- In this video I test out if i can still operate my vehicle in the event the keys are not found in the vehicle after it has been started. I have a 2018 Honda Ridgeline RTLE.
Make sure you are subscribed to the channel as I greatly appreciate the support. Thank you for watching!

2019 RTL E 19,700 miles. My keyless entry chip went out a month ago. Truck is at Dealership still waiting for part. FYI after you leave the truck all dash lights come back on after about 2 minutes drains the battery over night with no possible start.
Maybe they did this because if you battery goes out on a highway and shuts off there is a danger to the passengers.
^^this
I know that Chrysler cars have a feature with their remote start. If you start the car remotely, and then get into the car (with the fob on you) and it's running, the display will show "Key fob detected. Press start button to enable shift lever."
I’d consider using the remote start before walking into the store. That way you know it’s locked and it will stay on at temp for 10 minutes to keep the truck cool.
Wow, that's really informative. Thank you. In term of security, Key fob is useless after all compare to the actual key. That's really suck.
Wouldn’t you want your wife to lock up the vehicle after parking?
You don’t need a key for that. Just manually lock it before closing door
I need a feature that would keep the car from being carjacked lf i have the fob
The entire point is if the fob dies, or a kid throws it out the window, slides off the roof or hood if you set it there and forgot, is to keep people safe. The lawsuits Honda (or any auto maker) would have if it shutdown on a busy freeway, or as you're crossing train tracks? A stolen vehicle can be replaced. (Most if not all, vehicles with FOB's will start with the fob next to the start/stop button, also a good thing so you're not stranded somewhere.)
Just turn the truck off…..
Read the manual
It’s protecting you from a key fob battery that could die while on a trip. The manual key option in the door should enable the engine start button as well.
I have read that if your fob goes completely dead you can still start the Ridgeline by holding the fob near the Stop/Start button. I would have liked to see this test with the fob completely outside the vehicle. You should have had someone follow you in an other vehicle with the fob for a true test.
I did drive away with the keys in the bushes the first time before driving a few miles. So that was already confirmed. Also the key fob won’t work that far away. At the end of the video I put the fob next to the push button and then it starts. Would not start with the fob in the seat. I believe the test is fair in this regard after seeing that happen at the end. Plus after I took the battery out I left the truck and then came back in and it would not register the key fob. I think what happens near the push button is that it emits a frequency that allows it to pick up the faint signal like your credit card when you touch a touch less system.
I have a 2017.
My service advisor told me that the car could be driven across the country without the key fob.
Just don’t turn the car off if you don’t have it.
I remember hearing some time ago to never leave your fob near your parked vehicle. Apparently there are "signal amplifiers" that can bridge the connection from the fob to the vehicle enabling the vehicle to be unlocked and started. A suggestion prevent this from happening was to keep your fob stored in something like an RIFD blocker sleeve. At any rate, I really appreciate you putting this out there for us to know!
Always wanted to try this lol
Really defeats the purpose.
Thanks, I always thought it would disable the car. It should be optional, maybe in the menu?
Thank you Yuriy, very informative video!
thanks for the video. i also found out the Ridgeline can be driven many miles (aka test drive) without the key fob. good info for when the battery goes out in the key fob. unless i'm missing something, i cannot lock my Ridgeline with the engine running and leave the truck. also if a front seat passenger happens to lock the doors while seated with the engine running then the key fob or outside door button will NOT unlock the doors!
Just a Quick question what if you park the car with it running walk away and it beeps can you shut off the car with the remote start button?
If you manually turned on the vehicle i don’t think you can turn it off. But that’s a good question. I know of you use remote start it will turn off but don’t know if it will over ride after you officially turn the vehicle on. Good question.
You want the car to keep running without the fob. Why? If the fob battery dies, you don't want the car to stop running, leaving you stranded....
I had a client who drove her car (not a ridgeline) without her fob about 30 miles, turned off the car and realized she did not have the key or the fob. Not a good day for her.
I was recently watching a comparison video between the Subaru Outback Wilderness and the Ford Maverick, and when the drivers swapped vehicles the guy in the Maverick accidentally kept the key, and the woman couldn't get it out of park, so this isn't the case with every vehicle.

So when I get out to pump gas at the station, someone could jump in and drive off. Need a switch in the gas door so you cant start it when door is open. Still, could use a KILL switch on the remote too.
Should that small battery fail in the mountains of Pennsylvania and the Ridgeline won’t start we should be able to use the key. You were able to start it but sometimes it will not.
Explains why remote start does fully start the vehicle
I had no idea that it Di
D that. I purchased one last year.
Hey Yuri,
Would have been great to see what would happen if you turned the car off and then back on again while the key fob is not with the Ridgeline (Im sure it would turn off, but probably not back on)
You can leave the car running and lock the doors with the physical key in the drivers door if you are just running into year of both)the store and want to keep the car cool. If you turn the key toward the front the doors lock and toward the rear they unlock. Applies to the Honda Pilot as well (at least the 2018 model
Yuriy. IVE GOT A 2018 AWD AND IVE GOT AEM COLD AIR AND MAGNA FLOW EXHAUST. SINCE IVE INSTALLED IVE NOTICE THAT MY ENGINE RPM AT LOW THROTTLE LIKES TO BOUNCE AROUND UP AND DOWN 500RPM IN LOW SPEED EXCELERATION. HAVE YOU NOTICED YOURS DOING THAT? THANKS
That sounds like you may have an air line hose loose. Check and make sure all your connections are good. Not only on the filter but anywhere else air is being sent. I’m betting this also happens when you are in idle.
THANKS FOR INFO. RIGHT NOW ITS AT HONDA . THEY RAN COMPUTER ON IT AND SEE THE SMALL PROBLEM THEY SAID. HAD A PILOT SAME ISSUES BUT TRANS JERKED IN GEAR CHANGE. BUT MINE DOES NOT DO THAT. THEY ARE GETTING A USED 17 RIDGE IN TOMORROW AND GOING TO RUN IT TO SEE IF IT DOES THE SAME. DONT REMEMBER IF DOING AT IDLE. BUT ILL LET THEM KNOW THURDAY. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR GREAT VIDEOS YOU DO MUCH APPRECIATED
@@YuriyMotso FYI HONDA CALLED ME. THE 2017 DID THE EXACT SAME THING AS MINE. SO THERE IS NOTHING TO BE DONE THEY SAID. YOURS MIGHT DO IT TO IF YOU WATCH YOU TACH. IF YOU GET EXHAUST YOU WILL NOTICE IT MORE.
UPDATE HONDA SAID ALL RIDGELINES AND PILOTS DO THIS THEY TESTED ANOTHER PILOT AND RIDGELINE AND THEY BOTH DID IT. :(
I will have to look into it next time I drive.
I miss real keys... How do you leave your key hidden in the car when you go for a swim/bike/run? If you 'stash' the key in the truck, anyone can simply pull the door handle, unlock the truck, hit the start button, then steal your car...
@@code9142 Exactly, then how do I leave my keys hidden in the car when I surf???
@@code9142 Car won't lock if the keys are in it...
@@code9142 With an actual key, you can sweat on that, or take it in the water. You can't do that with a fob. So you have to leave the fob at the car. When the fob is near the car, it will unlock with the pull of a door handle.
@@code9142 If the fob is anywhere near the car, it unlocks the car...
@@code9142 what manual key??? It's a push button start...
Does it lock itself after it’s left in the parking lot without the key?
🤔
No
On my 2021 Passport it automatically locks when you turn it off and walk away from it with the key fob but you have to set that feature under your vehicle door lock settings.
Yes, the Ridgeline auto locks as you walk away from the vehicle. Unless that’s been disabled in the Infotainment.
Some also require a switch in the glovebox to auto-lock the trunk as well.
My 2020 Ridgeline auto-locks the: doors, trunk, and tailgate when walking away from the vehicle. Honda discontinued the glovebox switch for 2020, and moved that feature into the Infotainment.
Good 👍 test, I had read about the dead fob battery and starting it like you showed, still good info.
Now get some gas ⛽️, you’re running low.🤪
