I love watching interviews like this where the performer gives insight into their role and talks about the work that they performed in, the director, the original author...
Most performers who do this are either method veterans like Bale in this film, or maybe an indie performer :/ too many interviews today don't delve into the background of a film or a work, and it's just about promotion and fan-squeeing over some pretty person :(
Christian Bale is SO eloquent here. He reminds me of when Faye Dunaway did interviews for movies like Chinatown, The Network or Mother Dearest, or any of Michael Caine's old interviews. It shows just how much respect he had for the role; how much research he had done; how much he paid attention to the director's efforts and the writer's intentions. There is a lot here even for non-actors to learn from! And as the Russian saying goes, "a person with a clear head also speaks clearly." That is very true here. Too many performers today have very poor improv abilities and cannot tell a coherent thought, but then again their fans stan them like they can do no wrong and say things like "wow, this guy is such a philosopher! He said that acting takes a lot of effort, wow what a genius!" sigh.

@@liquidsnake6879 the intention of the “male violence” is to make you think about how Bateman and his colleagues treat/think about women as objects just about every time they interact/talk about women, this is reflected by Bateman literally treating women as objects for either sex or torture because it personally gratifies him and he’s insane. Sexism does effect the way we see and treat people, it’s true there are female serial killers but less common and also they aren’t usually killing for the same sexual gratification we see Bateman kill for. Silly to focus on a whatabout-ism when the movie just wouldn’t work and have the same context with a female lead, pry wouldn’t be as popular either. I agree with your first paragraph tho, Hollywood’s full of hypocrisy, criticizing the sole pursuit of wealth at all cost and appearing to be cultured without actually caring for others is definitely the point of American psycho and it could easily be restructured to be a criticism of Hollywood.

He lives in the American Gardens building on West 81st street. His name is Patrick Bateman. He’s 27 years old. He believes in taking care himself, and a balanced diet and a rigorous exercise routine. In the morning, if his face is a little puffy, he’ll put on an ice pack while doing his stomach crunches. He can do a thousand now. After he removes the ice pack, he uses a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower, he uses a water activated gel cleanser. Then a honey almond body scrub. And on the face, an exfoliating gel scrub. Then he applies an herb mint facial mask, which he leaves on for 10 minutes while he prepares the rest of his routine. He always use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion. There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real him. Only an entity, something illusory. And though he can hide his cold gaze, and you can shake his hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense your life styles are probably comparable, he simply is not there.

Christian proved with this role that he is one of the most intelligent actors out there. The fact that the rest of the cast (except Willem Defoe, who said from the get-go Bale is a genius as Bateman) thought at first that he does it wrong, shows they actually didn't understand any of it, how to do great satire like this. Christian explains it brilliantly right here, in this interview: 'psychology of him was interesting because it was turning on its head all of the basic rules of acting, that you'd be firstly completely unselfconscious, and Bateman is completely self-conscious (...) it didn't matter, Bateman is a performance, so normally you have to disguise the performance with this, it didn't matter that I've revealed a performance, it was sort of an acting teacher's nightmare'.
This right here is what the cast thought at first, 'acting nightmare', what the hell he is doing, etc. They simply didn't get this is exactly the way you play an alien like Bateman & satire. And they changed their minds after they saw the whole movie, so history proved Christian right. He was simply always one step ahead and ahead of the time. Genius.

I think it was more about the suit and physicality of the two 😂. Any similarities for me were really superficial. Bateman was playing a role to try to fit in with his peers because he was so different on the inside - his psyche. Bruce’s eccentric billionaire playboy persona was playing a role to stand out among his peers- the trust fund brigade as Rachel called them. He purposely courted attention being over the top in every way possible- hiding in plain sight.
You said hints so I’m not necessarily disagreeing with you but I actually saw Begins before I saw American Psycho 😀. Maybe that’s why I feel like there was a big difference between the characters. I saw none of Bruce Wayne ‘s Playboy persona in Patrick Bateman when I watched AP. Patrick was too uneasy in his own skin which is exactly what bale was going for I think. But the director just showed everybody buying the performance.

You are speaking such facts. I believe to this day that he was deliberately provoked. He was under so much pressure that it would have been easy to push him over the edge.
July heat in Albuquerque NM, tdk premiers and press tours worldwide at same time, dealing with aftermath of Ledger’s death - they were friends. And the verbal assault charge brought by his own Mother and sister same night as London premier of TDK happened in July too. Bad time frame lots of pressure.
There were lots of obstacles to get that movie made. They were looking for Bale to reboot the terminator franchise the way he had rebooted the Batman franchise. They said they would bring on the Nolan team to help with the script etc but it didn’t happen.
The entire incident was shady. They were scared Bale would walk and they wanted insurance in case he did. Then lo and behold he goes off one day and they happen to catch it on tape. Very convenient. 😒
They save the tape even tho useless for the movie snd voila they have their insurance. The insurance company somehow let it get leaked and 13 years later you still have people condemning him.
But honestly, people in the industry pretty much said that moving around the set to tweak lights after action is called is a no no unless previously arranged with the actors in the scene because it’s distracting.
Bale didn’t agree with doing that and in fact had asked the dp NOT to do it again. So when he does it again it’s in total disregard and disrespect to a request not to have ones work hindered.
Director McG was sleep at the wheel but again I think he colluded to wind Bale up and get it on tape. Otherwise there’s no reason why the tape survived. Plus he apologized the day it happened and again when tape got leaked. Somebody got paid for that while Bale got ripped to shreds for four minutes of yelling and using the f word.
To some that word doesn’t even have the original meaning. To Bale it was clearly just the way he talks. It had no weight behind it precisely because he kept saying it.
So yes I agree with you that the dp was at fault plus he made it worse “ apologizing” but in the next breath saying he didn’t trash (hinder) the shooting of the scene.
If you listen a little closer it really starts to sound staged and people are smiling / laughing in a condescending way while they ask Bale to calm down but no one in authority ever once says to the DP “Hey Shane you can’t be moving around after action is called anymore. You’re on notice now that it’s causing a problem.” That doesn’t happen.
And I will bet you anything that if there was video footage and we could see everyone’s body language and facial expressions it would paint a different picture. I’d almost bet my house that the DP did something nonverbal like turn his back or be otherwise dismissive that made Bale escalate instead of calm down. Especially if the whole thing was a set up.

    • @babobereta

That incident was so obviously staged for the promotion of the movie, even Michael Caine said it when he was asked about it in an interview. That audio tape (without any video) was released just before the movie was released in cinemas (how convenient and not at all suspicious) and it is so believable because it plays right into this image that Christian Bale has of being this superserious ultraprofessional methodic actor who is a perfectionist and does not want anything or anyone to mess with his work. All of you obviously bought it very easily so it worked really nice. I would just like to know was he paid extra for that promotional work?

    • @nikkinewbie6014
      @nikkinewbie6014 Рік тому +2

@@babobereta I saw that interview with Michael Caine as well. He wasn’t suggesting Bale had a hand in the tape being leaked at all. He was insinuating that the “powers that be” were behind the tape being leaked and the timing of it. He never meant to imply Bale had staged anything. I’m fact he defended Bale’s character by saying it wasn’t like him and that he himself had done far worse difference being it wasn’t preserved on tape and leaked.
I have a hard time believing any professional actor would purposely risk that kind of foreseeable backlash and ongoing damage to their brand and reputation in order to promote one project.
Especially in a profession in which the public’s perception of you can and does affect your marketability long term. That would have been very short term, desperate thinking on Bale’s part to go along with that kind of ruse.
Coming off the meteoric success of The Dark Knight and being at the pinnacle of his career at the time this tape was released, Bale simply would not have felt compelled to risk sacrificing his brand that way.
Especially since he was already doing damage control about the verbal assault incident with his mother and sister which happened the same month that the rant actually happened in July of the prior year. When TDK was premiering everywhere and racking up record breaking box office receipts.
You still have people thirteen years later saying they won’t go see a movie he’s in to this day because of the rant. And what person in their right mind would risk having that kind of ass out display be on the internet until forever?
Bale is not stupid and all of the bad press and public backlash and public humiliation he suffered despite all the apologies he made would have been totally foreseeable. What about his wife and daughter and any future kids he would have? You think he would have wanted them to have to deal with that shit? Really??
I wouldn’t put it past the business side of the production to set up Bale up tho. Either to have leverage over him or to have it for insurance policy for the movie.
Maybe they didn’t set it up but just took advantage. Either way I don’t think even they would have leaked the tape. Because again it would have been too much a risk that movie goers would not want to reward such bad behavior and could boycott instead.
I don’t believe even the DP would have participated in such a ruse if he knew the tape would be leaked because his light tweaking after action called goes against the industry norm. So even though he was the “victim” per se he wasn’t totally blameless and he comes off looking like someone who doesn’t know how to navigate a set when making a movie. Not good for his career either. But he still might have thinking about the sympathy he could and did get.
So if you’re right, who else besides the DP and Bale were in on it 🙄? The Director of course right? How about Bryce Dallas Howard? Would she engage in that kind of shit? She defended him afterward the tape was leaked but called her Dad (actor Director Ron Howard) right after it happened
What about the crew members who came forward and said the DP had it coming because of how he had routinely been treating people while the movie was being made. Was that all made up too to help sell the lie?
It’s far more likely that either someone tried to blackmail Bale personally and he wouldn’t pay up refusing to be blackmailed. That would explain why the tape was released so close to the movie release date - for maximum effect and as the consequence for not being paid out.
If not blackmail then maybe the plan really was “only” taking it to TMZ to get money that way. To me, this always felt like it was someone who leaked the tape for money.
Certainly never once believed it was some pathetic attempt on Bale’s part to “promote” the movie. How does faking an isolated incident of what would surely be considered very bad behavior on set of the lead actor not have better than a 50% chance of backfiring by making people condemn Bale wholeheartedly and not go to the movie to make a statement “on principle” 🙄😒. Plenty of that happened I’m sure.
Anybody in the business of making movies (the people who stood to make money on this movie based on box office performance ) would have known better than to try to “work” people that way. Too risky.
Meanwhile any individual person who could have made and undoubtedly DID make some money selling the tape would not have cared about the risk to the movie nor the damage to Bale personally.
Bale knows as much as any actor that an actor’s career can survive one or even several bad movies. But if you get labeled as being difficult or worse violent with others on set in Hollywood you’re risking said career.
Suggesting Bale got “paid anything extra to stage” the incident that would foreseeably dog him to his grave kind of argues against itself. The idea he would willingly shoot himself in the foot that way is highly unlikely. That some schmuck got a few thousand dollars richer thanks to a check from TMZ for the audio much to Bale’s detriment - is exactly what happened.

True story: the character Patrick Bateman played by Christian Bale was based on Christian Bale's performance after he flipped out on one of the crew members(Paul Allen) for walking around in the background during filming on the set of Terminator salvation.
That version of Christian Bale was sent back in time to terminate Allen and thus became the serial killer known as Patrick Bateman.
A lot of people don't know that the character Patrick Bateman is a real person because he's christian bale from the future.
    It all makes perfect sense.
