A fun trick I use from old PC building days for zip ties... Use nail clippers to cut the extra bits flush. No more sharp edges to cut yourself or plants!
Cool video! Interesting explanation to the inch worm ordeal. I always thought it was the opposite (Petiole is too tight and dry, so new growth curls when emerging). But regardless most plants mature out of that phase. I'll be waiting for updates!
Use moss poles if you can be bothered with the maintenance as you can keep sizing them up more easily than boards, i.e. poles with two sections, plant grows to top, cut in half and plant top section back in soil pot and extend with black pole above to let the plant keep growing up and getting bigger. Repeat.
@@petevsplants7516 Rose- Dixie was giving to me by a friend of mine in my teens. She always said we needed aliases. I still see a couple people around that call me that I still answer🤫
Two things that I have found helps with the ‘inchworming’ effect. Air circulation, a fan helps with the plants movement and just those gentle shakes and movements help with the plant pushing those leaves out. Also increasing the humidity, once I get plants onto the moss poles that should help with the humidity increase the leaves started coming through easier for me
Also super excited about Splendid, mine just got an extension as well which I’m excited about, I have a second vine coming up but it’s a long way behind
My white princess has always been an inch wormer, even after moving her to a cabinet with high humidity and a fan she's still at it. :( Some plants are just drama queens.
Hey A S. Yeah, it's pretty annoying... I think it's probably just how some plants are morphologically more so than it being a humidity thing or air flow, etc. I have plants spread out throughout the house in different places getting loads of humidity and airflow or much less and they seem to have a random spread that doesn't correspond to just low humidity or airflow :( but hey, I might just not be doing it right... the air flow to get movement in the plants might be the issue.
Hey Aussie Horticulturist. Mmm I'll have to see if I can change things up with air flow and humidity in places then and see if it makes a difference. And thanks re: Splendid haha they're vicious in terms of growth. I love it!
Awesome vid Pete! I'm terrified of extending my poles, so far when my babies get to the top I disassemble the pole and chop them up and re-pot because the nodes all have roots already they do well but it'd be great to extend and get some big juicy mature leaves one day! How good is finding multi-planted plants? I already had a Verrucosum but found one at bunnings with 6 individual plants in one pot. Given it's my absolute fav plant of all time and I paid $75 for the one I had, you better believe I bought this one! Went back the next week and found a Sodori same deal, heaps of plants in one pot. I wasn't intending on getting one at all, there's already plenty on my actual wish list and I try to limit plant purchases to plants on that list but who can say no to so many plants for the price of one? Bunnings will be the death of my plant budget. My white Princess is the WORST for inch worming, which is heartbreaking because it deforms all her beautiful leaves :( Even in a cabinet with high humidity and a fan she's still being difficult. Lucky she's pretty or I'd ditch her. Good luck with the move!
Thanks A S! Yeah, give the extension a go, especially if you have nice juicy aerials going into the moss, you should be fine even if you decide to chop and re-extend. Those roots should have you laughing. And what a find re: P. verrucosum haha 6 in one! Winner! Sounds like you're stocking up on the same Enliven plants I am haha Do you have an instagram or something where I can check out your plants and how they're doing? I"d love to see :D Msg me on instagram if you do :) Sorry to hear about the white princess. I might be able to hook you up with a nice specimen in the future if I chop and prop mine and it proves to not be an inchwormer haha guess we'll see. They are amazing though! Thanks re: move! Fingers crossed all the plants survive unscathed :S
I attempted to extend a moss pole. I bought a Piper Crocatum that already came with a pole and it's outgrowing it. It was a complete FAILURE! Ay Dios mio! I am not into moss poles really; I do not grow my plants vertically in a pole, I try to make mine wide and bushy. However, there are a few plants I've noticed that do not grow nicely if they do not have support or a pole. I really like how you did yours, it looks full. You have several stems growing onto the pole, nice! Do you have an Epipremnum pinnatum? Do you have yours in a pole? I have one and it grew a long stem with a small leaf at the tip and I think it needs a pole. Do you think it needs a pole? I might need to venture into doing moss poles. Sorry for writing paragraphs. Hablo mucho! Adios! from El Paso, TEXAS :)
Thanks USA 45! Hopefully it takes and grows well up the pole. Yeah I've got a few different types of E. pinnatum. Cebu blue is on a pole though it's only just getting started. I've got an albo too but it's only 3 leaves and just getting established. I definitely want to get both onto poles so that they can get insane leaves one day! If you want them to get big, I'd say they need a pole or some other thing to get vertical.
I'm pretty sure you're probably familiar with your fellow aussie youtuber sydneyplantguy but if not he's worth checking out... he has a specific moss pole method for growing big aroid leaves
Hey there Pete!! May I ask what you make the moss pole with...been trying to figure out what people use because I need to get a couple of mine on a pole after vacation next week!! Thank you! Nice video also!!
Hey mate, it's fencing from Bunnings. I think it's roughly 1cm x 1 cm square holes. You just want some kind of fencing (probably square holes) that has great structural integrity when in a cylinder. I think the hexagonal chicken wire would probably warp a lot more easily in that shape if you used it.
Hi Pete! Loving your channel! Can you tell me what your substrate mix is comprised of, and the rough ratios? I remember you telling us in a recent video, but I cant seem to find which video it was.
Hey mate, thanks so much! I kind of eyeball it now, but roughly: 1 part worm castings 2 parts soil 3 parts perlite 3 parts pumice/volcanic rock 4 parts orchid bark/wood chips Ultimately, the exact ratio doesn't really matter besides only have a little worm castings for fertiliser. You just want it chunky so the water runs straight through. I still use a little bit of soil just to hold in a bit of moisture for longer as if it were just the last 3 ingredients, I think it'd dry out too fast.
@@petevsplants7516 @Pete vs Plants Thank you so much! Worm casting is the only fertilizer I use. I guess my substrate is pretty on par with yours, with the exception of the pumice, and I believe I remember you mentioning charcoal as well. Im a "new" plant mom (a year now), and have 100+ plants now, but I love learning from your vids! Thank you!
Yeah, I forgot to mention I do mix in a bit of charcoal too though it's just a random amount usually to help the chunkiness if it needs it. Pumice wise lol I just get the volcanic garden rocks from Bunnings hehe. Thanks for the support, mate! Hope they're entertaining
@@petevsplants7516 Thanks Pete! Im thrilled when you post a new vid! I may even try to dabble with some leca since you make it look so easy. I dont think we have Bunnings in the states, but I assume its like Walmart
Most commonly in my experience the stuck(inch worm) emerging leaves are due to low humidity(although I suspect not your issue?). I have to spray some of my aroids with water daily when new leaves are pushing. I've found some species are more prone to this problem.
Yeah, it may be an issue for some plants more than others perhaps? Not sure... I've tried misting other plants that have that issue and had mixed success. And you're right where it seems different plant species have different issues with it, though it's funny that the same plant in the same conditions here had mixed problems.

to give your self an extra hand. You might use some of your velcro (temporary) to hold the moss pole to you stake; then zip tight

Low humidity is likely the culprit here. Placing them in a humidity tent should help the unfurling leaf open the petiolar sheath without any trouble.
