Airplane!' ( 'Airplane!' was released in 1980 ) series ( ran for only 6 episodes, in 1982, ) that later spawned the 'The Naked Gun' movie series.

Hey @djay1066! Thank you so much!! We really appreciate you checking out the videos, and needless to say, Harry Potter is one of my all-time faves. Not to mention Airplane! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts in the comments on other videos also :)
You guys commented about this movie being the reason that movies became more PC. Well that didn’t happen. But what did happen is more interesting. The CEO of an airline saw the movie and realized that there actually wasn’t any policy in place to prevent both pilots getting food poisoning. So this movie caused the rule to be created that pilot and co pilot couldn’t eat the same meal.
We just finished watching the movie and immediately came here to watch your reactions. I feel like me and Marc are on the same page here, but you and my hubby Mike are in agreement lol. I'd like to see you two do the Hot Shots movies.
Haha I told Marc that you said you have his back! I vaguely remember watching the Hot Shots movies, but it’s been a loooong time. And I know Marc hasn’t seen them.
"how they filmed that" about the plane driving in the terminal ... well they build a full sized front of a plane and drove it trough the terminal window ... easy :) was the most expensive shot of the movie :) (best scene is when the women throws her baby away xD) one of the legends says that when the director was asked why he did choose this expensive way and didnt shot it with a model plane he was like "you can shoot that with a model plane?" and honestly i think no you cant this good xD
From what I've heard, the air on planes was better when smoking was allowed since they'd have to pump in fresh air, now they just recycle the same stale air
This movie is stupid, stupid, STUPID! I love it to pieces. BTW, talking about serious actors, Peter Graves (the pilot) starred in the original Mission Impossible TV series.
Hahahaha right?? And yes- I had forgotten that! I don't remember watching the show, but I was a huge fan of the movie when it came out, and I recall seeing clips from the series during hype for it.
This movie was followed by the short TV series Police Squad, then the Naked Gun movies. Anecdotes about the script..... The agent of Peter Graves got a copy of it, then gave it to Graves ( not mentioning it was a comedy ). Graves thought it was the worst script he had ever read. Lloyd Bridges didn't understand the idea of the movie. Robert Stack told him "I take off my sunglasses to show a pair of sunglasses under it. Then a guy removes some laundry from a radar display. What's not to get?"
Bridges ended up being in Hot Shots I and II. It's another seriously-played comedy role, with scenes where it's very tough for a viewer to hold in laughter.
@@randallwong7196 Haha, I only remember two things from seeing the promos. One was Charlie Sheen shooting a chicken from bow? And the other- which I thought was hilarious- was Lloyd Bridges getting off a plane, and a guy says, “How are ya, sir?” And Lloyd Bridges replies, “Hawaii? Goddammit I’m supposed to be in California.”
There is a movie that serves as a predecessor to Airplane! called The Big Bus. It's not well known, yet has just as many stars in it. I think it's just as good, if not funnier. It's not easy to find, but worth the effort.
The beginnings of these offbeat comedies was with a film called "Kentucky Fried Movie" Created by the Zucker brothers (Same creators of Airplane, The Naked Gun movies etc) Directed by John Landis before he made a name for himself. Find this movie. React to it and you will start a trend of people reacting to it. It's lower budget but more wacky than there other films.
If you want to raise the bar for madcap comedy, if you haven't already checked it out, watch "Rat Race". It's got a huge ensemble cast and it's one of the few comedies that made my eyes water from laughing.
You know, I had NO IDEA that Dracula Dead and Loving It was Mel Brooks??? I never saw it (only Leslie Nielsen stuff I saw was Naked Gun series), but I’m aware of it. And also that Linda Blair is in it I think.
"Airplane! (alternatively titled Flying High!)[5] is a 1980 American parody film written and directed by the brothers David and Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams in their directorial debuts,[6] and produced by Jon Davison. It stars Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty and features Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Lorna Patterson.[6] It is a parody of the disaster film genre, particularly the 1957 Paramount film Zero Hour!, from which it borrows its plot, central characters, and some dialogue.[7][8] It also draws many elements from Airport 1975 and other films in the Airport series. It is known for its use of surreal humor and fast-paced slapstick comedy, including visual and verbal puns, gags, running jokes, and obscure humor."
the makeup lady was the directors's mother. the movie is an almost shot fir shot "remake" of the 50s airplane movie Zero Hour! Most of the actors in this movie were veteran drama actors. This was done on purpose. the filmakers thought that it would be much funier to put dramatic actors in absurd situations it woulld work better than using comedians in a comedy. And for the most prt it worked. Leslie Nielsen before this film was a dramatic acroe, after this movie he mostly starred in comedies sch as the Naked Gun movies (also made by the same people). Lloyd Bridges was also like Nielsen. After this movie he starred in the Hot Shots movies. The gag with the horse can be open for interpretation. I think it was meant to say that she was horsing around.

He's the last person who would just sit in a parked cab with the meter running, making that joke even funnier.
No way! Thank you, Clay, I had no idea. This is why the comments are my favorite part of doing this honestly. I learn cool trivia and backstories.
@@ClayLoomis1958 And an actual airline pilot did a reaction video to it and commented that while it hasn’t happened in real life, some pilots have gotten close to duplicating it.
@@Powerranger-le4up My Dad was a captain with TWA, before he retired. I asked him about that scene and he said there was no way in hell that could have happened. He thought it was a funny scene, but his opinion was that most pilots have eyes, and can see a building, and lights in a window, and it couldn't have happened in real life. The thing he enjoyed most about the movie was the captain paying for fuel with a credit card, and all the fun they made of air traffic controllers. lol
@@ClayLoomis1958 I wonder if he knew about that function that sounded like a gear shift. The airline pilot said it was an actual thing, used to help with the fuel.
@@Powerranger-le4up I think someone is playing you. lol My dad knows what a gear shift sounds like (he'll be 95 in 10 days), and he had me up in the cockpit when he was flying us back to New York for a visit. There was no shift knob up there. LOL
I can't count the number of times I've seen this movie. But this is the first time I noticed the call letters of that disco radio station WZAZ, the initials of the writers / directors.
Haha that's true! Good catch.
"Airport," a movie being spoofed here, ended with the scene this begins with, namely, the plane going through the glass wall in the airport.
This movie, while tangentially referencing the Airport movies, is actually based on the 1957 movie “Zero Hour!”. There’s a side by side scene comparison posted on YT. It’s a fun watch after you’ve seen “Airplane!”.
Boy’s Life Magazine @5:59 was an actual thing. I know because I subscribed to it when I was a kid. It’s the magazine for the Boy Scouts of America.
I thought it was a real magazine, but I didn’t know it was the Boy Scouts magazine. Thanks!
"The great Thin Mint fight of 1979." 😹😹😹
You only THOUGHT you knew the whole story...
14:00 For every reaction i wait to see if someone notices that the reflection walks out of the mirror, and nobody does.
I totally did not!!! Haha that’s awesome
They did Ruthless People??? I LOVED that movie as a kid, but I didn't know that was them! "I'm being marked down?? I've been kidnapped by K-Mart."
Smelly Cat? OMG that was hilarious!
Haha yeah he hit it with that one.
In Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker movies you have to watch them more than once. There's always something going on in the backgrounds. Even the end credits are goofy. You have to watch all the way through.
Oh I can 1000% believe this! I am ready watch the Naked Gun series now with an eagle eye :)
Ahh cool! Thanks so much, @Serai3!! I'll check it out.
Happy New Year, Marc & David!!
Happy New Year to you, Peter!!!
When the doctor says”…give it all they’ve got” he is playing a joke about a Ronald Reagan movie about a college football team. The pilot is Zipp and the nickname in the RR movie is the Gipper. The music reminds us of a football game. This is the second reference to Reagan.
Thanks Jim! I knew RR’s nickname was The Gipper, but I wasn’t sure where that came from. Appreciate it sir
Just a little personal information, the gal on the stretcher, was Jill Whelan, who played the captain's daughter on the TV show "Love Boat" and was my first crush. Love your reaction to this movie!
Thanks David! Holy crap you're right! I never would have connected myself, but now I can see her face in the Love Boat credits.
And according to her, her audition was the pucker face.
I have always loved this movie, no matter hiw many times I see it I laugh my butt off. To this day I still use the "Yes I am serious & don't call me Shirley. :)
You can't unhear it! lol. I'm that way with, "The hospital? What is it?"
Good reaction. Glad to see someone's finally picking up the references
Thanks!! Other people miss the references? Shirley you can’t be serious.
@@DavidvsFilm they almost always miss the Mayo reference of the Mayo Clinic. And the fact that planes used to be smoking
Actor Robert Hays is a pilot in real life and is actually qualified to fly multi-engine aircraft.. Course, if I got on a plane and Ted Striker was at the controls.. I'd probably start second guessing my life choices...
Hahaha for real! Great point.
Thanks Eric!
Happy new year guys! ❤ this is a fun one! If you want to add to the spoof list, Val Kilmer’s first movie I believe?… Top Secret… is pretty funny too! 🎉
You know I remember that movie but never saw it! That would be a first for both of us, so thanks- good recommendation :)
Whoa, whoa! Do you have the proper security clearance to recommend that movie?
@@0okamino lol! Well if I have to get it from anything Congress I’m in trouble…
Yeah!! New reactions of this movie in UA-cam.
UA-cam what is it?
It's a streaming service where is lots of videos, but it is not important right now. 😎
Nailed it.
OMG hahahaha. If I were making movies, I probably would have said the exact same thing.

Nobody ever comments on the guy throwing the watch to his girlfriend says, "It's broken, anyway". Or that when the plane crashes through the window, there's a baby flying through the air.
Haha comments on the watch are in the full reaction, actually, but I didn't keep it I the edit because I like the parts with her running into the poles better. Now, you got me with the baby! I didn't even notice that, but I'll be going back to watch again right now.
5 years earlier Abrams/Zucker/Zucker made Kentucky Fried Movie. The sequel is Airplane 2 .
When this was released here in Australia it was called Flying High
Thanks, and hey there from Houston, TX! Yeah I read that was an alternate title for it.
@DavidvsFilm Airplane!" (1980) became "Flying High?" in Australia and New Zealand. "Airplane!" or "Flying High"? Distributors in both Australia and New Zealand changed the title of this classic comedy from "Airplane!" to "Flying High" because they thought it would be too similar to another American movie released at the same time.
Feliz año nuevo mis amigos!🎆🎉🍾 Fun reaction, love seeing you guys laugh!😂 Many smiles from Oregon💚
Hello!!!! :) Hope you guys are doing great. Thank you my friend! I'm a sucker for the comedies.
You were the only one who reacted to the movie Airplane who actually got the From Here to Eternity reference!. All these other reaction ears are like 12 years old and more even born when this movie came out and they definitely don't even know a 1959 classic movie LOL well By the way it was a combination of that movie plus the movie Grease. Now watch Top Secret 😊
The other part with the Kareem appearance. As he was getting dragged through the cabin after getting sick, they showed him wearing his signature goggles and Lakers jersey shorts, minutes after he denied he was Kareem.
Haha yeah we noticed that. Didn’t make it on to the UA-cam edit, but Marc pointed it out. I heard Kareem caught some flak from this, but I love him for doing it.
@@DavidvsFilm Also, apparently Kareem wasn't the producers' first choice for the film. It was supposed to be Pete Rose from Major League Baseball, but as they filmed it in the summer, during Pete's gambling, er baseball, season, he wasn't available.

This film inspired so many spoof comedies. Even then, everyone acknowledged that the comedy was so over the top and juvenile, which was why having such respected actors delivering the lines made it even funnier! For more spoofs by the people who made Airplane! may I recommend Hot Shots! (A spoof of Top Gun) and my all time favorite Top Secret! Police Force was a TV, which spawned Naked Gun movies. The show made before Airplane.
@Max Stone: No, that was "Police Squad!" [ which was actually a spoof of the old, police drama series "M Squad" ( 1957 - 1960, starring Lee Marvin. ) ]
Also, NO - "Police Squad!" was a short-lived, AFTER 'Airplane!' ( 'Airplane!' was released in 1980 ) series ( ran for only 6 episodes, in 1982, ) that later spawned the 'The Naked Gun' movie series.
Hardly anyone catches the post credit scene. Good job!

Hey @Charles G2! Thanks- I did NOT know that, but that seems extremely logical.
We just finished watching the movie and immediately came here to watch your reactions. I feel like me and Marc are on the same page here, but you and my hubby Mike are in agreement lol.

Haha I told Marc that you said you have his back! I vaguely remember watching the Hot Shots movies, but it’s been a loooong time. And I know Marc hasn’t seen them.
"how they filmed that" about the plane driving in the terminal ...
well they build a full sized front of a plane and drove it trough the terminal window ... easy :) was the most expensive shot of the movie :) (best scene is when the women throws her baby away xD)
one of the legends says that when the director was asked why he did choose this expensive way and didnt shot it with a model plane he was like "you can shoot that with a model plane?" and honestly i think no you cant this good xD

Oh really?? I could see that.
This movie is stupid, stupid, STUPID! I love it to pieces. BTW, talking about serious actors, Peter Graves (the pilot) starred in the original Mission Impossible TV series.

Lol @ Robert Stack's comments. I bet this was a fun set.
Goddammit I’m supposed to be in California.”
mike from breaking bad , i never got that before, I remember him from V
There is a movie that serves as a predecessor to Airplane! called The Big Bus. It's not well known, yet has just as many stars in it. I think it's just as good, if not funnier. It's not easy to find, but worth the effort.
Thanks for the heads up, Mike! I’d never heard of it. Interesting
Cannot believe Marc hasn't seen Airplane yet! Such an iconic movie. Also love the Schitt's Creek shirt!
Nope, never did. BUT, he's seen all of Schitt's Creek and loves it. :)
If you guys haven't seen it already, another great comedy with Leslie Nielsen that I would recommend is Mel Brook's Dracula: Dead and Loving It.

@@DavidvsFilm Robert Hays ;)
the makeup lady was the directors's mother. the movie is an almost shot fir shot "remake" of the 50s airplane movie Zero Hour!
