Another cracking video… despite the slightly disturbing licking incident! 😂😂 I’m just about to eat my dinner… at least I was!
Hey Phil, thank you for this video. I just used 123plus on some mdf wardrobe doors. Came up a flippin treat! So thank you 👍
Fantastic!
First video I've seen of yours Phil, always see your posts on the deccie forum so thought its about time I clicked and watched one😁
LoL. Well I don't want to say better late than never .... But..... Better late than never lol
Phil deffo best using your finger to smooth the caulk out! Especially if you haven't had any breakfast that day haha 😂 im partial to a bit of caulk for breaky
Working in London atm, just seen union brushes in Leyland store, great shops
Recently bought the red devil one time caulk not used as yet, along with Isomatsti -A which is credit to Daniel Nugents Channel. I’ve been impressed with it, nice smooth finish give it time to skin over before painting, so far pleased with it time will tell.. Used to use painters mate but not as good as it once was.
Agree with preparing and priming surfaces first
Before caulking. Bit of water and sponge with you to wet your finger.
Hey, great Chanel! Looking for advice - painting skirting boards with dark blue satin velspar trade. Sanding down first as it looks like old paint is oil gloss. What primer do you recommend before? Bit worried about BIN as may dry too quickly! (And costs small fortune 😂) Newbie diy-er here 🙂
Thanks for finding me. I've a few videos on painting over older paints
Keeping it simple...
I'd sand down.
Then use a grip primer.
Then bring to a finish with the UC and top coat paint system you choose.
Watch my playlist of product testing... Loads of different paints you may want to consider trying.
Some paints have a recommended primer/UC to use before two top coats of their finish paint.
Some paints primer/UC has an adhesion property to it, that you don't need to use a grip coat as a first coat. (Like the Isomat paints)
Other paints, say you can just go over older sanded down paint with two coats of their finish (Dulux heritage eggshell springs to mind)
Grip coats...
Stuff like....
Zinsser 123, Aqua BIN, 123+, Cover stain or BIN
There's also Smith and Rogers blockade which is like Zinsser BIN, being Shellac based.
Have a look at that in the future too
Hope that helps
Thanks for the info. I am gonna go with Zinsser. Would you recommend 123 or 123+? From what I see in your videos you use 123+ more but not sure that’s needed over the 123?
The main issue I am having is almost impossible to sand down the skirting due to the shape…do the zinssers really work without sanding?
Does it run any less than Bog standard 123? Using a new can of it now and seems thinner than I remember, watching for runs on door architraves!
Hi Phil, great video as always!
I’ve purchased a pre war property and would like to know what products/process would be best to change the old oil based gloss woodwork to a water based satin. Appreciate any tips and products 👌🏼 cheers
Jack Jack Jack....... Have a look at video I did a few weeks ago about just that question you ask. See if that's what you're after knowing ;)
Hi Phil, I went ahead and watched the video, I’m actually wanting to spray the woodwork (HVLP) would you recommend isomat isolac primer as grip coat and primer then their satin aqua for topcoat? Prep would be 180 grit mirka pads?. I’m a DIY painter not a professional so advice is welcome
Hi Phil great video as usual , how do you keep your caulk from drying out in the nozzle ? Don’t use it very often thanks
Have spare nozzles that when you come to use it again you put a new one on.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator lol thanks didn’t know you could get spares, must sound stupid sorry 😂and thank you 🙏
@@donnagammell when you buy a stoke box they come with loads. I use the same one when I'm happy with the size I've cut. So spares mount up lol
That was more entertaining than I expected.😂
I've not seen 123+ yet, is it any better than 123 or is it a newer formulation?
So much better.... It will stop water staining.
I have no idea why they still sell 123.
Wouldn’t mind trying the Onetime caulk out but it’s never in stock at our local PaintWell and struggling online also! Where do you get yours Phil?
push Paintwell to get more in, it's there within days. Failing that Crown do a good price on it ;)
That 123 plus is probably excellent for priming radiators too. Got 4 more to do. Wonder if a foam roller would be an option (at least for the primer) on these flat radiators since it is time consuming with a brush and not got a sprayer 😮. Any tips to speed things up?
I'd always use zinsser bin for priming rads or anything metal I believe the 123 bullseye is water base for wood
Yes I usually do and wouldn't use 123 for that but with the improvement in 123 plus I think it would qualify as a radiator primer 🙂
I'm about to prime some MDF panelling (slightly different from yours as I have MDF sheets underneath the batons and rails, so no bare plaster). I was planning on using Zinsser BIN for my priming as I've alway used that on MDF with a water based system on top. What benefits would the 123+ have over the BIN. Great channel.
No smell and easier to apply. BIN doesn't brush great and dries a bit too quick with it being Shellac based paint.
No need to use BIN, it's not going to stain, no knots and it's only MDF, you could just use acrylic primer TBH
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Brilliant, thank you - so helpful. One final question (actually two) - do I need to undercoat ? If so what undercoat would you recommend ? I think over the years I used a primer / undercoat all in one for lots of woodwork (I hate the word trim too) and always went with a couple of primer / undercoat all in ones then a couple of top coats. I was going to spray my panelling, should I brush the primer and undercoats then spray the top coats? I was planning on masking up and spraying all the coats
@@dougborland primer/Uc in one... prime, then fill/sand, then give it another coat of primer/Uc... nib down.. then two top coats.
If you watch some of my other painting MDF (spraying it) that may help too.
@@dougborland I know your question was to Phil but to share some recent experience I’ve used Leyland Trade Acrylic Primer / Undercoat on a ceiling that was silk, walls that were previously papered and which needed a lot of filling and sanding, and woodwork / doors that were either new and bare or old oil based gloss. Good sand down and a couple of coats of this and it could be mistaken for a Matt white finish, covers the filler well and so far (touch wood) the finish coats have gone on nicely and the satin (Aqua Guard) on skirting/doors feels solid. Be interested to hear if you have tried this paint or if Phil would recommend this approach as it’s £15 for 2.5L and dries very quickly unlike some of the hybrid undercoats. Good luck with your project 👍🏻
@@Liverpool1ne Previous projects I've used Johnsons Acrylic Primer and Undercoat and it was pretty decent stuff. Been using some of the Zinsser products lately and liked them too
What would you use for an old pine door with knots?
Have a look ok at my BIN Aqua video. That will do knots, CoverStain, 123 & 123+ don't
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator thanks boss
Got some raw mdf skirtings to do. Didn't think 123 or 123+ would be ok to use since they are WB, could cause swelling? Will trust your vid on this one 😊
Seen this video?
ua-cam.com/video/glJ46PAuPTo/v-deo.html
Watched that, thank you. So I could basically wash prime it with anything (woodwork suitable) that I have got left in the cupboard, WB or SB? I have got to seal 1 or 2 walls with Gardz so was thinking of sealing the raw MDF skirtings with that...?
@@ManuelaSmith-bk1zp you'll be fine. Sand it after you've coated it up
Great video mate but I'm a haftprimer man now can't beat the stuff.
I'm waiting to be sent some samples..... LoL
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator I've heard your as tight as ducks bum lol....its great stuff mate
Hahahaha!!! FFS licking the brush 😂 hard to concentrate!!!!! ...... Have to rewind....
I use hb42 caulk it never craze on me! Hope you all good Phil regards Michael mes decorating
jus wondering phil why would you change from oil eggshell to water based would have been easier just to give 1-2 coats of eggshell rather than using a expensive water based primer and expensive water based top coats and the extra coats 3-4 coats
Oil is old hat now, so many good wb paints.
Yes it's an extra coat. But it's easy to apply, I get two coats on in a day and the finish (particularly when I use the ScuffX in the hallway) you'd be hard pushed to know if it's oil or water, it feels silky and sold.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator you must really hate oil based paints then Phil if your choosing to spend the equivalent of a weekly shop extra
Hi Phil was gonna say one time fill instead of two pack
You watched it all now?
best to aways use 2 pack if you can over a bloody lightweight flower filler
jump on using the halfprimer far better then 123 , great stuff
hows it prices in the market of adhesive primer paints? top, middle or bottom?
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator I get 10ltr tubs..£150 . Got excellent coverage. Works on bare wood and mdf .how mush is 123+ on 5 ltr
I believe Lick took over Eco Union, shame as Eco Union brushes are nice!
i thought this was about paint, not paintbrush porn lol...
