Hong Kong in it's early days was such a special place and this film shows it . So so different to mainland China. Nothing so stunning as Hong Kong even today .
I was raised as an American in Hong Kong. I saw this in the 90s in the middle of the night when i was a teenager. It still resonates with me 30 years later as a story of not being able to control who you love despite your best efforts. I was sad to find out that Nancy was old enough to be my grandmother.
I grew up in love with William Holden. He was an international person and I could relate to that. Susie Wong was the most important of his movies to me. Wonderful. I bet he's having a good time in heaven.
Interesting to see the old Hong Kong. Wonder what it looked like 60 years ago. Beautiful Nancy and handsome William with traditional Southern China back drop. Terrific !
Hi Rebecca,me too I am 76 years old and first watched Suzi Wong in 1960 and loved the whole atmospher of HK but not the poverty. It was a dream to become a Police Officer in HK but alas not to be.Nice movie bringing to the public that behind the prosperity of HK many were in desperate need that were hidden in poor districts with being exploited by the many visitors there. Be Blessed.
Hong Kong in 1960 was still very traditional and sixty years ago we can still see a lot of trishaw pullers or riders.Such scenes have long disappeared from Hong Kong and it is very sadly.
miss the good old days....i love this movie and it filmed in good old hong kong,it has changed completely after the years,sign.....William Holden looked very cool in this film❤❤❤
Love this movie starred Nancy Kwan and William Holden. A love story of East meet West in the Orient Pearl Hong Kong. This is a Eastman Kodak Picture and color effects magnificent.
loved this movie fell in love with a Chinese women latter in life after my wife died of 26 years of marriage 1960 love story seen this movie when I was 15 just know some day would find a Chinese women and I did from Northern China Changchun
In 60s, all my teachers wore London Fog raincoat, no matter rain or shine like William Holden. Most likely, they are all gone. I would try to find out if Nancy Kwan was still alive. I saw her and William on Hollywood Road where this film was shot.
Really enjoyed the movie and reading the book now. Only passed through the transit terminal in Hong Kong so never got to experience the city, but the opening of the film is similar to street scenes I’ve experienced in Rangoon, Bangkok, old school parts of Singapore, Hanoi, and parts of Bali, Cambodia and Malaysia, not to mention Stockton Street in San Francisco’s Chinatown and some sections of CA’s Little Saigons. And the Nam Kok bar scenes remind me of overpriced drinks I’ve bought over conversations with bar girls in a number of seedy establishments in various Wanchai-type areas around SE Asia. Hopefully I can check out Hong Kong some day.
It's barely like that anymore. Wanchai is still shady though LOL. Stick to Hanoi & Cambodia. The opening scene on the Star Ferry is still like that though! The cross-harbour ride is the cheapest tourist attraction in HK haha.
I like to walk , as William Holden said . So am I . I walked from Tsim Sha Tsui 's Star Ferry Pier all the way to the Sung Emperor Stone Park near the Old Kai Tak Airport. Blending in with the locals . ❤❤ 👍🏻👍🏻 😎 🇮🇹🇺🇸. That was in the early 90's . Talked to a team of Royal HK Police officers and for directional infos. 🇬🇧 . 🙏🙏.
Nancy Kwan (then only 20 years old) became my first movie-star "crush" when I first saw this movie as a youngster. It's hard to believe that this movie is now 55 years old! And TCM didn't celebrate it's 50th !!!! Shame on you, TCM
She was only 20?? She acts with such grace and elegance - would've placed her as a veteran in her 30s in this picture. Also makes it even more uncomfortable to watch the middle-aged Holden gawk and sketch her on the ferry....
I remember running thru old photos of my grandpa and one such photo showed my gramps wining and dining with William Holden and Cantonese opera singer 新馬仔. I'm gonna guess this was taken around the time this movie was being shot. 😂😂
Love this film. Assumption: A city ruled by the British, the public workers don't speak English. Assumption: all Americans are rich. I enjoy the scenery of 1960s Hong Kong. By the protests these days, seems many are not supporting Hong Kong being in China's hands.
