1:38 "Slicing the Pie" is definitely a real-world technique used by the military! My brother enlisted about 9 months ago, and one of the weekends he was back home he taught me exactly that. The core concept of it is showing as little of yourself to your enemy while you can see as much of them as possible. From what I got from him, it's mainly used in tight spaces, corridors and around corners. I love the fact that videogames can take concepts and techniques like these and implement them as part of the way to get better in-game!
I love that you brought up the military thing. I've been thinking about checking out various infantry fighting info sources just because they may have stuff that applies to gaming that we aren't using yet. Did he mention any other helpful stuff, especially stuff we don't really tend to do/talk much about in gaming?
It's interesting to explore these concepts in Destiny 2 when it's not necessarily a game that prioritises outright aim and gun skill. People will cry "yeah but bullet magnetism" or "lol AA is too high" but I think this misses the point. Slicing the pie is 100% a movement thing in Destiny 2, but I don't see it used much outside of scrims, where players are tuned to find small gains and act within a small window of opportunity. I'm glad you covered this, hopefully more people adopt this and start realising that movement is a spectrum of tools and abilities and doesn't just consist of dodging, sliding and jumping.
Yeah it's funny, watching scrims reminds me more of competitive CS where teams fight for every little angle carefully because the average aim is so good and players tend to punish very small movement mistakes. Great observation!
@@PattycakesGaming Well it sure was impressive. Maybe I should start doing some Kovaaks as well sincw I have not been playing any games in almost a year but wanna get back into them
I'm glad someone brought that up. I came down here looking for a comment like going and started think "what, no one saw that or are we just not gonna talk about it??"
Pro tip: in destiny your character holds his gun slightly to the right, when possible peak while have the wall to your left, that way you have the least anount of exposure necessary to see an enemy
The concept makes sense now that you say it, though I haven't heard of the term before. Near the end of the video you were asking what are some other topics that we might like to see covered. I am not sure if this is something you could make a video on, but one that could be useful is how to react to certain things. I have found myself playing comp., or what is now survival, and ending up in a good deal of 1v3s when both my teammates die and I am the last one standing. Sometimes I am able to pick them off one by one and not face the whole enemy team head on, other times, I get rushed by the entire enemy team and loose the round. There are times when you just can't help it, but over all is there a better way to methodically pick them off? For game modes like control, are there ways to know when you should go capture the zone or defend the zone while your teammate gets the capture?
I just now realized that the reason why I prefer Eye Of Sol over Revoker is that the closer zoom forces me to slice the pie from farther back. I've heard this concept before, but even now I find myself learning new things about my habits. Great vid brotha, keep em up!
Played a lot more swords and magics MMOs/RPGs prior to my first fps which is d2. It's exciting learning new skills after already 20 years of gaming behind me.
Incredible good video as always. I would like to see a video about keeping a positive mindset. It's hard for me to stay positive in a long play session. Especially in sbmm environments.
Awesome video. I love this kind of content that blatantly points out things that we often do instinctively. Watching this actually made me realize that it's something *I* need to pay more attention too. Strangely, when I invade in gambit, this is my default way of engaging since it's always a 4v1 or 3v1 and I'm cautious right from the start, but for some reason I only occasionally consider it while playing crucible. I've been trying to be more of a thoughtful player lately rather than my natural instinct of overwhelming aggression. Outright aggression certainly works well against less skilled players, but it often gets me in trouble with more experienced players who land their shots far more often than whiffing them and tend to always have the right gun in their hand.
There are so many maps in Destiny 2 with random playlist, it is comparatively hard to learn all the maps just by playing. It is recommended that you learn all the maps one by one, like one map a week or two maps a week in Private matches even solo starting with the maps you most frequently encounter in your preferred game mode in Crucible. This helped me a lot in getting to know about these spots.
Nice tip, didn't know that about the corners and it actually explains a lot. Also explains why tether never works around a corner. Next video? I think Movement with weapons. You see a lot of top tier players change their movement style that best suits their weapon (like jumping more with a shotty and sliding with a sniper). When it comes to primaries though they seem to be able to move without missing a shot. Maybe that's just me though
Itchy 0ne Grip thanks! One of the goals of my channel is to try to teach skills that will help you play any FPS game, and this video is part of that project
I do this obsessively didn't know there was a term for it tho. I'm 70% blind so I have to use everything to make up for no depth perception and bad vision.
Its weird bc Im use to these I learned these myself quickly but I sometimes forget people need to know these basics. Well done! Continue giving off these advice videos.
In my army days we would “pie the corner” always making sure your rifle was the first thing around each turn. Very hard to do in games as you have no control over body positions. Rainbow six is probably as close as you get to actual effectiveness. Without peekers advantage it be almost impossible to surprise anyone because your body parts always show before your weapon
Yo, I remember playing against you a week or two back and I found your channel through that name. Looking at these videos were really enlightening for my pvp experience and I'm happy to take a few of these pointers; It's helped keep my performance more consistently high, even when I have bad games.
In old fast-paced FPS like Quake 3 for example we used a "wall hugging" technique, since most players expect the opponent to strafe left to right during a fight, "hugging" the nearest wall while going foward confused the opponent and gave you an instant advantage. Combine that with a locked on LG and it was pretty much done.
Pie cutting is a concept i was taught early on in law enforcement and it has been extremely useful in multiple different trainings and real building clearing situations. On top of that, even if friendly fire isn’t active in D2, you can block friendly ammo so always be aware of team mates especially if you dont have solid comms.
Yeah I learned about it from watching random military training videos years ago and then learned how I could use it in gaming from watching pro CS players. It's such a cool concept!
I buy no means consider myself a threat on the battle field but i hold fairly well. I find myself doing most of these things especially setting up support with the team to not let the enemy have a chance to heal. Definitely going to focus on refining these
I must say, I really appreciate you man. I was GARBAGE as far as game sense before I sat down with one of your videos. You really helped me to understand why it is so important to keep moving, and to think ahead. Keep up the good work!
Good stuff! I'm a former Army certified Infantry instructor. I used to teach a technique called "pieing out" a room. It is very similar to what you are talking about. Good job!
I remember the 1st time I heard this term. It was a documentary about a guy who came home from combat (I think desert storm) and 1 day he just snapped. He went out into the streets with his rifle and started a battle with police. Think he killed 4 officers before they brought him down. He used that technique and the officers weren't trained to recognize it or effectively combat it.
Love the videos! As a console player, I’d really appreciate a video talking about sensitivity, especially for games like Destiny where movement is really important. I know there’s lots of videos out there but I feel like someone with your knowledge can cover this more in-depth and talk about things like if there’s a skill gap to sensitivity, if anyone can learn any sensitivity with enough practice or if people are limited on an individual level based on their hand eye coordination or biological factors, stick length vs tension, etc. Thanks man!
I think a good topic for your next video could be mental checklists while playing, n0thing is extremely good at vocalizing this whole also playing. In essence it’s when you use your map knowledge to make guesses on where players could be and when, then preaiming the angle. Making a list of where players are likely to be and when, moving down a sort of checklist when it’s not likely for anyone to be there anymore.
That slide snipe is soooooo nasty I'm sure those that get hit by it are quick to see they are in trouble for the rest of the match. Patty cakes is bonafide...the example box showing those angles of pie slicing and the comparison vantage points from both views are topnotch ♠️
I watched this yesterday and went home last night...super tired after work and very sleepy and beat...but i needed to get 19 more kills in Crucible for a quest and I struggle mightily in crucible all the time even when I'm fresh and running with my clan mates... Usually I'm lucky to get double digit kills and rarely over .5 efficiency ...my most ever I think was 18, but with a lower efficiency ... but those two runs last night (taking in account what I learned here) I got 22 kills and my efficiency was 0.79 & 0.9. now that might look crappy to you sweaty boyz out there...but for me especially tired after an extremely hot day in a warehouse that's a major improvement in my first two runs with this info! Now for me i'm going to watch this again and again to grind it in my head and see how if any improvement I can attain...but thus far i'm impressed...especially for me being a 54 old dude! can't wait to watch the next one!! thank you Pattycakes!!
I am not a Destiny Player, I just like more realistic shooters like Insurgency. But you had explained a pretty damn important concept with great depth in a casual game. U have my respect!
Part of me wants to work hard on these tips and be a great player but there other part is like "nah your here for a good time man don't sweat" lol nice video very informative
I play best aggressive with a shotty normally as well. I’ve had matches where I can snipe though, my best was a 7 kill streak with a sniper, they kept peaking my spot. On the map convergence
Destiny in particular though has a sort of head glitch situation on close corner peeking where you are much harder to headshot depending on which side you peek from due to the way the sniper is held
Slicing the Pie's real-life equivalent in military training is generally referred to as pie-ing, and is usually done over urban terrain. So yes, this does come from real-world tactical training, and is a very good way to keep yourself in an advantageous position if you do need to engage.
I'd like your views on how you try to force intelligent and experienced enemy teams into 3 potential 1v1s in Trials. Last Guardian Standing moments still feel somewhat like no-win scenarios against flawless-capable players.
Thank you, one of the main reasons I avoid pvp is precisely the lack of guidance and dealing with the frustration of losing to advanced or veteran players, and yes, I make that mistake of running around like a headless chicken. Do you have a video on how to master sniper rifles? Thank you for your tips sir
You should strafe peak to look for people then instantly peak out all the way you’ll always get the first shot and never peek slow because you’ll get shot in the limbs before you can see them
If anyone is curious about the fundamentals behind "slicing the pie", essentially where it comes from in CQB, this is a great video covering the topic: ua-cam.com/video/QSzTqh8ZsEE/v-deo.html Now of course it delves into particulars (like say footwork) that don't apply to Destiny, or any FPS games for that matter, but for the most part I find it quite thorough in explaining the thinking behind clearing a threat area. It also goes hand in hand in understanding then the mistakes we make when say we over-commit to a fight when we have bad positioning, and so helps us learn where we went wrong. Thanks for attending my TED Talk!
Nice video but this kinda techniques work if the other team is playing really passive but sometimes the teams play really fast and rapid and leave no opportunities for clearing angles slowly so what do you do if the opposing team is really good and flanks you from 3 different sides and the option for staying indoors with back to the wall is not possible as they use mountaintop too and limiting yourself to a corner also leaves the opportunity to get the free power ammo and wipe you, but at the same time you go outside and they flank you from all 3 sides and overwhelm you
I have to admit, this is some good quality content. I think of myself as an average player who does these things on accident or through instinct but not because I know why 😂 I think that's why I be getting clapped in trials sometimes. Anyways thanks for the vid! Got a sub and like from me
When I joined the Marines in 2008 "slicing the pie" is exactly what we did for clearing angles on windows and when entering doorways. We just did it really fast. lol I also tend to try an deal as much damage to other enemies as possible even if I know I'm not going to get the kill so my teammates can clean it up. Do people really not do this just naturally?
I'm sort of new to crucible (been sleeping on it for several months cos i suck). Hopefully your videos will be helpful. I do want to be unbroken someday although it seems like a far cry....
I always 'slice the pie' only thing that annoys me is i can't switch to left-handed to clear the other side easier lol. I think tom Clancy's future soldier 2 let you do this it used to give you an advantage over players that didn't do it.
The term "high level" in destiny in non existent. Very informative video but when you said that I died of laughter lol. I love Destiny to death but the game is the biggest meme like all the time.
It doesn't have the same tournament scene as bigger games, and will probably never be as competitive as something like CSGO, but there's still a large skill gap between the top players and average players
Pattycakes Gaming not anymore to be honest just because with so many cheaters in the game now specifically on PC that top players is a term used loosely now. There are whispers even with the highest tier players of cheating but no one speaks up out of fear of getting isolated out of the sweat scene for allegations so they either keep hush or eventually use similar mechanics to keep up with the scene. I understands what you’re saying and where you’re coming from but the gap keeps smaller and smaller everyday with this game especially the way bungie adjusts to it. Trying to improve and get better used to fun and challenging in this game but now there’s no point cause you get there there’s nothing but cheaters and hate all around so why bother.
very helpful i play r6s and my rank between diamond and platinum one and all this stuff you talking about very helpful in destiny __ you guys have to thank this man __
When you spoke to “Wall eating the bullet” we refer to that as “Muzzle Awareness “ great video !

Yes. No one. You are the first.
So talk about it without asking stupid questions.

I play best aggressive with a shotty normally as well. I’ve had matches where I can snipe though, my best was a 7 kill streak with a sniper, they kept peaking my spot. On the map convergence
Make so much sense. Great video.
Destiny in particular though has a sort of head glitch situation on close corner peeking where you are much harder to headshot depending on which side you peek from due to the way the sniper is held
Helpful stuff here buddy 👏
We need more ! thank u for this awesome video :)
That no scope jump snipe headshot at 1:10 tho...😨
Good vid. Learned some stuff.
Amazing tips man
Patty is the fucking man. Great info and your personal skills outshine most destiny players I've seen. Keep it up man

I love your videos, maybe a video about what loadout for what maps to use, I would really appreciate that.

Yes, clean up the kill. So many times I leave someone one hit, and they stand there like....duh.

I'd like your views on how you try to force intelligent and experienced enemy teams into 3 potential 1v1s in Trials. Last Guardian Standing moments still feel somewhat like no-win scenarios against flawless-capable players.
I learned these techniques naturally in R6 Siege, since the game itself is very slow pace, fast ttk (1 shot headshot) and somewhat encourages camping.
Maybe cover important locations to remember on popular competitive maps (mostly talking about 3 v 3)
I think I’ve been doing the slicing the pie method for along time without me knowing
MIND BLOWN
You had my full attention until you hit that mid air no scope headshot... I had to pick my jaw up off the floor and rewind.
I already use these alot i just wasnt conscience of my distance to corners. Ill probably pay more attention to that now.
In the army we called it "prying" kind of like a crowbar.
Thanks for the info..awesome!
I have played so much halo. So very very much halo, that I unintentionally I puss this strategy
Cheers m8, helps a lot
Amazing video! I peek that new twitter lower thirds

It really helps thanks! Even tho im late.
You need wayyyyyyyyy more followers
Yes pie the corner is what we was taught
Got a sub and like from me
Thanks!
A trade kill is when you and your opponent kill each other at the same time, not dying and having your teammate finish him off
I used to do this until sbmm was removed and now I just run around the map
When I joined the Marines in 2008 "slicing the pie" is exactly what we did for clearing angles on windows and when entering doorways. We just did it really fast. lol
I also tend to try an deal as much damage to other enemies as possible even if I know I'm not going to get the kill so my teammates can clean it up. Do people really not do this just naturally?
I'm sort of new to crucible (been sleeping on it for several months cos i suck). Hopefully your videos will be helpful. I do want to be unbroken someday although it seems like a far cry....
gabriel aleactus you can get it, just takes practice and a good mindset
I always 'slice the pie' only thing that annoys me is i can't switch to left-handed to clear the other side easier lol.
I think tom Clancy's future soldier 2 let you do this it used to give you an advantage over players that didn't do it.
simply amazing...
I JUST realized what if destiny 2 had a forge like halo and with the option to put enemy AI in their maps
very helpful i play r6s and my rank between diamond and platinum one and all this stuff you talking about very helpful in destiny __ you guys have to thank this man __
Thanks!
Now how can I incorporate this into my Splatoon 2 gameplay 🤔
