I just made this using tape yarn it turned out so adorable. I purchased some rope wire 1/16th of an inch for the brim but I actually didn’t need it I like the look of it. It’s a birthday gift for my mother‘s 83rd birthday.
That’s excellent, I’d love to know more specifics about this tape yarn, I’m not sure I’m familiar. So sweet of you, sorry I missed your comment. Thanks for sharing 🙏
I used a cotton recycled blend to make mine. Came out slightly smaller but worked so well! Super cute and has some stretch so it fits perfectly. Beautiful pattern and easy to follow 🤗
I'm using the Raffia 100% paper yarn for the first time. It takes so much time to get used to. However, I will complete this hat in a couple of days. I did crochet this hat using milky cotton yarn and it came out fantastic.
Hi Wan! You're an inspiration! I used this tutorial, altered a little in terms of stitches and material and made my very own SUN HAT! Its so cute, I've been wearing it EVERYWHERE! Thanks a ton!
I just bought some yarn and I’m looking forward to making my first summer hat. I have not made any of your projects yet. I just found you on UA-cam. I like your projects and your instruction seem very clear and concise.
WOW 😲.. just WOW 😲 ... This is beautiful. I love ALL of your work. I am currently making another summer top from your collection. I will soon have a hat to match. 🤗 Thank you for sharing your talent.🌺
I was questioning if I had the proper raffia or hook because it looks like her hook is effortlessly moving through the material while I'm over here icing my hands after row 7! LolThank God for these comments! I thought that I was doing something wrong and was about to go out and buy different yarn and possibly a new hook!
Following exactly and bought the yarn from Etsy and the brim does not seem to be stiff enough to go out straight just makes the hat look taller. I’ve checked and counted total stitches for each row. I started the brim at row 36🤷🏼♀️ everything seemed correct
Ohhh you’re gonna kill that vacation wardrobe with this one 😉 I need to stop crocheting long enough to take a vacation to rock it 🤣 Best of luck, I hope you have a good vacation and everyone loves your hat 👒
Hey! I already made some of your shirts and I loved the explanation you gave on how to measure and construct your garmets. Do you have any instructions on how to make a size bigger than 23.5inches/large? 24-24/5 inches? Should I just add an extra row after (Size L only) Round 17 with increase? Thanks so much in advance, I am so excited to start this project.
Hi. It’s a nice pattern. I’m an experienced crocheter but my hat did not turn out perfect either. Once I added the clusters, the end of the brim turned downwards making it look like a lampshade. I am attempting to correct/flatten the brim by laying it down on a table and weighing it down with books. I discovered this trick with a similar hat. I will let you know if it works. Also, I used Ra-Ra Raffia yarn by Wool and the Gang. Bye for now 😊
Update: weighting down the brim worked very well. It’s not totally flat but not bowed down like it was. It looks lovely. Too bad I can’t submit a pic. Off to work on my second one. Thanks for the pattern ❤
Love it❤ Thanks for sharing. Just want to ask you the kind of raffis you have coz the one I have is difficult to stitch. Pls let me know the specific kind of raffis to order, Thanks again.
Hi…just wondering…has anyone had a hard time with the stiffness of the Raffia? My friend and I both ordered the Perfect Yarns Raffia Yarn, and both of us have such a hard time crocheting with it. It does not look as easy and soft to work with, as it does in the video. Thank you ! 😊
Hi Patty, if it makes you feel any better, I have a tough time with it too. It’s just way more rigid than the typical fibers I work with, but it’s worth the hassle in my opinion. You can’t get anywhere near the fit and feel without it. Good luck and take your time with it, give your hands breaks more often than usual
@@KnitcroAddict yes it does make me feel better, because in the video it looks like the stitches are soft and easy. Thank you for the tip, that is how we are approaching the project, a few rows at a time. Thank you for sharing your opinion, looking forward to future projects 😊
It's going to take me awhile to get to round 46 but it will be interesting. Will make a note to follow-up on this! Usually I have to go down one hook size. I wouldn't even attempt a 2.0 hook!
I'm on row 21 and I know I will not have enough raffia to finish this hat. I'm using 3mm hook and the Yarn she used. I'm also a tight crocheter. I might have to frog every round and just skip few rounds cause my 21 rounds are huge
If you want your hat to look like hers buy the exact raffia she is using. After making two of these with a different raffia and not pleased with the results, I bought Perfect Yarns brand and am very pleased. Now it looks like hers.
Thanks Tina, I agree. People always want to try something else but I’ve done the research, nothing works as well as this raffia. I’m sure there’s some other brands that will work, but the only one Im 💯 sure of is this one.

That’s a smart idea, practicing with the cotton first. The raffia is too tough for some peoples hands but so worth it for this hat in my opinion. I adore mine. They’re really durable yet pliable. You can kinda style them how you want and they’ll hold but can still easily be put back to the original shape. If you’re selling them in the summer market, you’re gonna be popular 😊Good luck, let me know how the raffia goes! ❤️

I have seen the most darling straw hats that are made without a crown. Just the brim and a hole in the middle that sits on top of your head. Can you design a crocheted hat like that?
I am doing all that you say - the same yarn and a number hook is 3 mm but I seems to be wrestling with the yarn. The crocheting is not as smooth as I see you doing. Am I doing something wrong? thanks - I just love this pattern. Thank you again.
Could be the batch she is using is more pliable. I purchased the same raffia and find it is very difficult to work with. Not smooth at all. I prefer the raffia made by Wool and the Gang. More expensive but great to work with. I easily made 2 hats with it. Right now, I’m doing a 3rd hat using the one she demos. I feel like I have cuts in my fingers. This is a lovely pattern tho.
You’re welcome Chrystal, I’m sorry you’re having a hard time. You can use any raffia yarn you’re able to match the gauge with, I only recommend using this one because it’s easier to do so with the same yarn. The sizes vary greatly. I know, it’s tough to work with. Could be a different batch, but honestly it probably looks smoother because I have 1000s of hours of crochet experience, so it will of course look a little smoother when I’m crocheting. If everything matches up and the size is right, you’re not doing anything wrong. It’s just not fun to work with lol, but it’s worth it when it’s finished.
I have an update: there is definitely an issue with the white color I purchased. The other 3 colors (chocolate, mustard and yellow) work beautifully and just like the video. I informed the seller. I also abandoned using the white and will instead continue with the chocolate. So it’s not you. It’s the yarn.
WOW 😲 this is beautiful!! I love all your videos, I am currently making another summer top you suggested. The summer hat I made is nothing compared to what you just did... I will be making this summer hat after my summer top. Thank you for sharing your talent. 🌺
I’m wondering if i can make double crochet stitch from row 17 and switch back to single crochet stitch when i hit the brim. Do you think that will work out?
I’m trying to crochet the summer hat, but I’m having trouble the raffia that I bought from hobbii is 100 % raffia paper but is so hard to work . Any suggestions 😢
hi it will be very useful if you write the size detail so we adjust the stich and rows number to our yarn i live in a differnt coutry and we have a different brand of rafia/ tks
Almost done with my hat! How did you block yours? Blocking it is a must to make it look its best! I loved making this hat although it was tiring to my 67 year old hands!!
I actually didn’t need to block mine but I’m not sure what raffia or yarn you used. Mine turned out with a great shape and feel with no blocking. Keep up the great work! The raffia was tough on my hands but so worth! Thanks for much for watching and for the comment! 😊🙏❤️🌺
Hi Jenny, could be a few things, can I ask what material you’re using? You may just be crocheting tighter, did you make a gauge swatch before starting?
I am using the Perfect Yarns bought through the link and a size 3.00 hook . I did not do a gauge swatch as my crochet usually comes out to size with patterns and was not quite sure how to do it with the yarn as so difficult to use (are you supposed to do 18 stitches for 18 straight rows of Sc or in a magic ring ? . If it is too tight shouldI just use a larger hook? I did make a hat in a different grade soft raffia and although easier to work with the hat was too big and I ran out of yarn before finishing it ! Thank you for replying so promptly to my question
@@KnitcroAddict I can only think that Perfect Yarns sent you a softer raffia than what they sent me . I have used one and a half skeins of the raffia. The label looks like yours but definitely not the same outcome and much stiffer.
I am in the process of making this. I am a tight stitch crocheter should I go up a hook size or maybe a half size. I’ve had a couple of yarn breaks using the raffia I ordered from Etsy.
You’ll need to make a gauge swatch to see if you need to make an adjustment, either on hook size or the size you choose to make. If you have your gauge swatch, I can tell you more accurately
I ordered the Perfect Yarns got my 3mm hook out, did the magic ring added the 8 sc, but when it came to closing the magic ring my raffia snapped😢 This happened another 3 times. Whats going on?? Someone please help or I might have to quit😢
@@KnitcroAddict I’ve broken it several times now. I’m trying to be gentle and I’ve tried using a larger hook. I’m thinking it’s defective because it’s also tearing. :(
Hi , I’m about to make this hat but couldn’t get this brand of raffia in Uk , the brand I have recommends a larger hook. Should I stick to the recommended size or use a size 3 as pattern says?
Hi Debbie. I intentionally used a smaller hook to make the stitches tighter, so I would use the same as the pattern. Just be sure to check your gauge first as raffia can vary. If you make the gauge and your stitches are still lose, feel free to go down a hook size also.
Normally I would say absolutely, but for this one I don’t recommend it. You can try something else for sure but I don’t think it will be at all like the pattern intended.
I’m new to raffia. I have a problem not with the instruction tho. You didn’t give either a gauge or a measurement for the finished circle for either size. As a result I 31:03 I have no idea how I’m doing and what size I should continue making. HELP
It’s not impossible but I don’t recommend it. For one, it will be tough to adjust the pattern to the yarn, but it also doesn’t make for the greatest hat. I’ve had a few people try the cotton and really struggled to get the right size. The raffia is water resistant and has the perfect feel and rigidity for a hat.
I'm a knitter but after seeing your short about this hat, I ordered the yarn. Time to learn!
I'm about finished with the bucket using a linen yarn and i loooove how nicely it fits! Cant wait til im finished. Thanks so much for sharing!

Soy de la cdmx, me pueden decir ¿donde consigo ese tipo de radia?
I love it.
Thank you 🥰
I must be grumpy because I've broken the tail 2 times trying to tighten/close the circle.
You must be grumpy AND strong lol. Raffia isn’t easy to break
@@KnitcroAddict I’ve broken it several times now. I’m trying to be gentle and I’ve tried using a larger hook. I’m thinking it’s defective because it’s also tearing. :(
I find it extremely easy to break a single strand of raffia; the crocheted work is very strong but I broke my tail off by accident too 😂
Me too!
I broke my starting tail many times, but what I did was to use fabric glue, it's working!
What is another choice of yarn besides raffia??
Woow amazing ♥️
Thank you 😊
Hi , I’m about to make this hat but couldn’t get this brand of raffia in Uk , the brand I have recommends a larger hook.
Thankyou so much, I’m on round 15.
So far so good apart from my raffia becoming unraveled and tangled 😊
Is all raffia the same size/thickness?
Can we use another yarn? Which one do you suggest? Thanks
HELP
Yipeeee. Finally
Do you think making this with a cotton yarn would work?
It’s not impossible but I don’t recommend it. For one, it will be tough to adjust the pattern to the yarn, but it also doesn’t make for the greatest hat. I’ve had a few people try the cotton and really struggled to get the right size. The raffia is water resistant and has the perfect feel and rigidity for a hat.
