I haven't played any RPG's for over 20 years and really needed some training. I am going to run a game with my daughter and a few friends. Ages 17 to 50+. This was a great help! Can't wait to watch the rest of your videos. Thank you!
Thanks for the video, me and a group of friends wanted to play and I ended up reading the entire beginners guide and your video will really help me explain to them how to make a character
wow, this old video is way better at explaining than newer ones. they gloss over stats equipment, and stuff like that. this video is easy to follow and truly helps build your most likely first character just like me
I downloaded this book not to long ago and I wasn’t sure that the characters were right thanks for reassuring me and explaining tweaks I will need to fix.

OMG, when you rolled the die for race, I was SO happy!!! I tried to make a character with that race and class all by myself yesterday (I'm a total beginner) and now I can see if I did it right! Thanks! *continues watching*
Please! Beginners! Choosing your Race, class and gender (equipment too of course) is one of the earliest pleasures in beginning D&D. I know this video is about explaining the system as presented, but given that your character is the only gaming element that players have complete control of.... try and ask the Referee to let you choose. If you loved 'Mouse' in Ladyhawke or Bilbo in the Hobbit, you might relish playing a theif. LOTR might inspire you to be a hobbit or a dwarf. Or you might be a fan of Victorian romanticism - so elves or fey humans might be your thing. Great video! I think the Ability modifiers go in the larger box and the actual ability score goes in the small oval. That is how Wizards' pre-made sheets are shown. It's also nice to see the modifier value bigger since it is what we really need to see.
I have just recently become interested in checking D&D out.. so I have watched a good few videos around the same subject, and as helpful as those were at times, I gotta give you thumbs up for going more indepth around creating a character.
I found a few character sheets online for free. I had to do a bit of editing in word but it turned out well. I made a book and cut out the sheets that I printed. I made a "name" in photo shop and printed it out. I submerged some pages in left over coffee and it made the book look old. I added the name at the top and yea I have a super useful d&d book that I can write notes and record gameplay
Thanks a lot!! I haven't played before and when I tried alone to make a character I got lost on what numbers I shouls use and always questioning myself if I shouls consider certain modifiers, thanks to you I now know how to make a character and, through that, how to implement them on the game mecanics. Later today, since is 4 AM, I'll try this joke-character in a silly and simple story to try to learn more through experience. Once more, thank you very much, now I can go to sleep with a smile.
Thank you for the video. I played D&D back during 2nd edition rules so this was a great help. My son wants to play so I am going to attempt to DM a few stand-alone scenarios for him.

I made 2 practice characters. A halfling fighter who was pretty good. And then I tried to use the wiki to make a more "unusual" character and made a kenku plague doctor. Idk if I just rolled really well or if I calculated something wrong, but he was way too OP lol.

Today I a made a character sheet for 1 person from my D&D group.I watched your 'How to create a fighter' video . He explained very nicely , but there were just some things that I didn't understand, like : What do I write in the saving throws ? And if its numbers then how do I get them? Do i roll a dice? If so which one ? A d10? A d4? A d20? And also , where do I find out what my : 'attack and spellcasting' is in the rulebook? And I can't seem to find and print the character sheet Nate's using in the video. I only found the adventurers league character sheet , and I don't think thats the right one . I also dont understand the 'xp' on the top right of the character sheet? How do you gain them ? Where do you gain it? How does the DM know the amount of xp he should give? And what is this 'inspiration' thing in the top left? What do I write? FACTION? WHAT IS THAT? DCI NUMBER?WHAT!? PROFICIENCY BONUS ?????!?!?!?!?! WHAT ? HA? CURRENT HIT POINTS? TEMPORARY HIT POINTS????!>>! >!!> IDEALS? BONDS?FLAWS? WHAT IS THIS : 'CP, SP, EP, GP, PP IN THE EQUIPMENT BOX ON THE BOTTOM RIGHT OF THE CHARACTER SHEET????????????????????????????????/
+Ethan O'Hara -- Two things I'd recommend. 1) Read the free basic rules PDF (link under 'outside resources' on this page - www.wasd20.net/resources/) or the Player's Handbook. 2) Sit down with a group and try playing. Ideally you can find a good DM who can teach you on the fly. If you want to read the rules first, great. But don't push yourself so hard to understand everything before you play. Just jump in. You'll get it.
+WASD20 I have read the free PDF rulebook , and I cant find a DM bc I live in Sarajevo and im the only dm in my group , I also wanted to ask ? how do I find a way to enjoy a campaign as being the DM
+Ethan O'Hara -- The Starter Set is really made for you if you have a way to get it. It'll have everything you need to get going and should answer most of your questions. It's meant to ease new groups into the hobby and will provide a lot of guidance for you as a new DM. The enjoyment in DMing comes from creating a world, a story, and controlling LOTS of fun characters. While I sometimes get a bit burned out from doing it too often, I really do enjoy it! It's not for everybody, but a lot of people love it.
Thanks for the video! It's been extremely useful. However, when following along, I noticed a mistake. You chose to roll for gold for gear, but took the gear from your background. The Handbook says if you're rolling for gold, you don't get to take the background gear
Great video! Really useful. Two things though. First: what happens to your skills if one of your ability modifiers is negative? Do some of your skills have a negative value? Second: I calculated the cost of your equipment, and it comes out at more than 160 gp: 50 + 50 + 25 + 12 + 25 = 162 gp, plus 1 sp for the club. 163 gp 1 sp with the bedroll. Is some of your equipment free, or at a reduced price, or what?
You are right. In the early days I was messing up on this. I should not have taken the default equipment from my background if I ALSO wanted to roll for gold. You can a) take the standard equipment from your class and background, or b) roll for gold and buy stuff yourself.
WASD20 LoL thanks! or at the least-- the WOTC star wars rpg, I heard they are sort of identical, except you replace a sword with ligthsaber, and bows iwth guns/blasters..and such :) Some of the best tutorials on YT, keep it up!
Thanks for this video man, you did an awesome job. I'm about to re-start playing rpg's with my friends and we want to give DnD a chance again(the alternative was Pathfinder). I heard all the veterans are loving this 5th edition because it takes the nostalgia from the famous red box plus the "core" mechanics of 3.5(removing the mechanical features) plus some goods of Pathfinder and combine them all making the rules more slim and role-playing friendly giving the DM more liberty too...can you confirm that? I also love the fact WOTC is giving the core rules and DM book for free along with the form-fillable PDF character sheets AND the online dice roller too(which all required the online subscription to their services back in the day) meaning you can literally start testing and playing too, even with few classes, at total cost of 0€. What do you think about this edition compared to others? We actually liked the 4th one too(after years of 3.5 which became a bit too heavy on rules and had some stupid stuff in it) so we're not over-critical(it actually made combat more fun!) but this time it really seems they made a "definitive" edition of DnD as 3.5 has been for years. Oh, and atop of that thanks for this video. This will help my newbie friends undesrtand character creation better and is helping myself too making it faster and with the proper order of things(except one, why didn't you roll stats like immediately to add bonuses on later? Just curious, I usually go for the 4d6 per stat discarding the lowest result) reading my mind for 5thed character creation!
Cool man. I'm glad you found it helpful. I can confirm that what you've heard about 5E is true. I don't have a ton of experience with other RPGs (just Pathfinder and a couple others) but I find this simpler than Pathfinder, more encouraging of role play for newcomers, more empowering for the DM to make the game his/her own and make calls instead of having a rule for everything, etc. I love 5E. And yes, try out the free stuff first. It's a really nice gift from WOTC :) When you're ready to start buying stuff I also made a buyer's guide, so check that out too - ua-cam.com/video/QDW2PpjjGA8/v-deo.html In terms of the order - I'm not quite sure what you mean. Are you asking why I didn't roll for stats right away so I could apply bonuses as I go? I think I just followed the order from the instructions on this one, though in my several other character creation videos you can see me tweaking the order quite a bit. ua-cam.com/play/PLq8DIL0O-i-mbojnENKP0lg9vPKvZwHMZ.html Sometimes its a bit random and I just forget something and have to go back and do it later. I have trouble following directions and can be a bit ADD. :) Anyway - good luck to you and your friends. I love hearing about new players getting started or experienced gamers coming back to it! Have fun!
Thanks for the in-depth reply and yes, that was my question about stats rolls. That being said I'll check the Buyer's guide right now, hopefully I'll get started with my friend's new campaign to test 5th ed. next saturday! :)
kron koroxian Oh no! Keep procrastinating! :D But seriously if you're new to D&D this is not the most thrilling stuff. Try this one - ua-cam.com/video/jT3FRzEJDp8/v-deo.html
For someone who has no experience with D&D - me - this was confusing most of the way through. That is frustrating as this is something I am trying to get my head around because I have been invited to play and really want to learn it. Not a video for a brand new beginner who knows nothing about the game.
Sorry to hear that! This was my first one, and I'd like to think I've gotten better at explaining the process. But it IS quite complex and daunting for newcomers. Was for me at least. My first Pathfinder character took me about 3 or 4 hours and lots of visits to online forums to ask questions. You might try this more recent video: ua-cam.com/video/aa5a3HfFOMc/v-deo.html Or check out my website: www.wasd20.net/5th-edition-character-creation-step-by-step-tutorial-for-beginners/ There's also nothing wrong with using a pre-generated character when you are new. Sometimes character creation makes more sense after you've played the game a bit.
Hey Nate, I have a question. Though I do find this EXTREMELY helpful as I've never played before, in making my character I've run into a bit of a predicament. With the "Fighting Style" feature, would I be able to use "Dueling" if I had a sword and a shield? Or would the shield count as a weapon and negate the +2 bonus? I'm sorry if it seems like a bit of a stupid question to consider a shield as a weapon, but only because the feature specifies that I would have no other weapons out.
Shadow Garland X Hmm. The rules seem to say it's only weapons, and a shield is not a weapon, so I'd go for it. I'm almost positive you would still get the +2 bonus with a weapon in one hand and a shield in the other.
Where did you get that book? I have second edition D&D and can't find a book like that. If you could tell me where I could find one via internet or if I have one that would be amazing.
What is a mountain dwarf? can you be a grumpy mountain dwarf? a happy mountain dwarf? a sneezy mountain dwarf? a sleepy mountain dwarf? a dopey mountain dwarf?
At 19:45 when calculating your Hit Points, I was confused as to why you also added your Dex. Modifier. I thought you only added your constitution modifier? Please explain what I missed.

Great video, but you did skip something so i am a bit lost. But were can i buy/get the Basic rules that you are reading from? You said it was free and i am wondreing how to get it. ;)
i have played past editions and have always liked playing ambidextrous unarmed fighters. even had a 3.0 character my dm retired on me after it got too powerful from using the oriental adventure book. any how i had a chance to skim for a few minutes a while back and felt there was a lot of data for the new edition and am finally thinking about a second look. i was wondering does this edition allow for an ambidextrous unarmed fighter or is thay limited to monks?
It's interesting that this old video helped me more that the ''new'' ones. I'm glad I found it as a new player/DM. Thumbs up for that, Nate.

Some of the best tutorials on YT, keep it up!
Hello Nate!
The moths are love, the moths are lifes
I watched the gravity falls version of this game and thats what got me into it
I wanna make a fighter elf
It's a really nice gift from WOTC :)
When you're ready to start buying stuff I also made a buyer's guide, so check that out too - ua-cam.com/video/QDW2PpjjGA8/v-deo.html
In terms of the order - I'm not quite sure what you mean. Are you asking why I didn't roll for stats right away so I could apply bonuses as I go? I think I just followed the order from the instructions on this one, though in my several other character creation videos you can see me tweaking the order quite a bit. ua-cam.com/play/PLq8DIL0O-i-mbojnENKP0lg9vPKvZwHMZ.html
Sometimes its a bit random and I just forget something and have to go back and do it later.
I'll stick to my warhammer, tried procrastinating to this but a minute in I was back to doing my practice biology paper XD
kron koroxian Oh no! Keep procrastinating! :D But seriously if you're new to D&D this is not the most thrilling stuff. Try this one - ua-cam.com/video/jT3FRzEJDp8/v-deo.html
WASD20 ooh next gen! XD no offense by the way with the first comment ;)
None taken, man. Character creation is not exactly high entertainment. ;)

your local library should print for 5 to 25 cents a page!
how about the skills like the one where you get -5 on your attack roll but +10 on damage?
Do skills rely on your special? Like if I have one strength do I have one athletic point
Yes, sort of. The skill bonuses come directly from your ability score modifiers.
@@WASD20 ok thank you
For someone who has no experience with D&D - me - this was confusing most of the way through.
You might try this more recent video: ua-cam.com/video/aa5a3HfFOMc/v-deo.html

There's also nothing wrong with using a pre-generated character when you are new.
Ah, alright. Thanks! ^^
David Bazan
Where did you get that book? I have second edition D&D and can't find a book like that. If you could tell me where I could find one via internet or if I have one that would be amazing.
Link in the description.
thx
I don't understand how your crossbow damage gets a plus 2 when your dex is plus 3?
+Brody Tuggle That was an error. I corrected some of it at 25:05 but I forgot to change the crossbow damage. Should be +3. Sorry for the confusion :)
+WASD20 ok thank you, I jumped the gun
We didn't know that you need to use max hit die for first level so some characters end up with 3 health points...
Ha! Bummer! That could make for a quick game.
What is a mountain dwarf? can you be a grumpy mountain dwarf? a happy mountain dwarf? a sneezy mountain dwarf? a sleepy mountain dwarf? a dopey mountain dwarf?
a white as snow mountain dwarf?
+what does DC stand for? no.
difficulty class - i.e. how difficult a given task is (how high you would need to roll).
+WASD20 lol thats the dudes name XD
At 19:45 when calculating your Hit Points, I was confused as to why you also added your Dex. Modifier. I thought you only added your constitution modifier? Please explain what I missed.
+Ruben Castro That was one of a few errors in this one. I corrected it with an annotation, but if you are watching on mobile those don't show up. :)
+WASD20 Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I just recently started up a campaign as DM and had to shake off a lot of dust and catch up on the current rules. Really appreciate your video and response and you got yourself a subscriber.
Cool, thanks! Check out my cleric video for a more accurate and generally clearer look at the process of character creation.
This is my first one, and they slowly got better over time. :)
Cleric: ua-cam.com/video/aa5a3HfFOMc/v-deo.html
I will definitely check it out! I was wondering if you have any videos explaining advantage/disadvantage and how this works when using a Rogue's Sneak Attack? Having some confusion on this topic. Thanks!
Great video, but you did skip something so i am a bit lost. But were can i buy/get the Basic rules that you are reading from? You said it was free and i am wondreing how to get it. ;)
I'm glad you found it helpful. Life tip: Use the googles! :) "Dungeons & Dragons Basic rules".
Why did dexterity modify your hitpoints?
Shouldn't the current hit points be 10+CON=14 instead of 16?
You are correct! I addressed that in an annotation, but if you are watching on mobile you don't see those.
i hade a player with a +5 modifer at level 1
do u really have to role to choose ur race? im very new to dnd
Definitely not. Very few people do. Most people choose race and class themselves or in discussion with a group.
i have played past editions and have always liked playing ambidextrous unarmed fighters. even had a 3.0 character my dm retired on me after it got too powerful from using the oriental adventure book. any how i had a chance to skim for a few minutes a while back and felt there was a lot of data for the new edition and am finally thinking about a second look. i was wondering does this edition allow for an ambidextrous unarmed fighter or is thay limited to monks?
when making a high elf character, do you add elf traits to the high elf traits?
Professor 8-Bit Yes. You take the race AND sub-race traits.
WASD20 thanks.
WASD20 i'm sorry to ask again, but what does proficiency mean, as in skill wise?
Professor 8-Bit ua-cam.com/video/aa5a3HfFOMc/v-deo.htmlm20s Check out this explanation :)
can you do a character sheet for 3.5? i would really love that.
Probably won't be doing any other editions. I don't have any of the rulebooks for 3.5.
Dang... okay
