Skyrim: What The Civil War Should’ve Been - 7 Amazing Mods to Overhaul Skyrim’s Civil War
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 чер 2024
- Skyrim is in the middle of its biggest conflict in centuries as Nordic separatists hope to turn Skyrim into her own independent kingdom, while the Empire desperately attempts to keep the region as a loyal province. The Elder Scrolls 5’s defining conflict (aside from the dragon stuff) is both an interesting and immersive one. However, over the last seven years, modders have taken it upon themselves to make it even better. So today we’ll be taking a look at some amazing mods to overhaul the conflict between the Empire and the Stormcloaks.

Bit unfair with Skyrim
For real
@Nick Urr NOW YOU GOT HIS THEME SONG STUCK IN MY HEAD!!!!!
George Bridgeman-Sutton Not really. Vanilla Skyrim is a mile wide and only about half as deep.
The scale is phenomenal, the exploration is brilliant, and the lore is endless. However, a lot of quests are linear and simple. The combat lacks depth. The skills you can unlock are boring. There’s lots to do, but very few ways to do it.
Mods unlock a lot of potential for the game.
The more I find out about how much content was cut from Skyrim the more bare it feels
I know it's kinda sad. I used to think it was a pretty big game, don't get me wrong it is big, but when you of all the stuff that didn't make it in it seems kinda empty
Yeah. I am playing Vanilla Skyrim on Nintendo Switch. It is indeed big when you look and play it as it is. But there are mods that just flesh out what should have been. For instance, I never cared about Civil War since I have played it on my first playthrough and it was lackluster to say the least.
I probably play on PC and do these civil war mods though, it would feel amazing. xD
@@ImKarl I know what you mean. The vanilla Civil War in Skyrim, while a "sign of the times," is so boring that almost all my playthroughs I just have my Dragonborns go, "Meh. Not my circus, not my monkeys... let them fight it out on their own, I've got a World-Eater to deal with."
(Well, except for the Thalmor, of course. Racist secret police elf patrols get soundly dealt with whenever I see one... or they _will._ )
Karlsanada13 - The Gamers Camp just the amount of bugs with not having the unofficial skyrim patch mod is blatent and frustrating at times. Skyrim on switch is probably my favourite platform simply because i can play it in bed, and because I’m getting the game raw and how it was when I first played it back in the day. But my god do I miss even the basic essential mods.

Yeah, storming Whiterun as the Stormcloaks should've felt like a moment when the war turned and the Imperials were on the run. It was just me and like 5 Stormcloaks killing like 7 Imperials, hitting the Jarl once, then he gave up. bruh.
I was fighting for the imperials!!
Don't forget that all the Jarls that were replaced end up spending the rest of the game cramped up in Solitude castle basement sipping tea together and casting you angry looks.
the entire Civil War questline felt like actual make believe, like everyone was just playing war, like in the south park game. In the invasion of Whiterun, I could almost hear the cool kids loking at the "battle" and saying: "look at this nerds LARPing"
"Hitting the jarl once, then he just gave up" This is why you should play on something like master.
@Takefive 123 Yeah, this is my problem too, but I think the size of cities is limited by game software itself - If we would have hundreds of NPCs and cities as big as in AC for example, the game would simply not make It, I suppose. The engine would not handle it. Just look how messed up Skyrim is in his current form. 80% game bugs have to be repaired by modders cuz Bethesda doesn't give a shit about It). I've always hated Dan Vávra's 100+ reasons Why Skyrim is a Bad Game (Dan Vávra is director of Kingdom Come: Deliverance ). He for example hated Skyrim houses not having a toilet, which is completely irrelevant. But in some point he was fucking right. It's utterly fucked up with bugs.
Honestly, I think there should be a cavalry element to the civil war, just to spice it up even further.
That would be sick! They should’ve given enemies horseback combat too.
I don't know, I feel like it would end up being more disappointing than anything else. Horseback combat just isn't as robust as it would need to be to make it as impactful as it should be. And from a lore perspective, it makes perfect sense for the Legion to not use calvary at all, considering they're a Roman analogue. The Stormcloaks however should definitely be using calvary, and if you want the extra spice of realism, they should be using light calvary mixed with light skirmishers to harass the legion and crush scouting, foraging or construction parties. That was the Germanic tradition, and it was incredibly effective. Although we also have to consider that this is incredibly late in the Imperial period, and the Nordic elite have been romanized culturally for so long, we should expect this role to be filled by conscripted auxiliaries, in the Roman fashion. Basically if we saw calvary at all, we should expect them to mostly be former bandits, reachmen, dunmer or argonians being forced to fight with the Stormcloaks either under threat, or under the promise of land and rights in return for their service. Which would be a fascinating element of world building that makes the Stormcloaks a little more nuanced than they are in game.
Hmmm.... The Empire having cataphracts and the Stormcloaks having mounted huskarls? That'd be interesting to see.
@@skynyrdjesus The Romans regularly used calvary auxiliaries. I see no reason the empire wouldn't. Especially considering they had horsemen in Oblivion.
Im pretty sure that the fact the only viable terrain to use calvary would be from Rorikstead to Whiterun, it seems like a waste of resources, Skyrim is a pretty uneven and harsh terrain to justify a calvary unit, like, mountains, marshes, lots of rivers, bringing horse for anything other than supplies seems cumbersome, but, i think im looking at it with to much realism, arent i? xD
Wait, a Bethesda game isn't finished? Next you're going to tell me EA re-releases the same sports games every year with only minor tweaks.
Say what you want but the shot tweaks in NHL 20 were well worth the rebuy, and the skating tweaks of NHL 19 were worth that rebuy.

You know, The Witcher 3 did a good job at showing there was a war going on. You walk past lots of patrols, people hanging from trees, sometimes villages burned to the ground and people fleeing from the war. There are refugee camps, border checkpoints and an area piled with bodies from a battle. Imagine how Skyrim would have been had they had that level of depth to the civil war. You can pretty much ignore it, no consequence. Sometimes I even forget its a thing since nothing is changed.
And then you head to Toussaint and the change is magnificent with aforementioned war stuff not being there

The IV legion was actually drawn mostly from Skyrim, hence why Rikke was its Legate. Before Tullius, General Jonna commanded the IV Legion (during the Great War) which is said in-game to be a "Nordic Legion". There are definitely other races in the imperial army, but vanilla actually makes more sense according to the lore.
You also said mostly from Skyrim.
Furthermore Nords aren't the only inhabitants in Skyrim.

I’d honestly like a mod that implements new story elements in the civil war quest line. Perhaps your assigned to a specific unit, filled with a unique cast of characters that portray different attitudes soldiers have towards the war; conscripts from High Rock and other provinces speak of their disconnected nature from the politics from the conflict, and how they just want to get their service done and go home, while a Nord and imperial character speak of their willingness to fight for the values of strength and stability endemic to the empire. The story progresses and you are eventually able to command your own unit and make decisions that have real world consequences. You could decide whether or not to kill a deserter, to punish a village that is suspected of harboring stormcloaks, etc. You could also experience genuine character development in humanizing portrayals of stromcloaks as prisoners of war. I feel like a mod that could make you feel more control as a character, that gives you the opportunity to be immersed in this tumultuous conflict would be incredible.
**These are rough ideas btw, obviously they should be polished and made to work within the given lore of the imperial and stromcloak armies. I just feel like the quest line for the civil war, while okay, was quite underwhelming considering it’s potential.
That would be cool!
Also I think in lore most of the conscripts in the legion in Skyrim do actually come from Skyrim so I doubt there’s be many foreigners trying to do their last tour so they can leave the army honourably etc. But that’s still a cool idea regardless of lore or whatnot
This is pretty cool I didn’t know some of these I’ll have to download some keep up the good work

The video sent me down and insane rabbit hole I've been downloading mods for the past 2 days
I always thought Markarth would be one of the best cities to defend (or worst to try and attack!) with all the elevation changes and sources of cover for archers. I'm also hoping these mods add battlemages or healers! Lore and NPCs mention them pretty often, but the fort battles in vanilla were all dudes with bows and swords whacking each other.
I find these mods to be very grand and over amazing and I'm glad you showed them to everyone. Thanks to the count down once again!! Keep doing you man!
I had no idea these Mods existed, thank-you so much for making this video and a HUGE thank-you to the people who made them. I'm 3 days into the improved civil war Skyrim and I'm loving it :) I mean, walking into a battle between Stormcloaks and Imperials and getting an excuse to kill Imperials is always good :)
The fact that you can toggle the ability for Redguard troops to spawn as Storm cloaks makes me happy. Only because of one line spoken by Endon in Markarth (the Redguard silversmith who you can fence things to for the guild that walks around with his family) where he mentions he has a son off fighting for the Storm cloaks.
Yeah, I think the Stormcloaks should include a few of the random Non-Nord humans in it. It's not too unbelievable and there's some evidence for a few up them joining up in the game. After all, all humans took part in The Great War and anti-elf sentiment wouldn't only be felt by Nords. Of course, it should be vastly majority Nord though.
I love how this answered my questions about IP when you were talking about War Zones super cool thx! :)

Honestly, if you started covering mods more often I'd definitely watch. You've covered enough (arguably) lesser known mods that I'm invested in the mod videos you release. Themed mod videos too, like this where you provide almost like a pack of mods to make one thing really good, rather than just a mish-mash, is a rather unique style in the nearly oversaturated mod video market.
I remember seeing a storm cloak patrolling the northern roads of Haffingar, and legion soldiers escorting a storm cloak prisoner *literally right outside of Windhelm*
Both of these occurred before I even chose a side for the civil war
What's really cool about the Diverse Skyrim mod (and this video) is what I thought when Nate said that the new Stormcloaks would all be Nords. For some reason, I thought there should at least be Redguards to spawn, and just when I thought it, a caption announced that that would be the case. @@MoogleSan because he's not saying the long version of mod, he's saying modules because thats what mod managers use.
I'm quite sure there are a couple of games which also use the name "module" for mods to be activated ingame/inlauncher.
@@MoogleSan i think he say it ironically like mods are dlc
For those who may not have English as a first language and be struggling with the same part, "Mod" can be interpreted as either and still fit in this context without breaking the universe or anything.
Different stages could also use it with a different name. When you're downloading or installing it, you're getting a game modification.
When you're selecting it in your load order, it could be considered a module as at that point, your game is made up of modular files that can technically be moved around and replaced, removed, etc.
So modifications or module, neither is technically wrong.

Can’t wait to apply these mods. Can’t believe my Xbox hasn’t exploded from the amount I’ve used thus far
It's a bit late, and after trying each of these, I don't recommend any of them, if you're tired of all the bugs in vanilla. Each of these has their own bugs .... liiiiike ... 1) If you accidentally kill an allied soldier, all the rest will gang up on you after the battle. 2) If you accidentally kill an allied soldier, and they don't gang up on you after the battle, they will gang up on you when you return to the forward operating base camp. 3) If you use any aoe spells or shouts, and they injure or kill an allied soldier, see #1 and #2. 4) If you don't take command in the actual attack of a hold city, you will likely lose the battle. 5) Battles take place everywhere all the time, which makes riding from one quest to the next even much more trying on the player's patience. 6) If you're tired of long, pointless speeches, avoid all of these.
I’m gonna start a survival civil war play through with all of these mods.
Hey Nate, I joined the Thieve's Guild and got a little destructive when I did one of the first quests. I was supposed to burn 3 bee hives at a certain location. I used magika and accidentally lit more than 3 and got yelled at for it. Just a suggestion for one of your Tiny Details vid.

I don't think the Stormcloaks should be an entirely Nordic faction. I think they should be like 99% Nords with some token diversity to convince people they're not racists.
Or hell, small mercenary bands that joined the cause for a real reason.
I always play as an Orc my first playthrough of any ES game, and it went real bad for Ulfric and his boys. But you don't belong here!!!" and the fact that the Empire welcomed and even revered (when politically expedient) Orcs as warriors and craftsmen pretty much decided that. Why would I work for people who need me but don't want or care about me in a game, I gotta do that shit IRL, lol!
Armor disguises is another good mod for this list. It allows the troops to attack you if you are wearing the enemy's chothing.
this is so FU**ING cool! Id love to see a great player with a dope machine use all of these mods, then use the alternate start mod to get right here. Have a massive civil war narrative 😮
That dude Nukt for example. That ish would be sick!
Thanks for this. I'm definitely getting diverse skyrim.
The Imperials think we need their laws. Pffft.
Rule under Ulfric would be terrible
Triclyde At least there wouldn’t be any thalmor justicars running around arresting innocent folk for worshipping their god.
@@connorgolden4 Did you complete the main questline? At the thalmor embassy you have a book about Ulfric. He is a spy lool
@@maxxfaxx5408 no he isn't a spy he is being tracked/watched by the filthy Thalmor but isn't a spy.
@@morrigankasa570 my bad
Hey, has anyone got a link to his load order/mod list? The graphics look amazing.
I would like that aswell
Me too.
yeah, i want to know those so bad
Sammmeeee
Bump
You should do a play through of this, it would be so sick
this was incredibly helpful!
You actually made me want to play the civil war quest line for the first time in 8 years.
Thank you.
What are your graphics and armors/weapons mods?
You sir, have convinced me to pick up Skyrim again.
The fuck is your visuals pack is beautiful

See this could have been SOOOO easy to implement, this is the type of detail obsidian wanted to do in NV but was way to rushed
Finally! Skyrim's civil war will be better this way.
After years of finishing civil war quests multiple times already. I don't play the quest any more to prevent the civil war story from finishing. But I love adding mods in which random battles may still occur.
Awesome I'll hook them up right after I get on with the ceremonial burning of King Olav
I’d love to know what enb he uses it looks like a great mix of fantasy and realism
When I replayed the game the civil war and history of the great war was the most interesting to me. Imperials for life ;) Because the "battle" missions were comprised of a small amount of npcs, I used to role play that my group was part of a special forces unit head by the dragon born. Missions to sneak in and take forts, while the big wars were off screen.
Imperials are gay stormcloaks are better
Levi Smith no u
It’s sad that open civil war crashes the game every time you enter a large battle maybe you just need a super powerful computer
THANK YOU! Now my Skyrim will feel less empty and make more sense! FINALLY! I'm soo excited. I've been waiting until I find the best mods to actually really play the game. I have the Skyrim VR Version.
Apollodown: "Wait, that's illegal".
These really seem like they would make the game a lot more of an actual location. A living environment. To be frank it was a few years after I finished Skyrim that I heard there even was a civil war. I went back just to play it at one point and it was a neat bit of extra content I had missed. Because why would I as a free roaming adventurer want to join the Imperials or Stormcloaks? Especially when it starts off as a tiny misc. quest? It never appealed to me.
Even after it was just.. something that happened. But a proper use of mods and it can actually give the feeling of taring the province apart. Make things a bit more war torn and harsh.
Are you serious? They mention it right at the beginning of the game.
All of these mods make skyrim what it should of been. Thanks so much modders, and yes, your Epic Nate.
enjoyed
i have been looking for mods loke these
What graphics mods are you running? The game has that whole "oblivion" look to it...
I would also really like to know
@@namenick9057 He has a video detailing his graphical load order
Who remembers civil war overhaul
The one that taken down because of Trump?
You can still get a copy on reddit
I still use it
I have it still, 4.0
Imperial Soldier it was taken down because the modder supported Hillary and took it down to to be apart of “I’m with her” movement thing. The modder took it down to put it back if Hillary won. At least this is what I heard.
Would love to see a mod where you incite a revolution. Like after finishing the civil war quest you choose a hold and slowly tear their government apart, create unrest, choose a successor and have them operate a shadow government (or use a guild) eventually leading to full on revolt where now you and or the guild control the hold, have to put down similar rebellions, maybe work the next hold over. It sounds a lil like the Stormcloaks but would start as just you, and needing to build support while staying hidden and quiet, rather than the already fully established stormcloaks
this is awesome good list man
