Well, thanks so much lenmusic! Your appreciation and comments here are very welcome. I look forward to continuing the journey so thanks for coming along for the ride!
@JumpIrina I'm Happy to hear that these videos are helpful! By the way, my main website offers more free and paid courses, and there is lots of additional NS3 content on my Patreon if you want to go even further. Enjoy your Nord! 🎹
Thank you so much for this treasure of information, the Nord synth is definitely complicated and needs to be explained. here is what I found about Sound initial and program init, you could initial panel A or B with sound init individually. If you'd like to start fresh A& B panels then use the Program init.
Thank you @Joe Palawan - Thanks for the comment! In most of these early videos, I focused on just resetting the synth engine itself and paid less attention to resetting the entire program, but you bring up a great point here and I'm glad you mentioned it.
Thanks for the tips. I believe this one was one of my earlier videos but it is interesting to watch the earlier ones versus the later ones. Had I to do it all over again, I believe the second round of training for the Synth engine would be improved on a number of levels not least of which is my understanding of the synth engine now versus back then.
Hello @Breezy January (great UA-cam channel name by the way). Glad you like the tutorials! If you are looking for even more deep dives and lots of exclusive content, consider visiting my main website, where I provide both free and paid courses for the Nord Stage 3.

Good job Marc. I am a very advanced user of this synth, and I think what you are doing will really help a lot of folks out, as this is the only video series on this subject as far as I know. One tip though, if you have the latest OS installed (1.6) when holding shift and sound init, you can double click the sound init button and not have to keep clicking ok. Again, really good job and I applaud you!
Hey Obwanz 1! Thanks for the comment and for the tip - that was great one! Going to pin this comment at the top for a bit so people can read about that.
My Keys To Music Awesome 👍 Yes, I know the NS3 backwards, and have programmed several hundred synth presets, so feel free to ask anything, although it looks like you definitely have it down 😀
If you want, send me your email, and I’ll send you some presets (bundle) I just finished a THX intro patch that really shows off the synth and morphing!
Marc this is the greatest tutorial series on the Nord Stage 3 I've seen. Easy to understand, to the point, and I can't imagine the time/effort put into making this. Thank you!
Thank you so much Garrett! Really appreciate you stopping by and writing this comment. It is wonderful to see the impact videos can make on the community and fun to learn from one another along the way too! Enjoy making music...
Good thing I listened until the end and your mention of the frequency cut off control knob in red. Jeez mine was on zero this whole time, duh me feel stupid.
@Laserman YES! I know exactly what you mean, which is why I mentioned it in the video. Simply put, this happened to me a couple of times when I first started, so I figured someone else is bound to fall into the same bear trap. 🎹
Just started on my new Stage 3 (HP76) - Nord have now added a separate ‘Osc Config’ knob in the Oscillator section instead of having to Shift the ’Osc 2 Pitch’ knob. Huge thanks for great videos 🙏
Hello @John. Thanks for the comment and congrats on your new Nord Stage 3! So, In the pro course, I created new lessons (mostly) that use the new panel layout if you want to check that out on my main website. In addition, I made a video addressing the different panel layouts here: ua-cam.com/video/--KaUGMb67U/v-deo.html
Just a heads up for anyone else on a newer Nord. I think the newer knob layouts may be a bit different. At 14:34, I actually have a separate config knob (between the OSC 1 and OSC 2 knobs) to enable the second oscillator. Awesome vid, thanks!
Hello Trevor - thanks for your comment. Yes, you are 100% correct. They released a newer version of the panel and changed a few things along the way. Here is me talking about all this in a dedicated video: ua-cam.com/video/--KaUGMb67U/v-deo.html
THANK YOU! Your tutorial videos are the best. Just finished watching all four Stage 3 tutorials and they all made sense. Thanks for helping musician like who love synth but not necessary good at reading manuals (I DID read it... then was too painful). I enjoyed every minutes of your tutorials and now I'm totally ready for my gigs (well almost).
Thanks a lot Marc for your tutorials! They are explained ground up and easy to understand without getting lost in the complexities. I just purchased a Nord Stage 4 as my first Nord Piano and I really hope you make a tutorial for the Synth Section as well. I can't yet wrap my head around it.
This video series and your introduction to Synths has made the incredibly daunting feat of learning my Stage 3 a blast. I love my Nord Stage 3 but it's an instrument that has genuinely overwhelmed me to an insane degree. Then I found this, it's been amazing and made a monster instrument into a friend. Appreciation is an understatement!
So happy to hear this Juan. I agree, you'll have a whole other level of appreciation once you figure it all out. 🎵 Keep up the good work learning your instrument! 🎹
Thanks Brian! (Not the first time I've heard that or something similar). In a way, I can remain neutral by not being on the payroll so that's a good thing at times too 😎 🎹. Take care and enjoy your Nord keyboard (assuming you have one)...
Thank you so much for helping me getting trough these stages of understanding my new keyboard!! Couldn’t have done it without you!so grateful for you doing that work
Glad you like that Mathilde! Thanks for your comment today - it helps me understand where the needs are and what is helping. FYI I'm just now recreating the entire synth section of the "Master the Nord Stage 3" course found here (www.MyKeysToMusic.com). The new lessons are based on the newer style Nord Stage 3 and I have a better/easier/quicker way to teach the synth now (I hope). 😄Thanks again!

Thank you, very much. I got here after hearing a video of Tedeschi-Trucks. I was curious and this approach is helpful. My first 2 were the yamaha CS-5 and the Roland JX-3P... the Nord looks good.
Hey @Jay Fulton thanks for your comment. Interesting that Tedeschi-Trucks uses a Nord Stage 2 so somehow my video must have been suggested? In any case, yes the Stage 3 is a very flexible keyboard for live performance - covers a lot of sonic bases. Cheers!
This is awesome Marc. Just unpacked my Stage3 and this is the best introduction/course a musician can desire. Nord must be thankful. Greetings from Amsterdam.
So glad to hear this Steven! Hey, congrats on your new Nord Stage 3! Lots more videos to see here and when you're ready, you can consider the entire course: www.mykeystomusic.com. Thanks for watching! 👍

@luisfernandes1273 Hello Luis! The keyboards are similar in a lot of ways (especially in the Piano and Organ sections). The synth section is similar in many ways as well, but there are key differences in the way the synth engine works and more features to explore/learn. I have dedicated my time to do this specifically for the Nord Stage 4 in my Pro course found at www.MyKeysToMusic.com called "Master the Nord Stage 4." I may do an Intro to Synthesizers section (for free) as well down the road for the NS4 - but for now, my detailed synth lessons for the NS4 can be found in the pro course. Thanks! - Marc 🎶 🎹
Thanks David! Nord Stage 3 compact - yup, that's a great choice and I like how you are researching/learning all about it ahead of time! I've been in your shoes. Had the Electro 5 and next synth was Stage 3.
Hi Karl. Thanks so much for saying this. I have a passion for taking something complex and breaking it down into understandable concepts. The Nord synth engine provides a unique challenge for sure. Selfishly, I learn more by teaching, so this is as much for me as it is for the people watching 😜 You may have noticed that part 3 released today as well. Cheers and thanks for watching!
Amazing job. I even haven't watched this tutorial yet, just I've scheduled to see! but This is what I really need that much! Thanks. I am going to thank you one more time after watching it =)
Hi Marc. My church owns the Stage 3. If I reinitialize the synth engine to 0 and experiment, do I need to put the settings back to the the default so I don't change any of the sounds that someone else might use with the synth engine?
@Rick Johnson - thanks Rick - great question. The safest way to experiment like this is to start with a blank program. Navigate all the way to the end of the program list where the blank programs are and pick one to start with there. That way you can build your synth sounds and click "Store" without the worry of breaky anything that already exists. After you do that and you settle on something you like, you can optionally store the synth preset itself independent of the program. In this way, you can use your synth with other programs that already exist easily. Storing a synth preset works nearly the same as storing a program. It's tricky the first time you do it but just follow the screens. You'll find the synth preset store button under the LFO section of the synth. Hope that gets you started!
Thank you James! Yes, you have to get a little synth in your life (always a good thing). Although, I do love the pianos a lot and recently have come to appreciate the organ a lot more over the past several months too.
Outstanding Job, Marc!!! You are an excellent teacher, love the format and your presentation; not to mention the subject matter. This is very much appreciated and keep up the Great work! Subscribed, Liked, and commented!!!
@drestaura_2 the Nord website has both pianos and well as "samples" that are downloadable for use on a given Nord keyboard. Those samples also include selected sounds that can be used for organs and pads played via the synth engine. Typically, however, when it comes to organs, if your Nord keyboard has an "organ engine," you'd use that to generate the sound, not samples. When it comes to pads, typically, that's done with the synth engine either by using a sample played through the synth engine or the synth engine itself (assuming you have a Wave 2 or a Stage 2/3/4 keyboard).
@@drestaura_2 I get that! Hey, you should check out my free and pro courses available on my website when you get a chance. I believe it's the most complete training out there and comes with a private community where you can ask questions along the way: www.MyKeysToMusic.com
My Keys To Music How do I watch the Synthesizer Fundamentals course? I keep clicking on where it says “get started” and it keeps bringing me to the same intro page.
Hi David, thanks for your comment and question. So, technically I could do this but I'm not of the intent/request. Would having a video with just keyboard and hands be more direct/easier to understand?
@@daviddelaconcepcion7754 Thanks for the suggestion. In a lot of my training videos in the actual course, I tend to have more lessons with just the hands only (because these videos are actually easier to do). But for the channel, I like to have a fair amount of talking head as I mix training, with my commentary as well as provide updates and what gets me excited about what I'm doing. So the bottom line is, if it's pure training, perhaps there's no need for talking head. But since it's UA-cam, I'm trying to connect with people as a UA-cam creator so I feel this is best accomplished by people watching me on the screen a bit more. Thanks for watching and making this detailed suggestion.
Got a Stage 3 for Christmas. Most of the buttons don’t do or show what it shows on your tutorial? Is it because I have a different software version (2.54) or.....?
Hi em... congrats on your Stage 3! That’s likely because when I made these videos, I had the older panel layout. I have since updated these lessons to the newer style keyboard layout available with my online courses at www.MyKeysToMusic.com. Enjoy your keyboard! 🎹
Love your work. Thanks for educating us. Question. With the envelope control being 3 pole and not 4, does that mean that Sforzando (Sfz) is not supported?
Hi Scadaboy-oh-boy. So, the answer to this question is no, Sforzando in the purest sense is not supported exactly with the lack of the 4th pole. Although you can kind of imitate it a bit if you introduce the Mod Envelope with a decay. (i.e. You'd have a brighter sound at the beginning and as you hold the note, the Mod envelope would decrease the high frequencies giving you an effect of Sforzando via high-frequency reduction rather than purely by volume). I've never head it described like this but I like where you are going here with these thoughts and provides another way to describe the differences between 3 and 4 pole envelopes to a musician who might be new to synthesis.
Hi Marc! Always thanks for your dedicated videos! I'm writing a comment just to ask something! Are there any online education programs or series of videos explaining about the basics of synthesis? From how an analog synthesizer works, to tips and examples for creating specific sounds, etc. I watched your tutorial abount the basics of synthesis, but I wanted to learn more and deeper about the synthesizer. Since I've purchased a Nord Stage 3 a few weeks ago, and I am going to use it for many years, I thought it is necessary to study about the synthesizer from the fundamentals. It will be a great support if you could recommend any good programs! Thank you :)
Hello @오제희 Your timing couldn't be better for a question like this. Check out a video I just made on this exact topic! ua-cam.com/video/5sP0xv6LX1U/v-deo.html
So, it sounds like you already know you want a Stage 3. If that's the case, you have 3 options: the 73 key waterfall keyboard (semi-weighted) with physical drawbars, the 76 key Hammer Action portable with digital drawbars, or the 88 key full-weighted also with the digital drawbars. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages. I explain the differences between all 3 Nord Stages in a little more detail when I compare the Stage 3 to the Electro 6 here in this video: ua-cam.com/video/av3GxXakeaM/v-deo.html
Hello Marc, Thank you very much! I'd like to ask you whether you know how it is possible to use the Attack, Decay, and Release not only with the Synth, but with the Organ and Piano section too? Daniel
Hi Dani. Great question here. The answer is mostly "no" but there is one small exception to that. So, the ADSR feature only works with the synth engine. Therefore that functionality doesn't extend to either the Organ or the Piano engines at all. Now with the Piano samples from the Piano Engine, the ADSR is already "baked into" the sample creating an ideal situation to best represent those sounds. The same applies to the organ engine where the envelope (in the case of the organ, it's an instant attack, full sustain, and instant release) is representative of exactly how organs produce their sounds. So, you'd think - why change a good thing and mess with the spirit of what a sound is supposed to emulate right? Well, humans are a bit more creative than that and sometimes we want to do crazy things "just because". So, give this a try: Turn on your synth engine. Select "Wave" as your sound selection. Then select "Organ 1" in that category. You'll hear a similar organ sound that the organ engine would produce but yet you can adjust the envelope! I cover this concept more in my synth training videos parts 2, 3, 4, etc. So, I recommend you keep watching the synth series here on UA-cam. Oh, and since the synth engine can also play samples, you'll find that there are piano samples available to you within the synth engine whereby you can adjust the envelope as well. So, again, the pure answer to your question is no, but if you get creative with the samples playable in the synth engine, the answer becomes "yes, sort of" 😊 Hope that helps!
@OneGunnEntertainmnent Hi there OneGunn! - Great question. So, first you have to understand that Song Mode simply points to existing programs. Therefore, when you "Save to Song Mode" you are not really saving a new program, but rather pointing that song selection to an existing program. The song mode list is nothing more than a pointer system to existing programs. So, first create a program that you want for a given song along with any synth or organ settings. Then go into Song mode and set a given location to point back to that program. This is how you build a set list pulling from existing programs. Let me know if there are more questions.
Great tutorial Mark thanks a lot! Wondering if you can help with this question, I am trying to use the same tremolo effect to control both my synth engine and the organ engine at the same time on the same panel. Do you know if this is possible?
Hi Samuel. Technically speaking, the official tremolo effect can only be invoked on a single sound engine on a single panel at a time. So, I don't think this is possible. Of course, it is possible by using two panels and assigning the synth to one panel and the organ to the other, each having the tremolo effect assigned. Thanks for the question!
Have studied synthesis but it is a different thing when you study it abstract without an instrument in front of you!!! This is fantastic watching this on the Nord Stage 3 being hands on
Cheers for all the help on the Nord stage! I’m wondering if it’s possible to use multiple synth engines on the same panel? So if I for example could have four synth engines running at the same time?
Hello Dan. Unforunately this is not possible. Only two synths at the same time (Panel A and B). For four synth layers, you'd need to look at a Nord Wave 2 or a Nord Lead A1 or the like. On a similar note, if you haven't already checked it out, I did a Chariots of Fire video where I featured 4 Nord keyboards which provided 11 synth/sample engines and 2 piano engines: ua-cam.com/video/-_bJlgLlutU/v-deo.html It demonstrates the power of the Nord synths when used together - especially having multiple arpeggiators which come in extremely handy on a tune like Chariots.

Hi ApolloSynths! I think I understand exactly what you mean here. You would think that by knowing the Lead 2X, you'd have a breeze of a time with the A1, but they tend to be a bit like apples versus oranges. Now that I have wrapped my head around the A1, it all makes sense. There are a few things that I wish were a little different but overall, it gets the job done for most things. Thanks for your input.
@@MyKeysToMusic the Lead has two discrete oscillators, with a separate mode for unison. I really prefer the control that gives, but I can't complain about the engine in the Stage with how much it can do.

hi, i have studio logic sledge 2.0 and a Nord Stage 3, and i find that the sledge is more powerful, aggresive, expressive than the Nord Stage 3 synth section. Any comments?
Hi Carlos! You could be 100% correct in this assertion and when it comes to sound, I think beauty is in the ear of the listener. 😃Truth be told, I know so little about these other brands that I don't feel like my comments would come from any place of authority or wisdom here. I think Nord has it's own sound engine mechanism and perhaps it's own unique way of doing things and its own way of sounding (for the most part). But I do have first-hand experience to say that the Nord Stage 3 synth can do a lot (but not everything). So, I think when comparing one brand to another, I attempt to stay out of those discussions in general. My goal is to help those with Nord master it so that they feel comfortable with the keyboard and to assist with which Nord to purchase. On the other hand, I have this crazy dream to buy one or two synths from every major manufacture and provide unless reviews and comparisons for each. The channel would be huge, but that would turn me from a musician into a salesperson which I don't really want to do at the end of the day. Like you, I often wonder if we put the Nord up against other synths from a pure sound standpoint, would it be less powerful, less aggressive, and less expressive? Maybe yes, maybe no. That answer is largely one of personal taste but I totally get what you are saying here and you may, in fact be 100% correct. Now, if someone wants to lend me their Sledge 2.0 for a month, I'd be happy to do a review and sound comparison. Studio Logic, are you listening?

Had I to do it all over again, I believe the second round of training for the Synth engine would be improved on a number of levels not least of which is my understanding of the synth engine now versus back then.
Yes I would love to learn more
Sounds good Nathan. The full course is available on my website using the links under the video..

Hi Josh! Thanks so much for your comment and happy to know of your excitement here. Happy Holidays to you too!

Could you do one of these with the Nord Stage 4 or are both nord stages similar?
@luisfernandes1273 Hello Luis! The keyboards are similar in a lot of ways (especially in the Piano and Organ sections). The synth section is similar in many ways as well, but there are key differences in the way the synth engine works and more features to explore/learn. MUCH APPRECIATED!!! Thank you 🙏🙏🙏😊❤️
Hi Seb. Thanks for your comment - it has been fun seeing the impact these videos have had on the Nord community. Thanks for watching!
Well taught Marc, time for me to give the organ and pianos a break anyway!
Thank you James! Yes, you have to get a little synth in your life (always a good thing). Although, I do love the pianos a lot and recently have come to appreciate the organ a lot more over the past several months too.

Do Nordstage website have pads, string, or organs to download to the nord keboards?
@drestaura_2 the Nord website has both pianos and well as "samples" that are downloadable for use on a given Nord keyboard. Those samples also include selected sounds that can be used for organs and pads played via the synth engine. Typically, however, when it comes to organs, if your Nord keyboard has an "organ engine," you'd use that to generate the sound, not samples. When it comes to pads, typically, that's done with the synth engine either by using a sample played through the synth engine or the synth engine itself (assuming you have a Wave 2 or a Stage 2/3/4 keyboard).
@MyKeysToMusic appreciate it a lot I still going to watch the videos , barely starting 😄Thank you!👍

Hi David, thanks for your comment and question. So, technically I could do this but I'm not of the intent/request. Would having a video with just keyboard and hands be more direct/easier to understand?
@@MyKeysToMusic yes, I find those videos a little easier to follow.
Love it!!!! Thank you!
Thanks for watching David!
Since I've purchased a Nord Stage 3 a few weeks ago, and I am going to use it for many years,
I thought it is necessary to study about the synthesizer from the fundamentals.
It will be a great support if you could recommend any good programs!
Thank you :)
Hello @오제희 Your timing couldn't be better for a question like this. Check out a video I just made on this exact topic! ua-cam.com/video/5sP0xv6LX1U/v-deo.html
For a music producer what Nord Stage model should I get
So, it sounds like you already know you want a Stage 3.
You the man
Thomas! Always nice to hear from you. Thanks for stopping by.

Happy to do it Glezsa. Thanks for watching!
Thank you - Well done your tutorial is very detailed and you explained it very clear! New sub to your channel :)
Love to hear this! Thanks so much!
Hello Marc,
Thank you very much!
@@MyKeysToMusic Thank you Marc for for your fast and detailed reply, I really appreciate it!
@@danibiljarszki4679 Happy to help!
Marc, how do you save Synths and Organs to song mode?
Very good
Have studied synthesis but it is a different thing when you study it abstract without an instrument in front of you!!! This is fantastic watching this on the Nord Stage 3 being hands on

GRACIAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Y con subtitulo, eres lo máximo!! Genio!!
FYI "barrilete cosmico" comes from Diego Maradona's most beautiful and spectacular score in soccer history. World Cup'86 against England. The narrator lost it end said "Cosmic Kite, What planet are you from", as he was flying between player that couldn't stop him.
In other words, it's the highest compliment ever in Argentina. And Javier is right. This videos are amazing. Thank you.
I meant "players". Many of them. Goalkeeper included.
Hello
I signed up for a one year subscription for the Nord Stage 3 tutorials. Before signing up I sent you an email with some questions but never received a response. Now that I'm a paid up student, how do I contact you should I have a specific question regarding the training videos or any question regarding some issue I'm having with my Stage?
Hello, @Mark Zyla Thanks for signing up! In the Welcome Videos of the Nord Stage 3 course, I talk about my Email address and put it below that video. Also, I don't recall getting another Email from you directly and I apologize if I missed that.
@@MyKeysToMusic Thanks Marc!
@Mark Zyla I just tried to email you just now on the Frontier domain address from the one I had on file. It bounced back on me. So, something is up with your Email I believe.
I've got extensive experience with various synths and the Lead 2X, but this A1 engine has such a weird osc section.
Hi, question: where can I find the synth fundemental course?
@Nathan Daniel you can find the course here on my main site: www.MyKeysToMusic.com Thanks for your interest!
Will you do a series on the Nord Electro 6?
Hey Chad! A Nord Electro 6 series is in fact planned but the Nord Stage 3 comes first. I just received my Nord Electro 6 last week and I do have a starting Electro 6 playlist you may want to check out if you haven't already: ua-cam.com/play/PLvND2qkkWygrlBzRZG1C2XVPXY5FyvyMc.html For pro training on the Electro 6, you'll likely see that Feb/March timeframe with a possible dedicated course on www.mykeystomusic.com as well. Thanks for stopping by!
hi, i have studio logic sledge 2.0 and a Nord Stage 3, and i find that the sledge is more powerful, aggresive, expressive than the Nord Stage 3 synth section.
@@MyKeysToMusic Thanks Marc!!!! for your answer! Thank God i don't have to choose, i have them both!
@@FERRABONE Yes, you can have your cake and eat it too! 🎂
