Sapphire Pulls Back! Another extreme...

- Our training was progressing well, and each day, I would tie Sapphire to the railing at the washing bay and she would stand relaxed and let me give her a good wash down. Unfortunately, a couple of days ago, for some unknown reason, she threw her head up when some water got close to her face and she pulled back until she pulled the slack out of the line. She freaked out and panicked. She was violently shaking her head, sitting down, slipping, rearing.... and it happened a few times in quick succession. She finally managed to stay still for a few moments for me to be able to untie the rope. Th next day, she did the same again, this time she was not hard tied to the railing, so she bolted backwards and flipped over, almost knocking her self out on the concrete. We had an extreme case on our hands.
In this video, I show you how I go about explaining to Sapphire what halter pressure on the back of her head means, and help her understand that she has the ability to create that pressure, and also to release that pressure herself, and therefore, get rid of the panic response that she had developed.

I’ve heard that once a horse has ever had a very bad experience of “pull back” they may weeks or months or years later panic and become a “pull back horse again”. I hope she does okay. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ABOUT BEING FLEXIBLE. THERE IS A SCRIPTURE IN THE BIBLE THAT SAYS: There is wisdom in the MULTITUDE of counselors A wise person becomes wiser by listening to every option before making a decision and sees the need to get as much counsel on any given subject as possible. I think it’s as much about how much the horse trusts you as any other thing.
Repetition and consistency: really the hardest things to do. 😢

I'm enjoying the training videos with Scarlett. I can see that the training is really helping her. She's very thin. Is she receiving any kind of nutritional supplements to help her in that way? Hopefully this is something you feel comfortable sharing. I've spent the last year and a half trying to put weight on my own horse. We are just now seeing the benefits of that.

Thanks Angel. Not particularly concerned at this point as horses usually lose a bit of weight during training. Some horses are find it easier to gain or maintain that others. She will be going back to the owners in a week so she will have the ability to gain some weight back

Great to see this video! Oh poor Sapphire 😢. I had a very similar experience with hard tying one of my horses.. once! That was it. Ive never hard tied since. Even floating I still use a safety pull back just so my horse knows theres a way out. Ha I know that sounds just a little bit crazy while being on a float 😂. But I decided at that point to never hard tie again. Just me and my opinion tho and haven't had a problem since. I do understand that youre training horses for other people who do have certain expectations tho.. ❤🐴

I bought a 2.5yr OTTB mare after her last race at the track. I didn't know she didn't tie. I also didn't know she had a neck fusion from wobbler surgery. I tried using the tie ring , loop around pipe,ect. She wound up permanently damaging her nuchal ligament from pulling back, flipped over backwards ect. It was horrible. Without permission my trainer crosstied her. I'd come to grooming area and see broken crossties. Refused to stop and I FIRED her. The idiot said I was a bad example to her students by not tying her! Such a fool and did more damage to my mare's neck. My mare never hard tied. Instead she ground tied like a statue. Never moved an inch during a bath. I could leave her standing at a wash rack (just a concrete pad with a hose)or anywhere and go out of sight to tackroom or bathroom and she would be standing like a statue where I left her looking for my return. Also she was ok with side or front hobbles. Didn't tie her in the trailer and she was fine. Together 21 yrs.

I would definitely be taking a much more careful approach as you did after the first wreck! Sorry to hear about your experience and hope that she is living a happy and healthy life with you, as I am sure she is. Thank you for sharing this story as I am sure people will benefit from it. You are absolutely right. You do not HAVE to hard tie a horse.
Explain what you mean by “she’s asking to come in now” How can you tell?
Why are her ribs showing? On the Body Condition Scoring, she looks like she rates a 3, which is unnecessarily THIN! Looking back at the first training video, she appeared to be in much better condition without any rib definition.
They lose weight during training.
Damn please feed that poor horse. Shes nothing but skin and bones. I see her rib cage and hip bones sticking out all over. No muscle. Poor horse. 😥
