    "Eva" defenitely comes to mind. Card was thought to be bargin bin filler that wouldnt work in most fairy decks, and then someone combined Drytrons with Heralds and it became a centerpiece in format warping stun decks.

      @Homcomru 7 місяців тому +25

      Add to that Thunder of Ruler than can also be used with drytron and Amorphactor dracoverlord for a good old complete turn skip (an unintended one at that since Konami probably never thought cards skipping Main 1 and battle would be used together for a full turn skip).
      Funny thing too: Djinn releaser of rituals doesn’t even work well with drytron.

    Surprised no one brought up Solemn Judgement. People splept on it when released cause paying half your life points was deemed too steep a cost, but then everyone realized that oh crap this thing is fire.

    • @honeyham6788
      @honeyham6788 7 місяців тому +28

      the thing is, it's not really "slept on" when it's just not very good in the format it's printed in. MST and Dust Tornado are way better at stopping battle traps as well as Called By. The only it'd be THAT useful against Monster Reborn/Change of Heart specifically, which would necessitate 1-2 copies maybe. But considering it was printed in normal-monster beatdown, and a format where Clown Control thrived, and paying 4k LPs was equivalent to giving your opponent 3 free direct attacks, it was an actual downside.
      Once Jinzo got printed it actually became relavent specifically in trap-control lists as the only way to stop jinzo from hitting the field, but beyond that, nothing

    • @exorphitus
      @exorphitus 7 місяців тому +11

      Yes, exactly. Players then still valued lifepoints at a premium and balked at effects locked behind LP costs. Hence it took awhile to people to figure out that, no, paying half of them to negate any one action was actually game-winningly powerful.

    for super poly I feel like that assessment is a LITTLE off the mark. sure it took a while for it to manifest in a playable way but I feel konami always knew the potential this card had. In the anime the entire supreme king arc in gx revolved entirely around super poly and the power it held and I always had a theory that super poly is why it took SO long to get all the omni heros released. Because even if they weren't all bangers the idea of a hero deck being able to run super poly as a removal tool for any of the six attributes was a legit concern that restulted in a drip fed release. we didn't get escurialo til the xyz era for crying out loud

      I feel like that shouldn't count because people knew that the barrier statues were good, it's that they weren't searchable, so they'd play other ways to lock your opponent out of special summoning.
      So, a meta deck that searched any wind monster as part of the main combo would of course be like "What wind monster could I play? Oh! This Barrier Statue monster, of course!"

      The number of times Cobalt Sparrow single-handedly won games for me because the opponent didn't hit it before I made Assembled Nightingale is hilarious. You just don't expect things like that most of the time.
      My favourite part of the archetype is that you only need to slap an equip spell or two on Assembled Nightingale to win games with it alone (my favs were Power of the Guardians and Stoic Challenge). Well, that and being able to proc its protection and then just throw Recital Starling at any opponent's monster. Would Stoic Challenge's damage-doubling apply to the damage Recital Starling reflects?
      And the newer support makes it absolutely cracked. Celestine Wagtail's search effect makes it good enough already, but the fact that it turns Assembled into a net-neutral repeatable protection for all your on-theme monsters--assuming you only proc it on your opponent's turn--is busted.
      I'm not even going to ask what possessed Konami to give every Lyrilusc Xyz completely generic material requirements because I'm too busy enjoying the consequences (Snake-Eyes, anyone?).

      Granted tear really deals with all of those problems effortlessly. Before it any deck that could have a consistent 2 to 3 gy triggers off of a mill 5 would have been bricky as hell. Tear now plays like 5 bricks that are just good to mill and not draw and has just enough gas to not have dead hands in the average game.

    Things I'm surprised weren't mentioned:
    Solemn Judgement: release 2002 in Metal Raiders it saw next to no play at the time (which is somewhat understandable, as half your life points is quite a lot) that later was discovered to be extremely powerful; becoming something of a staple in many decks (after all, the only LP that matters is the last one), and radically changing Legacy Formats from the decks run before.
    Butterfly Dagger Elma/Gearfried the Iron Knight: on their own it's hard to see how they would be part of a combo so degenerate it resulted in bans... until you add to the mix any card that cares about activation of Spells, suddenly you have an engine that produces infinite Spell Activations, which in turn can be used to do things like draw your entire deck with Magical Library, gain infinite LP via Spell Absorption (which can become infinite Burn Damage via Flame Princess), and plenty more.

    • @yamispade
      @yamispade 6 місяців тому +1

      Solemn was honestly not worth running when it first came out. Even in Goat format it's a really underwhelming card unless you get it and can win after negating something. It wasn't until later when the game sped up that it became much more menacing to have an omni negate that only cost half your LP to prevent the opponent from catching up or outing something. Vanity's Emptiness is another example of a card being released before a time it could be abused to deny someone with minimal risk to the one using it.

    I would argue the Tri-Brigade archetype in general. People didn't really see just how consistent it was and never hit the limelight until people realized its synergy with Zoodiac, and then its independent power.

      It wasn't good on its own until Bearbrumm. Before that people were using it as a way to give Lyrilusc combos structure and to abuse Simorgh but that wasn't really beating full power VW and Drytron.

    MX Sabre Invoker fits the bill pretty well. Didn’t get completely busted until Zoo format because people actually thought that sinking 2 level 3s to search for a 4 made it fine. The strength of extra deck guys just tutoring for a main deck guy was slept on and has ended up being one of the most common reasons an extra deck monster is banned. I still think MD and the OCG are absolutely insane for bringing the card back too since it’s only getting better with age and was immediately put to use in FTKs

    I definitely feel like Dark Strike Fighter (pre-errata) was 100% like this. On release, I definitely felt like no one really cared. Until they really, really, really fucking did and it was banned, like, 2-3 weeks later.

  • @adamushu

    I predicted unchained would be insane. A second Aruha on a quick effect that sets a card from deck that summons a monster from deck? Reads like a custom card, insane boost for both consistency and extension. Shayama gave it graveyard recursion the deck desperatly needed. And now they have a link 2 searcher that also functions as a second Muckraker but even less cost. Holy shit and all that is before even considering Wave High King Ceaser.
    I thought i was going crazy when nobody payed attention.

    We really thought Adventure was going to do hot nothing, then remembered you don't need to play an archetype as a cohesive deck to be good. I remember reading the effects on Dracoback and going, "Okay, but you have no repeatable access to this, and it's the deck's only reasonable interaction; what's the end board?"

    • @karetsu889
      @karetsu889 7 місяців тому +1

      Like I remember when Telephon was revealed everyone over looked it. Then they read it. Or rather didn't read a part of text that wasn't there. It wasn't OPT and it can target other copies of itself. People saw how easy it was to wombo link OTK with it.

  • @Quasartist
    @Quasartist 6 місяців тому +1

    It took a long time, and not anywhere near as cracked as some of these other cards, but I think Destiny Hero Plasma is a decent contender for the theme. Basically pack filler up until a couple years ago, and then finally becomes a key component for a very powerful strategy, letting you sit on him for a turn to Skill Drain your opponent's entire board and then tag him out for DPE, arguably the best utility monster at the time since every deck was going out of their way to run some form of jank to be able to fit it in. Plasma has never been bad per se but he definitely waited patiently for his turn in the spotlight and it paid off in spades for a few years.
    I also think that Upstart Goblin is an interesting contender as well considering when it came out it was just strictly a worse Jar of Greed and Pot of Greed, but then as the game started to really ramp up the speed around 2014 then more and more people started taking advantage because everyone started realizing that a thousand measly life points typically didn't make a difference because many decks either didn't OTK anyways and would have to split their push for game into at least 2 turns anyways, or they had over 9000 (heh) damage on board so they could afford the leeway regardless but also just drawing cards is universally good.
    Not to be "that guy" but I also saw a lot of potential in Kaiser Colosseum way back in the day too. I wasn't skilled nor coherent enough to take advantage of it but even then when tribute summoning was a thing I knew it had potential. Look at it now. Wild.
    Also going on the record to tell everybody that I FUCKIN TOLD YALL FIRE KINGS WERE GONNA BE GOOD AND PEOPLE LAUGHED AT ME, NOW THEY'RE GOOD IN THE OCG AND THOSE SAME PEOPLE ARE NETDECKING. I DIDN'T FORGET!

    Not generically strong, but Destiny HERO - Dark Angel. Completely ass for the entirety of its lifespan, and when the Master Rule 4 HERO support released there was probably some people wondering if it was consistent to set up by that point, but everyone and there mother was on links by necessity and loved having a level 1 on their field.
    Cut to DPE and Denier’s release, and suddenly not only was Dark Angel easy to set up in the combo by going through Mali, Denier, and DPE popping itself, but also the meta was in just the right position to where not many decks actually had a way to get rid of some random-ass level 1 dingus that was literally an Imperial Order
    However, Dark Angel’s time in the sun is probably gone already, relegated to the sideboard, as the best decks right now are all on link-1s, or Diabellestar, or can pop it to plus, or on S:P, relegating DA to the sideboard for specific matchups

    Royal Decree, Skill Drain and every other monster related floodgate trap.
    Because when those cards released monsters had no effects, besides the occasional float or maybe a removal effect on a flip, so having them negated wasn’t considered good.
    And special summoning wasn’t a thing outside monster reborn for most decks, until Synchros were released, so preventing those wasn’t good.
