I'm suprised that no third-party company tried their take on the unicron trilogy, would of made some pretty cool figures.
Yeah especially that a lot of Armada and Energon toys really needs updates in the worst way possible. Cybertron I think they're good enough as they are though I won't oppose to them tackling the more flawed Cybertron toys.
I do and I'm glad those happened. I'm talking about the ones that didn't get updates yet like Armada Optimus.
Yeah I know of that and its a very good figure that holds up well. I'm actually talking about the Optimus that comes with the trailer that he combines with.
Mostly because Third Party toys are aimed largely at collectors, and most of those collectors favour G1 - or at least some later offshoots like Fall of Cybertron and IDW - a lot more than other series. Few look back fondly on the Unicron Trilogy and fewer still would care enough to invest a lot of money into one of their characters.
But yeah, would be cool.
There's a third-party Cybertron Starscream.
I wish Hasbro had made Rodimus a voyages class instead, I think he probably would have come out as a better you if they had, kinda makes me wish they'd revisit the energon and armada lines to fix some things or at least have a third party do it. Energon Wing Saber anyone?
Especially considering that in the Japanese version (Transformers Superlink), this was supposed to be Rodimus Convoy (Rodimus PRIME) and not Hot Rod (Hot Rodimus)...yeah, this should've definitely been a Voyager.
John Evans the only problem was that he combined with deluxe class bots in the show
Yeah. Can't win for trying.
Technically Energon is the third use of the term Powerlinx because Armada used it in two different ways: Mini-Con interactions and the combination of Optimus with Jetfire and/or Overload...
Someone should buy two of them and combine eachoter

It's funny how you call it a normal truck you would expect. In the UK the only time you see a none-flat-fronted truck is when Movie Optimus shows up at TFNation or Toys R Us
This alt mode kinda evokes the Western Star truck Age of Extinction Optimus Prime turned into...10 years early...
I think Rodimus looks cool!
I would like to see a 3rd party version of this mostly to give it more of a compact look
Vangelus described this toy as "does so many things right, but too many things wrong."
it would be interesting to see a modern take on this design without the gimmick interfyering
I actually have some good memories of this one. ^~^
Nice review TJ! I used to have this Rodimus, pretty good figure but I sold it as I didn't need it.
I'd like to see a combiner wars/titans return style section of Generations with power linking. They could probably pull it off better now, and I really love the concept of the gimmick.
Your wish is partially granted in Battletrap.
In fairness, Nova Prime ended up borrowing that leg design to GREAT effect a few years later..
Hey, TJ, I got a little question for ya. So, TFWiki describes this guy's alt-mode as "a rocket-powered Cybertronic long-nose truck cab", but I've always seen it as a futuristic/heavily-stylized Earth truck. (Same goes with pretty much all Autobot vehicle modes described as "Cybertronic" by TFWiki.) What you think this vehicle mode is: Cybertronic or futuristic Earth?
you know what Tj thanks I never had a problem with this figure until you pointed out the yellow fin! thanks a whole lot!!!! LOL!
The vehicle mode is pretty fantastic, but the proportions as whole are pretty off unfortunately....
Sweet review ... thanks for your dedication !!!
Nice review
Dose the Deluxe power links Optimus count as a Plastic Addict figure?
Arise, Rodimus Prime.
the new rid combine force or whatever it was called, looks bad, really bad
I hate using this argument when talking about toys, but they're definitely more aimed for kids.
Peri clod the look of the jet combiner is pretty good though the line does look like a X step changer. The bumblebee / team members ones look terrible though.
yeah the jet guys look decent, but the figures by them selves look bad
though its awesome hasbro brought back the multiforce gimmick and suprisingly enough was more based on that than the super link gimmick
I feel like that can be said for the whole rid line, with bright colors and simple transformations, with many repaints
america always get the shortshrift compared to japan in deco.
Energon/superlink was inspired by transformers multiforce(Dash (car/robot) - Sun Power
Mach (shuttle/robot) - Space Assault - Moon Power
Tacker (truck/robot) - Fire Power
Tackle (truck/robot) - Situation Analyst - Earth Power
Waver (hydrofoil/robot) - Water Power
Wing (jet/robot) - Team Leader, Air Power
Landcross - The team's combined form.
Although any two members are capable of combining to form a single robot, they are usually paired off to form the robots Wingwaver, Machtackle, and Dashtracker. All six members combine to form the gestalt Landcross.)
witch was a exclusive to Japan. the transformers multiforce could combine with one anther the same way the autobot could in Energon/superlink. but the also combined into a gestalt Landcross
This rodimus never skipped leg day
I JUST picked this up. G1 rodimus is my favorite, but this is my favorite alt mode. it's still a flashy somewhat futuristic vehicle mode, but looks so badass. almost like a flashy mad max vehicle.
Hate to pop your balloon, but, they(hasbro) had no intention o that being 2 shades of gold, what your actually seeing is a "fortunate mistake". Having cheeped out by only doing one coat of gold in all spots, you get bleed through from both base plastics, in the red spots it looks light and on the black spots it looks dark. Had they done 2-3 coats of the gold paint you'd see that shading disparity disappear.
tj, have you seen kamen rider ex aid yet?
Oh, god, I never realised how bad this robot mode looked. The vehicle mode is beautiful and I do appreciate the idea of a significantly different take on the character in terms of silhouette and vehicle mode - it brings to mind the idea of a more matured Rodimus, and him getting his own version of Optimus' vehicle mode kinda helps encourage the idea.
But the robot mode is just so off in so many ways. Proportions are a mess and articulation suffers for it, not to mention the arms' positioning being... odd at best. I'd argue even Energon Hot Shot has a better looking robot mode.
There is an official configuration for the kibble in leg mode. I don't know why you didn't show it. It's not good and being that there is no real good way to configure him might as well just go by the instructions. I used this mold for my Saber Prime custome which I no longer own because that figure was donated to charity.
It wasn't shown because there's little improvement over the top half of the toy just hanging there, which was the point of the criticism. Also since the leg mode was just the robot cut it half I didn't want to spend time on it and make this hit 20+ minutes.
because kids can't figure stuff like that (apparently)
oh god i just realized i want the recently revealed voyager optimus tlk figure done as an homage to energon rodimus, i miss mine, one day i was angry with my sister and i played with it and..."discovered" the shoulders can break if moved incorrectly even if a little bit -_-, they totally should have used anoether joint to avoid accidental breakaged of the shoulder balljoints, which already are a bit restrictive
I prefer the French Hot Rod.

Wait,
Combat Class=deluxe
Mega=Voyager
And what was the leader class equivalent?
Imo, best pants in the toyline
I've got this guy packed away in storage somewhere... He's a lot worse than how I remembered him?
The vehicle mode looks really good to me, but the robot mode really sucks. However, this was a good review by the narrator.
If memory serves, I put the arms in a position in leg mode that turns the boosters into "jump jets", not really to fly but jump higher.
I find it pathetic that these guys can be actual toys where those combiner force have to be simplified to absolute buggery. Why can't they just be warriors with that dumb Powerlinx gimmick.
StarGazer The First because they are powerlinking. Powerlinking didn't have a new head, but multiforce did
Jetfire48 so?
StarGazer The First the combined force figures aren't like power linking the most they are more like g1 multi force instead
He's a neat one. Why is he a bit more expensive on the aftermarket?
Tyler Norris Maybe because he was a pretty prominent character in Energon who butted heads with Optimus Prime once in a while. :)
Huh, I always put the door things against teh wheels when I ahd the toy, I never thought to use them to even out under the feet. Huh. Learn something new every day
Tj omega, will you do a kamen rider ex aid gamer driver review soon? I think it will be a really good review
Could Titans Return Galvatron be a good candidate for Plastic Addict? He's a mess: plastic is paper thin in places, panels that have nowhere to go, plastic color that doesn't match, bad gimmick taking up most of his chest, nonsensical "jet" mode, ugly undercarriage and poor balance in cannon mode, loose joints, knees bent inward (japanese schoolgirl syndrome), cannon attachment in the worst spot imaginable. I dare say it was designed to be neither a headmaster nor a triple changer, and the additions were made hastily to insert him in the titans return toyline. Specifically, they removed the head that was stored in his chest (explaining the huge cavity), added the unnecessary cockpit, and cobbled together a third mode. I know you also consider redeeming qualities, but the only one he has is poseability, and that's pretty standard for today's toys (also the huge treads behind his arms are quite impractical). People are spending a lot of extra money and effort just in order to make it a decent figure. And in the same line, for the same price, you had the awesome Astrotrain mold, in two colors. What do you think?
Actually, it was confirmed that he was never meant to be a Headmaster - he was designed before Titans Return and I suppose was originally intended to be a standard Generations release before they decided to put him into TR. Same for Alpha Trion.
See? It was almost obvious :)
Still, I think his flaws are just small hindrances to a great toy. Plus he's already done a review of it in which he said much the same thing; he likes the figure.
Those "flaws" with the exception of the mask gimmick and the cannon placement are just minor nitpicks. He's greatly engineered, his cannon and robot modes look great and he's a good figure in general. Nowhere near as bad as previous Plastic Addict victims.
was i the only one who used to flip one or both of the hands back into thruster mode to act as weapons in robot mode?
im curious has there been any newer repaints or was this mold a use then throw away mold
There was a repaint in a two-pack called Checkpoint, where it was done as a white SWAT truck, and Japan did a version in black with red flames.
And a Thunderclash. Surprised we never got a Combat Optimus. This would have been a near perfect update...
Do you think this would work as a Optimus primal mold? With those jet boosters and shoulders i could see it. but what about you would would you like to see another revisit to this mold TJ?
It also got a redeco for Botcon 2009 in the form of Thunderclash. Vangelus also came up with a cross-continuity Powerlinx mode with that Thunderclash and this Rodimus. He called it _"Thunder Rod."_
I can't look at this robot mode and not think of megas xlr. i guess it's cause of the flames all over it
TheSonofstark Megas XLR doesn't look like this at all though also hot rod had flames since generation 1 so it's not really a good comparison
Jetfire48 He just said he was reminded of him, not that he looked like whatever you guys are discussing.
This looks like my old toy from back in 2005.
Ah yes, Roddy 2 Hotty. Beautiful.
Nice review TJ. One question though. Have you ever tried combing an energon toy with itself? For example Inferno with Inferno? Is it even possible?
It's rare when I've had two of the same Energon figure to do that, I've done it with repaints like Downshift and Botcon Slicer, the connections are universal so of course it works. The result is a really solid and uniform looking bot.
Woo Hoo!, i was waiting for this review since your energon prowl review
Giant wading boots.. I can't unsee it, now. :D
could see it as a soundwave with the wheels being sound things
ahh upgraded hot shot
does any one remember code lyoko
man that looks awful
The Fanriot it's all in the proportions, the individual parts look really good, the wheel shoulders look awesome but are placed on a tiny body in a weird place. Then the legs are massive the look good but not on the tiny body with a lack of a waist

Peanut head, Elton John boots, energon autobots were just plain bizarre, but fun.
