    You truly see the greatness in Chuck Liddell in this video. There's a misconception he was a sloppy brawler. When in fact Chuck had great knowledge in the striking art. His timing was his best asset and his technique. Had that Karate base to for his footwork and striking form. He was ahead of his time in mma as far as striking is concerned. Was well adapt to the art of striking!

    Real martial artist. Those talking down on his techniques should watch his old fights, before he was even in the ufc. Everything he explained here worked for him. May not be a good tip for up and coming fighters but he got away with his "flaws" because he had concussive KO power and great timing. He also threw from awkward angles.
    Bottom line is, he was successful because he found what worked for him.

      Well said mate. Same as how not everyone could fight like Anderson Silva. It's all individual and if u can implement ur game. These guys being critical wouldn't stand a chance against a prime chuck in any combat sport

      You can get away with it today as well the "evolution" is a two sided sword, some old stuff in combat sports works well today Philly shell, leg kicks, Zabit's striking & takedowns(there is footage of that from the 80s)

      I mean yeah but no matter who you are you shouldn't lean off your balance to throw an uppercut or body hook just like hes saying. that whole concept is boxing itsself which is balance. When hes talking about the bad way hes 100% right about not leaning that far to throw the hook and the core of how to throw punches correctly is this way you just shorten it up after you learn the line you body is supposed to traverse.

  • @Lotus-Son
    @Lotus-Son 8 років тому +6

    Sometimes I forget the follow through and really putting that power at the tail-end of the knuckles and dropping the weight all the way onto the fist (like Chuck does mechanically) usually gives all the power you need. He's like the shining example that a lot of us get too caught up in twisting your body and hips and snapping your punches like a boxer and focusing so much on that. It's good in that you can bring your hands to the guard and launch a barrage efficiently; which to me is traditional boxing and why boxers tend to use different parts of their body to generate power and snap punches so they can quickly drop back into the guard.
    But Chuck shows if you let your hand go and let it follow through and sometimes not to over-emphasize technique on hip rotation and snapping your punch and just sort of sledge-hammering your punch and keeping it a little loose you can get some serious power. I've been working so hard on my boxing from boxers that when i re-watch Chuck's stuff I'm like "ohhhh yes. These mechanics are pure power and are undeniable."
    I truly believe Foreman, who gets judged for his classical boxing and punching technique, uses this same exact mechanic that Chuck shows here. He punches much more with his arms and hands than any other boxer before and after and generates huge power. Another boxer today that shows this is Maidana. He has overhands just like this and when he misses you can see his punches following through like crazy, making a lot of what he does look like wild haymakers.

    And he never did trash talk he just let his hands do the talking.

    " Don't get down any, just throw it". Worked out pretty well for Tyson. But totally different sports A. Tyson had enough power and speed to use that technique and not land off balance or in a bad spot, and B. He didn't have to worry about getting taken down if he did. Chuck, in his pinnacle, had some of the most precise, fast hands of his time. When he started teeing off on Tito...man. Only person I can think of that outdid him in hand speed at the time is Vitor, and he didn't throw combos as much as just powerful straight rights like in the Wanderlei fight.

      Yes, he threw a great one vs. Overeem in Pride, in case anyone missed it. Textbook, and Chuck moved his head way left to dodge any counter at the same time. Perfect blend of offense and defense at the same time. That arching overhead right wobbled Overeem; then Chuck Ko'd him with a left hook soon after.
