He is actually planning two additional adaptions of War and Peace, some Shakespeare adaptions, and a bunch of other stuff. He has like 3 musicals he's currently actively writing. I'm fairly excited about Moby Dick myself, and especially intrigued by the planned 3rd act song cycle.
His third installment to his “Impossible Novel Trilogy”(which contains War and Peace(just Great Comet) and Moby Dick) will be an adaptation of James Joyce’s Ulysses!
He's like 3/4 done at this point....and honestly I don't think he's really writing it with the intention of a Broadway production (4 act opera epic? Doesn't sound very Broadway to me) Have you heard the song he released from the show (the Comet cast performed it) it's called 'A Squeeze of the Hand' and it's very beautiful. I don't think he's wasting himself on Moby Dick...there are hundreds of adaptions, sure...but are ANY of them well known, considered GOOD? I'm very excited for the show and I love the fact that Dave is simply writing what he wants to write and focusing on his own artistic ambitions.
I completely disagree, mostly because up until watching this video i had no idea that any of the other musical adaptations of moby dick even existed. none of the adaptations you mentioned are widely popular or received any kind of special attention within the theater community, or in general (which is why i dont think it makes sense to compare adapting moby dick to auditioning with "on my own"). its not like he's beating a dead horse thats already been mastered. its not like he's adapting "les mis" again. i also think that dave is such a genius at incorporating his perspective on a piece of preexisting work into his adaptations of them, so i think this adaptation will feel fresher than you might think. he's clearly writing the show with the motivation of genuine inspiration, and that's why i have complete faith in him in this situation.
+Alyson Kumor That's fair I know it will be wonderful because he's writing it, I just don't want him to be relegated to obscurity like all the others, it was already hard enough with NPGC
Sure, there's a lot of adaptations of Moby Dick, but he could bring something new to it and make it interesting. Even though there are tons of versions of it, how many people actually know the full story of Moby Dick besides that it's about a whale? Of course it's been done many times, it's an old story. It doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. It's what he wants to do, I'm sure he has some cool ideas for it.
Well, there you go. He's making it interesting. Seriously though, I can see where that can be bad, but there have been plays that were long and had more than two acts. At least this isn't being done in two parts. I can see where you're coming from though. I am curious to see what other things he does in the future and now I kinda want to see what he'd do with a Frankenstein musical.
Ok but Dave Malloy is definitely NOT like everyone, he's pretty original, like have you seen the kind of music he makes? the lyrics he builds? So it doesn't matter if there are adaptations, I'm sure he'll be able to make something great with that big creativity of his.
I mean, there are so many musicals coming out about angsty teens with mental disorders and formulaic music disguised as fresh and new musicals. Just sayin
i'm sure his version will be unlike any other that exists. after seeing ghost quartet this weekend, malloy's approach to storytelling is pretty novel (pun not intentionally intended).
On his Comet livestream Dave mentioned that he likes to work in trilogies and he has two other War and Peace sections that he wants to adapt (no ETA yet on when that could be).
I just watched the episode of Crazy Ex Girlfriend with the flashback to a college production of a terrible Moby Dick musical... Also: 1. I agree, there's so many awesome classics Dave Malloy could be adapting instead! 2. When you said Heart of Darkness I was like "nooooo" but then I thought about it and the only thing I really hate about that book is the awful rambling writing style--Dave Malloy could probably make it good. 3. I have faith in him. I think Moby Dick will be good.
i may be 5 years late to this video but i just want to say i was lucky enough to see his adaptation of Moby Dick at A.R.T and it was magical and totally worth another adaption of moby dick being made
Good video (as usual), good list of things he could adapt, but dear lord please don't encourage him to adapt crime and punishment I finished annotating it for my lit class two days ago and I can't handle any more of raskolnikov's shit lmao

oh shit really? i love dave malloy so im super excited
His third installment to his “Impossible Novel Trilogy”(which contains War and Peace(just Great Comet) and Moby Dick) will be an adaptation of James Joyce’s Ulysses!
But hey he said he's planning a second and third musical adaptation of War and Peace so you have that to look forward to!
As much as I see your point, I'm still super excited for the musical.
+Logan Lussier i mean yeah basically me too

MadMaxArt I'm not sure if it's related to his Moby Dick project but check out "The Pacific" by Dave Malloy
Too late. He is almost done.

+Adam Fox I'm sure it will be great but it is also going to be a "5 hour, four-act epic"

I think you underestimate his talent
THANK YOU!
He was commissioned to do it by the The Public Theater and Berkeley Repertory Theater soooo
"Lord of the Flies" as a musical would be dope!
Have you heard preludes? Because that one is very original
It's too late though, he's already done most of it, there's no going back
I'm still gonna fall in love with it tho
i'm sure his version will be unlike any other that exists. after seeing ghost quartet this weekend, malloy's approach to storytelling is pretty novel (pun not intentionally intended).
Naw man, he should ABSOLUTELY do Moby Dick the musical
One really quick and easy question: have you read 'Moby-Dick'?
can he adapt the rest of War And Peace?
On his Comet livestream Dave mentioned that he likes to work in trilogies and he has two other War and Peace sections that he wants to adapt (no ETA yet on when that could be).
Thing is he's almost done with writing the music....
Okay but in that example of On My Own, the person singing it is Anne Hathaway
now a dorian grey musical is all i want in life. thanks.
I just watched the episode of Crazy Ex Girlfriend with the flashback to a college production of a terrible Moby Dick musical...

He should adapt Twilight.
+Samuel the Camel Get BANNED son
THIS WOULD BE AMAZING WITH HIS SENSE OF HUMOR I WOULD STAN THIS SO BAD
he did it and it was wonderful but like. ur points are valid
i would LOVE to see him do picture of dorian gray or crime and punishment
Just subscribed! Love the content just keep doing what ya doing 👍🏼
was he writing this at the same time as great comet? I thought he wrote it before
it's too late... but also it looks really cool ://
Ok but Primer and Up Stream Color would be great
You make such good points, but then it's hard to take seriously a man wearing black nail polish.
Good video (as usual), good list of things he could adapt, but dear lord please don't encourage him to adapt crime and punishment I finished annotating it for my lit class two days ago and I can't handle any more of raskolnikov's shit lmao
6:42 please do
haHA my school is doing Tom Sawyer and luckily I am in Little Women instead!
God this was such a bad take
Moby Dick is already a play
Like it was in an actual theater with actual actors not high school show
