It is amazing that Hoover earned 58 percent in his first round but only 39 percent in his second round. That is a 19 point swing against him. In 1992, Bush had 37 percent as opposed to 53 percent, so a 16 point swing. In 1980, Carter won 41 percent compared to 50 percent in 1976, so 'only' a 9 point swing. I won't count 1976 since Ford wasn't the incumbent in 1972. 1912 was technically a 28 point swing against Taft but that is only because of the infamous split (although I do think Wilson would have won even without the split). In 1892 Harrison suffered a 5 point swing against him. So Hoover faced the worst case of voter abandonment out of any incumbent in a two way race in the history of this country. That is wild

Whether you are a socialist or not, I feel like it does the movement lot of good for regular folks to see that for quite a long time socialism wasn't exactly taboo as it is today. Well, the U.S. and especially Democrats have long been supporters of socialist programs as safeguards within a properly regulated capitalist economy (which is a good thing as long as you don't go too far with it and don't overburden the country with debt over it). However, capitalism is still the core of the U.S. economy.
While a fully socialist economy has never been popular in the U.S., there was significant support for it back then only because most Americans hadn't yet realized how terrible things had turned out in the Soviet Union where their socialist revolution had turned into Communism with a a fully-state controlled economy and leaders with absolute power to keep everything in control. Even if a dictatorship could somehow be avoided, a fully socialist economy just has far too many flaws to ever work well on such a large scale as the economy of an entire country.

I like Franklin Delano Roosevelt because he guide the USA through the roughest economic depression and also through the toughest world conflict ever exactly historically fought, The Great Depression and later World War 2. He had his New Deal polices that fixed the economic issues like homelessness, poverty, food & beverages, and family issues with organizations with the revolutionary abbreviations and some important stuff like FDIC. FHA, farm and rural programs, and also Social Security.

It was unlikely. The voters wanted "normalcy" after World War I, and Democrats were in the minority, confined to the Solid South. Besides, FDR ran as the Veep at age 38. Polio put him out of action during Republican dominance. It was then that the corporations took over again, which worked as long as there had been mass consumption with mass production. Since World War II ended, they've been at it again, now on the verge of a fascist takeover.
