@0:48 "Man. That is looking ugly...." He's literally looking at the wall of death. You can hear the tornado roar the entire video and see the power flashes. He was looking right at the rain wrapped EF5 tornado.
Power flashes at the 0:55 mark are a dead giveaway that this is indeed the twister itself, at least for meteorologists and weather enthusiasts... but to the average eye, it's no wonder many didn't recognize an EF5 was barreling straight towards them until it was basically right on top of them. Such a horrible tragedy.
Yeah this was taken ENE of the KSN station. I noticed this given a power flash visible on the SW portion of the tornado, so i checked the KSN tower cam, got that exact power flash and determined the path. Impressive sleuthing from me! This also means they were in QUITE the close call...
It didn't help there was a warning earlier in the day and nothing happened. (Not blaming NWS they did the right thing) But I feel it can desensitize people when in real danger. It was an unfortunate situation that unfolded.
@@Samowarrior I think one of the worst things was the fact that the tornado intensified so rapidly and abruptly. It's not uncommon for tornadoes of EF4 and EF5 intensity to intensify and grow dramatically in very short periods of time, but this thing was literally rope to wedge in seconds. Oh, and we cannot forget the extreme rain-wrapping either! For example, a similarly rain-wrapped tornado in Phil-Campbell Hackleburg AT LEAST had a highly visible wall cloud with dramatic rotation and it was so damn loud even from far away. Once the roar of this tornado got loud? All you can do is hope you're not in it's direct path cause it's about to strike. Awful event.
That classic dark green, dark grey, dark blue combination in both the clouds and the ground just makes this so much more terrifying and claustrophobic. It is hella common every time you get a severe thunderstorm in a usual Spring/May day. Great find, and I follow your Twitter!
UPDATE: 2:03 being a power flash on the SW side of the tornado correlates to a power flash in the KSN tower cam footage from their perspective on the SE side of the tornado. This leaves me to conclude still that this is facing NE from a neighbourhood north of the path and close to KSNF. Would love someone to properly geolocate this!
I believe it was taken at the Carolina West apartment complex. You can clearly see two separate towers, one in each camera angle. The first tower is farther away and likely the news station tower. The second is much closer, and is only a few hundred yards south of the Carolina West apartments. If you look closely it appears that the second angle tower is tall enough that the top of it is out of frame.
Finding Joplin videos seems to be the hardest. Never seen this one. Whats amazing is how it was black like nighttime in all of the videos Ive seen close to it
1:55 for those who will come shouting you can't see it. Looks to be the left edge of the tornado here around hard left of vid, and this video was taken at a neighbourhood close to the KSNF building. If facing somewhere NEish then that's likely the backside of it. Not our fault the storm was this rain wrapped, so please do not come with a "Terrible video, you can't see it!" It's in there and @TornadoArchive here saturated and mixed a frame up of this video. A large wedge is visible so we can confirm it is in the video, just QUITE hard to see
@kennethloki7011 I'm not arguing but this is more of a precautionary point. I've seen people complain in this guy's videos before so i just wanna point out quick that there actually is a tornado in the video and this ain't some crap rain wrapped mess. I did research and discussed the video with him lol as the desc reads lmao
I’m on mobile and when I scrubbed the video with my finger, I clearly saw the tornado traveling across the screen. Just a tip for anyone struggling to see.
@ThickStump Yeah, if you can't see it at the timestamp i mentioned. Just use your finger and zoom in. 2:03 is a power flash that will further show it. This was completely hidden from this vantage point...
I think this might’ve been taken very near the Carolina West Apartment complex and the Fairview cemetery. The person recording would be north of the track looking southwest towards the news station tower which you can see in the first angle. Then moved to a window looking southeast facing the much closer tower just south of the Carolina West apartments. Check it out on Google maps.
Dear Midwest, the deep south loves and adores you greatly. You dont have to share everything. We will keep hurricanes and you keep tornados. We have hurricanators and we dont like at all. Much love from the deep south.
01:33, which is when the roar of the twister becomes very loud, is another thing that likely caught a lot of people off guard. The rain not only hid the tornado, but it also hid the roar and the sound of all sorts of crap getting destroyed. Once you heard the roar, you'd better hope you were not in its path because, at that point, it was too damn close. 2011 was an insane year. Not only did you have 6 EF5 tornadoes in one year, but VERY high-end EF5s at that, including this one. It cannot be understated just how bad the damage to St. John's and the surrounding contextual damage was. This thing threw a heavy-duty medevac and crumbled it like a toy. Not to mention, the amount of pavement scouring and granulation this thing left behind was horrific. Tim Marshall (yes, the same person people criticize for being too conservative with ratings) found an additional 22 homes that were properly built and anchored and were all swept clean, assigning them EF5 ratings as a result. This was a historically violent tornado, even by F5/EF5 metrics.
This is a new video for me. It’s really good at tracking the movement of the tornado just outside of the damage zone. The sky changes color constantly.
I was in Joplin on this day. Thankfully my two youngest children and I were on the Northeast side of town. Such a horrible and devastating tragedy. My oldest son was in West Joplin near Blackcat Road where the tornado was forming in the field to the West of the house he was at. He saw it forming. There wasn't too much damage in that area...named Cedar Ridge...but in no time it increased with unimaginable intensity. I was thankful that he was ok. Blessings to the families 🙏 that lost loved ones. It came so suddenly that there wasn't enough time to send out an early warning.
For those who cant see it pause at 1:31 and slowly scrub forward by dragging the video slider with your finger. Youll see a dark mass moving right to left across the screen which is the tornado
crazy to think we have more joplin tornado footage. I'm creating a playlist dedicated to the joplin tornado, which consists of actual footage of the tornado itself since there isn't a lot of actual rare footage of it.
I think this was taken east of S Willard Ave. at W 12th street in Joplin. That puts this video just over 3/4 mile ENE of KSN and the same distance north of the path of the tornado.
If you scrub the video from 1:33 to 3:00 you can clearly see the dark shadow moving right to left until it exits the left side of the screen. Eerie asF!
😢😮 Friend, you take a dangerous chance by filming that thing. I would have been in my basement already and listening to the radio in a safe place. Boy that can wipe a house right off the foundation like nothing. Thank you.
Thank you tornado archive for responding back to me what I thought about the video what I was doing with the EF5 tornado thank you. I live in the Northeast. We don't get too many up here. It's very rare. We got a lot in the last maybe 2 or 3 years cuz of the weather and everything. Take care. Good luck to you. Hope you never see something like that ever again anytime soon. Thank you and God bless and happy New Year to you.
@RagingMoon1987 Looks to me there's a possibile enso cycle for the Midwest, Great Lake Region, and Ohio Valley. We had one in 2011. The violent weather in the south, crazy blizzards, earth quakes, and tsunami's. I was researching it, by all means the areas I mentioned, could be affected with similar outbreaks this late winter and spring. I could be wrong I'm not a meteorologist.
@@thebolter89 the ENSO cycle is like perfectly timed. I'm not too well favored on the general pattern that leads to the conclusions of a active tornado season, but things do seem to be timed in the right time period for this. I wouldn't draw comparisons to years, but Reed's obviously seeing stuff in the ENSO data that looks enough concern for a active tornado season. I would just take his words as looking like a active tornado season but wouldn't listen to the comparisons. ALL we can do is just use previous analogs as we get closer but i agree. That ENSO looks concerning
How many of you locals are still finding personal items and paper money from that day of destruction? I think it would be cool for kids to go on treasure hunts to help find important documents, pictures and other miscellaneous stuff. I guess victims put ads on social media or in the newspaper describing what they lost and hopefully getting some of it back.
Wow, what a find! I haven't seen this one yet and I scour UA-cam for lost clips. I can't get over how sinister the tornado was. I’m a trained spotter and hobby chaser. It kills me how many people buy into that Old Wives Tale about tornadoes sounding like freight trains. They absolutely do not! They sound like what they are; huge wind tunnels, and the big ones roar. You can hear both very plainly in this video.

This makes me wonder how many rare tornado videos are on UA-cam simply titled “Tornado”
definitely lol! idek how this one popped up but there’s probably so much more
There's a few. I stumbled across a very rare Cullman video titled something tornado but it was somewhat Spanish.
I think it gets put rare if a well known tornado and it’s never been posted before like still get some new Moore 99 every few years or so

Literally from night to day
I like that it has the memorable moment the local news station goes off air, they had just been showing the storm ravage joplin from the tower cam..
I wonder if these people who are recording the video realize that they are recording the most historic tornado since May 3rd.1999.
