I'm flying almost perma FA-off and couldn't ever return to flying with flight assist. The way I learned it, was getting in good mission runner ship and doing what I did when I started playing the game: running simple missions. I toggled flight assist off and did _everything_ that way until I got used to it. Took a while, and felt like I was a bloody beginner again, but so absolutely worth it in the end. FA-off flying is a muscle memory thing. At first you will most likely wonder how the hell you could ever fly that way, but that changes with time. Everyone can learn that. It's not hard, just not the intuitive way our brain likes to navigate the world. It will adjust. If you want to try this, and you usually use a landing computer, switch it off. Docking is exactly the thing you will do a lot when mission running, and where you will have a lot of panic and learning effect! :D Also a good time to visit generation ships and the like and take a closer look doing FA-off manoeuvres.
Quick note, for those who are playing with a keyboard and mouse, make sure you enable relative mouse mode when turning off flight assist. Relative mouse emulates how a joystick will center itself if you are not pushing on it. So with it enabled, if you move your mouse up, it will tell your ship to pitch up at 100% speed, and quickly decrease to 0% pitch up. This makes it a lot easier to control your ship in FA off. Without it, you would have to control both where your ship is pointing and what controls you are sending to your ship. The settings are under Controls > Ship Controls > Mouse Controls. There, you can also bind the toggle relative mouse to a keybind, in case you want to switch between the modes.
You can enable shortcut to turn-on "alternative settings". So yes, you can have 2 different setting for FA on and off, but it will require to hit a key or button to switch between them
As far as I know fuel usage is calculated by how much power your modules are using, and as long as a module is powered on it will use X amount of power (fuel per hour) if you are actively using it or not, so FA/off uses same amount of fuel as F/A on. Only way to save fuel is to turn off modules. o7
The 6 hours is for the amount of power you were using, if some modules were powered off it would have lasted longer, but in your situation at the time it was 6 hours.
Love the faoff .. I'm currently trying to add switching between fa-on/off when doing tight turns and boosting. Seems to have more kick and allow for some really tight turns . Helps with aiming the interceptor hearts as well. Nice vid, as always .
I have tried FA Off and never realised the nuanced benefits of it, now I shall give it a closer look... when I approach a station from the rear quarters I keep the station in my upper canopy and by using forward and downward thrust simultaneously until I end up at the mail slot. There are a few things you didn't touch on that I'm interested in, 1) how does it work with interdictions? and 2) is it possible to use whilst in SCO? 5:45 I like the fact that the UI panel didn't obstruct your view of the lower canopy... I was unaware that one can turn off the UI panels. Currently, I'm running an "A" classed Asp Explorer with SCO.
FA off only works in normal flight mode not while in any form of super cruise. Also how you describe approaching mail slots on stations, imagine that but on steroids! that is FA off once you master it lol
@@guidosarducci166 sort of. There are artificial limitations in the game, so it is not completely Newtonian physics, but certainly this mode is closer to Newtonian physics, than with assist turned on.
KB+M player, 4 years in the game. My Z key only toggles between "flight assist on" and "flight assist on." (No, that's not a typo, and it's been this way across 3 different computers and 4 separate installs.) Is there some setting somewhere that I need to change to allow flight assist to turn off?
@@DavidLopez-nc5pq try mapping it to a different key or a mouse button or a joystick and see if it does the same thing. There is another thing you can test and that is in the settings. Make sure that the key doesn’t say momentary or on hold. I’m not looking at the screen, but some keys in the game can be set to only work while you’re pushing them so that’s another thing you can try is what happens if you press and hold Z if that turns the system off, then you know you need to change the setting from from press and hold to just toggle so hope that helps.
5:40 we do have lateral thrusters with fa on
yes

I just started playing horizons on PlayStation but this definitely helps

Can you change it to only apply during fa off? And when fa on is is regular style?
@@mangotapu No, you must manually toggle the setting when you toggle FA on or off. You can't even bind it to the same key.

Yup you are correct... and not moving for 6 hours will burn 89% of your fuel (as I recently discovered by accident :)

How am i supposed to know what's going on without the background chatter? 😂😂😉
Thanks bud, another great vid!

@@Colonel9090 Thanks!
Edit: I tried the procedure as you suggested and "but on steroids" is an understatement... this will take a lot of practice!!
FAO only works at impulse speeds so would not make any differnce in interdiction or sco
I love FA Off. especially with smaller ships like Fighters up to a DBX. They’re great for training to use FA off.
1:56. Well, sort of. It follows Newton's law of physics (an object in motion stays in motion blah blah).

It is far easier to do in a large lumbering ship than a smaller more nimble ship.
Funny I just had this thought last night. It does feel easier
Start big and then go down in size... if you watch my how to make merrits farming fighters video I fly FAO for 30 min in a Python II.
