it is a truly unbelievable machine Nord stage 3. Thank you a lot, Brian, for such specific explanations! Great job, great videos. The best tutorials about Nord stage 3
Another Stage 3 tip: You don't have to move to the location you want to save a patch to first. Whether using "Store" or "Store as..", whenever you're on the screen that has "As:" in the bottom left, you can use the "List" rotary knob to change the location you save to. This is useful when you find an existing patch you like, but tweak around the settings a bit and want to save your change but keep the original. You can pick a new location to not overwrite the original.
Hey andstuff. Thanks for the helpful tip. Yes, I believe I eventually stumbled upon this technique, but it wasn't obvious at first in the beginning. I also don't often talk about it (maybe once in all my videos). I'll be sure to mention this tip in future vids where it makes sense because that feature is convenient indeed. Thanks for watching and contributing!
Hi Mike !!! AMAZING, AWESOME, GREAT TUTORIAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOUUUUUU !!!!!!!!!! I was just thinking how to do this, and was exploring different approaches, but your's is absolutly simpler compared to what I was trying. It was THE TUTORIAL I was looking for to do this with my NS3. You have read my mind!! And the explanation is VERY clear, simple, sintetic, and didactical. Better, IMPOSIBLE. Another great video, as you always do.
Hey Jape Music - So glad you like it! It was rewarding to produce. A thing to note about all this. Individual samples by their very nature are not intended to do full recordings of an entire song. Instead, they are typically only a few seconds in length and traditionally representing notes from a sampled instrument. What I did here was more of an "experiment" on what's possible rather than it necessarily being the best way to play along with an entire song. Also note that the sample heard here is just the first verse of the song. Thanks again for watching and for your comments! 😃 . Good luck with your exploring!
Yes Mike, it is as you explain in this comment, BUT.... sometimes you need to trigger a sample like this. An example (for what I need this functionality): we play Genesis covers, mainly 70s era, but we are looking to play some "newer" pop hit, and we choose "No Son Of Mine", and I was thinking how to trigger the "elephant" sound. I was trying through midi and an external DAW. Your method is much simpler for this kind of situations. PERFECT !!! 👏👏👏
Jape Music Ah Perfect! Yes - the Elephant sound! Love it. Gosh, I forgot just how much I love Genesis. What you just described would be perfect for this situation. Good luck!
Hi Timo! Wow, congrats on your brand new NS3! There is now a healthy amount of videos for you to explore on my channel. Also looking to do a comprehensive course before the year is out on Nord Electro 5 and Nord Stage 3 at www.mykeystomusic for those who want to get serious about mastering everything. Have fun with your keyboard and thanks for your comment!
Hello @Shein Fiilan Great question. So the answer is yes and no. Yes, you can create a sample just like I did and use that on your Nord electro 6 without any problem. In fact, the process is nearly identical. I have a free course on how to work with Samples for your Nord keyboard on my main website called "Master the Nord Sample Editor" found at www.MyKeysToMusic.com. But there are two things you can't do with this: 1) You can't have the Electro 6 automatically "hold" the note for you. You'd have to keep the key pressed. Some say a roll of pennies works great for this. 2) You can only play one sample at a time. So, I was using a Mellotron along with Carl's voice in my video. You'd be able to have Carl's voice singing but you could only accompany that with either the Piano or the Organ from your Electro because the "synth" engine is already in use playing the sample. Hope that helps clarify things a bit. The Nord Electro 6 is a great keyboard but it can only play one sample/Synth sound at a time, unfortunately.
Great video!! The chords/bassline are a little off but mostly on the right track. Sounds great! I'm starting to want to purchase Nord Stage 3...haha. Also, fun fact but it's actually not Brian singing the lead on this song. It's his youngest brother Carl who, in my opinion, had the best voice of the Beach Boys. Brian does sing in the harmonies...and Brian's high falsetto part at the end is my personal favorite part of the song.
Thanks @Sloopfan3 (great channel name by the way - we all know you're a Beach Boys fan with that name) 👍🏼 So, I think I may have realized that Carl was the one to sing this but I don't believe I specifically mentioned that in the video. I agree, Carl had the best voice and wow, what I wouldn't do to hear them sing together today. Ya, the Stage 3 is a boatload of fun. Here is a link to the Discovery Series where I highlight notable sounds and songs all done with the Stage 3: ua-cam.com/play/PLvND2qkkWygqahJWvI75kYCQo6nPMJA7i.html And if you like the Beach Boys (silly question), have a look at my Theremin video which features some nice tie-ins to Brian Wilson and such: ua-cam.com/video/ngUiwvuMGMo/v-deo.html
Thank you @Steve Rockstein - Unfortunately, the Electro 6 is limited to a single synth layer at a time. For a Nord with more layers, you'd have to consider a Stage 3 (with two layers) or a Wave 2 (with four layers). Yes, I realize these come at a significantly higher price point as well! Great question and it's one that gets asked quite a bit.
Hi Claudio! Thank you for your comment and request. Creating videos on the Nord Sample editor are definitely on the list but there is a lot of videos planned ahead of that. Stay tuned, it's likely videos like that will arrive late summer of this year. I know, that's a long time from now. 😮 Thanks for watching!
Hi Claudio! Hope all is well, as you may be aware, I recently released a video on the Nord Sample Editor which can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/dn1oAc0VOtE/v-deo.html Take care! 😄
1) Not knocking the Nord - which is a great keyboard - but that mellotron simulation is a dog. My ancient (1991) Korg 01/W FD can beat that. (It gets the warbly flute on Strawberry Fields just about spot-on.) Just get yourself a mellotron soft synth though and be done with it. 2) God Only Knows is deservedly on everyone's perennial masterpiece list, but have you ever considered how illogical the "I may not always love you" line is? 3) Dog or no dog, I love the way the voicing and context of the F#m7 chord on the word "without" sounds like. Just lovely.
1) Thanks netterstyl for your comments. I'm happy someone mentioned the mellotron today because I'm planning a future video "deep dive discovery" for the mellotron as it relates to Nord. But, I'll be sure to check out a mellotron soft synth or two to compare and see if I can tease out some details and perhaps even a comparison or two. This is a good idea and I think I've barely scratched the surface on where this can go. 2) Not only are the lyrics illogical in some cases, so is the melody line. It's quite peculiar and yet works so well! 3) This entire song is so interesting to me because on the surface you scratch your head and wonder why it all works. I think that's part of what makes it special. I just fell in love with the vocals by themselves and promised myself I'd do a video on that segment. So, that's why it became the centerpiece of this video which really started out as a Nord Sample test. But when you use isolated vocals of one the finest songs ever written, it quickly doubled as a mini Brian Wilson discovery. Thanks for sharing your thoughts today.!
Hi mik. I'm not sure why that message on the site states that the software is currently not compatible with the Nord Stage 3. I'll do some experimentation and let you know. Obviously I had no issue creating the sample here for this video. Now, I'm curios to find out what's going on. The sample used on the video was quite simple, so maybe it works under certain conditions. I'll post another comment when I find out more.
Hey Pat. So, I checked this out just now. Please double check that your Nord Keyboard is on and connected to the computer via the USB prior to attempting the move of the sample into the sound manager. If the sound manager doesn't see a connected Nord keyboard, dragging samples like this will produce a circle with a line through it. If your keyboard is connected and on and you are still getting a circle with a line, try reinstalling the Sound manager. I tested this with a new Windows 10 laptop just now by using only a single USB cable between the computer and the Nord (nothing else connected). I had also freshly installed the Nord Sound Manager which will (by default) install the necessary Clavia USB driver in the background if needed. See if any of these things help.
@@MyKeysToMusic I uninstalled sound manager restarted he computer and reinstalled but will still not drag into sound manager though I have installed other samples
Took 10 minutes to achieve what a Roland fa8 can do in thirty seconds. I own a NORD and the sound is amazing for live stage. But the interface for programming is incredibly convoluted and complex. Really not user friendly at all. You don’t mention how the good work you put can then be saved for a live performance program buttons 1 to 5. No point trying to remember m53 when you are on gig drunk, turning the dial infinitely then missing the start of the song. Nord doesn’t handle sample live looping very well at all.
Hi Rob! Thanks for your comments. I tend to agree with what you are saying here. I approached this video as more of a discovery/experiment rather than a practical use of the sampler capabilities. I do also agree that the live performance buttons (or song lists even) are much better than m53! I find that I often flip too far one way or the other when using the knob. Thanks for watching!
