      Here in Indy, I see at least as many 02-06 CR-Vs as I do 97-01 CR-Vs, maybe even more. My mom has an '04 CR-V that was purchased used with 78k miles in '11 from someone that I used to go to high school with. The car had been in 1 accident prior to my mom purchasing it. My mom wrecked it a few months after she bought it, but got it fixed. She broke the driver's side mirror last year, and I replaced it. She's recently broke the passenger's side mirror, too, which still needs to be replaced.
      Yet after all that, it runs very well with 132k on it now. Other than the A/C compressor, it's been a very reliable beater--it has a smoother transmission than my '11 Accord, which just hit 100k! Gas mileage could be better, though (18 city / 22-24 highway).
      I had a friend that also had an '04 CR-V, but his had the 5-speed manual. Had at least 200k miles (or even 250k; it's been a few years), and it still ran beautifully.

    Just a short story: My GF's '95 CR-V which we bought together came without A/C, we could not find a car that did. But I did not leave it at that. I went to a scrapyard and pulled some parts from a totaled CR-V. Lines, evap, some wiring, relays, A/C control panel everything but the pump. Never done this before. Installed, pressure tested it, vacuumized the system and filled it up. It was a late sweaty summer evening and the moment the cool air came from the vents I knew it would be worth it in the long run. Still works good after 1.5 years. Go Honda. Next project is to install a cyl head from a GSR (b18c4) and make it a vtec.

What an awesome little car, I'll never forget the first day I drove to school, without anybody in the car with me. I took it to my first job, and to my first college semester. It wasn't exciting to drive, but it was very dependable. It always started up and drove to where I needed to be. I'll always be fond of these things for being my first big taste of freedom.

      A coworker bought one used around 2005. The original owner led him on a Doug DeMuro type tour of all it's quirks and features, never mentioned it. He had it for three more years before he figured out there was a table.
      I guess he read about it in the owner's manual, but figured it was an optional cover that went across level with the top of the seats. Sort of like a privacy cover in some station wagons and SUVs. It didn't occur to him it was built into the floor.

You can tell they are reliable because most will have easily over 300,000kms and still are worth over $3000. the manual transmission ones go for more. I have a 1999 Honda CR-V. It’s traveled all over the us. Bought on the east cost and now has it’s home in New Mexico. Believe it or not it is a 5 speed manual, awd with all original engine/ drivetrain and she has 459,000 miles on it. I have the valves adjusted every year and change oil religiously every 3k miles. You get out of a car what you put in, especially a Honda. What an amazing vehicle

    • @dauwg99
      @dauwg99 6 років тому

      Angelo Herrera2236 that's awesome. how often do u do the belts? And how much does the valve adjustment cost?

    • @AngeloHerrera-ow3po
      @AngeloHerrera-ow3po 6 років тому +2

      Douglas Au I replace the belts pretty often although admittedly I do not know the exact Milage. I just look for cracks in the belts and if I see any sign of wear I change it. I install a gates timing belt every 90k and as for the valve adjustment I do it myself, but considering the valves aren’t crazy out of whack it shouldn’t realistically run you more than 100. But the worse the valves, more labor= more money. It just depends. Preventative maintenance is best.

    • @dauwg99
      @dauwg99 6 років тому

      That's not too bad at all! Damn, I wish I could learn how to adjust the valves myself. Sounds like a lot of precision work and tools. Sorry, I meant the timing belt. Every 90k sounds perfect. I'm thinking about getting a 1998 with 160,000 miles, but last timing belt was at 100,000 miles. Sounds like it is due for a service. Super clean, but the engine bay looks kinda dirty...you think that's a bad sign?

    • @BRField
      @BRField 5 років тому

I have done brakes once, timing belt (and water pump) at 122,000 , valve adjustment, replaced both the clutch and brake masters, replaced driver side wheel bearing assembly, and proper maintenance otherwise. That is danged good I think. These are fine automobiles. Why do companies cease building good vehicles? Oh, I use the table occasionally.

    I have a 1999 EX. It was my parents car until they picked up a newer CRV. Its been great for all those Michigan winters. The only bad thing is all the years of salt corrosion has done a toll. Every peice I've had to replace was because of salt corrosion. Brake lines rusted, panels rusting, etc. I'm actually in the middle of changing out my radiator, which isn't so bad considering its been 18 years. Luckily replacement parts are cheap so long as you don't buy it from Clear Lake Honda.
    My driver side inside door handle did suddenly snap though. Honda of Clear Lake wanted $80 for it. Luckily you can find it online for about $5-$10 .

    My family used to have a 2001 CR-V SE with Realtime 4WD (actually AWD) up until July 2013. It was a great vehicle, since my mom drove it to work. Now we have the 2014 Forester Touring with EyeSight, which has a similar layout as the first-generation CR-V on the dash, except the shifter and the brand new gadgets.

    • @ThisGuyRides
      @ThisGuyRides 8 років тому +1

      Realtime 4WD is not AWD at all. It is front WD normally to conserve gas, and only if front drive wheel slips power is sent to opposite side rear wheel. So at the most only 2 wheels get power.

    My friend has taken ownership of his parents old 98 RV and has been on countless long trips without ever missing a beat. I always refer the comfort of the ride not being a million miles off a classic Rolls Royce, especially for the total weight of the RV. She's on 210k i believe.

    in 2000 the crv added seats that convert into beds, basically you move the front seat all the way forward and tilt the back rest all the way back till its flat , on the rear seat you push the side lever that can be seen when you open the door on the side cushion, pull that till it tilts the seat up slightly and then pull on the knob to move the rear back rest as far back as it will go, and there ya go, you have a bed.

    I have never owned a CRV of any vintage but I have to say that there are still a lot of the early versions on the road in 2018, more so than the RAV4 or anything made by the domestic brands. It’s quite impressive actually, makes me think the vehicle was over engineered (which is a good thing!)

    • @a3dstorm

      I bought a 2001 GT AWD CR-V 3 years ago that had 180 000 km on it, only thing I had to do on it is regular maintenance (oil change), replaced the battery, exhaust and recently replaced the driver's side window regulator. I paid it cash, spent about 800$ in repairs in 3 years, I do my own repairs, so that saves money. But this is the most reliable car I ever owned and I've owned a couple new cars before. Except for the rusted rear fenders, The car has less rattles than any new or slightly used Dodge or Chrysler for sure. Almost anything on this thing can be fixed with just lubrication or cleaning. I had the brake light come on during winter, it's was only the float in the master cylinder sticking on, a little wiggle up and down, problem solved. I had problems with the passenger side door lock not always locking, removing the door panel, lubricated the motor and putting it back together, problem solved. You tube is your friend when it comes to fixing the CR-V but it's quite easy to fix compare to other newer cars if you are mechanically incline. With the harsh winters we have here in Quebec, I will try to keep and maintain this car for as long as I can. Next summer, I will get the rusted fenders fixed. The only splurge I made on the car was to install a Pionneer Carplay compatible radio headunit. I think even if the car is 17 years old, I still deserve a little ' modern technology' in my daily driver. This is by far my favorite car I have ever owned, My previous car was a new 2009 Suzuki SX4 5 speed AWD that I absolutely hated the whole 5 years I had it. I've owned a brand new Jeep YJ 1992, The CRV has the much better AWD system for daily use in the snow, You'll never get stuck anywhere or ever have to take out the shovel to get out of your parking spot. I wish I had bought this CRV brand new, I think it would have been the first and last new car I ever bought, if I had bought one brand new it would surely be in a better shape than the one I bought 3 years ago. But still, a testament to what the first gen CR-V were. This is how reliable most car should be. Not the exception.
