- This is an all-metal Singer buttonholer that dates back to the late 1930's. It doesn't use templates. You can manually adjust stitch density, width of the stitches, width of the hole itself, and buttonhole length. You can find more information about vintage sewing machines at my blog, Male Pattern Boldness.

OMG, one step buttonhole from the 1930s! This is fabulous. What amazing engineering in the foot to make a straight stitch machine produce this fantastic work. I love that you have so many options with this mechanical system. Thanks for posting this.
Just got one of these for my 185K. Thanks for introducing us to it! It's a beautiful little gadget!
I have this version and a later 201. Two superb pieces of engineering. Perfect buttonholes. The process is so satisfying I could spend an afternoon putting buttonholes on everything.
BTW these attachments are usually pretty cheap on ebay (uk).
Thanks so much for this vid. I just purchased a Singer 201and it came with this buttonholer but, without instructions. So glad I found you. I love your male pattern Boldness! My beloved husband was balding and I loved his clean shiny head!
Whoa! This is actually the coolest buttonholer I've ever seen in action! The 4-step buttonholers on domestic machines today don't even come close.
Thank you so much I didn’t know how to use it and with my grandmother’s 15-90 I,m pretty sure I can now make a buttonhole through tick fabric
I love the old machines. I have 9 older machines and use them to teach sewing. I have an old 1947 White w/ knee pedal. It has a great bottom hole maker that works similar to this one makes perfect buttonhole every time. Thanks for the demonstration
Hi Peter, Great Tutorial. I have a 1938 Singer 66-8 and was trying to find a button holler for it. Hence this was the perfect video. Since watching it I found the same exact one on ebay and just bought it tonight. Can't wait to try it out.
I like that you just let the sewing machine do its thing at a normal speed. I see a lot of people on here sewing at full speed. Slow down, it's real life, not a sweatshop :)
Just made my first button holes today with this model and your excellent demo Many thanks.
The directions to this buttonholer says specifically that even if your feed dogs drop the screw on cover plate must still be used. There reason is because of the normal plate on the machine has long slots shaped much like the buttonhole as it forms and causes a drag in the back and forth movement limiting its free movement from side to side somewhat. This is why your buttonholes are coming out narrower on one side. Solution: attach the supplied cover plate like the directions say to do.
I have been reading your blog for years and just discovered this video. Wonderful clear explanation, demonstration, and images! Today I am finally using this buttonholer (which was too frightening to take out of the box for an equal number of years). Thank you!
Maggie McCain Glad to hear it, Maggie! 👍
I will try changing the needle. I did try different fabrics. Thank you so very much for your help and the quick response.
Great video, and convinced me to purchase one!
This video is an unicorn. Thanks for making it so well explained
It arrived and it works great. Thanks for the information.
Thank you for this bit of information! I have a Singer 99, from the serial # I found it was built in early 1942. While delivering newspapers I found it at the curb on trash day, bringing it home I found it was in excellent shape, complete with the attachment kit, instruction book, can of oil and tube of grease, all in the dark green color, belt, cords in excellent shape. I need to make some button holes, I was dreading it, but now I will approach it with confidence! Glad to see that there are other people still running these fine old machines.
That's a great find!
thank you for the demo!
Terrific video. I acquired one of these buttonholers three days ago but had no idea how it works. I tried it out on my 1891 vs hand-cranked Singer and Voila! It made a nice button hole. Unfortunately I do not have the plate to cover the feed dogs which cannot be dropped. Will have to try ebay to get the plate. Thanks again for the video.
Glad you found it helpful!
Great video!!
Just found one on Etsy. Love the vid.
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Peter, we are doing a demo of sewing machine attachments at our North East Texas TOGA (Treadle On Gathering & Academy" I would like to give out the link to your video if that is OK.
Love your blog too
Valerie
Thanks for the great video and love your blog, too. Could you post a tutorial video on bound buttonholes? Also, how is Miss Cathy Lane doing?
Thaks so much.
hello peter, i am wondering, what was the one in the oval box? i have one of them and i was wondering if you have info or a video on how to use that, it has all the different gear things in it , but i have never used one before. at any rate, thanks for the video here , now i know what this thing i have is. i was led here by a search on the patent numbers, lol, your video was the only result!
And works as a Bar Tacker!!
These universal buttonholers are actually used on industrial machines, as well, & sell for over $99 when sold for industrial machines, but are as cheap as $.99 on eBay for regular straight stitch sewing machines.
Rebecca, The industrial buttonholer is basically the same design, but on a much larger scale...I have them both, & the industrial model will not fit any household machine...
Hi Rebecca , Did you mean I dont need a industrial zig zag machine to use these? Now they sale industrial machines with just one stich so I have straith one. but I will love these , can I use it?
I love it! Would it work with an electric machine?
Super
Do you know if this buttonholer will fit a 1941 Singer model 15-91? I am having a dickens of a time finding a buttonhole for mine. By the way, I LOVE your video and how detailed and methodical you are in telling the story. Thanks!
I've never made them!
nice
I have this type of mechine exactly pleased where can I get this I stay in Nigeria
where can i get one
nice video just starting would have been help full to have seen it being attatched like i said just starting nice video
I want to buy it
Thank you for your videos. Let me start off by saying I am very new to sewing. I have a fantastic featherweight 221. It works great on its own but when I put an attatchment on to it; it does not catch the bobbin thread i.e this buttonholer. Am I doing something wrong. I did follow the directions with the buttonholer and your tutorial. Help!
Carey, are you covering the feed dogs. On a featherweight, I believe they must be covered with the flat metal plate that should have come with your attachment.
Carey Price Make sure your needle is threaded from the right to the left, otherwise, it can't pick up the bobbin thread. It is a very common problem people have with Featherweights, because it seems logical that the thread should go from left to right, but if you have the needle in the machine correctly, (Flat side to the left), & thread the needle from the right to the left, it should pick up the bobbin thread with or without the buttonholer. You do need to use a feed dog coverplate to use a buttonholer with the 221. Also, make sure the arm of the buttonholer is over the needle screw, when you install it, but I suspect the needle threading direction is the actual problem. Don't be embarrassed, if it is, most of us have done that at least once, when we first used a Featherweight! :D
yes I did. It chuggs along just not catching the bobbin thread. The machine works beautifully without the attachment. The machine is a 1935 machine could it be the machine is to old for the buttonholer?
It should work. Sometimes I have this problem and changing the needle solves it. Check to make sure it's not the fabric -- does it do this with ALL fabric or just the fabric you're using at present? Hope that helps.
Hola, hola buen día, mira dónde consigo el pie de zigzag y ese pie que muestra en el vídeo gracias bendiciones AMEN.
Which button joker should I keep? 121796 or newer 160506 Using Singer 201. Thanks all
Both will work so it's up to you.
I want by when.......
Cool! Would that attachment work on a 66?
Yes, definitely. I can't remember if the feed dogs drop on the 66. If they don't you just use the feed dog cover that comes with the buttonholer.
Ye mashin kaha milti hai or kitne ki hai
Would anyone know if this buttonholer works with the 31k15 and/or a 201k?
Nathan Gunn he’s using it on a 201. The only difference between that and a 201k is the type of motor, I believe, so yes!
@@bella-bee The only difference with the K is that it was made in Scotland. Otherwise it's identical.
I need 1 buttan holer
Aquí donde vivo ya existen ese pie, y el zigzag tampoco gracias.
No existen corrección
Are you sure you can use the ordinary screw? Most of the buttonholers on eBay are missing the special screw, and I'm told there's no source for them. So if you don't need the screw, I can get a bargain.
You should be able to use the same screw that holds your presser foot on.
@@plappin Thanks - for some reason there are two or three videos that say you absolutely need the long screw...
Try eBay.
YO LO TENGO D LOS ABUELITOS PERO NO SE UTILIZARLO Y NO ENTIENDO SU IDIOMA LO LAMENTO PROFUNDAMENTE
