Not enough early reviewers have mentioned this. Sure they have been mostly extremely biased “reviews” by Canon Ambassadors but its very important information. What worries me isn’t the straight thermal record limit but the recovery times. I’m sure those are optimistic times under ideal conditions. I ordered the R6 this morning mainly because i didn’t want to deal with those heavy files coming from the R5 sensor and all things being equal same processor in both bodies will be more reliable dealing with a 20MP sensor. Just wish the R6 had animal AF and All-i video but by no means are those deal breakers for me.

This virtually makes the camera unusable for anyone attempting to use this camera for primarily video work. For the photographer who casually uses video it might be acceptable, but no serious videographer would chance this camera to overheating. I hate these frickin reviewers who don't mention overheating in their reviews. It appears they may be under an NDA and can't comment on this because they aren't production cameras that they are testing? Whatever the case, consumers need to be aware of this before making a purchasing decision. Thanks for making a video about this Max.

No way would I be able to record an 8 hour event on the R5 in 4K @ 60 fps. The overheating would kill it for me.
Even on my a7Sii, i stick to 4K @ 24 fps or 1080p at @ 60 fps to ensure reliability and that the camera doesn't stop recording in the middle of an event. If the person is just making short films with the camera at 8K resolution or 4K @ 60 fps, then its great to have that feature. Otherwise, Canon should have implemented a fan into the camera like the Lumix S1H.

Max just asking- is it fair to compare the overheating modes in this camera compared to SONY? Sony basically uses IPB compression equivalent for all their SONY A7 and a6 series. This camera from all Ive read and seen has NO PROBLEM overheating in IPB mode. Also, Sony has never put RAW or 10 bit 422 in their cameras as well. I totally get the comparison with Panasonic but for many hybrid users Panasonics reluctance to upgrade their autofocus make them a non starter. For a camera in this price range that has reliable autofocus and can do the shooting modes it can do, I feel like there is no camera like it. Also, I wonder if you are shooting for long periods of time, do you just shoot IPB 10 bit 422 cLog and be happy?

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev  4 роки тому +1

That would be wonderful if IPB was the answer but I'm not sure that it is. I think it's more due to how much data the camera is pulling off of the sensor but I hope I'm wrong. I think this because in 8K the overheating is the same regardless of if you're shooting compressed or RAW, and shooting compressed 4K (you can't do raw in 4K) the camera heats up less if you do 4K 60 then if you do 4K 30 because 4K 60 throws away more data (line skipping or similar) than shooting 4K 30. But I do hope I'm wrong about this. I'm still super stoked for this camera and if it works for what we do I'll definitely be keeping one with that sweet but pricey 28-70 F2 lens :)

R5 and R6 is a photo camera with a video feature. For it to do FF and offer 4k/8k for 20min is a great leap in technology for a sealed body without an active ventilation.
People hike with them for days in a humid environment. It has to be sealed and light. That is a priority, not a never ending 4k FF video capabilities.
If someone is filming videos as a job, they can buy a dedicated video camera. This is what customers expect when they call someone a "pro" and expect amazing quality.
R5/R6 provides a casual short video of high quality for bloggers or to take a video of friends and family. It is not intended for paid wedding video equipment or worse, a studio camera...
Sorry for rant, but R5 in my mind is a 5D mk V - a photo camera not a video camera.
I will totally understand if Canon decided to put a dedicate DSLR for video though. Maybe even with active cooling and all the features for videos at the expense of stills. They already have a decent body and lenses, so it might make sense.

most of people here seem not aware that overheating only holds for CONTINUOUS shots. it will only plague you if you work things where you like to leave camera on the tripod for 20-35 minute shots without any break. in that case you will hit overheating limitations. in that case, best bet is to buy two cameras, and use one while other one cools down.
on the other hand, if you film like most people film - so doing a handful of shorter clips and letting the camera rest for some time in between each - one will be able to record hours without hitting overheating limitations.
at the same time, if you really need long shots without overheating, resolutions all the way to nonsampled 4k 30 are not susceptible to overheating, meaning you can record continuous as long as you want.

In my opinion, Canon blew it with (1) the overheating & recovery from it being this limiting and (2) only allowing CLog use - no CLog 2 or 3. Regular CLog is limited to around 12 stops of dynamic range, so users may be left with (1) having to deal with overheating by choosing RAW to circumvent CLog's limit in DR, or (2) having to sacrifice DR using CLog & compressed formats in order to avoid the overheating. I suppose we'll see once the camera has been properly tested, in particular to see whether the overheating issues are cumulative as well when not shooting continuously, but it could well be the case that this camera is only just borderline useable for video (e.g. for B-roll or stock footage).

This is simple physics(energy). The difference is, canon protects the system with that. the sonys did shut down as well.. but they didnt "fix" that issue. they just got rid of the protection and let the sensor get overheated and let it keep recording. which can damage the sensor slowly over time. canon would never let that happen. thats why they are doing this procedure. sure they could have build in a cooling system like the panasonic has. but then it wouldnt be weather sealed anymore. its always compromises.

The hack is to record over HDMI....and physically pull out the cards. Then you can record for hours. That's the "hack" that Cannot didn't see coming. Hell,...these software programmers can't think of "every" way people can circumvent the R5's overheat limitations. Sadly, some Cannot programmer could get fired for allowing that back door "hole" in their carefully planned firmware restrictions. Dont worry, this hack can be removed in the next firmware release. Just simply make the "heat" condition exist in the firmware and display itself weather a card is inserted or not. Problem solved.

I don’t mind because, Sony had overheating issues to. I mean we got most of the stuff we been asking for . If they included a fan they woulda priced it more. And many of us won’t be able to afford it lol

Looks like it all comes down to your needs. At over 300k problem free actuations on my 5d mkiv, it probably needs to be replaced in the near future and I have a good amount of Canon glass. What I need is a photography work horse, and it looks like this will fit the bill, and it doesn't cost much more than my 5d mkiv did. I have read the R5 is rated for 500k actuations, which is a good improvement for the stills guys (found that stat on the internet someplace... and that never lies, right?). Sad to hear about video restrictions, but that is not my main line of work. Counting the costs, picking up an R5 will be a good investment for my company. Not a Chevy vs Ford or Canon vs Sony type of comment. It just makes good fiscal sense given my line of work. As we all know, be informed and make good decisions for your unique needs.

Who really needs to shoot at 8k though? Unless you’re doing super vfx heavy stuff (not the camera for that anyways) or lots of greenscreen stuff, I don’t see the point. 4k 24p is all I need 95% of the time.
Not that I am that interested in the R5 anyways, the C300mk3 looks way more compelling.

You say we should buy the R6 if we need reliability? But the R6 overheats way quicker than the R5. Also the R5 doesn't overheat at 4Kp30. Only in internal downscaling mode (Fine).

Bottom line, im just worried the R5 will still look like DSLR footage.
There's something about the 1DX footage that looks better/more cinematic than the normal 5D-line , yet I don't think the R5's footage will get close to it (despite having a similar sensor i understand)
