  • it’s finally time to review the movie Casino. Martin Scorsese really made a fascinating film that needs a lot of dissection to truly grasp how good it is. Sure it has some problems, especially with how it depicts locals, but generally it conveys a truly amazing message. This one really gets at the root of Vegas history. It’s a must watch for any local or those who actually want to learn about the history of the mob in Las Vegas.

This one had cameo appearances by a few people who were actually involved in real life LV events of the 1970’s, so it’s fictionalized for narrative purposes, but has some big picture truths.
It’s also in Scorsese’s tradition of unreliable narrators, so you factor that in. The movie took place over the span of roughly 8 years, whereas the real life events happened in a 20 year span, so the order as shown was different. Also, some of the scenes whip around, like they’re being told by a cokehead, which Nicky (Spilotro) and Frankie would have been at the time. 😊
Mob outfits ultimately lost out because in the end they weren’t all that efficient with the whole operation. With the skims and theft, they just ended up tripping over each other.

This film is one of my favorite mob films aside from Goodfellas. It’s kinda regarded as historical fiction in that even though they characters are named and acted as different then their real life counterparts, the events actually did happen.
Also I kinda do like how the characters are in ways like their irl counterparts. For example, Lefty (just like Rothstein the movie) wore very colorful and pretty snappy suits. Like if you compare videos and photos of Lefty in real life to Rothstein in the movie, it’s pretty spot on. And it has been said that Lefty was a bit of a prick to the staff and be a real stickler for the smallest of things. I mean for Pete’s sake he even got pissed at someone for putting more blueberries in one muffin and put less in the other and told the chef to put a equal amount of blueberries in each muffin

I believe the Rosenthal-related inaccuracies go even further. Rosenthal’s self-written bio claims he “discovered the little known magic act Siegfried & Roy,” for example, when in fact S&R had been starring in Las Vegas for ten years by the time he hired them in 1977. (Small error in the doc at 38:25 crediting Rosenthal for hiring S&R in “1969.”) There are other instances where Rosenthal's boasts made it into the film to credit the "Ace" character. Outside of the business aspects, the movie deviated from fact in other areas where they could humanize and sympathize Ace at the expense of others around him, in the same way they painted the “Senator” as corrupt for the sake of justifying Ace’s actions.

Hmmm. I didn't think about that. Is there somewhere i can lookup what amount of flashing lights is too much? To me, it doesn't seem to be enough, but i have no idea what is actually a potential issue for epilepsy and certainly don't want to accidentally cause a convulsion

Excellent documentary, Thank You!! I remember the Golden Days of the 50's & 60's... I was just a kid but I remember my Mom & Dad getting all dressed up for a Night on the Town, the ladies had furs & big hair, the men sharkskin suits & big glasses... people had Manners and Mob or no, it was nicer then. 😢
