My band is learning this song and I can't believe I've never played it before, as a keyboard player that found my way in the '80s! I use a NS3 and found this video EXTREMELY helpful. Great work. I've been subscribed for a long time and enjoy your helpful videos. I create and share a bunch of sounds on the Nord User Forum for both NS2 and NS3. Haven't bumped up to NS4 yet...still waiting for that thing to get a bit more stable.

@cowgerbry Hey Bryan, this sounds like a good idea, and yes, I think the 3rd layer would completely solve the issue where you could have decent sound without having to struggle to play the fast past in octaves. I assume you have an NS4 at this point?

So if you select the Synth engine on panel A, you have no option to then split the keyboard and have the pad on the left come from the sample engine on panel A? If so, it seems a bit lame for a $3500 board.
The answer is mostly yes, there is this built-in limitation. Since we're using the synth engine for Panel A, you can't have two sounds happening on the same panel. However, if you were to make your own sample by recording sounds into the computer for example, you can assign any number of different sample sounds to any range of keys all on the same panel. The difference here is that a sample would be a recorded sound versus a synth that is electronically produced from the synth engine itself. Obviously making your own split samples like this is potentially more work and may not be as effective at the end of the day, but it is a way to have many sounds on a single panel - although a stretch given the context of what you're talking about here. There is many a day I long for having a panel C, D, and E for just this reason. Good observation and one that people do in fact complain about from time to time given the price etc.

Great job on this video Marc (as always)! I did notice one trivial mistake though. @18:16 the keyboard split on the Intro instrument should be C4, not F4, so the first note you play is actually playing the Pad instead of the intro synth!
Thanks Dave! Ya, I recorded the performance parts a few days ahead of the explanation. I later realized that the split works better lower which I adjusted for the explanation part. You have good eyes. There is one more error in the video two where I explain the amount of compression, but we don't use compression for this song. Thanks for watching!

The decision between the Stage 3 HP versus the Stage 3 Compact comes down to the following decisions: 1) HP versus waterfall keybed feel and response 2) The HP has "3 more keys" than the Compact 3) Digital Drawbars for the HP versus physical drawbars for the Compact 4) Overall size and weight differences between the two 5) Price Difference between the two 6) Loudness of the the HP keybed. (Similar to #1 above but I gave it its own category.) 7) The ability to use a "half-moon switch" with the compact that you don't have with the HP. @@MyKeysToMusic Thank you for opening up my options, Currently using Roland Jupiter 50 & it is frustrating that after 2 sets of about 35 song I have to load self-made program patches for the next 1 or 2 sets since the memory is small & not expandable - how will this be different on the stage 3 ? @@junkokinoko7277 Well, you'll still run out of memory quickly with Nord keyboards as well in the areas of sample memory especially. However, you do get a total of 400 program slots of which 100 are empty when it arrives. But the keyboard comes full of existing samples out of the box and if you want to switch them out for something, it oftentimes means you have to delete an existing sample to add a new one. However, you'll find that there are a good many samples that are "not in use" from day one that are expendable making room for the ones you care about most. But yes, people are critical of the memory capacity on Nord keyboards in general, and just about everyone wants more memory. However, compared to what you've described with the Jupiter 50, perhaps it will already be better than that! NOTE: there is no way to install/connect an external drive to "hold more stuff" with Nord keyboards. All the only storage is on the board itself and you have to "swap" one for another. The expansion has a limit but perhaps that limit is a bit higher than what you are going through with the Roland. Swapping things out isn't too bad as they make a fairly robust application to help with this called the "Nord Sound Manager" (ua-cam.com/video/32UBN7Dj4Is/v-deo.html)
Haha - I've added quite a few over the years now that I look back at the collection. They are both fun and also challenging to do. And in the end, I walk away with all sorts of interesting background knowledge of the given topic and it hopefully allows us to re-live those moments when we first heard these songs. It's weird to me because it looks like the notes you are playing are a half step different than the sounded notes. However I must note, I play in a cover band and sometimes when I practice I have learned the music for the recording and come to practice and everyone is playing it a half step down. Thank goodness ns3 has transpose. But it could be screwing up my ear. Lol 🙈
@@MsLicaSto No worries on this. If I had a nickel for every song I learned in the wrong key... And yes, thank goodness for transpose! Also, be warned that many online sheet music retailers and websites will present chords in the WRONG KEY from the original. They do this largely to make things easier to play for beginners I assume? And on that same topic, sometimes it's easier to learn songs in a key signature that's easier to perform on the keyboard itself versus the original. This is especially true for "jamming". For example, a band might want to play a blues in E (because guitar players like that sort of thing as it's easier for them typically to play in E). Yet, I'm better playing the blues based of C. You can transpose the board to have the blues sounding in in E while you tear it up in C (or whatever key you are best to solo in). That's just one of the many tricks I've used over the years. Take care and good luck learning this song. As I mentioned in this video, I'm playing the keyboard part using octaves which some advanced keyboard players have told me that this is not easy to do. So, you may want to go with the single-finger method. In fact, the keyboard player from a-ha plays it with a single finger from what I have seen and from what people have told me.
