    I have one with cams, but I've never used it. Thanks for the tutorial, it is done very well. However, I'm grateful for the computerized machine and the automatic buttonhole stitches.

      I have a cam one too but haven't got round to playing it with properly yet. I'll do a little video on it once over worked it out.
      But yes, I also have a modern machine with an automatic buttonhole. Mine is good but I do love the way the old ones work - more from an engineering perspective - so fun to watch it make the stitches 😁

    Thank you for making this very useful video. I had no idea it was possible to produce buttonholes on a vintage straight stitch machine like my 201K until I saw this. I bought one right away. I was amazed to find that it doesn't just produce adequate buttonholes, they're actually of a quality that exceeds those of modern computerised machines I've seen. One thing worth noting is that if you can lower the feed dogs on your machine, and again to my surprise you can on mine, you don't need the cover plate, and this gives you a little more clearance for fabric under the foot. Thanks again.

      Thank you, I'm so pleased. Yes they make really good button holes and so fun to use. Yes my 201k drops it's feed dogs, but my others don't so it's good that it comes with a cover plate 😁

    The Buttonholer cover screw is, as you point out rather tricky to replace. I made a simple tool which makes this much easier. All you need is about 4 inches of 3mm bamboo skewer, cut from the blunt end of the skewer, and about 1/2 an inch of 3mm bore pvc pipe, with one end cut as square as possible. Cut a single longitudinal slit in the pipe wall about 1/4 of an inch long from the square end of the tube. This slit has to be long enough to allow the screw head to be pushed into the pipe, but short enough to grip the scew tightly. Push the head of the screw into the pipe until the underside of the screw head is flush with the square end of the pipe. Insert the blunt end of the skewer into the other end of the pipe and push it down until it just touches the head of the screw. You are now ready to go. Use the tool to align the screw and start it in the threads. once the screw has started in the threads remove it and finish tighten the screw with a screwdriver.

    That little screw that you find hard to fit. Place a small dininium magnet on your screw driver and the screw will stay in place while you attach it.

      I had the same thought, glad I read the comments first. I will add, to demagnetise just hit the screwdriver with short and sharp tap from a metal hammer. Also lol re the material was "pants", ex UK now Aussie, not heard that expression in a donks 😂 and thanks again for your help, just acquired one of these, let the fun begin.

    I have a later version of this. It has plastic cams that determine the length of the buttonhole as well as one of 4 shapes (normal, keyhole, rounded and eyelet). It has the option that you can sew a wide, long zigzag, then adjust for a narrower, closer zigzag. This makes the buttonhole look bound. I was using it all the time on my Toyota machine because I didn't like the 4-step buttonholes and it was hard to get them all identical. Now I have a computerised machine with a number of 1 step buttonholes so my buttonholer is having a short rest.

    FABULOUS! I am only today just cleaning up the 201K treadle left by my dear mum-in-law Anne.....I didn't realise that a straightstitch machine can buttonhole with this special foot - it's moving the fabric instead of the needle position! That is SUCH a great device. I've been searching around for months now for a solid (metal cased and machinery) machine that does variable straight and zigzag with semi-industrial strength and reliability to replace a Frister + Rossmann that's been a good friend for decades (plus I'd love better buttonholes and some of the lovely autocut/lockstitch/needle updowny-ma-trickery). Can I find anything like it ? Can I baffle. Janome do have an HD machine alas it does ONLY straight stitch (which I don't understand) but it certainly mentions nothing like something as clever as this foot on the Singer. Bernina look to be sturdy - but boy do they charge a packet and the upkeep. I am beginning to think that the 1950s are my new best friend...

    • @sewythingy
      @sewythingy  11 місяців тому

      Yes the buttonhole attachment is just gorgeous isn't it!
      And Singer also made a dedicated zigzag attachment as well, which also moves the fabric instead of the needle.
      So for all my sewing I use my vintage machines, but I do own a Singer Heavy Duty 4423. I use it just for the decorative stitches and zigzagging, and with the overcast foot I can almost do an overlock seam.
      And even though the 4423 is great and it is heavy duty, my 1940s 201k and my 1916 66k can still knock the socks off the modern machines!

    • @sewythingy
      @sewythingy  Рік тому +1

      Thank you 🥰 the face plate, as in the cover? is held on with a teeny tiny screw on the side, it might be yours is loose or the screw is missing. But if you pop to a clockmakers shop they may be able to give you a replacement screw that will fit. But, it will still work fine without the cover 🥰

      @@suzannakashima4883 oh that plate. Yes that uses a screw but you could try using a seamguide screw if that fits. Or you could try some very low tac masking tape to help to hold it in place. I've also seen others use some cling film/shrink wrap to cover the feed dogs as this will not harm your decals.

      The feed cover plate is meant to have a "captive" screw that is not meant to be removed from the cover plate (and is really difficult to remove). If yours didn't have one then that's unusual but can happen if people don't realise it's meant to stay put and force it out. The bed screw for other attachments, like the seam guide, doesn't work well at all (I've tried) and isn't slotted to let you screw it firmly in place either. I'd recommend keeping an eye out for another one that has the captive screw.
      In the meantime, I'd follow Sewy Thingy's sterling advice to tape your cover plate down so it can't shift - being sure to use something that won't hurt your machine when you remove it. I'd still try using the normal bed screw as well, perhaps with a little washer between the cover plate and screw (not the cover plate and machine bed), as every little bit extra to hold it in place will help. Finally, stitch slowly so that if your cover plate does shift a little you can stop before you break a needle.
