Here's weekly dose of your catastrophic engine forensics! Every week you can find a new teardown of some abused, misused and/or poorly designed engine. Here are some of my favorites:

Today's teardown is a core return from an engine we sold. We sold an engine out of a Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, a 4B11T. The Ralliart is a lower power output level version of the Lancer Evolution, which is the same engine with a bigger turbo and more boost. The buyer of our good engine was fairly unsure that we'd want his core back but YES, finally I have the chance to get one on the channel and wow was this one hurt. In this video we tear it down to see what happened, and what can be saved.
Why am I doing this? My name is Eric and I own and run a full service auto salvage business called Importapart. Part of our model includes dismantling blown and bad engines to salvage the good parts to resell. We do not rebuild engines, merely supply parts to those who do.

She only drove it twice a week. Church on Sundays, and Tuesday night bingo. Never revved it over 2000 rpm.
Looks more like the engine went out about 1/4 mile after the lights went green 😂

I agree. This was obviously a low rpm failure that no one could have predicted. I suspect metal fatigue. 🥸👍👀✅❗️

Anyone else else immediately see the wrist pin as soon as he dropped the pan and think damn, that’s ready to go back on the shelf in inventory
I remember that episode where a wrist pin was destroyed.
As soon as he pulled the remnants of the piston from cyl. 3, I thought "well, the wrist pin is probably fine. It may have been flung out the side of the block along with the rod, but wherever it is, it's fine"
What are those things made out of? Unobtainium-titanium alloy?
There's no point putting them on the shelf. Nobody ever needs to replace one. If aliens turn up a million years from now, they'll wonder what this planet of only wrist pins was.

Those golf ball dimples(pock marks) arent from debris, thats from pinging(knock). That chunk missing from Cyl 2 piston wasnt a debris, thats was a hellatious pinging event that did massive damage, either boost controller failed and sent ALL the boost or fuel pressure dropped at full send and the engine went badly lean. Either way can kill and engine before you can pull the foot away. Previous owner got ALL the enjoyment from that one.

I think you are spot on with the went lean comment, Had one of those engines in a 2010 Genny coupe, We had done a lot of work on the bottom end and also changed cams out , larger injectors / turbo way to much power for the size of the engine. Had interlocks all over to try and prevent the engine from coming apart (AFR monitoring / fuel rail pressure monitoring etc.) all the interlocks that you could put on one to try to save it in an over boost or fuel pressure loss scenario. Fuel pump went kerplunk on a full send (playing around on an 1/4 mile weekend of racing) and even the computer could not stop it in time (spark kill) detonation sent a piston into the pan. bought a kit to stuff an ls into that little coupe and to be honest I had more fun with the little turbo 4 (Weight front to rear was great before stuffing the v8 in it)

With the amount of lower end damage I was half expecting the engine to just come apart when the timing cover was removed.
When he pulled the head, I thought the block would fall in two pieces to the left and right with the crank holding them together!
Regarding the van - I do hope the handicap modification equipment is recoverable. They're extremely valuable to those who need it, regardless of cost.
The RR engine had its pan cut in half by the mechanics, not by the blow, this is #1 so far in terms of block carnage I think.
As a Mitsi owner driver for 51 years, I loved this teardown. I really enjoyed the simplicity of design and ease of disassembly compared to so many US designed engines. Keep up the good work. Lots of respect from Australia.

Oh, man! I had a 2014 Evo X MR ... that thing was a rocket on rails!!
It was not an uncommon thing for people to blow those engines, not from lack of maintenance, but from over-boosting w/o beefing up the rest of the engine, then running at WOT for extended periods. It's disconcerting hearing one of those screaming along, then hear half-second of SCREEE--BANG!
That ending gave me quite the chuckle!! Was not expecting that!
To bend a crank lobe like that is insane!
No when it gets insane is when you break a forged 5150 billet steel crankshaft. I saw a guy break one of those in a highly modified Big Cam Cummins engine. It spit the entire #3 rod journal out of the side of the block along with most of the connecting rod and cylinder sleeve. The #3 piston was wedged in the hole the rod created in the block.

I have an '03 Lancer with 175,000+ miles on it. I'm thankful it's not an Evo cause knowing how the previous owner treated it (anything besides an oil change and maybe a tune up was not happening), I seriously doubt it would be on the road now.😮
I love your channel, and I'm always excited to see what (hopeful) carnage awaits me every Saturday night.

@@I_Do_Carsonce you read the book “the toyota way” and you learn their philosophy, youll understand that wouldn’t make that decision if A) they werent forced to by emissions laws and B) wouldn’t release an engine that they weren’t 100 percent behind.
When I rebuilt my 3.5 V6 in my 2009 Impala I lost the surclips for the pistons. Bought some retaining rings from the hardware store and bent them to the right size. Over 10k miles still runs perfectly 👌
If I'm right, you are talking about the clips that holds the rocker arm to the piston skirt....and you pulled off a homemade job; you are good or lucky. I think it holds some sort of a pin in the hole of the skirt.
We use CIRCLIPS here, much better.

I would just LOVE to hear the story/recollection of this inspection port installing situation.
So, the fact there was no sludge, or varnish, makes me think the owner truly maintained his car... except the cooling system ;-)

Looks like the sludge never got time to settle.
What happened to the cooling system? Just the wrong coolant or incorrectly mixed? Using OEM pre-mixed coolant definitely makes things easier, as navigating aftermarket coolants is a minefield. Coolant colour bares no relation to chemistry, which is helpful lol.
Definitely looks like one of my engines. Meticulously serviced, always warmed up before WOT, doted on, washed and dried, but always suffering under just a measly quarter pound too much boost until its over.
Good thing that the engine is fully dressed around you know, windows.
Eric you should go back and check the top of cylinder #2 for ring ridge, if the engine was running without the top compression ring it should show up in the ring ridge.
Lancers have been a long standing popular car in Australia dating back to the late 70s. Both my kids have had one. I still have. They have lasted pretty well, but the Evo was made for rallying and very successfully for a while, but it has to have been one of the most hot rodded cars ever. They get absolutely flogged. We don't see the other brands using similar engines so much, but Mitsubishi has a pretty good reputation here. I've had 3 mid size Magna (about Sonata size)sedans all good cars none of them from new and no complaints.
No complaints about my 380😅.
I once read a book called. "You Can't Get Here From There", It was about the very first 2 Mitsubishi cars to come to Australia about 1966, I get that date from where I was when news of a Plane Crash near Winton Australia in which one of the occupants of the cars was supposed to be, only they missed the flight because of some bush bashing they were involved in that could not be replicated in our more modern 4x4s. Because of their lightness they crossed a mostly dry river that nothing else would be able to be carried by 4 men. Those 2 cars arrived in Sydney and didn't even get across the Harbour Bridge before the drivers seat colapsed and yet they went on to do marvelous things , to North Queensland then over the inland to Adelaide South Australia. Wow well worth a read if that book can be found today.
As a Costa Rican, my father used to say that most people prefer them to toyotas,as sure,the toyotas are reliable,but Mitsubishi's had a certain "sturdiness" in all environments, and held off better overall

The early stuff we got as Dodges, the rear drive Lancer and some models Galant as Colt or Challenger, and Plymouth Sapporo and a Sigma as an Arrow or Colt wagon, Arrow and D50 pickups (Mighty Max). When they went to the Belt Drive cams, as well as selling as Mitsubishis, a bit of the reliability seemed to go away. While not known to just blow up, they would start to have seal issues at 60,000 miles (100,000 km) or so, especially the front drive cars in the '90s. Some of the other issues were assembly plant based issues, Made in the USA in plants run with Chrysler Corp. who were never the top of QC. most of the other issues I saw came down to bad maintenance/neglect
Anyway, I love the old ones, and was sorely tempted to buy a '75 or '76 Colt (Lancer with a 1.6/4speed manual) with only 75,000 miles (120,000 km) on it for $4495 that was listed out of Indiana a few weeks back. It looked Cherry for the miles let alone the years. I've had 3 Colts (non-balance motor 2.0 GT, and 2 '76 models with 1.6l and one of those had a 2.6 from a Galant/Sapporo swapped in) and a Dodge D50 pickup that had the 2.0 swapped to a 2.6.
The Arrow was the worst car I ever owned. Dead cylinder at 77k

Funny, but back 1988 in high school my good friend bought a 1972 FJ 40 Landcruiser and it developed a misfire. He drove it all year and during the summer, I did a compression test on the 2F engine and #1 cylinder was dead. Pulled the cylinder head and the crown of the piston was stuck on top dead center of the block and the rod and the pressed in wrist pin were moving about freely in the bore of the cylinder. The wrist pin wore a groove in the block 5mm deep in the block. 😂 got a love the gutless indestructible Toyota 2F engine

Waterpumps with a lot of impeller pitting can be a sign of cavitation due to high-RPM operation, particularly with a higher percentage of water in the system than normal. I suspect that pump was an aftermarket part.
Also, coolant chemistry is off. Change your coolant on time.
@@MrApplesaucestuff I googled it and apparently Mitsubishis use blue OEM coolant, though coolant colour doesn't mean a lot with the various aftermarket coolants (as long as it's silicate and borate free as Japanese cars tend to require due to their seal formulation). Hmm, apparently the phosphate-free formulation of universal blue coolants (European car suitable) doesn't offer the protection (against aluminium corrosion) of the phosphates used in Japanese coolants. [I.e., the universal blue long-life OAT coolants are phosphate-free AND silicate and borate free to try to please everybody.] Maybe I should use OE coolant instead of universal blue coolant? 🤔
I owned a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer ES. It had a fuel injected 4g94 2.0 liter 140hp. Did the maintenance, and it had 241,000 miles before my youngest had an accident with it. Didn't burn oil, but it was starting to show it's age.
That motor was knocking from an improper tune, it was gonna go soon anyway because the clearances on these motors aren't OK for too much more than stock boost, but the issue here was knocking. I've seen this exact thing before. These engines in design are really tough and if people took the time to swap forged pistons and do the bearing clearances right, they're up there with k series as far as strength goes.
I really like this channel - a great combination of knowledge, analysis and humor. A great way to spend a little time in the evening after a challenging day.

Brilliant breakdown - some serious energy unleashed when that one popped. I once had a catastrophic failure of a (of all things) a year 2000 Volvo V40 T4 wagon (4 cylinder, 2 litre turbo, 200 bhp) which I’d had from new with about 120,000 miles on it. At around x8 mph, I had very little warning - a brief flash of the oil pressure light (ironically only topped up a few days prior), a microsecond later there was about 1 second of horrendous grinding noise followed by a very loud bang as a rod made a partially successful bid for freedom and as it introduced itself to the radiator and intercooler. End of Volvo. Reason was a disconnected oil cooling pipe which flushed out the old oil in record time. Everywhere. Great ending. Mrs Eric is a star !
In the 90's i had a 1986 Mitsubishi Mirage Turbo. It was my second car and was hard to find replacement parts for. I was hard on the transmission in particular. Well, luckily Hyundai Transmissions fit right in and allowed me to keep sending it. I went through at least 3 transitions on that thing. Fun fact, i had a HKS cat back exhaust on it! Not the best car, but it was fun at the time.
What were the 3 transitions? Male female...female male

I installed headers on my 11 Camaro SS. With your trials and travails lurking in my memory, I approached the dipstick with the ferocity/menacing look of a '90s WWF star. Giving the stick a few tentative turns, I jerked on it with all my might... and ended up on the floor with it in my hands. It's all your fault. Cool vid, as always.

There used to be a good writeup on a Korean blog showing the difference between the 4b11T and the Theta II from a genesis coupe. Looks like the blog was taken down in the last few years. But it showed how similar and how different they were.
Key points:
The theta is an open deck, 4b11t is a semi closed deck
The theta has an extra hole for the water pump
The 4b11t has 4 bolt mains, Theta only has 2 bolt mains
Of course the pistons and rods are different, 4b11t has a lot stronger internals.
From they way it was explained to me Mitsubishi rejected the design and Hyundai/Kia bought it. Then Mitsubishi reinforced the weak areas. Sure Hyundai/Kia still have the crankshaft defect that they blame everything on but I'm sure there's more to that than we know.
I have a 2012 Sonata 2.0T with 256k miles on it (it's been tuned well over 200k miles and still kicking). With these cars you don't push them when something is wrong. I'm guessing this was a tuning mishap, possibly fuel related. Cylinder 3 likes to go in the Theta II as well, the first thought was that it was the exhaust manifold design of #3 being the shortest runner. Though many belive it's just a design flaw of the block. Those HKS plugs are heat range 8 (I run M45's which are heat range 9), those plugs are tough as hell. They can take a lot of detonation and will still be fine.

The last Evo X was a 2015, so the timing guides were replaced sometime. It is my understanding that the 2008 and early 2009 4B11T came with a timing chain that did not last. Later versions did last.
The engine may have been an OEM replacement. That could be another reason for the 2017 markings on the timing guides. If you are really lucky, that head has the sodium filled exhaust valves also seen on the 2015 Evo X Final Edition. The sodium valves and some reprogramming gave it 313 horsepower instead of 295. That makes the core more valuable.
It's another situation where someone changes oil on schedule, but doesn't do anything else for maintenance. Does anyone else get motivated to change their antifreeze when watching these videos?

Those marks on the pistons are a clear sign of engine knocking badly, most probably by a bad tune. Sustained knocking usually lead to bent or broken rods or cracked pistons.

Ran across one of your vids as a YT Recommen while watching Speedkar99, and have been binging like crazy.
Pretty far from a prude, but honestly one of the best YT'ers in about every category one could mention.
No click-baiting, no crazy music, or begging to 'smash that like' is big plus.
Lots of technical detail, occasional tangential takes that are either fun or informative.
Doesn't feel the need to drop the f-bomb, etc every other sentence, which is probably nice for Dad's to watch with their kids.
Catches the innuendo discreetly, and honestly is pretty funny without going over the top and painfully forcing it.
My wish list for future video would also be a few more of the 3-cylinder motors that seem to be becoming more common.
Crazy how different engines seem to be now compared to 80's 302/350's.
This should be required viewing for students from my Mechanical Engineering Strength of Materials course (decades ago...).

I've never a two piece bedplate before.lol. The A853 engine in my Neon SRT-4 is cast iron and is a split crankcase design with a bedplate like in this one. But those never rip themselves in half because aluminum, no matter how light it is, will never ever out perform steel! 🎉

The global Chrysler version of these engines is outstanding. 200K miles on my last one and drove it like I stole it every single day and then donated it to a family member who totalled it a couple of weeks later.
I'm approaching 370K.
