Exploring St Mary's in the Isles of Scilly - Is this the most beautiful island in the UK?

  • In July my wife and I took the helicopter from Penzance to St. Mary's in the Isles of Scilly for a stunning day trip. I recorded the trip using my DJI Mini 3 Pro and Insta360 cameras. We travelled around the island using electric bikes that we hired on-line before the trip. The bikes were left at the air port for us to pick up and we left them in the same place before the trip back to Penzance. The island is absolutely beautiful and we will definitely be returning at some point in the future. I'd highly recommend the helicopter rather than the plane or ferry.

I used to live on St Martin's but had to leave in 1987 due to no work and no where to live . You have to be quite well off to live there. I moved to Porthcawl in South Wales so I'm still by the sea but it's not as nice as the Scilly isles.

Sorry to read you had to leave, it’s beautiful there. Definitely have to be wealthy to live there and apart from tourism I don’t imagine there is a lot work there. I live in Plymouth and spend most weekends in Cornwall which appears to be much the same as the Scillys. Thanks for your comment 👍🏼

Great video, loved the drone footage, Helicopter looks cool, but a tad more cramped than the old Sikorsky helicopter which we used to fly on.

Great video well done. Just for future reference as the islands sit in a Flight Restriction Zone if flying a drone you will need to contact both St Mary’s ATC and Tresco heliport before flying to get permission from them before every flight. They are really good at letting you fly but they might just tell you wait if they have inbound/outbound aircraft and restrict your altitude to 200ft. Hope that helps. Looks like you had a pretty fun filled day!

Thanks for the information Gareth much appreciated. On the DJI app I think I remember seeing restricted areas where flying wasn’t possible. I did have to request a permission to fly from DJI through the app. The air space is busy and I undertook every flight with extreme caution and my wife was spotting too. Appreciate your comment and advice.

Cool Video, but did you ask every time for flying a drone🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

The first time I tried to fly I was asked for a code to acknowledge that I was aware of the local risks because it is a small island with a very busy air port. I went to the DJI website as directed by the onscreen prompts, ticked a few boxes basically saying I take all responsibility and a code was issued. I then entered the code into the RC as instructed and I could fly everywhere on the island. I only had to do this once.
Thanks for your question. Plase ask if you have others. Thanks, Phil.
