Faxanadu was incredible for the time it came out. Only issue is the horrendous save system. I had a notebook just FULL of those mantras. A couple secret ones too that had amazing maxed out gear.
This one's an absolutely kickass game. They took Diablo and somehow managed to make it fun. All it took was unique dungeon design and combat that doesn't rely entirely on 'haha numbers go up'. For people interested, I recommend simply playing the game with a gamepad and using mouse to navigate menus.
You just reminded me this game exists and i never played it. Then you said it is reminiscent FFT which happens to be my all time favorite game. Also found out it plays perfectly on Steam Deck. So just picked it up, Thanks so much for the video! Also of you love Ivalice games check out Vagrant Story is another amazing game that rarely gets any love.
My favorite key game of all key history, the most thrilling and exciting part of the game was finding keys while cutting grass, definitely one of my key rpg's in my collection, I love it.
I got a copy of this game and forgot why I had this game in the first place. Never got far in the game before, but now I watch your review makes me want to play it again and finish it. Thank you for reminding me.
I love this game, and I am stoked the UA-cam algorithm recommended your channel to me. I am stoked to see more dungeon crawler fans making awesome content, immediate sub!
Only 3 mins in and this game seems super up my street. Wishlisted. Also nice on the use of he Chained Echoes track! I'm nearing the end of that game and it's quickly become an all-time fave
What's that? The Homm II Grass Theme in a video about Xanadu Next? My friend, how can you combine two of my favorite ever games like that? Instant respect. In all seriousness, I love Xanadu Next so much. It feels like a fantasy game from a bygone era where things could be presented more simply and sincerely. It's kind of like White Lie in Black states and the general theme about The Knight's arc: he's the last true hero of that era, the last knight in that land who stands at the tuning of ages. It's melancholic but beautiful, just like you said, and captures just about everything I love in fantasy.
Exactly! And yeah, I love HOMM II and for some reason I found the grass theme so be strangely fitting in terms of vibes for this game. Cool to see someone felt the same :)
Played this game a couple of years ago and I really enjoyed it. Ngl I liked the clunky mouse controls and having to positioning yourself to enemys flanks and dungeon exploration was really fun for me too! This game just hit a certain sweet spot for me and I tried finding something else like it but couldn't lol
If you're looking for a game with a similar vibe and you haven't checked out Vagrant Story yet, definitely do! It's a bit more obtuse mechanics-wise but it definitely scratches that kind of itch.
Cool video ! Just wanted to mention I'm almost at the end of the game, and I had none of the bugs you encountered. Sometimes an enemy can spin in a corner due to pathfinding, but that's it. I'm playing the GOG version on Linux through Proton, and besides some weird Alt+Tab behavior, I'm having a great time !
I love this game! I really hope Falcom eventually makes another one in this style as I feel they could really use a more mature, less-anime series in their lineup. If you have access to a Playstation controller, using the touchpad as a mouse is another play style alternative. Also, the fairly basic graphics look pretty good with the right Reshade filters applied. A little ambient occlusion (or raytracing) gives it a nice bump.
If you enjoyed the feeling of this being almost in the style of an Ivalice game, do look for the 3DS exclusive (unfortunately) Crimson Shroud, which was designed by Yasumi Matsuno, of Ivalice fame. And of course if you have never dipped into his past games, there has never been a better time with Tactic Ogre: Reborn released on basically major system two years ago. That said this was a nice video on a game I love, hope you keep up the great work, it was very good to watch.
Oh absolutely, I played Tactics Ogre LUCT a couple of years ago and had a really good time with it. I have yet to play the remaster but I have heard mixed things about it. I'll definitely check out Crimson Shroud, thank you :)
@@GIoominary Honestly the problem with something like Tactics Ogre LUCT is that each version has some wildly changed mechanic, and so there is always a group who hate it and a group who love it that way and when they take feedback and change it again, it upsets more people but also pleases people who disliked the last revision. I liked the new one but I also disliked the PSP systems like group leveling and crafting, so take that how you will.
Played this gem when It got released on Steam long time ago, and it was a blast, I loved it to bits, the ambience, the music, the easy to pick gameplay, the fricking banger for final boss theme, everything is so well made yet still raw. It would be cool if Falcom could develop another game like this. Been a long time Ys fan and I just want more (I know there Legend of Heroes but that's too much dialogue for me to take haha)
"Well made yet still raw" is a very good way to put it, yeah. I think it's a very special game with a very special vibe and even though Ys kind of goes into a similar direction (and I love the series as well), it's not quite the same for me. As for Xanadu, Falcom seems to be more interested in continuing the "Tokyo Xanadu" series which is very very different afaik. But yeah, there's always hope. Falcom seems to be working on a series of remasters, maybe at some point, we'll get one of this game.
Thanks for the video! I was curious about Xanadu Next so this video gives a pretty good overview of the game, the UI kinda sucks but i rally like how the game looks, almost PS1 like graphics.
I feel like watching that movie now. It looks like one of those low budget spiritual films from the time period that may have included a pinch of drugs in the production budget.
I rememebr playing Xanadu Next years ago and loving it a lot. And I really hate how I hasn't been able to find another game that plays like it. It feels like the anti-Diablo to some extent, being far more methodical with its combat and less loot-focus. The closest I've found is V Rising. And its still doesn't play as much as I would like like it.
Oath in Felghana might scratch a similar itch. Oddly enough when someone pitched the game to me they compared it to not only Dark Souls, but Ico. With the wandering around and puzzles and slowly learning the mystery of the place you're in. And now that I think about it, Alundra also lives in a similar space. So maybe one of those if you haven't played them yet
Reading the title the lava area in dark souls came to mind and I was very curious " what does xanadu next have that connects it to that specific area in ds1?" , then I remembered that it was called lost Izalith , not Ivalice 🌀
brothers, i have a question when i face the second boss(the spider) i deal 1 damage only, ive seen many people having the same problem, but i haven found any solutions, does anyone know what should i do? ive seen playtroughs too and they with almost my same stats do +20dmg to the spider
Uhm, I don't remember too clearly but I'm fairly certain that I relied on magic in this fight. I know that I maxed out my proficiency level with my current weapon and enchanted it with something (I think lightning?) and also used spells. It was a tough fight though nonetheless.
Considering how I usually play these games I can almost guarantee I also spammed magic. I loved the magic system in this game and Astlibra. I was playing both around the same time but it's been about a year probably
Why not just use both methods? I often switch between controller and m+kb in individual games. Assuming the game is programmed correctly it should work fine. That being said, not all games are programmed correctly, some lock in the method of input.
That's probably the way to go, yes. I could imagine the game playing best on SteamDeck? You know, using the built-in controller for movement and combat and then using the trackpads for menu stuff.
I dont like the comment of “outdated graphics” Its irrelevant Dated graphics many times look muck worse then then the outdated This game graphics feel good Moo2 graphics feel good Moo3 graphics felt bad If it feels good Then its not outdated Even JA1 graphics that can be called outdated Feel better then JA3 graphics That overwhelmed with high quality detail Even diablo 1 graphics feel good today While diablo 3 … Settlers 2 graphics were perfect For the game While making it up to date with knight and stuff fell less appropriate Caravaner 2 graphics are limited But its almost perfect for the game Lords of realems 2 Its pixel art But perfect for the game Avorion .. its low pixle art But you almost dont feel graphics missing
Faxanadu for the nes is a must play. I still have my original copy
One of these days, I will
Word
ayy me too!!
Yes they do. I always remember Faxanadu for the NES.
Faxanadu was incredible for the time it came out. Only issue is the horrendous save system. I had a notebook just FULL of those mantras. A couple secret ones too that had amazing maxed out gear.
Thank you youtube algorithm for showing me this! And thank you for creating it Dungeorge.
and thank you for watching it
@@GIoominary I'm in the same boat, I just subscribed to your channel and gonna buy the game xD

Being PC only is gay as fuck though
Diablo 1 is fun.
Look up original Xanadu.
heeeey diablo's fun. i like xanadu next but honestly it doesnt hit the highs of diablo 2, lol
Nice!👍
Finally someone talked about it,XN is very underrated, almost like it was obscure games despite the Xanadu game is long running series like YS.
Thank you :) Yeah I was surprised to find so little content about this game on UA-cam. But then again, it is an obscure title for sure.
You just reminded me this game exists and i never played it. Then you said it is reminiscent FFT which happens to be my all time favorite game. Also found out it plays perfectly on Steam Deck. So just picked it up, Thanks so much for the video!

Yeah, absolutely. Vagrant Story might be my favorite game of all time at this point :D
My favorite key game of all key history, the most thrilling and exciting part of the game was finding keys while cutting grass, definitely one of my key rpg's in my collection, I love it.
best key game since kingdom hearts :D
when I realized you could hit a crate and then push another crate on top of a half-broken crate my brain exploded
Realizing this was possible took me longer than I'd like to admit 😅
More people need to play Xanadu Next. Thanks for bringing attention to it.
Cool thanks for talking about this. I was in the mood for an oldschool rpg I never heard of!
I got a copy of this game and forgot why I had this game in the first place. Never got far in the game before, but now I watch your review makes me want to play it again and finish it. Thank you for reminding me.
I love this game thank you for making this video

Faxanadu is pretty cool to play today. No nostalgia involved i didnt have it back then
Keep up the great work! I love your videos!
Thank you so much, I have a couple of ideas for the future :)

I couldn't agree more :) and thank you for these tips, I'll definitely try to play with a PS controller next time, that's an awesome idea.
How did you manage to apply ray tracing to the game? Sounds really cool
I'll subscribe, hoping you'll do videos on more true grid based dungeon crawlers. I feel like that is a genre that doesn't get enough coverage.
Wow surprised I never heard of this. I'm a huge Dark Cloud fan and the artstyle seems very similar.
Yeah I can see the resemblance but the games are really quite different.
Wow thank you for the recommendation i bought the game after watching this and am enjoying it 😊
Wow, that means a lot to me, really glad you like it

thank you thank you, I'll do my best :)
Been on the wishlist for awhile now. Might be a perfect Steam Deck game. Can do controller and mouse easily.
Haven't tried that myself yet but if that works, it would be amazing
I bought Xanadu Next when I was in Japan this summer... Also Faxanadu is one of my alltime favourite games.
Played this gem when It got released on Steam long time ago, and it was a blast, I loved it to bits, the ambience, the music, the easy to pick gameplay, the fricking banger for final boss theme, everything is so well made yet still raw. I missed this one when i was younger which is strange cause it looks right up my alley and im going to pick it up on pc.
yeah it's basically japanese diablo.
Thanks for the video! I was curious about Xanadu Next so this video gives a pretty good overview of the game, the UI kinda sucks but i rally like how the game looks, almost PS1 like graphics.
Falcom has another dark horse - "Zwei - The Ilvard Insurrection".
Great job on the video man! I feel like I need to give this game a shot
You got a subscribe
Yes, please do! And thank you so much, it's really appreciated :)
I hope this works on steam deck. It looks like the perfect handheld gem.
haven't tried that yet but it may be the definitive way to play this game
Man, i need to replay this game.
honestly, it's only been a couple of weeks since I finished it again but I feel the urge to go back to it already :D
this game reminds me SO MUCH of Ragnarok Online :O
That's an interesting connection...I can totally see where you are coming from with this
this game is epic
I have not heard of Xanadu. Nice
Next cover of the game. See that your channel is three vids in. Subbed, you should keep it up.
thank you, I'll try :D
Faxanadu and Astyanax are top tier
Love the Nes version of Faxanadu.
10:32 that background music sounds like a track from legend of mana
yup, that's the "nostalgic song" from Legend of Mana
Great game, combat's a little silly - takes getting used to, but it's still good.
Well now this was interesting. I think I'll subscribe just to see where it goes.
thanks, yeah I got some stuff planned for the future :)
I loved this game and first time i played it was 2020 and i coudnt get into YS series i dont know why
I really dig the Ys games as well but nothing comes close to this :)
Amazing video, hope you get more subs soon! >:3
That is so kind of you, thank you so much :)
I feel like watching that movie now. It looks like one of those low budget spiritual films from the time period that may have included a pinch of drugs in the production budget.
That's an idea I can get behind :D
What a great game man.
Trails is a lot like Xanadu really. Its a subseries of The Legend of Heroes which is itself another Dragon Slayer subseries
Ugh fine, I'll play Xanadu Next again
I rememebr playing Xanadu Next years ago and loving it a lot.

Awesome game
The camera turning gives me a headacha tho..
ua-cam.com/video/gGYNHn-i_fw/v-deo.html
The song of the hard to find Xanadu trailer
interesting.
I dont like the comment of “outdated graphics”
Its irrelevant
Dated graphics many times look muck worse then then the outdated
This game graphics feel good
Moo2 graphics feel good
Moo3 graphics felt bad
If it feels good
Then its not outdated
Even JA1 graphics that can be called outdated
Feel better then JA3 graphics
That overwhelmed with high quality detail
Even diablo 1 graphics feel good today
While diablo 3 …
Settlers 2 graphics were perfect
For the game
While making it up to date with knight and stuff fell less appropriate
Caravaner 2 graphics are limited
But its almost perfect for the game
Lords of realems 2
Its pixel art
But perfect for the game
Avorion .. its low pixle art
But you almost dont feel graphics missing
The title almost hurts to read.
Xanadu, being one of the first old-school trailblazers.
Being called a Lost Ivalice game.......
I don't call it that. I say it feels like that...to me. Also, I do talk about the legacy of Xanadu in the video.
