My oldest son is in his early 20's and he has type 1 diabetes. But thank God for this piece of article ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxVYhghKWmrUgXARZ_ydZTvmmcrw5L0I5i At first he thought he had the flu and was lying down on the bed for three days until his sister took him to the hospital. They took his blood and it was 600. What I do not understand is how he could have gotten it, since no one in the family has it. But he is winning the battle now. This is good stuff.
38 years old, type 1 diabetic for 22 years. There was talk of a cure back when I was diagnosed. I’m always happy to see progress, but I’ll believe it when I’m cured.
This is true. While I don't have either t1 or2,I've also heard "cure in the works" for years and having had kin and friends with t2,I always kept an eye on this. I have a friend now at end stage t2 diabetes and know people who put their t2 into remission by stopping the standard American diet and switching to keto. I've done keto for 15 years to prevent diabetes...Anyway,I don't see any cure working in the long run as long as people continue to eat processed HFCS,seed oils, sugar laden crap promoted on tv and sold everywhere. The drug industry is working on a drug that mimics what the ketogenic diet does...I hate to think how much they will charge for it..It won't be pretty. Just my two cents here.
The first thing all you veterans told me when I got diagnosed as an adult was, “there is a cure 5 years out, is what they’ve been saying for two/three decades.”

I’m 31 years old, and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes less than 6 months ago. The 180 degree lifestyle change has been incredibly difficult, and it creates constant stress. It’s really encouraging to see treatments like this in development. I’m hopeful!
Keep up the optimism man! I was diagnosed just prior to turning 22 and it honestly took me a year or two to feel like I had my head wrapped around everything. It was/is rough. Over a decade later and I still have bad glucose days from either me making a mistake or because one of the other variables beyond control.

dwagner49 I was diagnosed with T1D in 1978. I was told by one of the Doctors treating me then, that I was "lucky" in that I would probably live long enough to see a cure. Over 40 years later, I, like you, am still waiting. Personally, I don't think it will happen (a cure for Type 1 Diabetes) for a long, long time. The reason being that a cure would collapse a whole industry, and many Doctors careers. Too many people are making money from it. Name ONE disease which has been cured in this country at least during the past 50 years. I can't think of one. If a cure comes, I think it will come from a European country.

My wife of our 44 year marriage developed T1D when I first met her at the age of seventeen. She was determined to not let it interfere with her life nor let it be public knowledge and kept it in her background with great effort involving regular Dailey testing and multiple daily injections. She found pumps to indiscriminate and uncomfortable and kept using injection with ever changing mixes of long and short insulins depending on her physical demands and variations. She is currently using remote blood testing that transmits to her phone giving signals when parameters are breached keeping tight blood sugar control with little effort. Now in her sixties she has no side effects from the disease and continues to live and do the things she wants when she wants. She is now a mother of three and grandmother of seven

I've had T1D for 58 years and have seen unbelievable changes in treatment. The first was home glucose monitoring in 1980, which changed everything. The second was reliable CGM several years ago. During all that time, beginning in 1963, a "cure" was 10 years away. I've come to see that as an empty promise, which I assume was stated to try and buck up Type 1 diabetics. At this point, I would definitely not take an immunosuppressive drug to reduce my insulin requirement by 92%. So, this may become a safe, viable therapy in time, but not in my lifetime. CGM keeps my A1c at 6.1, which is good enough for me.
People keep pushing me for a pump, but I’m managing things pretty well with injections (I started at 36, so I don’t have the lifetime of being worn TF out), and my last A1c was almost borderline upper limit of the reference range. So, I’m fine. I was warned first thing that cures have been in the works any time now for decades, so I’ve never let my hopes get up. Also, I’m pretty insulin sensitive, so I barely use any insulin in the day. I have no problem going through 300 units of Lantus within the time limit, but I really can’t use _less_ Novorapid… I’m already throwing a bit out every 30 days. I also would definitely not choose immunosuppressants for decreased insulin use… I just really don’t use much. And now that i live in the EU, I’m far less worried about “what if” or where my next dose is going to come from.
I agree with you - I’m concerned at rejection prospect or rogue cells. I personally think with the knowledge we have and the technology, the artificial pancreas is the most effective solution.
Yeah now they need to find a way to prevent the body from attacking the stem cells. And that requires unbelievable amount of medication/physical health cost
44 years old, type 1 dia. For 31 years and currently suffering from complications to my eyes, kidneys, feet and my brain as i can’t afford the existing technologies like CGM and insulin pump to keep things under control. I’m happy to see this massive breakthrough in finding the cure for this horrible disease (I call it the slow cancer) but I don’t think further progress will come to surface anytime soon as it means big companies producing medical equipment and medication for diabetes will face massive sudden income loss, and until they control whatever solution will come next to ensure money flow, they will not allow a full cure to come out now. Fingers crossed, I can peacefully die in the coming few years that left of my life knowing that next generations will not have to go through the suffering that all type 1 Dia. Patients went/are going through. God bless all those who worked on this amazing achievement and hopefully more to come in the future.
There has been type 1 diabetics that got it under control with a plant based diet. But because not enough people do this, it’s not talked about. You can prove doctors wrong. 🙏❤️
if you keep your a1c low, you will not have all these complications... eat a low carb diet and your sugar levels will not spike after meals.. this means eating veggies, meats, some fruits, cheese and yogurts. cut out processed foods, sugar including soda, RICE, BREAD and Potators. and never eat pizza or spaghetti. If you question a food... eat it, then check your bloodsugar 2 hours after that meal, if your spiking above 180, never have that meal again!
Have you tried the Libre CGM Device? It has an app that can be shared with family members as well as your doctors office. Prayers that you find strength and healing ❤

"5 years away from a cure" is a phrase I’ve heard for nearly 26 years. Fortunately I have been able to reign in my hopes and expectations, but for a long time I just didn’t take care of my t1d because I was sure the cure was coming along soon enough. All of this is exciting, but if you’re new to following diabetes cure news, please consider this quote from the video: "you have to be healthy when cures arrive." Think of each scientific breakthrough as another incentive to strive for even tighter control of your BGLs, another reason to stay healthy so that you can, eventually, enjoy your diabetes-free body in full health.
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes super late (almost 30 years old. I actually hear this is becoming more common). My blood sugars were relatively normal until summer of 2018 (I was 28). I started to feel so sick and lethargic. I lost 20 pounds without trying over the course of 1-2 months and knew something was seriously wrong. I had blood work done at a clinic at my job and my A1C was 14.6. I ended up going to my doctor not long after and she ran more blood work and sent it to a lab to see if I really had type 1. Sure enough the markers were there and I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in November of 2018. It has been a rocky road but I’m staying positive and hoping for a cure one day. To my type 1 family, I love you and hope that one day soon we can make our own insulin again. ❤️
Hate to break it to you champ, but if they cure diabetes they will destroy a 100 billion dollar market. It's not in their interest to cure diabetes, it's in their interest to sell things and medications that do not cure it. Eskimos do not get diabetes. All they eat is meat and animal fat.

Until everyone can get this treatment, CGM should be covered by insurance for every diabetic. I was told I was pre-diabetic but my insurance will not pay for CGM unless I am on insulin. I bought the CGM myself and by closely monitoring my sugar levels in real time, I have improved my A1C significantly enough to stay off of medication. Now I only use a CGM once every few months or so to make sure I am staying on track. So far so good. Information is power. Why insurance companies won’t pay to keep people off more expensive life altering drugs is beyond my comprehension.
For type 2 diabetes (T2D, I highly encourage you to watch the UA-cam channel Beat Diabetes. The man has had T2D for many years. He uses just a glucose meter and testing how high body reacts to various carbohydrate foods. Also, I encourage you to read: "The Obesity Code" and "The Diabetes Code" both by Jason Fung, MD "Why We Get Sick" by Benjamin Bikman, PhD. "Diabetes Epidemic and You" by Joseph Kraft, MD, MS, FCAP. "The Big Fat Surprise" by Nina Teicholz. There are a lot of other great books. Due to all the T2D and obesity in my family, I just assume that I have type 2 diabetes in situ, as described by Joseph Kraft, and eat 20 or fewer grams of carbohydrates per day. While at the in situ level, T2D can only be diagnosed using a 2-hour insulin assay test. A CGM or glucose meter would do nothing to help me.
@@kimberlycooper4170 Exactly, "The Diabetes Code" is amazing. Particularly, is it chapter 4, the deep explanation of how metabolism works; including glucose/insulin/etc, was absolutely fantastic. It's the most empowering and informative book I've read since, well, probably since about 10 years ago when I stumbled on the 'eat real food' nutritionists and moved away from highly processed "foods" from a box. "The Diabetes Code" definitely rises to the level of a "once in a decade" book for me. Excellent suggestions. "The Big Fat Surprise" is a close second for the most impactful and informative.

I've been T1D since 1984 & said back then that besides being cured of it, the next best thing would be to know what my sugar levels are at any time. I got a libre 2 cgm last year & it has made a massive difference. I do physical work which can cause sugar levels to drop fast. Now I know as I can easily check & if I'm too busy & they drop then it starts bleeping before they get to low. I live in England. Luckily in over 38 years no long term nasties have appeared. A cure would still be great, thanks.
I'm glad she mentioned that even if you do everything the same way, everyday a diabetic can still have difficulties managing blood Glucose levels. No day is ever the same. Something that worked yesterday to keep Glucose levels in range might not work today or tomorrow. I'm not sure how hard a cure would be to make but I also think it's about money.

Hi Bahrah, T2D is 100% curable and T1D can get quite close to being cured. Every one if different but you, your family and your daughter could substantially reduce the impact of it on your lives to the point it's almost an afterthought. Interestingly some of the same change that make this possible work for both T1D and T2D. I'm happy to point you to some of the doctors etc who have done work in this direction to help you out. I have no "dog in this fight" so I have nothing to gain by this. I just want to help, if you are interested.

I’m so sorry!! My son got diagnosed a few weeks ago. He is 4. I haven’t stopped crying since. I know it’s not a death sentence, but no child should have to live with that many injections per day & the mental load of when and what to eat.
I'm 30 years a T1 and whilst treatments have improved hugely since those early years, it is still a hard condition to manage. Its true you can do the same things on different days and get different results. The internal dialogue is constant 'what am i doing now? What am i doing later? What if i exercise and what about after if i eat this or that..?' If i'm ever cured that will never leave me. People think its about not eating donuts etc., if only that were true. I have ran marathons and travelled the world and much more, however all needs planning and its difficult sometimes.
I have been a T1D for over 61 years this month. I was diagnosed and hospitalized on Valentines Day in 1961 at the age of 9 mos. I have been lucky and don’t have many of the complication issues due to excellent care over the years and most of the time it’s been serious hypos I have had that caused issues for me. But I also don’t want anti rejection drugs which could cause organ failure or cancer. When you find a way to do it without, I’ll be glad to be the next in line to try it.
Try keto, you won't be hungry, or starve and also lower your need for so much insulin. You will lose weight (inflammation goes down first, lose water weight) and be healthier too. It's not a diet, but the proper human diet.
I hope its real and it works the only problem is that diabetes is a muti million dollar business for lots of companies and i bet they will try to suppress this cure for profit gain.
The same company developing this cure, is a major insulin manufacturer. They're not going to suppress the cure. They're just going to charge your insurance $300,000 for it

In your case, you are young and you should not be jaded about past pronouncements of cures on the horizons. Honestly, I think we are three decades away. There is scientific progress, but it slower than people's optimistic expectations.
Find a way to get a CGM and get on an Analog insulin. Learn your carb to insulin ration. Less carbs...less variability. You will be OK...not perfect, but OK.

All this research is amazing and I dearly hope that a cure is around the corner for real this time. One thing though: as a type 1 diabetic for 20+ years, it bothers me if people say that one cannot eat sugar as a diabetic, which is simply false. While each case is highly individual, one can eat sugar just as a normal person can, as long as you know your body and how it will react, how much insulin you need for x amount of carbs etc. Other than that it’s just like with any other person: too much sugar isn’t healthy, obviously, again, just like with any other person.

@Roxy Lasch well maybe I am missing something here I thought that if you eat pasta your sugar would just simply go up but you're saying that yours was low from pasta wow how does that happen
@Roxy Lasch Because: •If you have T1D you would have had to inject a lot of insulin, risking too much insulin on board •If you have T2D, you have too much insulin produced, and suddenly body releases it into cells causing a hypoglycemia. Grains of all sorts are a problematic food for All Diabetics. Meat and low carb, non-starchy vegetables plus some healthy fats are best. (Avoid processed seed oils)

I can still remember when my youngest son who is now 31 was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 20. came home from a mission trip with all the well known symptoms. the scary part was he was enrolled at a college some distance away and classes started a week from his diagnoses. I did have a talk with him about he could make this easy or hard and to take good care of himself. he found a dr and an endocrinologist and had regular appointments. he has done an amazing job taking care of himself. he now has his blood sugar levels on his phone and a pump.
my fear isn't that they will never find a cure.. its that they will find it and charge either exorbitant amounts of money for it or patent and shelve it and then hold onto the patent forever.
Their is a cure for diabetes is not an auto immune problem, it's mycotoxins in your blood stream fungus mold is pushing up your pancreas that shut off your insulin reseptures that's what it is, many doctors now teach this, but many still believe is an auto immune problem, this is crap and a lie, I was once diabetic and I'm no longer diabetic I reversed it by a book called thefunguslinktodiabetes by Dr mark holland and Doug, you learn not to eat bread no cheese no mayo mustard and pickles they put contaminated vinegar in those products eat blueberries and raspberries and grapefruit and granny smith apples, no peanuts or peanut butter no corn, get on chromium picnolonate,be careful it lowers blood sugar but it also kills the bad bacteria around your pancreas, work with your doctor, until your off your insulin, do the phase one diet in the book religiously I hope I made your day, God bless.
Patents are only enforceable for 20 years. No company is going to shelve a product during that 20 year window; it costs money to apply for and maintain a patent
My son was diagnosed at the age of 5 he is almost 7. This disease is so awful for children. As a mother who has to do the care 24/7/365 I plead with the medical community to please help my son to have a future without Type 1 diabetes. It is so hard for them to have a normal life as normal children and to be in a school setting, their freedom is gone. Their life revolves around the disease everyday non stop.
I know where you are coming from Natasha, my son was diagnosed when he was 5, he is 14 now. In the beginning we get a crash course for week in the hospital in 🇿🇦 how to manage their glucose levels , test every 2 hours. Constantly plan the day, eating at set times, low carb, exercise- hypoglycaemia , staying awake until 2am, not really falling asleep every night, always having an alarm clock built into your subconscious. You feel like any mistakes could cost them their lives, if not instant, a knock on effect as they get older and that weighs very heavy on a moms heart. My son has been on the pump for 1.5 years and it has been an absolute life support. I have also heard the saying the cure is just 5 years away, but it feels like déjà vu, it was hope in an impossible situation trying to explain to a 5 year old, how the rest of their lives would be. I hope our children can experience something close to a cure within their young adult lives without having to replace a “cure” for an alternative treatment of immune suppressant meds. Wishing all T1 diabetes Childers and their parents strength , endurance and hope.
@@crystalchristie2743 ❤ thank you for your comment. It makes it easier when you are able to talk to someone in the same boat...yes eventually when my son get a little older we are going to get a pump for him. Then keep our fingers crossed that he will wear it ...
Read the book thefunguslinktodiabetes by Dr mark holland and Doug kaufman, children born or have type 1 have to much mycotoxins, fungus pushing up your pancreas that shut off your insulin reseptures, that's is what makes type 1 diabetics, it's not an auto immune problem even though many doctors try and say that, talk with your doctor and tell him your going to put your son on the phase one diet in this book, it's a wonderful book many people including myself have reversed diabetes on this book. I did six clinical trials for CGM's and I learned about how these companies have to jump thru many hoops to get the systems or drugs approved by the FDA. That is why R&D costs are so high. Also you need the guinea pigs (me) to allow them to use you as a test subject. For example I had an IV in my hand for 12 hours and the nurses would raise my BS and test my blood then lower my BS and test my blood. All the while I had two CGM's attached one blind and the other real. It was amazing to see the hoops that the staff had to jump thru on each blood draw. There were about 15 staff members per trail. Anyway I would sign up for the Vertex clinical trail if they offered it to me.
It is actually frightening how common diabetes has become, both Types 1 and 2. In fact, growing up, I only knew one person who had diabetes, Type 1, and he was my high school Biology teacher. This was in the early 1980's.

I am a T-1 and while the advancement sounds exciting with great results thus far, I still don’t think it will happen in this decade. Like they said, I have been told 5 years every 5 years for 23 years since I was 12. I hate to be that guy, but I will believe it when I see it (and qualify for it). As a consultant I also do not know many business actively trying to put themselves out of business. Which is what the major insulin companies would be doing with a cure.
I'd rise up and fight to get access to curing my type 1 diabetes if it was a possibility. Frankly, our yearning and thirst for a cure is greater than their desire for profit.

Type 1 diabetes is not discussed too much in Malaysia, it’s either diabetes or no diabetes. Diabetes in general is so prevalent it has been described as something like one in five! I just lost a friend yesterday to type 2 diabetes.
@@SRnr16 Diet and exercise go hand in hand. I was T2 diabetic, changed my diet to very low carb (< 20g/day). My blood sugar has been normal for 3 years since changing my diet. It's challenging to eliminate carbs from our diet but if a T2 individual wants to live, it must be done.
I’m 52, and have been type I for 24 years, and I find this study and all studies fascinating, but I’m definitely with the “heard it all before” camp I’m afraid. But having just watched this video, could someone tell me why can’t they produce Beta cells from the patients’ own stem cells, therefore negating any autoimmune response? Or am I missing something?
@@jojojojola .... There's a lot more to being diabetic than people realize. I'm Type 2. I'm also autistic (only recently diagnosed, 41 now, was 38 when I was diagnosed,) have severe depression, hyptertension, anxiety, and a host of other problems. I had issues before I got diabetes, obviously. But after that all the symptoms of my other issues got dialed up to 11 along with a bunch of new symptoms. Maybe one or two would be manageable, but trying to monitor my mood, cook so I can eat healthier, do everything I need to do...I can't work any more and I can barely function. Before diabetes, I was functional, if just barely. It makes you tired all the time, it makes you in pain from the neuropathy, you have to jab yourself with needles multiple times a day....People really don't understand the severe impact diabetes has on your mental as well as physical health. And type 2 is possible to get genetically too. I have it, my father has it, my mother has it, my grandfather and grandmother have it, my brother has it. I'm the only one of those that is overweight (a legacy of the emotional problems caused by undiagnosed autism and other mental issues for so long--I sought refuge in food when I was young and then never got the weight to come off despite trying.)
try fasting and a carnivore (plant-free, sugar-free) diet. There is a lot of evidence recently that you can put T2D into remission by doing a ketogenic or even better carnivore diet. Also, plants in the diet have been shown to cause depression and anxiety so a carnivore diet is ideal...
I'm type 2 and eat low carb.. Meats cheese, veggies, eggs, some fruits that are low sugar... I cut out Bread, rice, potato's, and most processed foods. My BG never spikes. If im unsure of a food, I eat it then test 1.5 to 2 hours after the meal. If i'm going above 160-180... I cut my portion or avoid that food. The less you spike after a meal, the fewer the complications. A typical meal would be meat, salad, cheese, hard boiled egg, greek yogurt without sugar, berries.

I have been a T1D for 20 years, since I was a kid. The grim reality I that even with these advances, cutting edge therapies and advancements are not an option for most people due to cost. I have "good insurance" and I still can't afford the cgm that my endocrinologist prescribed for me. Even with the bare necessities for living with diabetes, my costs exceed $200 a month and with the cost of living ever increasing, adding on things like a cgm, which for me would be an additional $200/month is just not an option. Want to make advancements?? Give us something EVERYONE can afford.
Are you eating the ADA diet? That is too high in carbohydrates. I was told to eat 130 grams total carbs per day! Insane! Read “Diabetes Solution” Book by Dr. Richard K. Bernstein, Diabetologist and T1D himself for 75 years; to be 88 in mid 2022. Watch on UA-cam his monthly T1D question answer free sessions. I use so much less insulin and have virtually no hypoglycemia. He recommendations keep blood sugars much more stable and less difficult to manage. Needing less insulin means less to buy. I eat 2 meals a day, sometimes 1, (no snacks) and intermittent fast the rest of the day. I use glucose tabs to micro-tweak blood glucose on occasion. Food cravings drop when blood sugars are normalized and stable. My vision improved, labs are better, no hospitalizations, less infections (none in last 7 years).
Yes, the costs are a huge problem. Sometimes, if you contact the device manufacturer they have a program to help acquire the device or help with the costs. Some states are better than others.
I invented an implantable continuous glucose monitor when I worked at a major implant manufacturer which would last at least a decade, but they decided to continue with their short-lived sensor that had to be explanted every couple years.

Dude - if you've got a 6.1 A1c, you're doing great. I struggle to get below 6.5. You're right on the borderline of "normal"!

If you question a food... eat it, then check your bloodsugar 2 hours after that meal, if your spiking above 180, never have that meal again!
Try carnivore diet or keto

5 years later a more expensive treatment will appear
There is $billions of reasons that pharma won't have a cure.

Type 2 diabetes is curable because it happens because of bad life style

Until everyone can get this treatment, CGM should be covered by insurance for every diabetic. I was told I was pre-diabetic but my insurance will not pay for CGM unless I am on insulin. I bought the CGM myself and by closely monitoring my sugar levels in real time, I have improved my A1C significantly enough to stay off of medication. Now I only use a CGM once every few months or so to make sure I am staying on track. So far so good. Information is power. Why insurance companies won’t pay to keep people off more expensive life altering drugs is beyond my comprehension.
Type 2 is avoidable and curable. You dont need print money to help people that dont know how to help themselves.
Smart !!!!
For type 2 diabetes (T2D, I highly encourage you to watch the UA-cam channel Beat Diabetes. The man has had T2D for many years. He uses just a glucose meter and testing how high body reacts to various carbohydrate foods.
Also, I encourage you to read:
"The Obesity Code" and "The Diabetes Code" both by Jason Fung, MD
"Why We Get Sick" by Benjamin Bikman, PhD.

I hate diabetes. Even with insulin i feel like i can’t eat anything. Always hungry always trying to ignore the hunger. .

I had a friend in Calgary who about 20 years ago had a pancreas implant of beta cells into his defunct pancreas (like me he was a type 1 diabetic). He was doing really well for about a year and was relieved that he was having a "normal" life. It was the anti rejection drugs which did him in near the end of his life. After 40 years I am staying on insulin with the huge help of my cgm device.

I can still remember when my youngest son who is now 31 was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 20. came home from a mission trip with all the well known symptoms. the scary part was he was enrolled at a college some distance away and classes started a week from his diagnoses. I did have a talk with him about he could make this easy or hard and to take good care of himself. he found a dr and an endocrinologist and had regular appointments. he has done an amazing job taking care of himself. he now has his blood sugar levels on his phone and a pump.
my fear isn't that they will never find a cure.. its that they will find it and charge either exorbitant amounts of money for it or patent and shelve it and then hold onto the patent forever.
unfortunately you may be right a lot
Stay positive. The power of suggestion exists terribly to bleed insurance companies. Apply for the trial.
Diabetes was cured 200 years ago by Dr. Salsbury.

My mom has type two diabetes and thank god for Medicare for paying for my mom pills

This was in the early 1980's.
look at vaccination rates correlated with T1D the graph is on the same plane ----- 200x more likely to get t1d then in venezuela? - low vaccine rates = low T1D occurrence not saying its right or wrong and its not conspiracy its fact our sons T1D for last 7 years its an awful disease 1 wrong dose away from the hospital every day
Before 1921, all Type 1 Diabetics would die before they could have children.
It is not common but does affect a proportion of the population.

I am a T-1 and while the advancement sounds exciting with great results thus far, I still don’t think it will happen in this decade.
The others who replied to your post on this are on the right track. Type II much different than type I. People tend to over complicate and over medicate while simple lifestyle changes can improve and reverse many of the consequences of a "modern industrialized society" I would suggest you read Why We Get Sick by Ben Bikman,PHD and watch many of his videos also. He is one of the best metabolic researchers out there and you will find a whole network of other doctors who are figuring out the root causes of many of the conditions we suffer from. Even with the bare necessities for living with diabetes, my costs exceed $200 a month and with the cost of living ever increasing, adding on things like a cgm, which for me would be an additional $200/month is just not an option.
