Moments after the tornado in Joplin, MO, May 22, 2011

- We were in Joplin, MO on Sunday... just moments after the tornado(es) hit and did unbelievable damage. We were some of the first on the scene for around a dozen tractor trailers that had been blown over near Exit 11 on Highway 44. Several of our group are emergency responders and lent assistance to a few of the injured truckers there... including transport to the hospital for a couple of them. The devastation there was unfathomable, and my thoughts are with this devastated community...
Seeing so many overturned trucks... but no cars... The most severe damage is often hidden from sight. Very tragic.
they likely got picked up, tossed, and shredded by the updraft. the weight of the semis likely were the only thing that saved them from being ingested by the tornado.
after my grandma and uncle passed away in the tornado we left to go to the beach to take our minds off of it and. now im a cheerleader for joplin and happy as ever thanks to the people who supported everyone passed away
Kaylee Cavener I read you also Lost your Sister, from this storm as well. I'm happy you were able to find some Peace. I'm hoping to be able to visit the Memorial there next month. I'd like to paint a rock & leave it there as a Tribute for you & so many others. Please let me know if this would be ok.
Kaylee Cavener I am so sorry for your loss. This storm was awful :(. As a storm lover- this is just fucking awful!
Storm chasers that help people afterwards ... you guys are awesome!
80% of the time Storm chasers are the ones that call into report that a tornado has touched down and what direction it is heading which saves lives. If you watch a lot of Storm chaser videos on UA-cam you'll actually hear them calling to the radio stations to report The heading of the tornado to inform the public. Which is awesome.
Yes we do that to keep people safe. It does save alot of lives. Please pay attention to the weather. When their is a Tornado Watch is issue pay attention. When a tornado warning is issue take it serious don't wait, take action. Please don't chase leave it up to the professional storm chasers. Stay safe out there!!!!
I'm a independent chaser but would stop in a second to help anyone that need of medical or buried in rumble, the hardest is finding expired victims or animal's

It's amazing how many people who have the job of freight hauling, big rig drivers, the crazy amount of situations and adversities that you must be aware of. The idea of driving straight into a tornado or having a tornado come from behind you and over coming you ,your vehicle that is several tons and just toss it like its Styrofoam, without the loyalty of the freight hauling community, the idea of having anything or options of availability is not a reality.
Thank you truck drivers ,big rig travelers and produce providers.
Thank you for posting this. My brother is a truck driver. Sometimes it seems to be a thankless job. Cars (4-wheelers) cut them off like crazy all the time but when there's an accident who gets blamed?
My brother knew a driver in that company who was cut off like that and wrecked trying to avoid the car. He was trapped and the rig was on fire. Several cars passed the wreck and this driver thought he was going to burn to death. Suddenly someone comes running up, kicks in the windshield and pries him out.
Guess what? It was another trucker that stopped to help.
Even today in 2024 almost every single thing we eat, use, or need came by truck.
So yes, some respect would be good.
Today is May 22, 2021, exactly a decade since this tragedy. My heart goes out to all who lost loved ones and property and pets. May God be with you
"May God be with you" Would "god" not have been the one to create the Tornado and dictate it's path? I mean, if nothing happens counter to gods plan then this too was part of that plan right?
@@harshbarjyour compassion is overwhelming
Thank you! I'm just glad our group was there to give assistance to several of the truckers. It wasn't much, but we were so happy that we could help in some small way.
Just before I watched this, I watched the video of the Joplin Emergency Manager’s talk. He’s excellent BTW Highly rec watching it. Someone wrote in a comment that four truck drivers were killed by that tornado. Don’t know if that’s correct, but wow. Amazing and sobering video, thanks!
This is from the red truck! ua-cam.com/video/TcUkArSFiIc/v-deo.html
I wonder if you actually watched the entire video... The individuals within our group --- six of them, I believe there were, from our four vehicles --- that were trained in emergency aid were the ones that went to initially check on the truckers. The remainder of us were available, if needed, for anything that we could do to help, but as it turned out, the initial triage phase by the trained individuals ended up being more than sufficient.
Finally, a chaser that uses rain-x, check out that visibility people.
rain x sucks. checkout H2GO. harder to apply but lasts for 18 months.
@@GoogleUser-dy5gb Rain-X is good if you don't need it all the time, which most don't. Rain-x does a really good job if you're expecting stormy weather for a week or two, but yeah, if you live in Seattle or somewhere where it rains almost 24/7, find something better.
That's like the FIRST thing I noticed. This should be used in a commercial for the stuff
Ikr?! I've often wondered why most other chasers don't use it.
I’ve always wondered why someone doesn’t invent a coating or film that permanently rainproofs glass.
Oh, good lord... I wish you guys would take the time to actually read the description that accompanies the video before jumping to conclusions. Of our 20+ people in the group, several were EMTs, and they were the ones to go initially. If needed, the remainder of us were ready to assist. Fortunately, what they found was not serious or life-threatening. One individual was transported to the hospital for treatment.
I've never seen so many semi's over from one storm! You guys did the right thing by stopping and helping! If I manage to be able to go on a chase "tour" it will be with you guys!
Thanks! We just wanted to make sure the truck drivers were okay!
I just watched this 2019, heart warming.
You did what needed to be done. That tornado was unbelievable. My cousin lives in Springfield MO
they found a check in their front yard from Joplin. God bless.
Here in St. Louis this is the very first inkling of damage in Joplin - trucks blown over on I-44 but in a few minutes we began to realize the immensity of it.
poetcomic1 we had terrible weather too on this day. My family lived on the Illinois side of STL and the glass on our sliding glass door was bouncing in its frame from wind, my parents sent me and my sister to the shelter under the stairs just in case....but obviously nothing compared to the craziness that hit joplin.
A truck driver client of my husband’s was traveling through Joplin when this storm hit. His truck was flipped on the interstate and he was banged up pretty bad, including a broken arm. He said it was the scariest thing he ever experienced. I can’t imagine…
It was so dark yet it was still supposed to be the daylight hours and it was even more graphic just after the tornado hit. I mean the entire main artery of the city was destroyed. That is incredible and parts of the city that were not in the path of it still had damage.
Ty for helping the ppl and not just driving by. God BLESS you all
My thoughts exactly. Thank you for helping.
Have Some Respect people. It gets me mad that people in here are being rude by saying stupid and boring to this video.
Ks_ Tornado they have no respect Fucking people must be brain washed by Donald Trump
ntcrawford722 really. this video is from 3 years ago. people can't even put aside their political differences for these poor people that lost their lives may they rest in peace.
To those who ask why they are just sitting there and not helping, if you pay attention to the video, the guys DO get out and help! Great footage, and great of you all for helping those people!
Melissa Trent happy
My husband got home two days before tho storm back to dyess afb in tx from a deployment and we went the next day to help we have family there our businesses were gone it was crazy how much damage was done many lives were lost! Bless u for helping
So sorry you and yours went through this!!!
I can't believe that's there's people making rude comments about this
I have respect for storm chasers everywhere here in america great job for helping those truck drivers
Wow just seeing this. All those trucks flipped! Stunning. Thanks guys for helping the drivers, and even their pets! ❤❤❤
Also, I saw Jeff Piotrowski's coverage of this monster, so whomever is dissing this video, these guys and Jeff were within a hair's breadth of getting caught in the tornado. The vans and truck and Jeff and his wife Kat all escaped. These guys and Jeff, where qualified, went to help the injured and - bless those who din't make it - Jeff found several of those. Heroes? Maybe. Maybe not. Heroic actions? I'd say a resounding "Yes."
I saw Jeff’s video back then. He’s one of my favorite chasers, although lotsa folks don’t like him. He’s ALWAYS calling out for help when chaos is happening.
When this happened I was only an hour away. It made me cry to watch this on TWC 😭
I still can't believe that the day this happened we were right there and yet we played outside and got Ice cream and then it hit and everything changed!!!
Thats crazy. I live close to joplin. that night my dad pointed at a cloud and said "thats going to be a problem". little did he know it was a massive problem :(
So glad you are both here to share.
MrsJonesie lol
I know what you mean....I was in the Valley Fire on 09-12-2015...... beautiful sleeping weather in the morning ... cool and a rare cloudy morning, got up to take a shower when the only perfectly straight standing tree, 70 feet tall fell and hit the corner of my roof then broke into 3 to 4 foot sections and completely dammed the year round creek ! That REALLY WAS A RUDE AWAKENING....but, I managed to laugh it off until the Clouds above me in a tiny area of the canopy above appeared to have turned into an ominous reddish orange glow, when suddenly no wind became 60 to 80 mph inflows! By the time I ran into the cabin, power was out, telephones were dead and I couldn’t really remember where my keys, or purse or dog leash were...! From that point on I was in Emergency Response Mode trying to get my elderly neighbors and their brain damaged paraplegic son out of the danger zone, along with notifying the neighbors on each side of me and across the road.....somehow, I knew what was Not within MY POWER to control....God let me know I would have only my memories left. Just get away from danger and deal with the rest when it shows it’s face. Life hasn’t truly been a happy place since, but it is owning a property I can’t afford to rebuild upon.....and the ugliness since the immediate aftermath.....Government rules, regs and code enforcement infringement upon my right to live on my property in a brand new small trailer. My property was cared for, not abandoned and neglected ...I mowed and weeded and kept wildflowers and tended my Grandparents bulbs, and nurtured bay trees back to life, and making the effort to just BE. THE OTHER UGLINESS is how the people changed as the rebuild began...almost like a strange plague of arrogance was born and became a contagious disease....in a tiny community! So ....life is full of unwanted, unexpected changes. And the older we get, the harder changes become.
I have seen plenty of video of Joplin tornado. But never this 1. Thanks
Yeah, that was an awful day, for sure. I was really happy that the truckers we encountered were not badly injured. Clearly, many in town were not as fortunate...
Thanks, p phillips! Our group was on the road, at that time, with two standard vans and a 4-wheel drive truck... along with one recent add-on that was a truck that was fortified to deal with large hail. Given that our group (Cloud9 Tours) is a storm-chase group, though, after we helped the truckers that day, we plodded on for other chase opportunities thereafter. That's the way it works with chase groups... for better or worse.
Very thankful for all of you who put your lives on the line to help...I can imagine becoming paralyzed with the magnitude of destruction, but you all keep your head and keep on getiin it..much thanks
I lived in Joplin for 2 years but after the tornado...I didn't really understand until now what everyone went through...I hope nothing like that ever happens again, so scary!
Unfortunately for the wounded on scene. the nearest hospital was struck and knocked out of commission as well.
+MKrip808 Yes, you are correct. If I remember correctly, there were fatalities from the tornado within that hospital as well!
Thad Bowling yes there were. Several people died when the power went out, the back up generators failed and their respirators failed as well. At least one visitor died too.
Was that St. John's?
+Niklas Enblom Yes, St. John's Regional Hospital.
In general, I believe the NWS does as good of a job as they possibly can, given the limitations that they have. In the case of tornadoes, the SPC generally does an exceptional job, I think. That being said, I *do* wish that more advance warning could be given, but that's not always possible. Storms sometimes seem to have minds of their own, so horrible events such as the Joplin tornado cannot always be predicted with a high degree of reliability. As for local news media, I cannot speak for them.
The Joplin tornado was warned for a very long time. The problem was several tornado-warned storms had passed over the city that day and nothing happened, so people got complacent and the worst possible scenario happened. Also, the tornado tracked over the southern part of the city, which generally has poorer home construction.
I still can't get over how bright those lightning flashes are :O
What is with the rude comments?
Thanks for stopping and checking on those truckers man.
That was good of you man
People might hate us, but they need us
God bless
M Whitelaw why would people hate you?
@@bradschuh4618 because we "slow people down on the highways and we're always in the way"
Bradley Sheakley wow
5:00 homie just cruisin' in his little red corvette lol
Hugs to all of these poor people.
6 years later, still can't believe I survived.
Amber Hoyt AMEN!
I am a severe STORM ⛈ and Tornado lover (used to be so scared of them) and I’ve been to Tulsa, OK 3 times and been under Tornado watches/warnings there and seen funnel clouds. I’m gonna be honest, this would SCARE the shit out of me. I’ve never seen a storm THIS bad. How fucking awful. I feel so fucking bad.
Amber, you were blessed!
Yes it did, tennisguyky. The tornado initially touched down just east of the KS/MO state line, near the end of 32nd Street at S. Central City Road. It then tracked eastward across the city, crossed I-44 and then moved into rural portions of Newton and Lawrence counties.
Skankpronger, we knew the tornado had already passed when we saw the damaged buildings and road signs, then the rolled over rigs. Our concern, at that point, was for the drivers. And yes, rrbond07, we're storm chasers.
Today in 2021, Joplin is mostly rebuilt and thriving!
That tornado only destroyed the physical structures in Joplin, but it strengthened the spirit of the community so much. Working there on the rebuild was potentially the most important thing I’ll do in my life.
@tennisguyky : The worst of the damage had actually already been done before the tornado ever got to I-44. The highway runs along the southern-to-southeast area of Joplin, so very significant damage to Joplin had already been done to the town proper by the time we got to that location.
it makes my heart happy to see people stop to help those who may be injured. Good Job!
Yes, I have experienced quite a few hurricanes, along the coast of North Carolina and in Florida.
Props for getting out with all that insane lighting striking all over frequently
I was thinking about the same thing 😮
That may've been power flashes
It couldn't have been more than three or four minutes from what we could see with the conditions and from what we heard from the truckers.
I remember that day so vividly was watching the weather channel when it took out Joplin Missouri. I live bout 35 miles from Springfield Mo.. Lebanon Mo. Bad weather all around on this day what a tragic thing that happened my hearts and prayers still go back to the ones who lost loved ones
I was following it on Twitter in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I’d been on Twitter for about six months. 🤷♀️🤷♀️
Well, TDANokc, if you had taken a few moments to read my description prior to making your incorrect assumptions, you would have known that the individuals within our group that were qualified emergency responders were the ones that went to check initially. All other individuals, myself included, were ready to assist in any way if needed, which, fortunately, was not the case (one bruised shoulder; one cut on the head, taken to the local hospital). Have a wonderful day.
I just moved from Neosho this last April (2020) and so glad I wasn't there during this tornado, but I got to tell you every time it stormed like this or rained, it made me very, very nervous, especially if it rained hard at night! I was living in a mobile home trailer and there was nowhere safe to go during a tornado, also I was new to the area so didn't really know anybody!
Bless you for stopping to help. It helps restore faith in humanity. Bless you
I get those too, since I live the remainder of the year in the Florida Keys. Difference is, instead of chasing tornadoes, the hurricanes get to chase me! *lol*
God Bless You Guys! I came across a similar site when I chased a tornado in Greensburg, Indiana luckily no serious injury's
Well, I cannot speak for each of them, of course, but it is entirely possible that they had already spoken with them via CB radio and verified that they were okay. One of our vehicles transported one trucker to the remaining hospital in town to be treated for cuts and bruises. Fortunately, nothing serious.

@@youtubeman9064 the fuck does this have to do with xxxentioncord you dumbfuck, over 100 people died in this so please shut the fuck up thank you.
which trucker? the red volvo? he uploaded a video from that day: ua-cam.com/video/TcUkArSFiIc/v-deo.html
It irritates me when I see ppl complain about storm chaser videos and ppl not helping. For one you clicked on the video to watch it. That’s a storm chasers job. Two it’s still dangerous out there via lightning and other things. When they feel safe enough and want to assist they can and most do.
@KingKeyVideo You are correct on your time. I live about .5 miles to the north (at your left) of the overpass at 2:24. the footage of residences prior to 2:24 are homes that were hit when the tornado changed its easterly heading. it literally made a hard turn to the south and jumped I44. I stood upon the overpass in front of you at 2:24 and you could see the tornados swath and how it changed heading to the south. thats a ROADWAY truck on its side with its headlights on at your left at 2:24.
I just wandered thru here and read your comment. Thanks for the description! I’m trying to orient myself to what was happening where and when. ☑️ I hadn’t realized how hard it was raining.
that red volvo flipped on its side uploaded a video from that day: ua-cam.com/video/TcUkArSFiIc/v-deo.html
My friend Steven got killed in the tornado in a semi truck
:( I still honor him to this day.
wow... where it was bad enough to see the semi's I could see at the beginning of the wrecks.. I had NO idea there were all those trucks up ahead. Just incredible.
Thanks for stopping, so many people DONT stop it amazes me. Chase on !!
It's a delicate balance, who knows exactly why some ppl don't stop....after all, if EVERYONE stopped, traffic jams would never clear.
Well, I certainly wouldn't refer to myself as a hero... but it's good to know that somebody recognizes the @ssholes when they see 'em! *lol* Thanks for the comment and the complimen, reichstag7!
Thank you for stopping to help them 🙏💙
And many of us believe the same about the Northeast with the potential for hurricanes potential, higher crime rates, higher cost of living, etc. Us midwesterners love where we live and the sense of community that we have. There is a reason we rebuild everytime.....our neighbors came to our help and we went to them in their time of need. There are things here that transcend humanity and community that most can not imagine.
These guys didn't have a chance this tornado was rain wrapped, they never seen it coming.
This video shows you the importance of emergency flashers in dire road situations, thank you chasers for this incredible footage and for helping the injured!
At 6.30 on this that's me in that celadon semi crossing that bridge above I was 2 blocks away when this hit stuck in traffic
Lol that ain't you
Crazy. All those truck tipped over but I-44 does run right through the middle of tornado alley.
Anyway, I hope the drivers are OK. Whoever owns a wrecker service that recovers semi's is going to be very busy.
Amen!! God Bless you all for not just taking video but trying to help ppl in the aftermath of this Monster!!
no problem my man. i was in the 1995 pampa tx. tornado;nearly died.people just love these awesome, terrror filled and sometimes gory video cuts, yet they are the first to point out that what we may have done is not so smart.well it just goes to show that you can never please the screaming masses.so my friend: just try to please yourself, even if it nearly kills you ...lol
And hugs to all of our first responders who don't get paid nearly what they're worth. THEY'RE the ones who should be making millions.
There was a team helping the driver with a cut head. Any idea who they are? As I recall they were in a black van.
Wow that's a lot of trucks turned over 😳
+Thad Bowling That was a very interesting video. Thanks. Nice of you guys to stop and help out. I was wondering what kind of radios you guys were using? Is that a CB or VHF or UHF FM? I was also curious as to what you think the risk of your vehicle being hit by lightning is? The people will be safe but the van may cease to run which may make the people unsafe. Just curious as to your thoughts.
What scares me now about watching this... is with the recent outbreak in Nebraska and Oklahoma, a big tornado passed through, first-responders were showing up... and so did another tornado. First responders had to take cover.
I give chasers are hard time for not participating in search and rescue. You guys are great examples of chasing, both in informing the public AND the immediate need for search and rescue. You guys are awesome.
Just because you hear sirens @8:54 you don't know if they are responding to the crash that your at or already assigned to the disaster site.. That day just by listening to the emergency traffic all units responding to Joplin/Moore ,Oklahoma were assigned to that area. so they already had their assignments
You don't drive by! You get out and help people.
that's really scary....good that you went to see if people were ok x
Wow! Amazing footage! This happened the DAY AFTER I graduated high school in McPherson, KS (the Reading tornado was the night of graduation; I didn't know it was going on until we were on our way to Salina for a game night). I live about 5 hours from Joplin, and I remember seeing HUGE cumulonimbus clouds up the sky. And that's quite a distance! And the tornado just showed up all of a sudden. All those people barely had time...
O my gosh I just saw my poppys car!. He has passed this is so sad.
Maddie Beverly My sincerest condolences... :-(
This tornado had to be one of the worst ever.
Thad, a lot of respect to you and your team. Chasers are the early warning eyes and ears, thank you!
I was in Sarcoxie when this happened. Little town 20 or so more miles away from Joplin but I got my share of crazy weather
Hey guys, great video. Loved it. Im curious. Were you traveling in a normal SUV, or a tornado fortified crew cab truck for these operations? Did you stay in Joplin to help out days after?? Thanks. Good job.
As for not getting the video, I think it pretty much explains itself. We were traveling into and through Joplin on the day that the tornado hit, and this is what we saw. As for the comments that say I'm stupid, well, every person has the right to his or her opinion, of course, but I personally think that many have rushed to judgement without taking all of the facts into account (or even taking the time to read my description of the footage). No worries. I don't let it bother me.
This is an awesome video, thank you!
I was the first responder that day
Matthew Kratz thank you for helping them. I hope none were seriously injured!
I like how everyone keeps driving by with out helping, I guess they don't want to get wet.
They might be people driving to get to their relatives who were trapped in their houses
Joplin is the most destructive tornado since May 3, 1999 tornado which was a F-5 as well.
Unreal. Thanks for what you do!
Like many others I watch , listen and try to learn from these videos. This is the one that I can't stop thinking about. I guess it's because there's so many residents that sheltered with their phone cameras running. Its obvious to me they had no idea what was coming. They knew bad weather was imminent, some heard the siren but had grown complacent. A few may have thought tornado. There are tornadoes then there's what came to Joplin.
I hope all have or are in the process of healing. God bless you all.
When u say first responder mode i know its close cause im a Red Cross volunteer. Amen to u guys
i live in joplin and the tornado was coming to my house but then it turned and destroyed wallmart and my uncle and my grandma was inside and they got killed by a beam that holds the store lysm grandma and uncle♡♡♡♡♡
I am so very sorry for your loss. That was a terrible storm for sure.
That's very sad, and I hope you and your family are doing better.
Never forget.
I'm sorry for your loss. :( Your grandparents are in a better place now.
Im sorry for that
At the start of the video, the tornado had just come through because it is so dark compared with the end of the video.
I will never forget how much it rained after the tornado and the coming days, it seemed like we couldn't catch a break from it.
I remember watching this show. Wish it was still on. Learned alot.
I like the response of the group to actually show a human being in despair that somebody has a genuine caring heart. I’ve watched a few that are so into their acting for the camera that the one thing that’s obvious to this Retired RN is that the Testosterone pumping through their body has completely shut off their brains! No common sense, drive like maniacs to get the adrenaline rush ... scream and yell at a farm being destroyed, then fly 90 mph down red clay muddy roads sideways, almost taking out innocent lives just trying to get away from a dangerous position! The chasers are usually young 18 to 28 yrs old, and ALWAYS appear to have some competition brewing to see who is the “baddest ass”. Meanwhile, the people who were on the farmhouse are dying. That just pisses me off! Then there is Pecos Hank who stops to remove snakes and turtles etc away from the middle of the roads! Lol❤️
Hey lovin the video hope everyone was okey in those semi's anyhow was the rain warm lol crazy weather...
I always saw depictions of calm after
a tornado passes. But wow, this video proves that sometimes the weather show isn’t over yet.
I am a bit of a weather bug and would love to go chasing one day with a serious team. This coverage of the Joplin aftermath I had not seen before today. God bless all those that went and helped and for all the law enforcement family that put themselves in harms way. Thanks for sharing your footage.
I've got family down around the Lamar area , raytown Sheldon and Nevada love the south ♥️
That's a myth, Skankpronger... Your chances of survival are much better by staying low, like laying on your stomach in a ditch or in a gully. Here's what NOAA says about it:
"Many people mistakenly think that a highway overpass provides safety from a tornado.
In reality, an overpass may be one of the worst places to seek shelter from a tornado.
Seeking shelter under an overpass puts you at greater risk of being killed or seriously
injured by flying debris from the powerful tornadic winds."
ty for helping those guys allways focus on ppl not storms ......
My family survived that tornado.
I enjoyed the radioshow.
poor people that were in the big rigs 😢😢😢
supah, exe I’m sure they’re fine, barring any heart conditions-looks like they basically fell over by RFD,had they been hit directly by this monster those rigs wouldn’t have been recognizable..prob tossed hundreds of yards and crumpled/shredded.
