I doubt that you'll get any gronk comments mate - anyone who's done this before will probably feel your pain. It's a great start and the blow-holes are easily fixed.
Awesome bag of tools - even the bag is cool! Those pliers are tucking pliers, for shrinking steel edges and creating compound curves. The intertubes will give you a better idea. Trev's blog did a video using them (I made my own set after watching his video!).

    Hi There!
I rarely comment on UA-cam videos, but just wanted to say well done for putting yourself out there and learning to weld on camera. The naysayers probably live in their mums basement, and wouldn't have a clue how to weld themselves. Most people will be watching and thinking "Shit, I wonder if I could do that myself, probably not". I watch most of your video's , and cant wait to see how the car ends up. Goodluck, keep chipping away, and don't beat yourself up if it takes time to perfect the welding.

Thanks mate, that's a really nice thing to say, I appreciate it! I'll keep plugging away at it, and the satisfaction at the end of the day having built the car myself will be immense, even if it is a little rough in places :) Thanks for watching :)

Good to see you're getting on with it. All the gear you have there looks more than capable to do that your have on this project. As do you. I can't give you any pro welding tips cause I've been a bodger for more than 1/2 a century..But here's some stuff that I've learned the hard way......
On thinner steel don't try and do a run weld. Just do a series of spot welds.. But it looks like your already getting it.
When you leave the shed, check the gas bottle valve is closed. I wouldn't like to count the times I've done 5 mins of welding on a new bottle only to come back the next day to find an empty bottle.
When your welding, and it's hot ( weather ) don't run a fan directly at your self, cause it'll blow your gas away. It took me a while to figure out that.
Go for strong weld, rather than a good looking weld, grinders with flap discs are easy to use.
Sometimes the welding wire is crap and out of shape. It'll get caught, /slide on the feed rollers. Grab the wire on the end of the gun with a pair of pliers and pull while you have the trigger on. Run about 2 meters of wire out the gun ( until you see the crap bit come out ) then snip it of.
You hear a lot of sheet metal welders talking about copper paddles, so if you have a blow through you can hold the paddle behind the hole and fill it. The easiest way to get a copper paddle it to go to the hard ware shop and buy a meter or so of copper pipe. cut it to what ever length you want the paddle to be, smack the end flat with a hammer.... copper paddle.....
I've started buying my gas at Bunnings cause I can get it at 5.30 on a Sunday evening... Have fun....

First off, fantastic videos! I've only watched the AW11 vids so far, but consider me a subscriber! You've got guts of steel to learn how to weld in a video. I picked up welding about 4 years ago and absolutely love the skillset. A helpful video I watched to learn welding was one in which all bad elements were tested intentionally to see what would happen (i.e. not connecting ground, jacking up the wire feed speed, shutting off gas, etc). For whatever reason, I couldn't learn from videos of people telling me how TO do it, but rather learned the basics very quickly from how NOT to do it. May be something to try out on a rainy day to give yourself some practice.
Second, I have an 86 MR2 N/A that I'm making into a dedicated time attack track car with a 3S-GTE from the MK2 MR2 Turbo. I've owned a few MK1s and MK2s over the years including my current 88 Supercharged model. They're fun as hell and even more rewarding when you take the time you're taking to do it up right and enjoy the process. Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing the progress as we're at a similar step in our project AW11s. Cheers!

Thanks legend! Yeah the welding is tough but I'm getting there, just heaps to do!
I'm so pumped to drive this thing, everyone only has good things to say about them :)
I'm a fan of the 3sgte, I've owned two st185 gt4s with those engines and they were great cars I miss them, absolutely rock solid.
Your time attack car sounds awesome, where abouts are you located?

@@TheNuggetProject I'm across the pond in the US. I built the 3S that I'm using in my AW11 back in 2015 for an SW20 project. The buddy I built it with wound up with the wrong crowd and is now a meth head. I last touched the SW20 in 2016. As a 2023 new year's resolution, I told myself it had to go. I'd keep the engine and LSD tranny, but the roller had to go. Rust bucket was a nice way to put it. That thing was rotted from bumper to bumper. Almost every hole had sheared bolts. Called up a local MR2 guru to offload it for cheap and he instead offered up the 1986 for a trade. Very quickly, I was taken back to my dreams of owning a MK1.5 and since I had a newly built 3S-GTE (still hasn't been turned over and only has assembly lube from 2015 in it), I was stoked to get the project started. In a way, it's a continuation of the SW20 project from 2014, but this time, just me, myself, and I. I'm pumped and driven to get this thing going. Don't have much money or time with a growing family and all, but I'm making it happen one bolt at a time. Ain't nothing stopping the time attack train. :) Goal is 2250 lbs (just over 1000 kg) in full race prep with cage and factory fuel tank and 400whp from the fully built 3S. Sold a motorcycle to get a brand new Garrett turbo for it, so I know the engine can do it, I just gotta get the weight down. Roll cage is next on my agenda. Never been on track, so that'll be completely foreign territory to me. Your videos with your race car will help, I'm sure of it! Cheers!

Going through a similar but smaller project on my Volvo V70. I have a little MIG experience but I’m learning a lot patching up the rust holes on that body. The only way to get better is to practice and that’s what I’m telling myself about these Volvo patches. Great work on the MR2!

I love the V70, great car, I use my wife's D5 polestar tuned xc60 to tow the race car and its rad, highly underated cars.
And you're right, I stared at it for ages but the only way to learn is just to do it! Good luck mate, we're in the same boat!

Mate, I don't envy you. You've certainly taken on a long term project. I like you had to learn how to weld on my early JDM car. The metal is so thin you could spit through it. But, 2 1/2 yrs on I've finished and am quite pleased with the outcome. In your journey there will be times where its hard to continue, so just take a break, maybe have a race in the Excel and then get back to it. The end result will be worthwhile.

Hope you get to race!! by the way, I use pieces of cardboard to protect the radiator when installing it. It might be worth replacing the whole harness that wiring is old and susceptible to more issues along with corrosion

Oooh, project binky time! Make a bracket that holds the bracket you're going to cut off. Whatever they call it, a reverse bracket that goes off the other nuts around it. When you're putting it back together it should line up perfect first time you refit the dash & save a bit of time.

that dash brace always has that brown very light surface rust. I'd just leave it alone to save time. it will be completely hidden and won't compromise anything.

    • @TheNuggetProject
      @TheNuggetProject  9 місяців тому

Yeah i know, but i don't like it, every car i've pulled the dash out of i've taken the time to clean up and give it a spray, this whole thing will take ages anyway, whats another 20 mins :)
