  • Ginny Buckley gives us an in-depth review of the 1997 Honda CRV, and finds out if it's the ultimate all round vehicle. Honda has called this car the CRV, which stands for - Compact Recreational Vehicle, and it is designed for people who have an active lifestyle. Although the CRV has 4x4 capabilities, it is not a dedicated off-road car. It uses a dual pump system which lets it drive using only it's front wheels, but when required it can switch to 4-wheel drive on the fly. Ginny test drives the CRV to see how it performs and handles on the road, as well as seeing how practical and spacious it is.

I bought one for my teenage son. When he got tired of it and wanted something sportier I intended to sell it. Then, I started using it for weekend grocery runs and it just grew on me. It just feels like a trusted friend that will go anywhere and do anything. These cars are just too good to sell for a couple thousand dollars.

Bought my 97 CRV with 99,000 miles in 2005. Now 16 years later it has 250,000 and drives like a dime. The engine is bullet proof. Well made and road with in the bad elements like deep snow here. Every CRV owner I've talked to loved theres. It's truly a great car to drive.

I own one of this things. 1998. Right Now in a trip around south America up to now 25000km done in 7 months. Paved and lot of unpaved roads, 4x4 trails, mud , sand, rocks, rivers crossing, nights with -25celcius .. I sleep in the car. I cook in the car. Not a single problem. For the price and age and cost of maintenance this is the best car ever made. It does not run fast, 110km/h is a good speed but to save gas I go at 70km/h... but there is no rush!. Mine is automatic, cruise control would be perfect.

Just bought one for $2000 a couple months ago. Green EX 5-speed. She needs some work and some love, but that engine just wants to keep going. late 90s babies like myself grew up watching these things roll around, so there's something oddly nostalgic about owning one. Gonna keep this thing on the road as long as I can.

I had mine since 2008, I'm the second owner, I bought it from a car auction, changed all the old parts, but maintained the original "red" color, stock engine parts, tires & mags. It still Feels brand new after all these years . With little maintenance 😍 This car never disappoints me up until now. Honda crv 1st gen is one of the coolest and strongest cars for me to drive.

Bought a used 1998 5 years ago for my daily driver. Currently at 125,000 miles. Had new brakes put on, timing belt replaced and all fluids replaced. Since then it needed a ignition switch, water pump and radiator and also had some hoses replaced. I noticed the brake lights staying on one evening and was able to UA-cam to find and fix the problem. Not a great ride compared to bigger cars I used to drive but it gets me where I'm going.

I have a 1998 CR-V. At 19 years it has only 122k miles, which is about 6k miles/year. It still has the original exhaust system and I replaced the brakes once. It's been a great car, but the ride has never been the best thing about it. With the poor state of the roads today I bought a replacement for it two weeks ago. I bought a Lexus RX for the smooth ride. It's ten years old with 80k miles on it. I only drive 3k miles a year now so I expect this one to last me forever.

I got an 2000 model, EX with all goodies, leather upholstery, a huge sunroof and 4WD. I just can say that it is a great practical and easy to life with car. It has good performance off road, in bad roads, trails and crossing not too deep rivers and creeks.
If you learn about that car, you'll find out there is a universe of mods and stuff you can add and do to make it even better. The engine is made to last and it might not be the fastest car in the highway, but it will certainly go wherever you want to go comfortably and safe.

Not a dumb question at all. You actually could! If you look up along the lines of “RD1/2/3” or “Fullmark CRV” you can find old Japanese/European brochures that show all the funky accessories you could get with these! You could get things like the shower, a tent, and a really sweet 90’s aesthetic ski rack plus a ton more, I hope this helped a little bit 🤙🏻

    I recently acquired a 1997 Honda CR/V, here is what I found that I don’t like.
The cup holders are too shallow to securely hold coffee cups and water bottles without falling over all the time.
The sun visors are really chintzy.
The driver’s seat is awful for anyone over 5’ 10”.
The accelerator pedal is way too touchy.
Otherwise the fit and finish is excellent and the car is very reliable.

And the X-trail was released 3 years after the CRV. It would want to be 'better' given the amount of time Nissan had to copy the design and refine it. Funny thing is, I still see a ton of first generation CRVs on the road in 2020 but hardly any first generation X-trails even though they are 3 years younger. I wonder why that is?
