Hong Kong vegan fencer Vivian Kong just won GOLD in Women's Individual Épée. She's been vegan for 7 years, and she credits the plant-based diet for helping her with recovery. I'm seeing very positive coverage in my local news too!
Here in Manitoba, the Dairy Farmers are giving away milk shakes at events such as Folk Fest and the Icelandic Festival and have a heavy presence at the Children's Museum. Sniff. Sniff. Smells like desperation to me. By the way, I met both Meaghan Duhamel and Dotsie Bausch as well as vegan bodybuilder Robert Cheeke at the Athletes for Animals event put on by the Winnipeg Humane Society in May.
Yikes!! You hate to see them courting the kids, but it happens all the time 🤦🏻♀️ And that's awesome that you met all of them; Dotsie and Meagan are total badasses and really embody what they preach.
Hell yeah! I just came from a wushu tournament last week myself (ofc nothing world class or anything), and I can say that I am pretty proud of my performance Vegan ftw
"Clean and jerk" describes the way the barbell is lifted straight from the floor to above the head in one "clean" motion without any intermediate "rest" on the chest before lifting it over the head. That requires a massive "jerk" off the floor to accomplish! Yes, I'm "man-splaining" again, I can't help myself.
This is wrong, that is a snatch. A clean and jerk does have a rest. A "clean" brings the bar to the chest, where you rest it for a bit, and then you "jerk" by pushing the weight up overhead. This involves a quick, jumpy movement where you land in a slight split, one foot out front and one in back
@@HuckleberryHim I totally defer to your expertise and stand corrected. In my defense, I did say I was "man-splaining" and that requires that my explanation was wrong...
@prieten49 @HuckeberryHim thank you for enlightening me as well as for this LOL-inducing thread 😂 A "mansplaination" feels like the perfect way to be educated on such a thing as a "clean and jerk."
Good video. Wherever money's to be made the abusing industries will be there with their bribes and corruption. They must realise, and fear, that more people are learning that we don't need animal products.
Wow, it must be really good!! And yes, I am familiar with the name but can't recall if I've tried the products before. I think I've heard really good things about the yogurt!
Funny to see ultramarathon legend Scott Jurek included in an article about Olympians. And for him to be called a “marathoner.” Anyway, he certainly belongs in the plant-based athlete hall of fame. It is awesome to see these stories and get the word out, I still feel like my whole-food, plant-based diet is rare among the trail ultra community I hang out with. I typically win my age group and finish near the top of the field overall. I like to show what is possible and that animal products are not necessary. But if my performance was limited, I still would not eat meat, eggs or dairy. They make me sad 😢 and plants make me happy 😊
14:55 coca cola I believe sponsored the olympics between 2008 and 2014. That said - they did try for a healthier direction with odwalla and dasani and whatnot back then, even if bottled water isn't ideal - it's better than soda for sure!
Interesting--and ahh, yes, the Odwalla days, where did they go? (PS I just googled "Odwalla" and the top of the search was dominated by Owala water bottles--it seems we have moved on as a society 😂)
@@TotallyForkable I like the kor brand - they're pretty good. It's like vive organics. You probably haven't had them - because they're located in malibu.

Was suspicious that this was a just a reason for you to talk about figure skating . . . . A-ha! In all seriousness, it's gratifying and interesting that mainstream publications are taking note of plant-powered athletes because despite The Game Changers, the idea that one cannot be an elite athlete on a plant-based diet--I use this term the right way, to refer to vegan-by-mouth, rather than vegan-in-all-consumer-habits, ahem--continues to be doubted. Partly because of our old friend, The Dairy Checkoff Program. [eye roll] Thanks for posting 🙂

Dairy industry: Totally Forkable is constantly pushing figure skating propaganda on her unsuspecting subscribers! You've got my number, Tamara! 😂⛸️ I fear I'm only going to become worse as we near the Milan Olympics. And yes, I believe that is the correct usage of "plant-based diet" too, and "vegan-by-mouth" is a great way to describe it. We continue to be divided on what it means, which often leads to chaos and confusion. As for the Dairy Checkoff, I will certainly be watching the Olympic commercials with a close eye 🧐
Yes, I imagine most athletes are at least curious about it having seen how many incredible performances have been achieved by other athletes on plant based diets!
It seems like the discussion around veganism has changed since Covid away from health benefits. It’s partly because of vegans wanting to point out that it’s not the point and Joe Rogan’s popularity souring and arguing loudly against the health benefits. It could just be my perspective because Netflix does seem to support veganism. I also saw the a commercial for a movie last night called Speak No Evil that had a vegan featured in the commercial, so maybe I’m wrong. It just seems like we lost traction and I think it’s because health benefits aren’t talked about much anymore.
This is an astute observation. Yes, it seems like 2018-2019 was somewhat of a "heyday" for the "plant based revolution," with lots of excitement for mock meats largely thanks to Beyond Meat's successful IPO. Then of course a flurry of influencers jumping on the "plant-based" bandwagon to promote its health benefits, much of which was tinged with diet culture. I feel like now we're in a bit of a "course correction" phase; educating people on what veganism is really about, more and more research coming out about the health benefits of a plant-based diet, etc. I think TikTok has played a sizable role in this course correction; I see more and more sympathy for animals online and public outrage at celebrities promoting animal exploitation.
I am glad that more and more people are going plant based with their diet, but eating plants only doesn't make one a vegan. Vegan is an ethical position, not a diet. Most of the athletes are just on a plant diet rather than vegan. Now of course giving up eating animals and animal products is an awesome step in the right direction and probably would remove the vast majority of animal suffering as food is the primary reason for it, but not vegan. I say that as someone who avoids eating animal products as much as possible while also not claiming the title of vegan. Most vegans are just dietary vegetarians. Still love the content, interviews, and all that. Just clarifying the language of those articles.
Sorry but this is unfair to people who need meat and in the midst of a changing culture are treated like they are "unethical". What is going on at the olympics is actually kind of unfair. Your diet should not je forced on others. Please be aware of high horses and what angle you're speaking from.
Yes, of course. A lot of these articles mis-label things, as I am even guilty of at times. I think most of my viewers know, though, that when I say "vegan athlete" I don't necessarily mean they follow a full vegan lifestyle, but rather a vegan diet.
Funny story: one time my family went on a "moose safari." As I recall, we didn't see a single moose 😂🫎 However, our neighbor caught a moose in his front yard camera one winter which was so cool to see!
I tried the plant based diet for 2 years after stopping smoking because I expected better health but my health deteriorated very fast, I needed to switch to a meat only diet to correct all of the following health problems: obesity, prediabetes, loose teeth, bleeding gums, sensitive teeth cold sores, blocked sinuses, mouth breathing, left eye twitches (tetany) heartburn, calf cramps, yellow stool, blood in stool edema below the knees, painful feet when walking, sunburn is less shoulder, back and neck pain after waking, lower back pain and stiffness 5+ Years on the carnivore lifestyle now :) Eat Meat, Not Too Little, Mostly Fat
Hope your testosterone levels, nightly blood glucose levels, artery clogging, stroke risk, gut health, and body odor are holding up well. Quite a lot of you carnivore cultists around these days, it's the new "thing" I guess. I don't think anyone could make it 5 years on this insanely deadly diet, but I've seen a couple of you claim otherwise
strange - because I had bleeding gums when I ate animal products and so do many other people I know - not to mention loose teeth. If you want teeth tightening - rose geranium is known for that. Vitamin C is the way to avoid scurvy - I'd like to see much of that in animal products. I mean didn't you see which foods were triggering these issues before jumping to carnivore? Realize not every plant is going to be healthy. If you eat daffodil roots instead of onions, poison sumac instead of sumac berries - and say switching to carnivore made you feel better - well of course! Plant-based isn't veganism - so yes, you can get very ill on plants - but that means you just didn't do veganism - to steer you in the right direction. Also - if you get cramps - it's more basil and barley grass powder for calcium, and baking soda to neutralize the lactic acid. I doubt drinking more milk with lactic acid helps.
