You can have THE best lens, body, tripod, filters and everything else, but if you don't have the light, you won't get a good pic. Light alone doesn't make the photograph, but without it no one can - with it, and with the right ability, you can. Excellent video.
Absolutely amazing video with actual advice on how to improve your photography👍🏼🔥 not like others trying to clickbait their followers and then giving 0 actual advice, just selling their e-books
Printing your own work is really the greatest reward. I finally got some metal prints of my favorites from NZ and now they’re mounted throughout our apartment. Makes me very happy every time I see them and really puts things in perspective. Seeing the physical location you shot turned back into a physical representation that went through all those digital, intangible steps is a special thing. It really motivates and allows a fresh perspective on one’s own photography. Great vid Mads!
Can only look on longingly from here on the East Coast of Australia, our land is so old that the epic sites have all been ground down. Planes trains and automobiles may have been invented, what hasn't been is the money tree that would shower me in filthy lucre to enable trips to be taken to those wonderful sites you share.. Doesn't stop me watching your posts, saving up my pension money to buy your composition e-books, well worth every dollar by the way, and having pleasant dreams of visiting the sites you show and being young and fit enough to put myself in the shots. Maybe in my next life. 😄
No way - we have many 'epic' locations on the East Coast of Australia - they may not be mountains but our coastline is just stunning. Not sure of course where you are (I'm on the Central Coast, NSW) - so much to offer here as well as north and south!
Mads, this is an excellent video. Essentially, you distilled many/most/all (?) of the key points into one summary. Great work. This is a video to watch many times. Thank you.
This was such an amazing video. The images absolutely were EPIC. I want to rewatch it at half speed so I can just savor the scenery more. Mads, your energy and enthusiasm are contagious, and your teaching-inspirational. Thank you for all the work you put into this channel.
I'm always apprehensive of sensationalist titles, but I learned a lot from this video. Also, making a calendar or book with photos from each year as a memory and recap is really satisfying (+ it's a good gift).
sleeping in the engine room of a ferry? you mean in the shared bed rooms in deck 2 of the Norröna? :D funny fact, I slept there despite having booked a normal cabin in an upper deck. But the sea was shaky and I couldn't handle sea sickness, and the stablest place on the boat by far was the deck 2 next to the engine room. So it was a good choice from you :D. To do epic photos, it is super easy, go to epic places (in europe : norway/dolomites/faroes/iceland...), do research to see where to go exactly there, chase epic moments (usually at sunrise or sunset, depends of the weather, which is lottery), stay as many days as possible, possibly months. Use a drone. Add a final epic touch on photoshop.
This video was awesome it was like being on a roller coaster it took my breath away. I hope that I can someday take awesome shots like this to display on my walls at home.🤩
Thank you for sharing your steps in creating epic landscape photographs. Also, I love the idea of printing out photographs into photobooks. I have been making them annually for the past 10 years. They are my archive of all the adventure and travel throughout the years, and also a record of my progress in photography. They are also an important reminder of how much I've done in the past. Once again, thank you for your kind sharing on how everyone can improve their landscape photography.
And Nigel at part where you speak about friends and possibilities... You two are my favorite photography teachers. Thanks a lot, for gorgeous works and advice!
I have just managed to find a Sony Zeiss 16-35 for my A99 and so can't wait for better weather to go out with it. I don't mind rain, but it has been a bit too wet recently! I don't have a 24-70, but I do have the Sigma 24-105 f/4 A lens, which is great. That together with my Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 or the Sony SSM 70-400 are my go to zooms. It is amazing what lurks in the shadows! Great to have this epic review of all the focal lengths...thanks Mads.
Thank you Mads! I appreciate all you do help me take better photos and videos. I still can't believe how much time it takes me to create just one short video and you do this every week. I'm curious who inspires you to do such incredible work? Are there any other photographers, artists, or teachers that keep the creative flames burning?
Thank you, David! Yes, this specific video was a lot of extra work. All the small graphics and animations just take so much extra time and problem solving. There's a whole host of photographers who inspire me - too long of list - and it depends a bit on the specific work we're talking about. For video production it's basically the landscape photographers on UA-cam, but I also try to use ideas from non-landscape photographers :)
Love this video Mads !!! I also have a great satisfaction of printing or making a book, it is the best way to view and enjoy your photos ! I'll always find something in your videos to learn from...... super !!!!!
Common sense is not that common, and it's great to hear you explain what is, after all, common sense! You make it sound so simple in your easy and simple to understand style - "Thanks Mads." What more can I say other than this video is EPIC!
Great content as usual. Let me just say, the impact that drones have made to photography cannot be described and is highly underrated. The footage and the perspective is unique 👍. Thank you for sharing this video.
Mads, great video as always. I just arrived from Island and sometimes we faced very bad weather. I would like to know how do you protect your equipment, during rainy days? Did you ever lost or damage equipment due to the rain and water?
Thanks for this Mads! As I’m about to edit some Epic photos having already adopted some of these steps, this is timely and beneficial! Very nice book !!!
Great video (one of your best) and EPIC photos!!! However, early in the video you advise against using negative space...but, your book has quite a few photos featuring negative space!
Thanks a lot. No, I advice against using negative space for EPIC photos where you wanna cram as much "nature stuff" into the frame as possible. Negative space usually conveys something else and also something I like to use.
@@MadsPeterIversen, ok, I've watched again, correct! I suppose then it depends on what criteria one is giving to "EPIC", because, in my view, "EPIC" landscape photos can also be had using negative space. :)
Step 0.0 : Get enough cash to travel Step 0.1 : Get healthy and energizing Step 0.2 : Get Creative Step 0.3 : Get the visa of the country Step 0.4: Get an epic camera and Lens Step 1 : Get companions so you don't get lost into mountains Step 2 : Learn On the spot as you didn't have northern lights in your backyard Step 3 : Get a drone to scout the area Step 4 : Take the photos Step 5 : Edit Step 6 : Cherish your insta post with 20 likes
Hey Mads, another great video with plenty of great insights and images. The message about getting out there in the wild weather days to find something special really struck a chord.
Iceland, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Lofoten, but no Greenland?! I'm going later this year to trek the Arctic Circle Trail - do you know of any photographic recommendations Mads? Excellent video - I will look at your courses.
Great video as always Mad! I’m curious as to what monitor you use for your editing? Maybe you have mentioned it in the past and I just never saw it. Thanks again.
This was the EXACT video I was looking for today. Thank you Mads, I always find your shots to be so inspiring. They match the kind of tone and feelings I want to be able to shoot some day. I appreciate you posting this content my friend.
Epic video Mads! One thing I wonder about though is how you know exactly where to stand in your big landscape photos? Do you put down a marker or something?
Very informative video as usual. One thing I have always been curious about and hope you do a video about it sometime...you are a master at adding yourself in your images. This always adds to you images. The fact that you wear black instead of the "normal" red is perfect. You always stand out yet complement the photos and I am sure that is because of you wearing black. Your size in the image is very appropriate but I do not get a feel as to your distances from your camera. Also curious as to how you trigger the camera whether an app on your phone or some other remote release. It think this would be a great video.
I agree. Well said Kerry. I've been curious about how Mads triggers the shots. I'm guessing some wireless trigger, or Sophie is there to push the button.
Thanks for the very kind comment! It's actually the build-in intervalometer I use. I explain it in my video about shooting full manual or my epic selfie video :)
Great video Mads. No matter how long anyone has been shooting, videos like this one are educational and great reminders of good skills to employ. I really think dramatically emphasizing depth is a good thing and is about the only time I enjoy anything being puked out into my face. Thanks.
Great tips! Especially the tip on weather. Seek out those bad weather / not clear sky days! Stunning video work through the mountains at 2:20. Truly spectacular. Learning how to use lens distortion and compression to your advantage, paired with good conditions, is a prime recipe for great images. Appreciate the editing insights too.
I just captured some of my best landscapes of my life. The weather was incredible. Black clouds hovering over the mountains, clear skies of towards the ocean sunset surrounded by swirls that captured the colours, and wispy low clouds flying through the scene at a million miles an hour. I was sitting on the rocks laughing to myself the whole time. I usually only encounter exciting conditions when I'm looking out my backyard or driving to work.
Fab video, Mads! Great content, super advice and stunning images. And that book is just gorgeous! Thanks for sharing this and for all the hard work that goes into it! 😍👏
Step 0 - Go to an ABSOLUTELY EPIC Place.
Same 😢 the praries ain’t got nothing epic…
Lol, i was thinking the same😂
Right
Perfect. We are done.
Pakistan 😂😂

Great straightforward explanations about the photographic skills involved in landscape photography. Well worth the time to listen to and make notes.

Great vid Mads!
Thanks! Best video for Landscape! Amazing!
Thank you so very much, Marc! 🙏
Absolutely loved this video. Your energy and enthusiasm is inspiring and your knowledge was so helpful. Thank you 🙏 for your hard work.
The description of the differences between the lens and their uses just gave me multiple AHA moments. Fantastic. Thanks.
This is such practical advice, thank you for making it clear.
4:03 i actually liked that photo its minimal
Love your authenticity, snd of course your stunning snd creative photos!

You job, then, is to make something "epic" out of what is! ;)
No way - we have many 'epic' locations on the East Coast of Australia - they may not be mountains but our coastline is just stunning. Not sure of course where you are (I'm on the Central Coast, NSW) - so much to offer here as well as north and south!

You've been at so many great locations and come back with so many beautiful photos. Thank you for sharing it with us. Wow!
Thanks!
Thank you ever so much, Bobby! 🙏
Super practical advice, I’ll definitely use these tips.
I absolutely loved this video. I myself am amateur photographer and I learned so much from this. Thank you
Mads, this is an excellent video. Essentially, you distilled many/most/all (?) of the key points into one summary. Great work. This is a video to watch many times. Thank you.
Sometimes UA-cam recommends really marvelous channels
Glad i found you

Thank you so much for such a kind comment, Valerie! I really appreciate it 🙏
I'm going to start playing "epic" bingo with your videos 😂😂 I'm kidding, because honestly I love the excitement and energy you bring to the table.
For those wondering..
Epic Counter: 34 spoken and I believe twice it was printed. Now that, Mads.. was EPIC! Well done
Your work has inspired me and made me better even more than that it has rekindled my passion I thank you for that from Canada
totally great and fun pointers for hacks like me dragging around expensive gear and then at a loss at what to do with it! Tak!
I'm always apprehensive of sensationalist titles, but I learned a lot from this video. Also, making a calendar or book with photos from each year as a memory and recap is really satisfying (+ it's a good gift).
Never mind epic photographs. What about epic photographers. Mads listening to you is like poetry.
Some of the best nature photos I have ever seen.
Thank you so much!

Tak for det! Det var dejlig hurtigt til pointen, og du ramte sgu lige i skabet!

not to speak about how annoying they are to others sometimes and there is a reason they are banned in a lot of places...
Amazing video! I learned so much that I can't wait to apply. I plan on ordering the e-book.
Great video. The book you created is stunning.
Mads, one of the most informative and valuable videos I have ever seen on landscape and composition!! Thank you
Love the video mads, only question for which is what tripod features in this video?
This was an EPIC video. Thanks for sharing these information. It‘s really helpfull !
Thank you for another Great video. Very interesting to see How you work with the contrast in your postprosessing!

Epic video Mads! One thing I wonder about though is how you know exactly where to stand in your big landscape photos? Do you put down a marker or something?
I usually find some stone or plant or whatever as a reference in the field. If I'm in doubt I move a big back and forward.
Lots of great information in this tutorial Mads!
That was a nice explanation. Well done!
Great video Mads. You've made a large impact on improving my landscape photography. Many thanks.

Hi Mads Very good video Where are some of the alpine mountain areas that you showed in the first 5 minutes of this video? David
Thanks a lot. That's Tre Cime, you can see me visit the place in my Dolomites videos :)
Simply inspiring!
Really liked your Iceland photos. What’s your favorite lens when you take the landscape

EPIC photos without a doubt👍
Great video, thanks a lot. I´ve learned a lot using the different focal lengths - I hope! ;-)
Wonderful video! Thanks!
Thoroughly enjoyable video Mads!
Very funny too :D
Haha thanks ☺️
Great video. Thanks for the tips. I love beach pictures but how do you protect your lens from the sand? I already ruined one.
Never been an issue. Only if the camera blows over...
Absolutely great video!
Fantastic video Mads! I mean it is … EPIC! 😂. Thank you!
Great info! Thank you.
Great video, Mads! I am on photography hiatus atm, but your enthusiasm and photos just make me want to go out and photograph again!
Fab video, Mads! Great content, super advice and stunning images. And that book is just gorgeous! Thanks for sharing this and for all the hard work that goes into it! 😍👏
Can we shoot long exposure pic in day light without Nd filter?
