So there seems to be some confusion as to what I said in the voiceover. This channel is not changing, it will be here, I’m not changing it one bit. I see the need for these long instructional videos and I will be here for you each week! My plan is it to start an additional channel that will feature the same project but in a condensed format for people that don’t need or want the instruction. @@SpragueWoodturning I think a second channel would be quite popular for those who just want to see "the magic" happen. It would be ideal for those who just want to see a hunk of wood turn into an amazing work of art in a dozen minutes. I have noticed there are turners who quite successfully entertain their subscribers with witty banter, jokes, and antics (Nick Zammeti for example) but again, I think those turners are more focused on entertaining rather than instructing. I personally am not a wood turner, but I love watching it done. I am one of those strange people who enjoys learning things so I'm quite snug as a bug in a rug not only watching "the magic" happen, but also learning from you *how* it happened. I'm one of the weirdos who watches documentaries for fun. 😂 I love your channel and appreciate all your hard work and that you patiently explain so much. I also think your idea to start a second channel would do very well. (I managed to worm in a bug reference in honor of this video's project. 😉) As one of your American subscribers I'm especially looking forward to both your July 1st and 4th videos. 👍

I thought the distinction you made was clear. I like these long videos because the turning is so soothing to watch, and I love to see the beauty which emerges. The information is fine too, it's interesting. So I like the long ones for entertainment; and I suppose short versions would have an attraction for many people. Thanks!

My attention span is getting shorter but I watch your videos all the way through and thoroughly enjoy them. With the marvels of modern science people can always increase the speed up to two times should they wish. I am happy to sit quietly for forty minutes or so in awe watching a master at work 🌞

I am wood turner and look forward to the instructional videos with the discussion. Finding these while we were enduring COVID-19 was the one positive thing that came of it. Although my wife says haven’t you seen that one already. I am amazed that the ten minute format gets 1.2 million subscribers. It must as you said draw a different audience. You should try it.

Myrtlewood grows only in Oregon, USA, and in Israel. My father-in-law bought Myrtlewood burls in OR and made wall clocks out of them. Used up a ton of Varethane to coat them. $$$$.

Sir, I enjoy your videos exactly as they are. That said, per your question around the 20min mark, I'm an analytics person, and like your idea about the 2nd channel. Let me recommend, a potentially simple solution. All of your pieces are great and you currently do a lot of video editing (speeding things up, talk overs, etc. ), which is all very informative and helpful to the aspiring turner', but may dissuade some watching for ASMR purposes. Therefore, rather than having to create separate content for each channel, just provide two separate edits. This channel (like it is, or shorter to target a different audience), and the other would include all that footage that currently either speeds by (i.e. minus the time lapse), ends up on the cutting room floor, or has speak - overs. Analytics suggest a large media market in ASMR related engineering and hand-made craftsmanship.
Again, I enjoy your videos currently, but you probably have the footage you need already to appeal to/target a potentially larger audience. 👍 keep up the good work!!
I shot this video sometime ago and seriously debated putting the two videos on my channel but thought people might get confused. This is why I thought of starting a totally different channel for the faster condensed videos. Thanks for your input! Jim

I really like the voiceover that you do. You answer the questions I have. I find your videos enriching. I can see the value of short videos for the viewers who are not interested in the full process of how or why something is created. There is also something cathartic about watching something being created with or without ASMR. I am guilty of skipping over portions in other videos where the presenter strays off topic or when random movie clips or other platforms are in inserted. I tend to avoid the channels that do that.
This is exactly what I was talking about, that’s the type of viewer I want to attract. I will always do the longer ones, I now see a need for it! Thanks 😊
Additional option on wormy wood (if solid) is to turn the bowl, and remove the surface frass with air, brush, and/or pick. Then brush or paint a fast resin on in stages to fill the now cleaned surface holes. Still takes time, but uses less resin. I heat treat my wood or run it through the pressure pot dry to make sure the bugs are dead. Give the short option vids a try and see how they are received. May not be worth the extra editing time, but then you will know! 10-20 is my preferred, unless it is a step by step which requires more full detail. Btw, bowl turned out great.

I think the second channel is a great idea. Personally not a wood turner or necessarily interested in the details, but I do enjoy to watch things being made, and also find the sounds soothing. If you do another channel I wouldn't speed things up and i would make the sound of the work being done as clear as you can. I follow some "restoration" channels for similar reasons. ASMR for many.

I’m not interested in woodworking myself, I just like watching the beautiful art you create. Myself, I enjoy the voice over. You get to hear/learn so much, especially about the types/figures of wood prior to the project. Yo also get snippets about the person themselves which draws the viewers in and make them apart of the channel by getting to know you. I get lost in watching all the steps so I’m oblivious of the vid length, I like the content exactly as it is. I’ve been binging your channel since YT suggested it, never knew/realized this type of vids were out there.

Another wonderful bowl. Filling the wormholes with resin was a great idea. The video length is just right. I watch the woodturning videos for relaxation to see how it's done and how the bowl is made. Short videos aren't that relaxing because you have to be attentive all the time. Then this is not relaxation. :)

Great result. As for video length - I often go for shorter videos, but there's a few channels where I watch the longer videos cuz I know I'm guaranteed to learn something - yours is one of those. To me, it's worth the extra time - I just watch them when I'm in a position to dedicate the time and maybe make some notes.

Hey, I watch a lot of turning videos, like a real lot. I prefer the instructional channels that explain and talk about what they are doing along the way. A lot of the channels I subscribe to do have multiple channels, or a repeat of videos on the same channel for a faster and less talking version. Its a good idea to give the viewer a choice. For myself, I am a turner and I like to pick up tips and tricks and also inspiration to work on things myself, hence I watch full videos. But there are also going to be people that just want to see a quick demonstration of how the project went from log to beautiful art in a quick process. So, I think second channel is a great idea for that. But please keep doing these full ones, I watch every minute of them.
On another note, I found when using wood with bug holes like this, pouring the resin and then vacuuming it for 10 minutes or so works much better than just the pressure pot like you did here. The vacuum chamber sucks all the air out of the bug holes and makes the resin replace it. Once vacuumed then you still put it in the pressure pot after for it to set. Vacuum chambers are pretty cheap and I find mine invaluable for my projects.

I like the voiceover because I’m very interested in wood turning. Am I ever going to do wood turning? No. I’m old, I watch these videos and one other guy only because I love the process and the finished masterpiece.
As for this wood… I can’t seem to see the color of the resin soaked in any of the wormholes!

Neat looking piece with the resin in the bug holes. I understand that some may like to see shorter versions but I like the longer instructional videos myself. Glad to hear you will continue making them. I always wait until I have time to watch them all the way through.

Interesting project! I'm not a turner, just a want-to-be, vicariously enjoying the art, through your videos! You know better than I, how much I've save in buying a lathe and cutting tools, this way!! LOL!! Surprised you say, 2-3 good cuts and then needing to sharpen tool again!! That's an extremely short live span on your tools edge!! Especially interesting, watching you is, I'm left handed too!! Didn't realize it made a difference!! I'm liking the details of, how-to explained!! Think, if folks want to see end results, they'll just fast forward through to end!! Great looking bowl and finish work!! NO!! It's ART!!! Not used for salad!!
It’s not easy being a lefthand turner, all the tools are made for righties, if your great with both hands then your fine. The 20” General I work on has lefthand threads on the outboard end so you can stand in front of the work comfortably and do our left handed awesomeness, lol. Carbide is where it’s at when dealing with theses resin/wood combos. The Hercules is an awesome tool and highly recommended it. Thanks 🙏
