- 1 year old baby Orangutan Jarang persists and scrambles up his mother
to get a feed. He has had a difficult start to life and has mobility issues
but he is really trying his best to overcome his mobility issues.
Update from Augist 2024
Baby Jarang is soon to be undergoing a medical operation for his bi-lateral scrotal hernia.
From what I have observed it is possible that one side has been operated on, but this
has not been confirmed by the Zoo.
The Zoo is hoping this will help his mobility and they have been waiting for him to get strong enough for the procedure.
Orangutan Jingga, is a UA-cam sensation, she rose to fame after a video of her reacting to a magic trick went viral on UA-cam. - Monkey Sees A Magic Trick
On the 14th June 2023 she gave birth to a critically endangered Bornean baby orangutan, her first baby, a boy, was fathered by Kawan, who has recently moved to Blackpool Zoo in 2022 from Apenheul Zoo in the Netherlands, after the previous male, Ramon, did not produce any offspring with the female group at Blackpool Zoo

Why doesn't it seem like mama wants to feed her baby?
Does she still carry him on her foot? Why doesn’t the zoo give an update on his condition? What happens if his mobility doesn’t improve before he’s too big for his mom to carry? Thanks.
They don't give updates because people are asking why they don't intervene and help him. They occasionally throw out lies claiming they have to wait for this or that. Looks to me like they're hoping he doesn't make it.

@@SHAWNEESKYWALKER 😳he’s over a year old. If they didn’t want him to make it this far he wouldn’t have. They likely supplemented his feedings as a newborn, they could have chosen not to. Why would the zoo lie to the public about his care and condition? No benefit for them to do so. Were you able to read the statement they released a little while back? It had some good and promising information.
Maybe I’m the only one who tries to see the positivities. As a young, first time mom Jingga could have flat out rejected him. She didn’t, she figured out what would work for a baby with no grasping strength. I agree we don’t see her feed as much as what seems to be the norm, but we don’t know how effective his suckling was, did he actually latch and ingest milk or just try to and be unsuccessful. Maybe he got used to bottle feeding and she got used to letting him. We just don’t know. I’ve always been a Pollyanna, “a person characterized by irrepressible optimism and a tendency to find good in everything” and I could just be doing that with Jingga and Jarang. I just prefer to consider the options with positivity.
This video kinda breaks my heart as baby Jarang tries so hard to move up to mom's teat, then may get a couple drinks before she pulls him off. She's never acted real maternal toward him as shown in previous videos. Poor little guy! Wonder if keepers should give him a supplemental bottle like they do in other zoos?
I’m sure he is well feed, either Jingga when we don’t see it or supplements. Considering everything, Jingga being a new mom with a very needy, disabled baby, she’s done quite well.
Babies are needy. And It’s really too early to label him disabled. He’s shaky, but his strength will come with time. I concur, she has always laid on her chest/ pushed him away. I love every Orang, but don’t give her too much credit…

I think his development has been impacted by Jingga’s poor mothering skills…he is so determined and he seems to know what he needs to do…it’s not just how she carried him…she doesn’t help him learn anything…seems oblivious and stuck …she doesn’t seem to be adapting as he changes. It’s all up to him. Sadly.
I agree with you. The mom doesn't seem to be the nurturing type. The baby is struggling to get some milk...I hope the zookeeper is taking notes of the mother's behavior.
They are supposed to take and hand rear him. I reported this zoo to Allison and Jeremy so maybe he'll get the Help instead of this zoo getting money for the video's and Not taking proper care of this Baby orangutan. Everyone Have A Safe and Blessed Day. Praying for The Baby Orangutan

Thank you so much for all of your videos but especially the ones on these two! I've been glued to following them since the first one of Jingga trying to care for him. I'm so invested now and I don't even live in the same country!
This poor little guy. My reactions each video keep swinging between "YEAH THERE HE GOES!!! SO MUCH BETTER" and "oh no Jingga 😭." This one was more of the latter.
I know everybody hates the armchair zookeeping and I know the experts are watching them closely and have stated that Jingga is doing well but man... it just still seems off with her. I wasn't as worried when she pulled him off of her because I think you've said that she feeds him out of sight a lot and he's obviously getting fed but at the end she wasn't just pulling him off, she was holding him down away so he couldn't even try again 😞 she's doing her best and she clearly loves him but I can't help but think that he would be in a much better way if Summer was his mother instead. Loving something and providing proper loving care are unfortunately not always interchangeable.
He really is doing so much better though! Especially the video where he was pulling himself up on the fence... go little man!
I totally agree, I'm the same some days I am filled with hope when he has a good day and then other visits are a bit deflating. Hopefully I will be able to document his life through to adulthood. 🥰

I sure would like to know what else is wrong with him, I understand they’re waiting for him to get stronger so he can have surgery on the groin, but that is not the reason why he is developmentally slow. Poor kid works so hard to get up to the milkbar and she hardly lets him suckle at all before she’s pulling him off. Poor little guy.
The zoo does not have the babies best interest at heart.
I agree. I don't see what the zoo provides him like bars or ropes for him to practice holding on to or cclimbing on while the mom is away from him. He just lay down and do nothing except interact with hay straw. No ropes or bars nearby at his level so he can learn to grip and climb as he gets older. Hope the zoo keepers give him the milk supplements every day that the Mom put limitations on nursing him.
Exactly. Obviously important to be with mom. However she is one move away from shattering his legs being carried by foot. He is constantly pulled away when he is nursing. Not sure why they don't intervene.

He continues to improve! Looking forward to when he is stronger and he can have that operation. As he gains strength, grip and coordination it will become easier for the both of them. I personally believe Jingga has been a really good mother for her disabled baby. Some would have abandoned him and some - especially younger mothers would have tired by now and given up. I think he may have cerebral palsy, but who knows? He is improving and that is the main thing. Thank you for the updates! 💚🙏🏻

Absolutely love Jarang and Jingga!❤❤ I also respect other people's opinions but I was wondering if maybe Jingga has problems nursing him. Like maybe it causes her a lot of pain, maybe she isn't producing enough or like humans some mothers aren't really into it. I mean I've also seen it in domesticated animals. Like others, I also wonder if the zoo supplements milk for him. And yes it would be great if the zoo would give updates on these two. Love the video, thank you.
I just wanted to add that I had missed a part of the video & noticed when I rewashed it & at the end when she pulled him off & kept him at a distance was sad,😢 but I'm wondering if he is biting her nipple a little too hard & she did that to discipline him & teach him he can't do that when he's eating.❤❤

@Starkiller1981 I can't argue with that but I was just saying maybe there was some kind of issue, like some humans have where they want to nurse their babies but can't or only can nurse a little bit.

It's so sad how she just pushes him away whenever he wants to feed. He goes to her like he is starving and she never seems to want to feed him or even hold him. 😢
He's doing what he can with the little support that he has. Mom doesn't let him feed enough. Poor angel is struggling. Anyone can see it, why not the zookeepers.
If the zoo wasn’t well aware of the situation and dealing with it appropriately, Jarang would not have survived. How many births and feeding has Jingga seen? The Zoo and keepers have a lot going on and likely don’t have the time to respond to posts about one baby. We are blessed to have Ape Tracker filming and doing what he can to keep the interested informed. The zoo put out a message explaining what had been happening and is to transpire at the proper time. I see he has yet to have the surgery, which should help him get stronger.
@@PamPreston78 I’ve had communications with the Zoo via e-mail. You’re saying “one baby” as if he’s “just one baby”. Jingga is a first time mom. In other zoos, zookeepers keep very strict and vigilant with their primates. If they see that the mother is not giving enough nurture to the baby, they extract it from the closure and take very good care of it. Do you know that orangutangs are on the berge of extintion? Do you know how important is Jarang’s life and well being? Of course not. You just wrote this comment because you needed to disagree with anyone today and I won’t take it seriously, because you’re making no sense.
Fortunately the team at Blackpool Zoo give him a huge amount of support. 🥰
I am hopeful for Jarang.. It looks like one side of the groin has been operated on and I suspect that’s why he is able to move around more. I also suspect that the zoo staff are supplementing him with additional nutrition. On a different note, how long has Jarang had teeth because this is the first time I saw any.

Supplemental feeding by the zoo staff may be the answer? The US zoos tend to step in when it's evident that the baby is failing to thrive... not saying one way is better than the other, but perhaps it's time to get "all hands on deck" so to speak.

To everyone saying she pulled him of the teat he neEded to suckle more the video is edited without seeing it all unedited there no way to know whether she did or didnt allow him to est more. In my opinion yes she pulled him off the teat but she appears to positioning her cradling in her arm so id ssy he prolly kept eating.

I agree she probably removes him from feeding because he most likely bites down too hard and it’s painful, not his fault just part of his disability poor little guy
Hand rearing can also go bad. Look at what a naughty spoloed baby Ceria raised by Julie at Tama zoo is. We dont know everything going on but from the crazy carrying alone i would think hand rearing wojld be appropriate.

Its Not going to be funny when that other Mom takes him from her. I watched a video From another zoo and it happened and the female Orangutan that took the Baby. Beat the other mom up Nd she's still has the Baby. She treats it like her own Baby this Mom stop's Him from drinking Wait until something happens thrn the zoo is going to be in trouble. Jarang is starting to move so much better he's a lot stronger. His legs strength is improving.

Jarang has obviously had physical and mental developmental issues since birth. He would not have survived in the wild. Mom and the keepers have brought him this far. I imagine the zoo and keepers want the two of them to flourish even more than we do. They live with it day in and day out and we don’t know how much hands on is done behind the scenes. Every Orangutan is a gift and responsibility to help the species survive and Blackpool is well aware of that. We are occasional drop in viewers who aren’t even contributing to their care. Maybe fewer of the disparaging toward the staff or Jarang and enjoy what little shared with us as he progresses would be nice.

Plus it will take him a long time to reach the capabilities his peers did as infants and toddlers, if he ever does, but he has a loving mother, Summer’s baby and zoo personnel who will encourage and help him. His demeanor is so sweet he will be hard to say no to. And thank goodness he won’t have to learn the skills to live in the wild. I do not know you or what you forfeit to bring these lovely videos to us, but I am sure I am not the only one who is truly grateful. God bless and keep you.

I agree! Or at least a little help from zoo staff. I worry about him getting enough nutrition since it's so hard for him to move up to nurse, then mom just pulls him off when he finally gets on to feed.

It's so sad when he finally gets to nurse after such a battle to get into position, and she doesn't let him suckle for too long, and you can tell he is still hungry. Are the zookeeper supplementing by giving him bottles? He is so determined. His mother doesn't seem to want to nurse him. 😢
If I had to speculate, I would imagine his mobility issues also cause him to bite harder when suckling, causing her discomfort. Obviously not his fault at all but Jingga is young and had bad experiences with her own mother. I do think it's hard to tell from these videos alone how well fed he is - it's entirely possible he gets enough just via intermittently drinking across the day, or the keepers give him milk in the back areas outside of view. I agree it can be very worrying, but I believe that he's getting enough nutrition, since he's lived over a year now and the hardest parts are the very youngest year

I think Jarang would have benefited being hand raised. If Jinga doesn't have the mothering skills. She hasn't got better over time her interest in him is still limited. He's doing l well without the love and stimulation from his mother. He's mostly disregarded and laying on his own. He has made it to where he is today on his own. He's a wee star.
@@L.M.369 Jingga's mother broke her arm by accident. She had to be hand raised while healing, and when reintroduced she was sadly very afraid of her mother

Thank you Apetracker. You've been there from the beginning of his life. I don't know you personally but believe your a great person. As hard as it was for you at times, watching his struggles, not knowing if he would make it, if he would be there the next time you made the trip to see him, you didn't give up. That takes compassion and grit because I know you fell in love with him. Through you a lot of other people fell in love with him too. Thanks for sticking it out when it was the hardest. Much respect❤
Thanks for the great comment Louise, you are quite correct, last year I was really saddened by one of my visits and just didn't want to go back but seeing him from birth I had to go back though some days are better than others, it's a bit of a rollercoaster with him some days I feel he has made really great progress and others he seems to have made a step back. I got really lucky on my last visit and got to spend some time with him close up to the glass! So some really nice videos to come. 🥰
Look at his foot grip…strong on the side that appears yo still have a hernia….hmmmm…more and more, I believe less of the zoo’s statement. Love Iingga and Jarang so much.

It's torment watching her reject him. That wasn't a big feed at all. She can't stand it when he suckles. She's possibly the worst orang mother I've ever seen. She can't help it, but my god, it's why the little guy is still so weak. He's not getting fed much or carried right. We keep hearing this is going to change but I sure don't see it. Most zoos would've hand reared him by now,
Does Ape Tracker know when he might be judged strong enough to have this operation please ?

Mom pushes him away when he gets a little milk. He needs to be fed by the workers bc he looks too small and is very weak. Evil mom :(
I don’t think she’s evil…she loves him to bits…but honestly not much else…I don’t think she knows what to do with him… She was separated from her mom as a baby and missed out…
I don’t think the zoo did any pre-natal training with her…I’m pretty mad about that.
Jingga and Jarang are both lovely, sweet-natured animals. Truly.
