GP-5 filters, Asbestos confirmed

- Asbestos has now been confirmed inside the GP-5/ГП-5 gas mask filters. Asbestos is also in the Soviet/Russian EO-14, EO-16, and EO-18 filters.
A big thank you to Dan for sending off the filters to be tested.

If you have any of these filters, don't panic, remove them from the mask and keep them stored in an airtight container. Asbestos is only dangerous if it is disturbed.
If you have used the filter, hopefully no asbestos entered your lungs, you can go to a doctor to have tests carried out if you are concerned, but the asbestos contents of the filter are probably quite small.

I guess the trade off is its better to get the side effects of asbestos in the long term rather than die in a gas attack.
do they still get your seal of excellence ?
Originally there was no risk to asbestos filters, the asbestos was held in place inside the filter so it caused no issues to the user. It's over time that filters begin to break down and pose a risk to those using them, non-asbestos filters can still cause damage to the lungs if the filter medium escapes, but asbestos is worse.
Well jimothy_9th if they save your life then I guess they get the seal of excellence
That's true, BUT if you want to wear it for cosplay or similiar, it makes no sense to wear them.
Well you can do what the Brits did in WW1, piss on a piece of cloth and wrap that around your mouth and nose.
Sick!!!
My dad used to run miles in the full russian gear with respirators-on and a full load of ammo...12miles est..
in the mountains of Kazakhstan as part of a Training Program in the Soviet Military...
i'll let him know!
The filters would have been safe at the time so that's not really a worry, it's just to stop using them now as when filters age the risk increases of inhaling the filter material.
Got Ya, i was thinking that too, but you know... you never know!
Great, I've been inhaling GP-5 filters when I played through the Metro Games. Well, goodbye cruel world.
As long as it didn't break up it's fine.
Weaponsandstuff93 I Shaked it like you did in the video and there is no rattle, so am I ok?
Who knows, get a lung x-ray if you're worried.
Weaponsandstuff93 Just hope I won't be put on a long waiting list for an appointment.
You should be fine, I had the same issue.
Finally someone actaually says it has it and they are risky to where. I watched loads of other videos and people say It does not have asbestos and I ask what were your sources. I never get a response back. Thanks for proving your point. Your the only gas mask youtuber that I will trust. Great Video!
Cheers, as said this is information taken from several sources, lots of people have claimed years ago these filters contained asbestos with no information to back it up, however, we now have actual tests carried out to prove that they do.
Well I bought GP-5 gas mask with two filters (from 1988). In city we have laboratory in wich you can bring stuff to see if they are dangeours JUST for your lungs. I sent one of filters and they said it has 1% of Asbestos (they didnt say if its blue or red I think) and they say it's not dangerous because a lot of household items contain more asbestos. I dont know for other GP-5 filters ☺
Yeah but breathing through asbestos isn't a great idea unless you really have to.
Yes I have it just for "case of emergency". I don't I just feel safer to have it.
my grandfather used to be a Master Sergeant in the national guard in my home town in USA and he used to bring all kinds of things home like grenades with All the powder dumped out but he got these gas masks that had a canfis bag that said property of us military and and also "for non combative use only written on them" I wish I still had them
the way i see it, is a asbestos free filter costs 2 or 3 bucks more, so i just get clean ones
@@therideneverends1697gp-5 filter costs $1
My lungs thank you for making this video!
I was thinking about purchasing one from a Russian website and you have possibly saved them!
Thanks for the PSA! I, for one, have been playing it safe ever since I bought my GP-5. Have a nice S-10 filter on it. 👍
Yeah S10 filters are perfectly safe.
Wow I didn’t know the S10 filters could fit on a GP-5
Thanks for the warning, despite the fact I’ve been wearing one for a few years and breathing through one, thanks for warning others
Quick question, I bought the GP5 just for a Halloween costume (yeah, I should’ve known gas masks were more important). The seller, some website that sells weapons and stuff said that “the masks have been tested and DO NOT contain asbestos”. It kind of sounds fishy. Is there any actual way to remove the asbestos? And even if there’s no asbestos, would breathing through a possibly broken down filter for one Halloween night be ok?
If it's an old filter, it will contain asbestos, sellers lie about it now as lots are scummy and just want to carry on selling the filters, I'd not recommend breathing through the filter unless you find some way of filtering it before it goes into the mask.
Weaponsandstuff93 I was thinking that, but I’m still so impressed on how you reply to all of your comments, let alone so quickly! Thanks for the help, but I finally got the mask, and it says it’s called an IX-50, although it has the coffee can look so I’m not planning on wearing it unless I get word from someone like you, or some other good source that it’s safe.
A good idea to preserve the filter is to put in a coffie can, so if it does break down, it wont go all over you're house.
I've opened up mine and removed all the stuff it had inside, it's pretty useless now but at least it's safe to wear I hope!
How’d you do it, I’m thinking about it myself
Very helpful and informative. Thanks for the help.
Glad you found it useful.
I have a pmg-2 mask that uses a eo-64-k filter. Should i be worried about that as well or did they switch to a different filter material by then?
Thank you for doing this my friend is deciding from the gp5 or gp7
Ok but supposedly GP7 filters also contain asbestos.
thank God I've never had my hands on these, I can tell just looking at how big they are that they aren't that common in north American surplus, I can only think of a handful of times I've seen these gp5's but I can see why now
In Soviet Russia, asbestos breathes you! 😉
In Soviet Russia, filter poisons you!
In soviet russia you poison gas
In soviet russia the gas speaks russian (the attack of the dead men)
If you get the reports please do a video on them. I want to know the exact facts and figures considering I have worn my GP5 a lot.
One previous report said 2% another I've read said 10%, When I get this lot I'll let you know.
Hey I know I am a bit late, but thank you for this warning to the General Public!
- Regards GMG
No problem.
Could I theoretically remove the inside and just use an empty casing for wearing instead of it being for a practical use
I also want to know that
I have a filter that looks somewhat similar to the Gp-5, but it lacks the marking and has a 14 and a 03-25. Is it still unsafe?
I just bought a GP-7VM mask from an eBay seller who claims the following:
"All the gas masks I sell are equipped with more advanced modern filters GP-7K, which have been made after 1990 and have a different shape. This filters contain no asbestos.
When buying a gas mask from other sellers, specify the date of filter manufacture and shape. Besides asbestos content the old filters with a retention period of 30 and more years are improper for use, since small particles emerged from damaged filter material can have a harmful effect on your respiratory tract."
I researched it a bit and it's true that the GP-7K filters have a different shape and seem to be made in the 1990's onward (and continued to be produced even in the 2000's). Newer is always better with those filters, it seems.
Yes but I have never seen an asbestos report regarding GP-7/PMK filters so I am very suspicious of them. I have the attitude with Soviet/Russian filters that because so many do contain asbestos, I'd rather have a clean bill of health for a filter before risking using one.
Very true, but the GP-7K are probably "less" of a risk if all hell breaks loose and you have to wear either that one or the other (older) unit, lol.
That being said, I really liked your videos and recommendations, as I am a gas mask newbie (thanks!). I saw the one about the GP-7V mask after ordering one, unfortunately... so too late. Do you know a good source for the S10, FM12 or CT12 British mask that ships to Canada though? I've been all over the internet and it seems like no one has them for a reasonable price. I was wondering if you know of a mil surplus store in the UK that ships them internationally, for example. :)
Very well explained
Thanks.
Great I have worn a gp5 filter from 1984 and it's dented brilliant just 20 years and I have a fucked up disease
Lets hope not.
What if you'd completely tape the Filters interior Connection to the mask, that you could wear it, without the Oxygen being in contact with the Filter?
Weaponsandstuff93 Beneath the connector to the filter is this quiete small opening with some rubber on it. I don't know if you already talked about it, but what use does it have and wouldn't air flow through there, if the filter was "taped"? And also, does your channel really sparkle my curiosity for military masks, good work on your previous videos.
It's the O-ring to make a better seal, filters have to work through the intake valve or a mask would be useless.
You could break the exhale valve in theory if you wanted to use it as a prop mask, but that would be a waste when you could simply put a safe filter on the mask.
Weaponsandstuff93 Thank ya mate for the quick response. Appreciate it.
No problem.
I"m thinking about buying mine from eBay, and this is what the seller says: "The gas mask kit comes with a 2 mm hole in the filter and without a valve in the mask." so does this mean I won't breathe in the filter? I'm not planning on using the gas mask for real gas, just for looks. Thanks!
Mine was made recently, do you know if the replicas contain asbestos, i asked my dad and he said its illegal for them to sell filters containing asbestos (bought at an army/navy surplus store). You seem like more of the expert so i just want to be sure.
It won't be a replica mask, seeing as 100 million GP-5 masks were built, so don't use the green filter.
@@Weaponsandstuff93 Ok thanks for the info, also thanks for being so responsive even on a channel with this many comments and views.
my brother was breathing through an EO-18 filter from 1991 and is very worried about the asbestos it was maybe for 5 minutes should there be a concern we are not sure if it was sealed or not but we did get it attached to the mask bought from the underground hospital also it is a Hungarian 70m gas mask
He'll be find but don't do it again
im very happy i research my gas masks before buying thank you for making it easier for me
No worries
I don't wear my GP-5 with filter often maybe 10 tines a year, and for short periods of time. Am I fine or do I have stage all of them cancer?
You don't get a lot of the asbestos diseases until about 20 years after inhaling the fibres. If you're worried get a lung x-ray taken to check for clouding.
Weaponsandstuff93 Okay, thanks!
I did my asbestos construction training and the instructor made it very clear that it doesn't matter if you breathe asbestos for 2 months or 20 years, you may or may not produce conditions such as inflammatory lung disease, asbestosis (which for the record is HORRIBLE) and cancer. its all luck. In Australia, we had MASSIVE issues with asbestos and Mr. Fluffy so there are 'support groups' if you will that include workers that have worked with the stuff for 5 months and have had cancer and all sorts of things and some guys who worked with it for years and were never affected. so it does not matter if it was over a long time or a few hours a half year, you may still be affected.
Hello! when there was all the problem of ebola in amazon appeared the ebola 40mm filter. is that a really proven and safe filter?? Or i can find asbestos there? Thanks
I can't spot the filter, can you paste a link please?
Weaponsandstuff93 I've searched it but it hasn't appeared... but searching I found the 2016 israeli filter. Is that good?
Yes Israeli filters are very good quality, I have some myself.
The ones on Amazon now are 90s production advertised as asbestos free, charcoal filters....soooooo ?
Sounds like the seller is lying
Should call this channel 'The Gas Mask Guy'
Pretty sure somebody else is already called that.
There's a channel called Gas Mask Guys
I watch this as there is a gp-5 gas mask 5 feet away. Also, is it ok to have it uncapped or should I close it with the cap and seal?
Edit: what filter can I put in a gp-5 that doesnt have asbestos. And I wore it for about 5min, is that bad?
+Ellen Slattery You should be fine but if you really want to cap the filter do so, Polish FP5 filters are safe.
Ok thanks
I have a gp-5 gas mask with the original filter, its from 80s and i obviously no using it, but have it like in a shelf is toxic?
So, I have been using this one filter since I have first gotten the mask. Never used it more then ten minutes and probably only used it 14 times. Is the mask still okay? It's a gp-5.
The mask is fine just don't use the filter with it.
Propably
Warsaw pact soildiers wore this thing for hours w/out consequences
@@MannoMax Yes but back then they worked as intended, due to degradation the asbestos in them becomes problematic, whilst the filters were somewhat safe when new, they most certainly aren't today.
Last week it was confirmed by Finnish authorities that all GP-5 filters have it, even newer ones
Thanks for the update but it's just helping to confirm what we know, sadly some idiots are still going to put their fingers in their ears.
Do you have any articles, even if it's in Finnish it would be nice to have as an extra source that can be presented.
There's this recall note from a big military surplus store, as well as a news article about it. Both are in Finnish though. www.varusteleka.fi/fi/news/takaisinveto-cccp-gp-5-pdf-2-kaasunaamareiden-suodatinpatruunat-sisaltavat-asbestia/_597b29e0
www.is.fi/kotimaa/art-2000005306888.html
Thank you, Google translate works on Varusteleka, hopefully, I can use these links with the other news articles regarding Soviet filters to convince some people not to win a Darwin award by continuing to use the filters.
Weaponsandstuff93 Well I'm doomed I used БКФ from 90's for my black GP-5/SCHM-41M. I Used it for tens and tens of hours. Well, well. Let's enjoy these last years.
well fuck, thanks for telling me this now
Do you know if there is a way to remove the filters inside the filterunits without damaging it?
No and that's more dangerous than leaving it inside as the asbestos will become airborne.
Weaponsandstuff93 okay thanks for the answer!
Before I was this, I spent about 10 minutes total actually using the filter. Should I seek help? How long can I breathe through it before anything actually starts happening (not that I wanna push it). And can you do me a favor link me to the ones that are asbestos-free?
A single fibre of asbestos can lead to lung cancer, but it's unlikely to, if you are really worried get a lung x-ray, but there's nothing a doctor can really do if you get asbestos in your lungs anyway, I'd just avoid using them in the future.
I have a link on my facebook page to modern Russian filters.
Weaponsandstuff93 thanks man
Now there's a different problem. Just bought a GP-5 Mask with filter, the discription on Amazon said both are replicas but the filter looks nothing different and even has the markings on it. I even asked the seller about it and he just answered it would be a replica without asbestos. Sure, i could just not use them, but is there any way to find out if it's real or a replica filter? Shaking on a piece of paper didn't bring anything dirty out of it. One thing makes me a bit unbelieving that the mask isn't real. In the package was a little metal can I guess about 5 cm, so not very big. In there was a lot of thin cardboard and a piece of textile saying something like production march 1974, Tri-Acetate, chemical facility. And then a piece of textile with the number 45. Is the filter really a replica or not and I could report that seller for scam. Interesting story, I hope you read it and can help me at some point :)
It will be a real mask, 100+ Million GP-5 masks were produced, nobody makes replicas, the seller is a liar, the mask is safe just don't breath through the filter.
@@Weaponsandstuff93 So much info in one sentence and I took like 1 hour to write that stuff. But anyway, thank you man. I look forward to see more from you! Best wishes from germany over the channel via Dornier hahaha ;)
@@wueschdefuchs2188 Glad you enjoy the videos.
@@Weaponsandstuff93 I do, and now I will just report that salesman. Selling asbestos filters as undangerous charcoal filters can't be legal
great video I am thinking of ordering a few surplus gas masks off of budk or if there's another place where I can order them
You can get a lot of surplus masks off of eBay, were you after a certain mask?
I breathed through my GP5 filter once, for not a very long period of time. Do I need to be worried? I felt no dust and tasted absolutely nothing.
Shouldn't cause you any issues, asbestos exposure is a time and amount risk, like radiation.
I've chucked my filter regardless, even though it has seals. Better safe than sorry even if it's novel to keep the filter, right? Or should I recover it quickly and just put it in my display cabinet?
Yeah it's safe as long as you don't breathe through it, you could always put some tape over each end of the filter.
Is my GP-6 filter safe or is it just cancer waiting to happen?
EO-62-H
26-3-80-63
B 0412
There's no coal leaking through inside of it, it's all pristine white in there.
All Soviet filters contain asbestos.
I should get rid of it then, thank you.
Would the modernish GP-9 or, ppm-88 filter be considered safe?
In theory yes, are those the black filters that are either plastic or metal? If so they have the ABEK rating so should be good.
my gp-5 filter says 2018. Is there any risks that it contains asbestos??
It won't be an original GP5 filter, what does it look like?
When i was a kid, maybe 12 I got one of these from a military show and wanted to use the filter and mask as part of a costume. I pretty much used a screw driver/knife and tore it apart from the inside and, I remember feeling a lot of fibers running through the mask when breathing through it. (Halloween etc.) I'm 27 now. Am I screwed?
idk man probably
maybe get a chest x-ray?
The serial number on my gp5 filter says 90-133-1-something, is it okay to use? If not, how long can I wear the gas mask before I can be poisoned?
It's a filter from 1990 so it's relatively safe but will still contain asbestos, asbestos isn't a poison, it is fibre that gets stuck in your lungs and tears them apart from the inside, if any leaks you have caused damage to your body instantly, but the more you inhale the more likely you will be to get lung cancer, asthma etc.
Are there any alternative filters that are safe to use with the GP-5?
Polish FP-5 filters and modern Russian filters.
Thanks.
How long would you consider “little exposure” is
A few hours
Few weeks
Is there any safe EO-14 or EO-16 filters for sale?
Polish FP203 or P22/1w
So is it only the old filters? Because I want to get a new GP-5 and I want to know if it's safe.
+Dan Shires There's no such thing as a new GP-5, the production runs were the 1960s until 1991.
Hi im 15 and just bought a gas mask yesterday, i worn and used the eo 14 filter (i think) for probably 30 to 60 minuts combined, is that a reason to be worried?
Very little exposure is probably harmless but don't use the filter.
Is it safe to have a GP5 with original filter on on display in my room? I won't breath to it but it is just laying next to my bed on a shelf uncovered. Just to be safe I put the gas mask and the filter in 3 plastic supermarket bags and put them in a drawer but I have had this gas mask with the filter laying around for 2 years. I can't really do much about it now but how badly have I been breathing in abestos?
Yes don't shake it around or anything but it will be safe just sitting around.
Weaponsandstuff93 Thanks.
i bought a czech cm-4 gas mask that did not come with a filter, therefor i bought a gost 40mm GP-5 filter off ebay on the same day. I live in Australia where any asbestos and asbestos-containing products are completely restricted. what can I use for my gas mask that will fit? and how do I deal with it?
Get an FP-5 filter if you can.
hey would a GP-7 filter be good? with expiry dates, asbestos and all, the seller said it would be suitable. keep in mind this was two weeks ago, but i would just like your seal of approval.
Hello, i Just got my gp-5 today ! I would like to wear it with the filter for Fun when party. Could you explain how to remove all the shit in it ? Is it even possible to remove that ? And where can i put that after ? Thank you
I did a video on it but I'd still not recommend it.
Weaponsandstuff93 thank you for the quick answer ! Is it the video "what's inside a gp5 filter"? Because you open it without possibility of close it again without the filter part
You could in theory pull it out and then glue/weld it shut, but as said wouldn't recommend it.
Weaponsandstuff93 Yes, good to know, thank you for your precise answer
What type of filters are safe for the GP-5? Should I get a new mask?
It's easier just to get a NATO mask or an industrial mask.
If you just want to use the GP-5 as a costume, get any modern NATO filter and force it on.
Weaponsandstuff93 do natos work like the gp 5 filter without asbestos
is it safe if i buy the Charcole Versions of the GP-5 filter or does that also have asbestos or other bad things?
+Rektimus There isn't a charcoal version, the GP5 filter is half charcoal/carbon and half asbestos.
Ah oki. Thanks.
I have an Israeli 4/a1 gas mask and it came with a gp5 filter. I have used the filter multiple times but it was made in 96, if it does contain espestos then am I going to die?
Hopefully not, if the filter hasn't started to break down you won't risk inhaling asbestos, it's just a very good practice not to use the filter anymore as it's an unnecessary risk.
If you have inhaled asbestos hopefully it wasn't much and won't cause you much issue, best thing is to get a lung x-ray done if you are worried so at least a doctor can talk to you about treatment plans, such as using an inhaler if your lungs have been damaged, many people are exposed to small amounts of asbestos and are fine.
Do you know if the GP7 v filter from 1992 has asbestos inside?
I wouldn't trust it, some people have said the green filters used up until 2005 contained asbestos. All modern Russian filters are made of plastic or black metal not green/brown metal.
Weaponsandstuff93 Thank you
I'd personally say it's safe to use, because even if it contains asbestos, it's quite new so there is a very little chance of it leaking
i have only worn mine for about 2 hrs max and a minimum of 40 mins and i have tested them and they do not leak . What is the risk of asbestosis should i go to the doctors. i have tested the filter and it does not leak
Well it's up to you if you want a lung x-ray but I'd advise just not using the filters any more.
I have a filter that I can't identity! Please help. It's just labeled ABL 001 with an exp date of 87 on it
Does FP-5 filter fit PMG 2? (GP-5-M)
Yes
No
What about the "Coffee Tin" filters
If you mean "Coffee Can" filters, all but the TF-1 filter contain asbestos.
Well I bought a SCHM-41M gas mask and i will put a link to the website so you can see the filter because i could not find a name and I dont want to be poisoned
It will be a brown EO-16 filter I believe.
Don't breath through it but it's perfectly safe as a prop.
Is the eo-16 the one on the far right?
because on the website I got it from it shows a green cylinder filter with grooves in it
Hey so I wore a gp5 that my friend owns for like 5 minutes the filters from 86 production I can speak some of language understanding what was on the filter. So should I be worried??? I'm kinda freaked out.
5 minutes would hardly have exposed you to a dangerous level of asbestos but never breath through that filter again.
how can I check the date, my one look kinda different, it said ф4-246
do you hear the actevated charcoal shake with the gp 5 filter ???? I have one and I can't hear the activated charcoal
+lol something Depends how tight they packed the filter.
Are us NATO filters one like the c2 and lookalikes for the army masks usable or safe?
C2 depends on how you feel about chromium but I'd say yes they're safe
Hey I got a gp-5m online and I dont know what filter to use do you have any recommendations?
Polish fp5 filters if you can find them.
Weaponsandstuff93 Can I get them on amazon?
So is there a modern gost filter like the one on the far right there? I want a few big ones to connect the hose to but without asbestos.
I think MASKPOL makes industrial coffee can filters that are safe but I've never seen them for sale.
Weaponsandstuff93 Thanks ill check them out.
Ray Feltz found anything?
do new production soviet filters contain asbestos?
No such thing as new production Soviet filters.
You know because the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991?
any good russian coffee can/hose gas masks you'd recommend?
All contain asbestos so other than a prop, no.
Weaponsandstuff93 I know they all have asbestos, I'm talking about the actual mask itself, I can't find any good ones
I bought a gp5 gas mask of the internet and it came with one of these canisters and it say never used brand new I have used it with the filter should I be concerned
I just bought one off eBay it’s a brand new cartridge but it doesn’t say year of manufacture.
It’s marked up as rn-5, 26-v11-72-297
From a military standpoint, as long as it keeps someone alive long enough to get shot, then it does its job. If they live until the end of the war, that's an added bonus.
Does this also go for non russian filters like polish, east german, czech and so on
We don't know totally, Soviet EO-16 and GP-5/EO-18 filters are confirmed.
I would be highly suspect of other direct Warsaw PACT copies of said filters but things like the Polish and Czech 40mm filters may be safe, but why risk it?
Weaponsandstuff93 Im from east germany and the german version of the eo14 costs 5 bucks a pop
That means that the schm-41m filters have absbestos aswell?
ShM*-41 and yes they are normally issued with EO-14 or EO-16 filters, all contain asbestos.
Weaponsandstuff93 the one I ordered was called the schm-41m
It's the East German one but it's actually a ShM
Weaponsandstuff93 ok thanks
Just got my gp5 today, and wore it with the filter for a couple of minutes because I'm dumb. It's dated 1978, do you reckon I should be fine with that little exposure? It's not visibly dented or damaged as far as I can tell
Weaponsandstuff93 Great, cheers
If we use the filter for like an hour will it still effect us even if it's not leaking ?
If it's not leaking it should be totally safe, the point is why risk it.
I want to buy a gp5 an its with the filter and I'm low on budget so I can't afford another one can I just clean out the filter completely and be fine? (mask is only for costume)
It's pretty hard to do that safely, you'd need a clean room, asbestos disposal gear and be sure you're actually getting it all out, best wet would be just not to use the filter full stop.
There was a ГП-5 filter on my Israeli 4a1, now I know.
So don't use that filter.
are there filters that look the same as the gp5 but are different internally if so how do you tell the difference ?
No don't use any of the Soviet/Warsaw PACT filters, just use modern Russian filters etc.
Weaponsandstuff93 ok
Lol...you are so funny. "If you have any of these filters don't panic"
Well, you shouldn't.
Do you know were i can get gost filters for gp-5?
As in modern ones, Russian DOT filters etc but sadly they sell out fast on eBay
The PMK filters contains asbestos ?
Filters from pmk 1 if filters from pmk 2 up no longer have
What happen with the Amazon GP5 mask that shits has asbestos or no? I'm confused and I want to get one of those.
If they sell it with the original green filter, yes it contains asbestos
@@Weaponsandstuff93 oh thanks man I'm glad to here that.
is soviet pbf "hamster" gas masks safe thoe i just bought one
GP5 filters also contain lead in small amounts I figured using the Wikipedia
I have 3 and they have been in my closet for years with clothes toys pet supplies etc what do I do
Keep them there and don't use them.
Weaponsandstuff93 thanks
I don't think this is a question about 'standards'. When it comes to gas protection asbestos probably works pretty fucking well. I think it is more a question about culture, asbestos was seen as a wonder material in the USSR.
It depends if the asbestos was meant to be in the filters, a lot of people claim it got there by accident, I personally think it was there on purpose.
Asbestos was widely used in WW2 filters because it was cheap and effective, it was safe at the time because the filters were intact, but it is obviously not safe to be using an asbestos ridden 30+ year old Soviet filter.
Well it's a good thing that I never opened the gp-5 filter's because of all the rumours surrounding the filter's
+jerome thibodeau Yeah people used to joke about them for years with no proof but history has proved them right.
I agree XD
Hi,I have a romanian gas mask plus a filter from 1979 and it say on it CF-4,does it contain abestos, btw just got it today
CF-4 filters are Czech/Polish filters from the cold war, I personally wouldn't breath through it.
Weaponsandstuff93 ok ty
Weaponsandstuff93 also can u recommend a filter for my type of mask?
Should I throw my filter away is it safe to keep in my house?
It's perfectly safe if you either tape over the holes or plug it up.
I used mine for cosplay and airsoft purposes (i used appropiate lenses) And i hollowed out and washed the filters so they are non usable for gas and stuff but its appropiate for casual use
That's fine as long as you make sure you don't inhale anything when emptying the filter, although speaking of asbestos in the GP-5 filter it should be inside the paper areas of the filter so it's a lot safer to dispose of than sheets of actual asbestos.
Weaponsandstuff93 Yeah, i have a m40 from when i was in service
nato filter
should I throw mine away? I worn it a few times not for long though.
+Aceman Illegal to throw asbestos away, put the filter in a bag and put it in a cupboard.
I put a dust mask between the filter and the gp5 40mm input thread so it save to breath through cause dust mask filters out the asbestos from the air
As long as it makes a full air tight seal I guess that will work.
Its sandwhiched in between the top of the filter and the filter input
If it were me I'd still get a safe filter.
So, I have one of these with expired filter. Because I want to wear this for cosplay and I didn't want to breath with open filter, I dump the contents, and replace it with regular mask filter. It become not very good at nbc but hey, atleast you can wear this without fear of Covid
Hello, i got my gp5 mask with filter in russian prison museum for 3 euros in Latvia sooo maybe its fine if i use it?
Mask should be fine but not the filter.
I only wear my gp5 with its filter during photoshoots is that safe literally 20 seconds
Yes that's safe, safer still if you hold your breath, but asbestos damage to lungs is a time exposed and amount exposed risk, the asbestos in the filters is very low anyway, but don't use it unless you really need to.
I have bought a gp7 vm gas mask, and his filter it has this numbers, 184-4-92, it has asbestos??
Don't use any GP-7 filters.
You know were i can buy some new 40mm filters? Thanks.
eBay
Why cant I brief with the filter?
what about the big one I opened the big cap at the top and it hissed so I closed it very quick . please get back to me ASAP mate . cheeres
That's probably air getting in after it was factory sealed, it's fine just keep it sealed for safety reasons.
OK thanks mate its just the fact I bought it from Ebay . but cheeres
