Awesome video. I checked to see if there are Joshua Trees in Utah and I guess there are a few. I love the Joshua Trees in Death Valley. One thing I have learned from you is to take advantage of the area in which you live. I am trying to take a photo of the backside snow-capped Timpanogos Mountain with gorgeous clouds overhead and a reflection in the lake. I have tried it twice. Both times the temps where 17F. The first time I was engulfed in fog. The second time, I got a decent shot but the clouds lacked color and the lake had ripples. My goal is to drive out there once a week until I get the shot I want. I love the Joshua trees. Awesome video. Thanks for sharing. Nyall
thank you so much for watching nyall! the timpanogos are stunning! we stayed there for a night back in september when we drove up the tetons. the fall colors were amazing but it was also very cold 🥶 😅stay safe nyall and merry christmas! cheers, chris
Loved this video guys. Mike you were so excited and happy, I couldn't help but get excited as well. Chris, I loved the video edits on this one . .really well done.
Very nice captures (both of you), you’re not just showing how to take a photo (snapshot), but how to make a photo. I usually don't comment on who got the best shot because you’re both very good photographers, but this time I have to give it to Chris, that black and white at 7:50 is what I consider fine art. Stay safe.
oh thank you enrique!!! so much appreciated! it is always surprising to me how rarely i take a photo that i myself are very fond of. it's probably 2 photos a year😱not a very good rate if you consider how many photos i take per year🤣oh well, cheers with a mate 🧉
That's one of the reasons we take our time setting up landscape shots when we are not in a hurry, so when we are in a hurry things work without a lot of thought. Nice!
This is my home town. Just bought my first Alpha series Sony and I’m so stoked to make a quick trip out there and get beautiful shots of all hills and rocks I spent my childhood exploring. Good deal, man! And awesome work
That is really epic scenery! I haven't seen any Joshua trees personally, but they look really fascinating. The conditions were perfect for those great photos! Awesome video!
Wow guys, what a time you had their. Amazing images. I loved them all and I know the sky is all about the colour, but I absolutely adored Chris' black and white image at 7.50. It looked like the branches were on fire if that doesn't sound stupid. You don't need colour for an imagination. Book idea from both of you sounds great. I will buy them for sure. Do you get a decent view of the Jupiter and Saturn where you are? Perhaps you have taken an image and would be great to see. 😁
Amazing light and excellent compositions. The old saying that when it rains, it pours is true in landscape photography. When you an opportunity to photograph with those conditions, you really have to make the most of it. Hats off to both of you on the stunning photographs. Peace and Safe Travels.
Its about time u guys get a stunning sunrise right ? im happy for u guys ..those images are amazingly stunning i love all of them the sky its so colorful n compositions ..great job to both of you !! MERRY CHRISTMAS !!! stay safe n GOD BLESS !!!!!1
The "Hidden Valley" area of the park is quintessential Joshua Tree. I'm not sure if it's good or bad that I know almost exactly where you were standing for sunset, (southeast of the HV parking lot about 200 meters on the other side of the large boulder pile). LOL. Glad you guys got some burners, enjoyed the park, and that your cats were unharmed.
I have no doubt that you outclass me in every way regarding photography, if I might just one suggestion. Lengthen the bottom part of your tri pod legs always first then the middle section. At that point if you require to make your tri pod taller it is easier to do so from the top without having to spin everything around. Love the video's, keep them coming.
Thanks Randy! For convenience you’re absolutely right. I always lengthen the “bigger” legs first for better stability. Then the lower legs only if I really need to. But for the running around at sunrise I definitely should’ve been faster 😂
Mike and Chris, great video . I love your enthusiasm and knowledge. Wonderful pictures of the Joshua trees and sunset/sunrise. I live in CA and go out to the Mojave desert a lot and I was wondering roughly what area where you taking pictures. I could see vehicle traffic in the background, so must be an accessible area. Mike what's the name of your back pack or who makes it, looks well built and functional. Thank you for sharing such great. photos! Happy trails
ha of course you are right frank but the pine trees and junipers are hard to photograph because they usually grow very close together. that being said, i have one tree photo from the flagstaff area that i really like! 😅it was a winter scene, the snow helped with separation. thanks for watching frank!
Shooting black and white has allowed me to just enjoy sunrises and sets for what they are. Color photography landscape scrambles are fun to watch though. 🤣
When going law to photograph a tree here is where you wish a screen that tilts vertically, this is a comment to Chris. I wish Canon and Nikon could think for low angle photography when designing their cameras. Where I live in Oregon there are a lot of various trees we are surrounded. For Mike, Have you sometimes gone up on the small rocky humps that I see and tried to capture an elevated scene of the landscape? Looks like it is very possible looking at your surroundings?
thanks gino!! i got the canon r5 a few weeks ago and this one actually has a flip screen that does tilt vertically. so now, i can do everything 😎😂merry christmas and thank you for watching 🎄cheers, chris
Thanks Blu when we think it’s necessary. I always watch the histogram. If I can capture both the highlights and shadows, I usually take one exposure. I have a video on how I use the histogram and “proper exposure”. It’s from about a month ago. Maybe 2 months now
I hope to see you come out with a book, I'll be looking for it. In the meantime, check out Jack Dykinga's book "Desert - The Mojave and Death Valley" for ideas and inspiration.
I sometimes wonder if locals try to save their favorite spots by putting fear in visitors. Also, I believe recent crime is no indication to the potential for future crime, at least not in BLM to NF land. This said, it's not very relaxing if you are always in "orange" and are being hyper sensitive to your surroundings so I can understand moving on. Look at you both bustin' out the B&W! Love it! I look forward to the book(s). Hahahaha, shutter sound instead of a peep 🤣😂🤣😂
Yeah we thought that might be the case too. Some local driving around on a quad talking about crime in the area. Either way, we decided to move on. Hopefully we can get back soon!
Haha you got clouds and they made you run like a fat kid for cake 🤣 that was some awesome light for sure guys and great images. The book is a great idea Mike, you think limiting your size is going to hinder you or just make you work harder?
Probably a little of both haha. The book subject may evolve, so I’m not putting too much pressure on it. It’s definitely a big goal, but I can’t rush it either. I have a bit of a library from the past few years of images that will help too.

You guys keep providing us with better images each time out!!!
Thank you Mike!

Glad you had some cloud colour at last Mike. Definitely gives anyone taking photos a real buzz to get colour like that. Stay safe both of you.
Thanks Steve!!! It got exciting for sure!
Beautiful photos and great skies! I love the Joshua trees and your enthusiasm 😁
Thank you so much Joseph!
Hello Mike & Chris, I was so happy for you both. Stunning images and such a marvellous sight. Really enjoyed this vlog

Thank you Antony!!! Yeah we have some dark skies near us. We weren’t able to get out and get any unfortunately. Thank you for watching as always!
thank you so much antony!! the black and white was quiet a bit earlier than the color version and i must say, i like the contrast a lot☺️
Outstanding photos Chris and Mike! The colors were amazing, but I really love the black and whites! You guys rock!
Thank you so much Barry!

Nice photos Mike and Chris. I especially liked Chris' photo of the 3 Joshua trees in B&W. Safe travels.
Thank you Robert!
I'm glad you had such beautiful colorful atmospheres, great pictures!

Haha too funny. I found that area on Google maps that looked good. I want to get back when we have more than a night.
"The greatest sunrise the world has ever seen" that's quite a bold claim Mike😉😂😂 Beautiful scenery and beautiful images guys 🥰

Correction: “shots”.
Thank you Khalid!

Chris, if you miss trees, there is Chiricahua National Monument (3.5 hours from Phoenix) with trees and spectacular rock formations.
Yes I’ve been there but chris hasn’t. Definitely on the AZ list!
I've been thinking of doing a photo book myself..... Interested to see how your progress goes.
Yeah it’s been an idea for a while, it’s time to get off my butt and do it lol
Book? Aha i reserve myself a buyer-spot ^^
Haha thank you Martin!
