  • The Swedish Strv 122 is considered to be a competitor to the best Main Battle Tanks like Abrams or Challenger 2. Just a few were delivered to Ukraine as a part of the Swedish military aid package and we are lucky enough to get to talk to the crew in their rare free time.

@@Leadfoot_P71 I disagree that we sent too few. The west should've sent these tanks, as well as fighter jets, during fall of 2022, so that the spring offensive of 2023 could've started the second nature permitted, instead of in the summer. The Russians were given too much time to prepare. That's the biggest mistake.

The swedish and Ukrainian companianship against the moscovites has a long history. When the Swedish army began to approach Ukraine under the nordic war the kosackleader and hetman Ivan Mazepa decided to seek it out, and on 28 October 1708 he made an alliance with Charles XII the king of Sweden to fight the russians. You're welcome. I'm happy we were so quick in doing the right thing here. The Russians NEED to learn that they can't just run their tanks into any neighbor capital when they like - and this time, they actually couldnt, due to preparations, open info, and everybody deciding to step in. Good.
However, we must not forget to win the world peace, too. We can't afford to leave people behind and think it's just their problem anymore. There needs to be guarantees and trust for all the bloody trauma from the thousands of years of agriculture, and the slavery and warfare that came with it. So - we need to end poverty and the view that people need to be forced to work to cooperate and do their part. It's not true, as long as we don't have to work so bloody much and don't have the time to really get to KNOW people. As it was in the beginning, when we were few and all of us had to cooperate, and with other groups, for daily sustenance.
It worked without real wars for tens of thousands of years, so we have it in us - we are cheifly the cooperating ape, not the competitive - even if competition can be used as long as it is kept friendly - so the losers too gain from the game.
So... Now, lets solve this together from now on! :D

STRV 122 was built in Sweden by Swedish materials which include probably the highest Quality steel and iron in the known world.
they differ alot more than the looks might tell you.
Then there is the issue of Time as Swedish manufacturer are much smaller and not able to remodel and produce tanks at a speed fit for Ukraines needs atm.
But Barracuda armour built for STRV 122 will mostly fit Regular German made Leo2's
As Barracuda has been proven to be highly effective EU could buy kits and send them to Ukraine for other vehicles but it will again take some time.
A decrease by 70% in thermal and night vision is extreamly good and that is what Ukraine themself claim from experience from the front.

There is no other L2A5 in ukraine. You might have confused them with L1A5 that there are over 150 of. Most of the leopard 2 in ukraine is A4 that is consideraly older. Its something like 2 decade older than the A5. There is also a bunch of A6 in ukraine. The A6 alreddy have a few of the upgrades the strv122 have.
Worth saying is that the strv 122 was fully made in sweden from german component.
That is the tank chassie and Amrmour was made from scratch in sweden specifically to make the strv 122. While it might sound like sweden bright A5 and remodeled, that was really not what happened.
Strv122 is difrent down to the frame as the A5, while still very simular.

They need active protection systems (APS) like Trophy or AMAP-ADS for every MBT and IFV. I believe these APS could be adapted against FPV drones and would significantly reduce vehicles losses by ATGMs, drones and RPGs. These, besides landmines, have been the main killers of vehicles.
The initial losses of western vehicles in the offensive to KA-52s would have also been significantly reduced if they had deployed with APS.

They probably do both, depending on terrain and landscape, but lets say it's the night shift, clearing treelines with HE rounds, I would guess it would be "pretty" safe though, or is there thermal scopes on RU equivalant to e.g AT4?

    • @tessjuel
      @tessjuel Місяць тому

Probably because they can. Ukraine has more Leopard 1s than Leopard 2s/Strv 122s and for long distance shelling they're fairly equal. The Leo 1's gun is smaller but also more precise and its weaker armor and single sight shared by the gunner and commander don't really matter much when the enemy is a kilometer or two away.
So it makes perfect sense to let the Leo 1 handle the long distance shelling and reserve the bigger one for the occasions when they need to get up closer to the enemy.
      ---
This shows up in the losses btw. Here are the numbers from Oryx for the different Leopard variants as of 30th March:
      Leopard 1A5: 1 damaged, 0 destroyed
      Leopard 2A4: 9 damaged, 9 destroyed
      Leopard 2A6: 6 damaged, 5 destroyed
      Strv 122: 6 damaged, 1 destroyed
There is no info about how many of the damaged tanks have been recovered and repaired.
Now, the Leopard 1A5 has been been grossly underestimated by pretty much everybody but it's still a medium tank with limited armor protection, not a modern main battle tank. So the amazingly low loss rate can only be explained if it's mainly been given a role that keeps it away from direct fire from the enemy.

depends on what you mean by that. It can take hits from many AT weapons and keep the crew alive. Depending on where an AT weapon hit the tank, it could either continue working, or be disabled, forcing the crew to evacute the tank. No tank, including the Challenger 2 or Abrams is indestructible. The Swedish variant is very well protected, the survivability of its crew is very high. But a direct hit on the rear from a heavy AT would most likely destroy the enginge, and that way render it immobile.
