Thanks a lot for sharing your great story ! i survived a tornado too ! i survived the 12-10-2021 Mayfield Kentucky EF4+ tornado working at the candle factory that night !
Thank you for sharing the memories. Xenia 1974 is a historically well known tornado and this is the first actual personal experience of the event I have heard. These shared experiences help people to know what a tornado is like. I've been through 2 and it is frightening. Also seeing the damage 'for real' is different from looking at photos.
Such an incredible story. I’m a trained spotter and hobby chaser. None of the meteorologists today were available to people then. Spotting was about all there was. I love her description of the sound. She’s right; not a freight train sound. It sounds like what it is; a giant wind tunnel and the big ones roar.
Thank God you and your father survived because that was one of 148 tornadoes that ravaged 13 states that day , I was 15 and living in Toledo and everybody thought one was gonna hit Toledo for sure but Toledo narrowly dodged the bullet , The tornado that hit Xenia Ohio was the worst of the 148 tornadoes that ravaged 13 states April 3rd 1974 , 6 of them were F-5s and if the Fujita scale had gone higher It would have been rated an F-6 because of the massive amount of damage it did , My best friend Mike went down to Xenia to check on a couple of relatives living down there and thank God they were ok In the area of Xenia where he was at All that was left standing were the fire hydrants
When she speaks about the police issuing the back to back tornado warnings, she's not lying. Part of what was so brutal and violent about the '74 outbrak was that many of the areas hit were hit back-to-back. When a tornado would hit one place, another would follow right behind it. The fact she mentioned a tornado forming with a clear blue sky background shows you how quick and suddenly those storms were forming in that outbreak. I'm really glad she shared this story, and thank you to this channel for documenting it. This is definitely a piece of American history that needs to be preserved. 👏🏿 👏🏿 👏🏿
There are photos of the Xenia tornado but it's in black and white photo. What a horrible scary experience she had. I heard during the outbreak of 74 Xenia was hit the hardest and had the deadliest one. Thank God she made. And those who lost their lives I pray for the victims families. And there were 2 tornadoes in Xenia????
I think i remember reading that this was the first tornado with video and audio. But, someone filmed the video but no audio, and someone else recorded audio but no video. They put the 2 together, and it was the first. Sorry if I'm wrong, but it's been a long time. I lived in Southern Michigan at the time. 74 outbreak was terrible. I also had a picture in a book about Xenia that had a live chicken plucked clean. Not one feather on it. Multiple vortex.
Lived about 15 to 20 miles directly east of Xenia on 35 just 3 miles outside of Jamestown, remember one of my older brothers saying it was coming our way fortunately it never happened. Remember the day after seeing the damage it was like seeing a bomb go off, and I do remember where the Kroger grocery store once stood.
I was 9 yrs old living in Dayton...playing outside when my mom yelled at us to GET INSIDE THE HOUSE! I saw her looking up so I did as well and saw the ugliest, scariest looking sky I have ever seen to this day. I did not see a funnel but saw a swirling mass of black cloud hanging down. Now, I know it must have been the wall cloud.
There was an F1 tornado once but I had no idea it was happening until my cousin got home and told me lol indeed I saw the evidence the next morning. And perhaps even more ironically is that I was in and lived in the basement part of the complex anyway.
You hit the sound on the point.....woman you are a real queen!!!

I can't imagine. Just seeing it out the back door was trauma enough for me.
I remember that day. Though we did not have a tornado in my town (one hit about 45 miles away), I remember that it was an erie day.
That’s a good story . That’s a day none will forget. I was living in Kettering. Off of Dorothy lane then I was around 5 yrs old
I was 12 years old and in sixth grade when we had that tornado!

Tornado and snow in the same day, that's crazy.

I'm 64 years young,.This human being is ready for "Passover" I'm a citizen of Meade County Ky
Tornadoes of this magnitude don’t sound like a freight train. They sound like sitting inside a powerful jet engine.
That explains why the thunder was so scary

WOW, what a story to tell. Thank God you all survived one of the worst tornados ever.
