This is one of the best Twitter Threads we've had recently. I was laughing my head off the entire time. I legit want to sit down with my friends and just powerscale normal monsters for several hours now lol
Pro mtg player Luis Scott Vargas created a format for magic that is basically this twitter thread. If you argue your card should be able to do something on flavor grounds and your opponent agrees, it can. And an impartial “flavor judge”resolves flavor disagreements.
Fun fact: In Japanese, Doma The Angel of Silence "Rules over death," and decides who lives and dies by glancing at them. So "the end of existence" is a weird attempt at a child-friendly localisation for 'death.'
Doma combos with the candle of fate! When the candle runs out, the duel ends because the opponent's fate is decided, good or bad. With the duel over, it's the end of existence, and Doma reigns supreme!
It's an entire book...you expect me to read an entire book to understand what his effect is? No I'll just pretend it's a vanilla and attack it with Armail
I used to summon metal armored bug in day care and use its flavor text which says it destroys everything in its path. I literally dragged it across the carpet in a big squiggly line and if my opponent placed one of the cards where the bug was, in its “path” so to speak, I made them send it to the grave yard.
I feel the new prize cards, Anotherverse, imply they would work like Thunder Dragons. Having strong in hand, gy, field, and banish effects. But nah they’re vanillas. But shoutout to Jesse Kotton for being like 2 YCSs away being the first person who could do an Anotherverse archetype deck profile.
One thing I love is that if you go back to I guess when they started putting horns on em, there's a bunch of monsters with text that basically reads "look out, he's gonna poke ya!"
Lightbringer Lucifer is a representation of a character from the game Monster Strike, which has a lot of crazy powerful entities. Sadly the collab was Japan only but it lead to that card and a common/Millenium Rare reprint of Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon.
In Monster Strike, Lucifer is currently among the strongest, if not the strongest monster you can get. She trivializes so many stages and one shots multiple bosses.
Me and my brother used to play a format we called Duelist Kingdom which was basically this. If you could come up with an effect that fit the flavor text, it counted as an effect of that monster. For example Mystic Clown (edit: was in the vid) had the flavor text "nothing can stop the attack of this powerful creature" which we read as "attacks directly and is immune to effects during battle". If I have time I'll write out some other effects in the replies or something.
I know it it's not exactly on topic with power level, but Gunkan Suship Shari is still easily my favorite normal monster flavor text. How can you deny a flavor text about a monster's actual flavor?
Cosmo Queen: (Pokes a shrimp with her fork, and holds it up sideways, while looking over the table and in Neo Aqua Madoors eyes) So, uh, you rule over water? Neo Aquamadoor: (Flexing his muscles) Oh, yeah, it's awesome. I'm awesome. I can totally wreck the entire ocean. It's crazy isn't it? To think one being can be powerfull enough to control such a wide space. Anyways, what do you rule over? Cosmo Queen: (awkwardly sinking her fork and breaking eye contact) Uhm, stuff... uh, you know... like... nothing spacial... (cough) I mean special... nothing special.
If you read Mekk-Knight Avram ocg flavor text it better than check this out. “The hero who defends the light of the stars Must destroy the darkness of the illusory world And entrust his power to the chosen one. The will inherited by the chalice of the stars will become a new key And become the sword that cuts down darkness.”
Technically Yu-Gi-Oh is anime so there's a high chance the card scouter is just not picking up Kappa holding back his power level. Or just can't tell how in danger his friend is right now or something. Maybe he only accesses his full power when one of his friends is destroyed. Or maybe he has to be summoned by his father and watch a machine monster be destroyed. You never know.
nonono see, he only got UNLIMITED power. There are no limits on the height his power can reach. However like everybody who sells their soul, he has been monkey's pawed. His deal didn't actually make him any stronger by itself, it merely removed any limits on his potential. He could get infinitely swole, but he's still gotta put in the work at the gym, and he very clearly hasn't.
I used the Card Maker to give some effects to normal Monster based on Card Texto or other aparitions that have an effect (Anime, other games like DOR), Bone Mouse for example says that he revenges agains felines, so I give him an effect that when he battles against Beast and Beast-Warrior he destroys the Monster at the start of Damage Step, and I Mixed with his Duelists of the Roses effect: that when he battles your oponent cannot Activate trap cards, on this case I put this protection, with spells too.
I think Dharma Cannon is probably the best since it got a retrain that literally turned it into a Book of Eclipse + an anti link/towers trap (Destructive Daruma Karma Cannon).
I wish normal monsters weren't almost entirely forgotten by Konami when their names are not blue-eyes white dragon or dark magician. I'm not saying they should make normal monsters meta or anything, but at least print one vanilla monster per set to at least pretend that you care about them.
A great duality of normal monsters I like personally that match the gimmick Yugi and Seto got going is Cosmo Queen and Rabbidragon. Cosmo Queen got a retrain a while back.
Obviously the workaround for flying fish at a YCS is to chuck it like a shuriken across the table every turn… but then the ruling question is whether both players get the wishes… since they both just saw it fly.
I played Yu-Gi-Oh with a Mormon missionary. I had a very similar experience to the person that played Mystic Clown. As a very young kid I had a hard time explaining exactly why the text didn't matter.
If Insect Warrior's flavor text was an effect it would lean back to that Ep of Yu-Gi-Oh where Weevil's core strategy was to keep recycling "Pinch Hopper" over and over again to grow Insect Queen's attack strength every turn. Insect Warrior would probably copy itself everytime its destroyed so it could multiple the amount of normal summons so you can then hyper summon cards like Insect Queen faster to the field + since Insect Warrior copies itself everytime its destroyed that means every Insect Warrior feeds directly into Insect Queen every turn. Its like a perfect feedback loop that Weevil would have been proud of.
