+Bobby Lugo If anything 1876 and 1888 were the result of voter suppression and Republicans were not a pv majority party without the help of black voters. Lincoln won a majority in all but three of his states but only got 39% nationwide. Theoretically Lincoln could have lost 61 to 39 to a single candidate and still won the EC. Grant for instance only won in 1868 because of black support. With the exception of 1880, Republicans lost the pv in every election between 1872 and 1896. This only changed in 1896 bc Bryan alienated a lot of Germans both Catholic and Lutheran and solidified the North for the Republicans. The collapse of the Bourbons who were blamed for the panic of 1893, solidified this paradigm and the GOP won the pv in every election through 1928 except 1916 when it was razor thin. The two Republicans combined out voted Wilson in 1912. Demographics usually decide election patterns.

Actually, since more Americans luved in rural America till the 1920 Census, various laws as to rural farming helped for example if you planted a crop you were entilted to it even if the farm was forclosed or you were evicted for non payment of rent. Other similar rules also applied, picking up loose wood was also permitted. No trespassing laws existed but was only a civil action, i r. Liable for damage you did no criminal charges or fines. Criminal trespass only came into the law in the 1890s as an anti union law to keep union organisers out of mines and factories. Breaking and entry was a crime but crossing someone's field was not. Even sleeping in an unlocked barn was not a crime. Eating the food in the barn was a crime but most cases resolved on the farm without any criminal charges. Thus you had laws to prevent starvation but geared for rural America. By the 1930s, those laws were no longer effective given the passage of Criminal Trespassing laws and that most people lived in urban areas by the 1930s.

Hayes ended up prevailing by a single electoral vote. The only way the election could have been closer is if it was tied and thrown into the House of Representatives. Many Democrats called him Rutherfraud for the next 4 years.
The video implies that the Electoral Commission was all about partisanship, but I do not think that is fair. They decided that Congress would accept the result as transmitted to it by the executive authority of each state. This is legally correct and nowadays it is federal law. This was an issue at the time because in Florida the state supreme court tried to overrule the governor.
The most seriously disputed vote was that of Florida. Here is Justice William Strong, one of the commissioners: "My conclusions, then, are that neither Congress nor this commission has authority under the Constitution to recanvass the vote of Florida for state electors; that the first determination of the State canvassing-board was conclusive until it was reversed by state authority; that while it remained unreversed it conferred upon the persons declared by it to have been chosen electors rightful authority to cast the vote of the State; and that the act that those electors were appointed to do having been done, it was not in the power even of the State afterward to undo the act and call in question ." This quote is cited with approval by William Rehnquist in his book on the 1876 election.

1 of 5 in which the winner did not win at least a plurality of the popular vote - 1824 (John Quincy Adams), 1876 (Hayes), 1888 (Benjamin Harrison), 2000 (G.W. Bush), and 2016 (Trump). Interestingly, all three presidents who had descended from former presidents fell into this category. John Quincy Adams was the son of John Adams, Benjamin Harrison was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, and George W. Bush was the son of George H.W. Bush (who was known simply as George Bush during his Presidency). George W. Bush broke the trend by earning re-election over a different opponent in 2004.

The Greenback party candidate Peter Cooper was a man ahead of his time. Aside his contributions to educating the working class, he created a building with an elevator shaft 4 years before elevators for people were invented.
Thanks, need this put on repeat for a class..... you get an 'A' in my book sir !!
Glad it helps! Thanks for watching :)
"It was one of four elections in which the 'dude' who won the plurality, or most votes, did not win the election." Actually, you can now edit this particularly informative political & historical video segment to state: - It was NOW one of FIVE (5) elections in which the 'person' who won the plurality - or most votes - did not win the election. 2016 is now in the books.
What a mess this election was, kind of makes the controversy over the 2000 election seem tame by comparison
Compared to this, 2000 was a pushing and shoving match.
The South would be a much better place had the military never pulled out, but TBH I just don’t see the continuing presence viable as once a Democrat is elected they would definitely pull them out to make their rich white Southern supporters happy.
This election marked the beginning of a 16 year period in which the presidential elections were tightly contested.
It's interesting how the smear campaigning goes back hundreds of year. So petty.
I really really despise the Electoral College because of stuff like this
Hayes ended up prevailing by a single electoral vote. The only way the election could have been closer is if it was tied and thrown into the House of Representatives. Many Democrats called him Rutherfraud for the next 4 years.
I honestly wish that the opposite side would make the losing side something happy if things hadn’t gone their way.
I hate it when people put music on their vidoes, and forget to adjust the volume--- so I can't hear the words.
Here is Justice William Strong, one of the commissioners: "My conclusions, then, are that neither Congress nor this commission has authority under the Constitution to recanvass the vote of Florida for state electors; that the first determination of the State canvassing-board was conclusive until it was reversed by state authority; that while it remained unreversed it conferred upon the persons declared by it to have been chosen electors rightful authority to cast the vote of the State; and that the act that those electors were appointed to do having been done, it was not in the power even of the State afterward to undo the act and call in question
." This quote is cited with approval by William Rehnquist in his book on the 1876 election.
In Paraguay, there is a Department (as they call Provinces) called Presidente (President) Hayes in honor of him, and the capital is called Villa (Villague) Hayes in 2018 it became the sister City to Fremont, Ohio home and burial site of President Hayes.
Well deserved win for me.
Well I prefer to think of the Compromise as the Great Betrayal of 1877
Why is it always Florida when it comes to election drama?
2:40 JESUS CHRIST I SPIT OUT MY FRUIT SNACK THAT BEARD
The Stereopticon of President Hayes has an excellent 3D effect to it
I wonder what would have happened if Tilden won.
The Chinese exclusion act would’ve had a much more negative impact and voting rights for blacks wouldn’t be as protected.
Peter Cooper, was older than James Buchanan, George Dallas, James Polk, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Henry Wilson, and John Breckinridge who all died before this election. He even outlived Garfield and Garfield was born in 1831
We know
It kind of sounds like 2020 a little bit.
Since this was made before the 2016 and 2020 elections a lot of the superlatives mentioned have been superseded.

Fact for the election: Second time a candidate lost the electoral vote but won the popular vote.
Rutherford Hayes looks like Grigori Rasputin.
Ayyyy first time my home state could participate!
Grant was about to win 1880 before he lost the national thingy
Imagine, what would of happened if by the end of the election, faithless elector trolls would make sure that both of the candidates won't get to the required 185 points :0!
MMMMMIIIIIISSSSTEEEEEERRRR BEEEAAAT 6000 WOOWOWOW
Sounds like, 'corrupt bargan'...in the words of Andrew Jackson.
Peter Cooper’s beard is fucking awesome!!
I actually live in Tilden's hometown never would have thought
love your channel - plz never have music w/ vocals in the background again. Thanks
I made this video a long time ago. Check out my newer videos. I've come a long way. 😉
Ted Cruz gave this election a shoutout 😮
1:44 "bourbon" "anti imperialist"...oh boi this one ain't confusing.
The bourbons of europe were very authoritarian in the ways of governance and the while line got skewed over by the french revolution
Much like the term Corporate Democrat today, that wasn’t a label that they adopted for themselves but was something they were branded with by their populist intra-party rivals to paint them as reactionaries.
sounds like history is repeating itself.
when people point fingers at black progress, start with this election.
I’m from the banks of Loch Lomond, and in my area the song that was played in this video is played at the end of every party. I’m wondering a song about Scotland is in a video about a US election?
What is the song?

People been questioning the electoral college for 200 years but still don’t change it. Cool.
Reminds me of 2020
This is 2020
@@domenstrmsek5625 2020 wasn’t this close
you should do one of these for a different country now that you’re up to date on the US

George W. Bush broke the trend by earning re-election over a different opponent in 2004.
they were right that Blaine wouldn't win in the general election years later. (btw this was said in 1876)
4:06 Don’t think I don’t see you Garfield!
Ngl I was looking for Garfield the cat at the timestamp you posted 😅
That is a good beard
Well hello there 2021ites...
I have never heard of the economy not being in trouble. LOL
I live near where William Wheeler was born and where he was buried.
So we had the smallest electoral vote margin in this election, and we have the smallest popular vote margin in the following election?!?
You can complain all you want about the fact that Tilden was the legitimate winner. But Hayes was obviously the better option even if he cheated to victory.
Oh boy the 2020 video gonna make this look nothing
