As a home mechanic, most of the work I do it "for the first time". I've used your videos to replace the struts on my Element, now the plugs on my Pruis. I pulled the car in my garage, set up my laptop near by and had a buddy walk me through the process. It is so helpful to have an idea of how much force I should be using to remove a part or what I need to remove and what I can leave in place. A1 Auto is the best.

Thank you so much I knew it would be difficult. I followed the video step-by-step pausing it at every bolt and it took about 2 hours. My Prius now has no hesitation. I had the original spark plugs they lasted 91,000 miles.

Decided to log in to comment because this video was fantastic. I have never done car maintenance before. Saved close to a grand changing plugs and coils. More importantly learned enough so that if more problems ever arise I‘ll try and get ‘em done without going to the shop

Great video. With this & another video, I was able to do this job on my 2010 Prius in my driveway in about 1.5hrs, the bulk of the time being removal of the upper/lower cowl -- and then trying to remove the sparkplug with a 5/8 instead of a 9/16. Note: 9/16 was the correct one. This really is such an easy job once you watch the video. Tip: have a small plastic container with sections in it -- all in all there are about 6-8 different sets of screws that it needs to hold (6-8 steps in which you remove screws). This made removal & re-installation much easier as I knew which screws to use.

I'm not exactly sure what they're doing differently with this video, but I like it MUCH better than most other how-to auto videos I've watched. Some combination of the guy's pointed commentary which isn't too much or too little, the high definition camera probably also running 60 fps or higher, the great lighting, good camera angles, I don't know exactly, but it's a darn good video.

Way to go Toyota. I never had to do all this to change plugs in my 2009 Prius. I think I had to unscrew and move a secondary fuse box and some of the plugs required getting the socket and extension in place before attaching ratchet.
I DID have to do all this when installing a new strut - and again when I discovered I needed to change the strut mount too.
Clean the upper cowling before installing.
While you have the cowling off, maybe spray strut mount rubber with silicone or AT-205, and something to protect the metal parts from rust.

1A Auto "What about a video on cleaning EGR valve and cooler on a late model Toyota!". I have 3rd gen Prius and what worked well, was an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three Nuts in the back. I had a hard time reaching the 4th HIDDEN 12 mm nut underneath the EGR cooler. Then, used a Torx E8 socket for the two Bolts ( in the back of EGR cooler) and we finally freed the EGR assembly.

I followed the video step by step. Immediately afterwards the car reports that my MPG dropped by about 6 MPG. Apparently this is a common issue. Did I do something wrong? According to one poster on the Prius forum, I simply need to wait a few gas fill ups, for the system to recalibrate it's calculation of actual consumption.

To prevent socket to stay stuck on spark plugs just spray a bit of silicone lubricant on the inside rubber and you will be good

Good video. Only thing I would have added is the anti-seize lubricant and some dielectric grease.

Antiseize shouldn’t be used on most modern spark plugs like NGK’s or OEM nippon denso iridium plugs for Prius. In fact, antiseize will likely increase over torque risks.

Did you use OEM plugs or aftermarket?

What size torque wrench do you use? Can you do it without a torque wrench?

      @1AAuto  6 років тому

+Lover Christian Thanks for watching! Any torque wrench that can be set to the spec that is needed will work. In this case it will be 15 ft lb. We actually carry one that is perfect for this job, check it out here: www.1aauto.com/torque-wrench/i/1axaa00045

My wife drives a 2019 Lexus UX 250h and removing each spark plug takes less than 3 minutes for DIY. My 2010 Prius is $330 to replace spark plugs at dealership.
Not sure if dealership replaced the ignition coils.

  • @toninocars

Did anyone try to remove the coils without taking all that out? I have an Auris hybrid that is very similar car to this if not exactly the same and I do the plugs without that hassle.

Hi just a piece of advice if you are trying to get the old spark plugs out use a magnetic socket

I use a special socket at AutoZone but then I returned it and got my money back lol.
