When you look at it with the light in it, it looks like a misty morning in the woods, sun coming up and everything is just peaceful. Simply love it!
Thank you very much!
Well said - it does indeed!
@@SpragueWoodturningHi what is a hollow turning like this worth?
Agreed! Makes me want to sit in front of it under a blanket, thick wool socks, and a cup of hot chocolate and watch it while it spins. It's calming.
What I like about this at 10:45 is you had a disaster and recovered. Half of "crafting" is being clever and resilient enough to recover from mistakes.
Thank you very much!
Like you’ve said, these projects are sometimes unpredictable and they speak to you as you’re creating. That’s what’s so awesome about this craft! I love this piece! 🎉❤
Thank you very much!
This project is beautiful. There are faces and eyes in the wood. I watch these videos to calm my stress and I've learned to cast them to my TV. I'm in Birmingham, Alabama. My father hand carved wood projects when I was a small child. Your addition of the resin makes such beautiful effects in these pieces. I had hoped this would be a bowl. Maybe another time.
Thanks for watching!
It is so wonderful how each piece of wood has its own beauty and character. What a great way to see different examples of the burl. Also, I was thinking you could have made a large container with a lid that would have had all of the raw ends on the lid. However, I'm unsure how it would have looked on the sides. As it is, it is so very pretty. Love your work!!
I debated doing that too. Thanks
Lovely hollow form with very imaginative use of burl pieces. I think that black (or any dark) resin really highlights the striking, complex grain of the burl. Would be interesting to see a hollow form made with the burl cutoffs fit higgledy-piggledy into the mold without further cutting.
What I appreciate most about these videos is that you take the viewer on a kind of journey. None is exactly the same. You explain why you do what you do and what, if anything, you might do differently next time. As a retired teacher, I appreciate that open, pragmatic approach, and the results are beautiful.
This is how our military trains it’s soldiers to teach, explain, demonstrate, imitate. Thank you very much!
I was skeptical in the beginning, but the geometry in the finished piece is impressive!! I love the resin color!!!
Thank you!
This is probably the first project with straight lines that I don't feel meh about. Really like the epoxy and wood contrast.
Thanks again!
I do love that burl! Was surprised that there was not a distinct line where the original pour ended--good job blending that, and loved the yellow/pumpkin effect. Very nice!
Thank you very much!
From the Sprague School of Advanced Woodturning: Sound Effects Division - it is vital to have a horse sound in your repertoire in order address those tough-to-solve problems! I too was shocked when you revealed how much resin had been absorbed in the first casting but your solution turned out wonderful! Thanks, Jim!!
I’m lucky if I can even speak English some days, haha. Thanks
It's wonderful seeing how much you can make from the scraps but they still have so much beauty left in them for you to create this project. 100k coming up and I am very happy for you. Congratulations to you. Well earned!
Thank you so much!
"handsome" is the adjective that comes to my mind for this piece. I looked for but didn't see spikes on top. So well done. I'm waiting for this channel to break 100K!
The resin was tinted just a little to dark for it to show. Thanks
Been binge watching your videos! Love your projects! You're so consistent in how committed you are to overcome unexpected issues.
Max flex, lol. Thanks
Waste not, want not! It is awesome that very little of that beautiful wood goes to waste! Thanks for sharing
My thoughts exactly, thanks!
Beautiful piece Jim. I still love that moment when you put the first coat of finish on and they spring to life!
Me too! Thank you very much!
I agree - best part!!
I'm impressed that there wasn't a witness line. Your technique took care of that problem.
Thank you very much!
Hi 👋 , Jim , I hope you are all keeping safe and well, Glad to hear 👂, that the fires have died down in your region, Last weekend, I was watching a couple that are driven up from the USA into Canada to visit some lakes where they were going to do mountain, climbing and trials bike riding , and obviously showing the beautiful scenery that you have up in Canada. They ended up having to come back because of the fires., . Great looking piece of art as per usual., a good way to get rid of your offcuts, And they were obviously very thirsty, 😂. Question Jim, if he’s all the forms or anything that is made out of resin and wood and put in direct sunlight so you like in a window with a distort with heat from coming in from the Sun., and cause problems. You were mentioning about your tailgate stock quill, not being long enough. I had a problem similar , I end up buying engineers tailstock, and I had to make a new pad for it to fit my lathe, I made a wooden plug, then took that to an iron foundry where they poured a casting of the plug I made, then took it to the machine shop and had them copy my original tailstock base , and fit it on to the base of the engineering tailstock, the quill on this was approximately 6 inches,
Great that you managed to find a laser sight for a gun, obviously one of your project to do very soon,
Great, looking hollow form , I’m definitely looking forward to the day when I can attempt this process, as I think you turn out amazing pieces of art. Stay safe, I look 👀 forward to seeing your next project, Phil from the moulin France.
Designer Epoxy does have UV inhibitors in it, but it’s best to not leave it in the sun. A thicker piece may do better but epoxy is essentially a plastic and it certainly can warp if it’s left in a window and exposed to a lot of heat. Thanks
@@SpragueWoodturning , Hi 👋 Jim , i hope you all had a great weekend, thank you for your reply, It was very strange I was looking 👀 back at Blacktail studio, he makes river tables, another pieces of furniture, use an epoxy resin, about 9/10 months ago, poured a slab of resin, then made a form jig, plant the slab of resin to it, which was radiused and took it out into the Sun, and the heat from the Sun, softened the slab of resin and managed to bend it into a curve where he made a coffee table, I should’ve realised in some respect that plastics will bend under heat,
I’ve been removing and cutting logs up out of the river over the last two weeks , could be some interesting pieces for Woodturning,
I was hoping to go out today and finish moving and cutting up some logs , but I got woken up this morning around 4:30 5 o’clock time. Traffic thunderstorm heavy rain, so I think that put paid to my working outside today, I think we can definitely say that climate is changing dramatically, as you’ve got places in the world that I’ve got terrible fires, and you have had, some parts of Europe I’ve got very bad fires as well and they got places like China that I’ve got torrential rain and properties houses factories are all been washed away, I even saw something last night where there was a 40 foot container. Lorry been washed down the streets over into, I think was a river it disappeared. I know that,
I hope you are keeping safe, Phil from the moulin France.
@@SpragueWoodturning Hi 👋, There is something came up on reply to me that doesn’t look right, it looks like your logo, when you click on it, it doesn’t go through to your website or your UA-cam channel, not sure whether this is a scam, as I have seen something similar to it before.
Phil from the moulin France
Designer Epoxy in the right hands never fails. Great job of eliminating the witness lines.
Thank you very much!
First time catching the live. As always your knowledge of your materials and skill of you craft continues to shine every time you need to adjust your plan. Stunning as usual
Thank you! Cheers!
With the light I feel like I am in a dark woods and the sun is just coming up for the day. Love it.
Thank you very much!
I'm so impressed with your creativity. You sometimes get lemons and yet you make excellent lemonade! Love this one!
Thank you very much!
Another beautiful 'happy accident'. I was totally gobsmacked at how the level of resin dropped, but you managed to overcome adversity and pull it out of the hat yet again! Have a great weekend Jim.
Thank you very much!
It’s nice to see that even professionals make mistakes and have the stones to show them even after editing. A great original idea that I’ll try at some point in the future using Designer Epoxy Deep Cast
Thank you very much!
OUTSTANDING save after the loss of the Designer Epoxy following the first pour. End result was beautiful.
Thank you very much!
The black Designer Epoxy goes so well with the grain. It kind of looks like it could be an antique.
Totally, thanks!
I’m always glad when a turner, such as yourself, goes back and reuse the scraps from other projects, especially burls. It must be my Prairie roots. We’re known for our frugally. Lol
I really love your hollow forms. Don’t know what their uses are, but their pretty anyways.
I just realized that half your pieces over the past six weeks have been hollow forms. I’m not complaining, they turned out great, but the form is relatively the same.
Designer Epoxy.
There just meant to be art pieces. Thanks
The light gives the illusion of being filled with magic. ❤
It is, lol. Thanks
I wasn't sure, but watching the whole video, yes, it grew on me, and I love what you have done ❤
Thank you very much!
it is a really good testament to Designer Epoxy that there was not a witness line in the 2 pours using 2 different types of Epoxy Deep cast, and Art cast. it is a good way to use all the usable wood in a log especially when some of it can be hard to get, great job.
Totally agree! Thank you very much!
I really like how it looks lit up because you can really see the yellow and orange! Very nice project once again. Designer epoxy for the win!
Thanks a bunch!
Yet another hollow form? You're spoiling me! These, the vases and the urns are always my favorites!
The colors and the wood are so gorgeous on this one too! I love black resin pieces almost as much as clear resin ones
Thank you very much!
Designer Epoxy. It is always wonderful seeing the works of art that come out of these pieces.
Thank you! Cheers!
Designer epoxy. Fantastic use of “scraps” of burl. I love the effect of this piece.
Thank you! Cheers!
And, you did it again, with the old Designer Epoxy🏁
Thank you very much!
I’m glad you were able to blend the second pour into the first Designer Epoxy.
Me too! Thanks
Hi Jim the different pieces of wood has great grain and spalting. The hollowform vase is magnificent and really unique I like the fact you can see through it when there is light behind it. Gladvyoumare safe from the fires and that the rain has arrived for some relief of smoke from fire. Please take care and stay safe. Amanda xx
Many thanks!
Morning coffee always tastes better with Jim!
You got that right! Lol. Thanks
I don't know much about wood turning, your work is completely amazing
Thank you very much!
A gorgeous, very atmospheric piece when the light is inside. A great way to display its full beauty!
Couldn't agree more! Thanks
Spectacular!!! It was a blessing in disguise when it drank up so much epoxy in that 1st pour.
Great idea on how to use up 'scrap' pieces of burl.
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow that burl looks fantastic in the colors you choose for the designer epoxy
Thank you! Cheers!
I'd love to apprentice with you, your vases and other projects are too beautiful to describe..🥰 it's like tie died, until it's all done and the pattern emerges then you see the beauty you randomly made.
Thank you very much!
The sides are very nice, especially the wide piece of wood. Shows the grain beautifully.
Thank you very much!
LET’S GROOOOOOW can we all share and get Jim & Sprague Woodturning to 100K subs by September !!!
If one skipped the beginning of this project, they would never know you didn’t do this on purpose. Love the result ~Smile oN
Thank you very much! I really appreciate it!
This one is so fascinating! It turned out great, I think I could spend a long time just staring at it looking for the details. Thanks for another wonderful vid!
Thank you so much!
Another winner. Wood and resin that gives the feeling of all wood. Much as I love clear bright colors, this piece exudes class. ❤
Thank you very much!
Wow! When I grow up I want to be like Jim. Masterful turner. Another beautiful piece.
Wow, thank you!
That bucket is awesome, it released the project twice in a row! I think you’ve finally found your perfect bucket material (there may be other shapes you want)
Thank you very much!
Been watching for awhile & love what you do! I’m not a wood turner but get great satisfaction watching you create. And living down here in the South, I love hearing you say “out” & “about”! I hope that I can afford one of your pieces at some point. I have a far greater appreciation for the cost when you see how much work & product goes into each one. I’m right handed, but completely understand your “left handed” brain. Keep up the wonderful creativity!
Wow, thank you!
Algorithm, algorithms, algorithms, algorithmus all the algors…
This hollow form turned out awesome! Nice work. When I fist saw it come out of the second casting I thought it would look really cool as a bowl with a lid because the tops of the burl sticks are so cool and you’d get to see it twice. Once on the lid and then wen you take the lid off. 100k coming up!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I did really debate making a lidded dish of some sort. Thanks again!
Well Jim I had a crap day and turn your video on to cheer myself up. My takeaway from this one is you taking what most would term a mistake and using it to add depth and beauty to the piece. Thank you, I needed that message!
Glad I could help, thanks
I love how the black resin really brought out the texture of the burl!
Thank you very much!
It's incredible that scraps of wood can be made into something ao beautiful and artistic. Great job!
Thank you very much!
Love the way that you use the waste and always manage to make something amazing
Thank you very much!
I just sat down to finally watch this weeks video. I just poured epoxy over a very cracked piece of cherry silver black… I had to laugh. I’m sure your project will be far superior!
Thank you very much!
I love any project that uses boxelder burl, it is a beautiful wood. The dark epoxy looked very nice with the lite colored burl. Take care
Thank you very much!
Designer Epoxy
What a unique hollow form! Very, very beautiful & well done.
Thank you very much!
Jim. Love the Box Elder burl crowns showing through the Designer Epoxy on the top of the hollow form. Great decision !!
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful looking hollow form. Great way to use the scrap pieces of burl. Take care and stay safe Jim.
Thanks, you too!
Really different look with this one and I'm liking it. Someone said something about a forest and I agree wholeheartedly!
Thank you very much!
Beautiful Idea, turned into something beautiful. Designer Epoxy even looks good in black
Thank you very much!
I love it. It is very unique and very beautiful. Watching this is the highlight of my day. Whatever day it is that I get to watch them.
Thank you so much 😀
Yes, I would love it Jim, should be ecstatic with that. I like the metric conversion Jim gives us Aussies an idea what you have made.👍
Thanks 👍
Shining the light inside always give a unique view of the piece. Great job of disguising the second pour.
Thank you very much!
I started out thinking I wouldn't like it BUT as always you knocked it out of the park!
Thank you very much!
What a beautiful piece. That Designer Epoxy sure got sucked up. I love the strips of burl wood. It makes the hollow form look so cool!
Thank you very much!
Part of the reason I like this type of video is seeing how your methods differ from mine and where they're surprisingly similar.
I'm a machinist, and everything I cut is steel of one variety or another, yet there are moments where I'm like "Hey, that's almost exactly how I do that!" Of course, the other side of that coin is that often there will be things where I wish steel were so easy to work with or ones where I'm glad steel isn't so tempermental.
Both materials have there pluses and minuses, I’ll stick with wood, lol. Thanks!
That’s amazing how thirsty that burl was. Turned out great, I like it better with a splash of color.
It sure was! Thanks
Another beauty! The spalting is gorgeous....natures paintbrush!
Thank you! Cheers!
Full of character is right. Another amazing piece! Great job!
Thank you very much!
Very Nice. Like the Wood and the resin colors together. I like Hollow Forms. Have a wonderful and blessed Weekend and week. Until the next one. Be safe and well
Thank you! You too!
Dear Jim, ok, it was made out of cut-offs but it looks great, even if the first pouring didn't work specifically so well... but you rescued the piece with DESIGNER EPOXY and turned it into another beautiful piece of art! I love that and I love that bowl! Many greetings and a nice weekend from Wuppertal, Germany, yours, Wolfgang.
Thank you! Cheers!
I thought you might have hollowed it and cut the top off to be a lid and make a burl knob to fit in the hole opening. You are terrific at making modifications when the epoxy turns out differently than you expect. Great job!
I debated that as well. Thanks
Designer Epoxy! What a beautiful piece!
Thank you! Cheers!
Designer epoxy. Another gorgeous piece.
Thanks again!
Two hollow forms in a row - score! thanks.
You bet! Thanks
I find I don't normally gravitate towards pieces where you can see the square ends, I prefer irregular, more "natural" shapes, but the top of this reminds me a bit of ancient pavers or tiles being reclaimed by the earth around them, and when lit up it has this ethereal air that I just love! I didn't expect to like this as much as I do!
Another fantastic job on the recast too Jim, a beautiful transition of colours, particularly gorgeous when lit from the inside 💜💜💜
Thank you very much!
As usual…stunning! When you said black I thought hmmm… maybe… when you said yellow I thought Nooo! However… it’s amazing! Stay safe!
Thank you very much!
Holy cow was that some thirsty wood!
Your idea of including more of the black before adding the red and yellow seems to have worked out really well, I couldn't see a registration line either in the light or the underlit dark.
Thank you very much!
Looks great! But I like everything you've done. Whoever bought that vase from last week is a very lucky person.
Thank you very much!
Another great hollow form. Love the light peaking through.
Thanks again!
Love the look with the lights on the inside.
Thank you very much!
I agree. That box alder burl is stunning. Looks like sunset in the forest. Fires are over here in Halifax, then we had flooding.
Yes, one extreme to another. Thanks
You are magic with the Designer Epoxy.
Thank you very much!
Designer epoxy. I am just getting started with epoxy. I enjoy your videos been watching for a while now. I hape to save money and time by watching how you do it😮
Awesome, thank you!
Great use of off cuts. Never want to waste burl.🙂
Thank you very much!
I love the spalting that a couple of those pieces of burl have. I had my doubts with this project, I can’t lie, but it *turned* out beautifully.
Edit: explanation; my doubts were more personal taste than any objectively valid concerns. (I’m not the biggest fan of hollow forms)
Thank you very much!
Fantastic save with the blending. The sparkles, pumpkin and yellow help to make it stand out.
Yes! Thank you!
I really wasn’t sure about this one when you started it but I am converted, another stunning piece!!
Thank you very much!
This makes me think of a fireplace and a cup of hot chocolate. I think it should sand near a fireplace. So beautiful. Again!
Thank you very much!
Jim, awesome job on the resin pour! I like the fact that so much of the orange and lemon moved towards the bottom👏
Gotta love that burl 😃
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
It’s beautiful Jim. I love to see ribbons of resin streaming off the piece, except when it’s me that’s getting covered in it. 🌞
You and me both! Lol. Thanks
"Designer Epoxy" Nice job Jim. Love watching you work on resin projects. Wish I had a lathe.... Lots of work but must be so enjoyable.
It certainly is, thanks
Designer epoxy. What a fantastic piece. The top is stunning. 😊
Thanks so much 😊
Lemon’s into lemonade! Really nice looking piece Jim.
Thank you very much!
The looks turned out way better than I could of imagined. Beautiful just beautiful
Thank you very much!
I love this piece, glad you decided on a hollow form.
Thank you!
Designer Epoxy
Nice use of scraps. Thanks.
Glad you like it!
That was an amazing recovery, after the first pour absorbed so much more than expected!
Thank you!
Designer epoxy and burl! Love it!
The best! Thanks
